Optiarc ad 7170 drive noisy

okay, I'm dealing with the stock dvd drive here in my Mac pro. I have put in a LiteOn drive (SOHW 1673) which is much quieter for playing cd/dvd's, etc, as my 2nd drive (it can be done, trust me.) Is there any chance of a firmware update for the top stock drive (optiarc ad 7170) I have tried to use the Terminal, binflash, necflash, etc, but with Leopard it's nearly impossible. Oh, I'd almost pay for an easy way to do this. I put a cd in the upper stock drive, and it's noisy. Down below-almost no noise at all
thanks

It has been my expieriance that Software Update knows and downloads the latest firmware for your specific Optical Drive.
If you want further updates, many times these are done from the Optical Drive Manufactures web site.
Otherwise just use it until you get the Notification from Software Update, or keep checking the manufactures site. No further updates are needed.

  • OPTIARC brand optical drive in new 24" iMac

I just noticed with my new 24" iMac (it's a replacement, first one had a faulty screen) - the optical drive is an "OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5630A" - the first iMac had a Masushita one.
I'm not sure if there's anything I can test it with - but it seems slow and it wouldn't recognise a couple of DVD titles when I initially put them in - I had to reboot, then they appeared.
Some quick searching found that OPTIARC is a Sony/NEC initiative; but that's all I could find about the drive.
Anyone had experience with these drives or had any problems?

    Hi,
I had the problem in an old IMAC G3 just yesterday. After much experimentation I found the answer that is not written in any literature from Apple that I could find. Next to the reset key on the Apple G3 is another button that has no specific literature on and I pressed this key while starting the computer. I came to the firmware that gave me a choice between shutdown and start IMac. I said to myself, "I wonder if there is a command that would reject the DVD. I typed Eject, and it didn't recognize the command, I typed Eject DVD, and it didn't recognize the command, and then I typed, EJECT CD, and the stupid restore disk that didn't would with the system and there was nothing else I could do, came out and I immediately chucked in the garbage.
I did a new install and it works fine!

  • T520 500GB 7200RPM Hard Drive Noisy?

My employer gave me a T520 and the keyboard is the best I have ever used. I also own a Thinkpad Edge and like the Accutype keyboard, but I think T520 keyboard is far better.
I noticed that the T520 in the configuration I want is under $1000 now and am thinking about buying one before it is too late.
I'm thinking about getting the 500 GB 7200 RPM hard drive. I am going to assume it is made by Seagate. Is it noisy? My Thinkpad Edge had a Seagate 250 GB 5400 RPM hard drive that continuously made a shuffling noise, even when not actively being used. It was not the usual clicking noise, but lower in frequency. I'm thinking the head was being parked every time data transfer stopped just in case the drive got dropped. Or perhaps to conserve power. But that's just a guess. Whatever it was it was very irritating. I replaced it with a small SSD and everything is fine now. I also have a Seagate 500 GB 5400 RPM hard drive that I removed from an external USB drive and put into an HP laptop. It did not make the shuffling noise when it was in the external case but makes the same noise now that it is in the laptop. I'm guessing it is a Seagate thing. I used a utility called QuietHDD to adjust the acoustic parameters on both drives, and it worked, but I wonder what that does to performance and reliability. I am reluctant to use QuietHDD on a new laptop.
How noisy is the 500 GB 7200 RPM hard drive in the T520? (My employer's T520 has an SSD). Also is the 5400 RPM version less noisy? And is one more reliable? The difference in price is about $30.

the 500 gigs 7200 rpm hdd noise level is lower then the previous generations used.
The noise of the notebook hdd nowadays are mostly from the reader/writer reader moving around and not so much the spinning platter.

  • MacBook hard drive noisy in Windows XP

Hello, I just installed Windows XP on my new MacBook. I only did this so I could run borlandc for school. Whenever I'm working on it in XP, the hard drive starts to get noisy like when I'm working with videos or doing heavy duty stuff in Mac OS X. The only things open right now are IE and borlandc++.
    What's the problem?

Are you sure it's the hard drive and not the fan?

  • Is the combo drive noisy?

Any MacBook users with the combo drive (not Superdrive) find it's noisy and/or vibrates when inserting and playing CDs/DVDs?
Is this normal? Anybody had their's fixed for this?

Mine is noisy when I insert and take out CDs. It sounds like a bug is being slaughtered in there. The guy at Apple said it's normal to make sounds when inserting and taking out discs.

  • Safari makes hard drive noisy

Is this normal? Every time I launch Safari my hard drive starts to be noisy. It's this usual hard drive clicking but it's really fast and noisy clicking. What's worse that it takes few minutes. It's really annoying in quiet room. It looks like hard drive try to read some data for using Safari. I cleaned everything I can using MainMenu app - cache, history, temporary files. Nothing happened. I use MBP 2,2GHz, 2GB RAM, 120GB HDD - late 2007.
Have you got the same problem or know reason and solution?
    Really thank you

Hi, sorry for late response. Yes, it still does the weird ticking noises. I tried to reinstall operating system and not just Safari and it still does that. I was talking to my colleagues (they're hard drive specialists) and first time they told me that my HDD is going to crash any day soon. Then I told them that the HDD is doing it for several months. They were confused. They told me cause of this noises is that HDD is writing and reading from multiple sectors of the disk.
So, my HDD still does it and I got used to it. What about yours HDD?

  • Hard drive noisy when using Safari

I've read posts about this before.  Sometimes it was blamed on the computer, or the hard drive, but I have experience with this over many years and with different computers, going back to my lime clamshell iMac (which still runs).
I'm currently using a 24" Intel iMac from 2008 and a MacBook Pro from 2012.  And occasionally just for the fun of it I'll fire up the ol' clamshell.
They all do the same thing when running Safari.  At first the noise is minimal, then suddenly is sounds like it's processing lots of data.  And it's non-stop.  The only way to stop it is to quit Safari.
It's not just that it's noisy, but it sounds like it's producing unnecesary wear and tear on the hard drive, lessening its life.
Has anyone ever come up with a solution to this, or should I just switch over to Firefox (which I'm using to post this)?

Thanks for replying, have only just been able to get back on net! I will use the activity viewer although I haven't used it before, so am not sure how to, or to 'post a URL to a page that gives your trouble' but will have a go. What I didn't mention in my post was that my machine had been running very well with QSX/Mail/Safari since I installed it maybe 6 months ago and have had no problems viewing any web sites before. Also I don't think that the sound is the fan if thats what your suggesting, It's more like running your finger over a hair comb every few seconds.

  • HP Envy23 DVD drive noisy and freezes/skips

I have a new HP Envy23 TouchSmart. The DVD drive seems to be having trouble. After just a few minutes of playing a DVD, it freezes, skips and simultaneously, begins to make an awful sound (like it's stuck, grinding on something). I've checked the driver of both the DVD drive and the graphics card to ensure they have the most current versions. I've also installed new video software (Corel WinDVD) and checked the power settings. What's happening and how can I fix this?  Thank you!

Hello Lifeisabanquet.  I understand your DVD drive is making noise.
Have you tried cleaning out the DVD drive with compressed air?  If the drive to be making noise it is likely that there is some form of debris inside the drive.
    Let me know the result!

  • CD disk drive noisy, will not burn CD

On my laptop, MacBook Pro  - - -  While in iTunes I cannot burn CDs if I have been listening to music for any period of time. I can successfully burn a CD only when I initially launch iTunes.
Usually I am listening to music, create playlists and want to burn CDs; when I insert the blank CD it appears to start to burn but after 20 seconds it starts making horrible scratchy noise and aborts the burn.
Is my disk drive going bad, is it fixable, what's going on?   The closest qualified service center is over an hour away......so I'd rather have a general idea of what's going on before I make the trip.

I would try cleaning it with the dry brush type cleaning disks. It always helped when the drive in my previous MBP got cranky.
I'd try repairing disk permissions as well as resetting the PRAM, as this would appear to be a software issue. If the drive refuses to function correctly at all times, only remedy is replacement since they are not serviceable. If out of warranty, may be cheaper to get an external drive instead.

  • Combo drive noisy/CD playback freezes

I've had my ibook for about a year and a half. There are one or two CDs i own that my combo drive has never been able to play-- it makes a lot of noise (whirring, like the lens is shifting around a lot) and i just get the spinning beach ball in iTunes.
Recently, I've started to notice it making such noises while playing back other CDs, and iTunes has eventually frozen w/the spinning ball a couple of times while playing those CDs.
It could just happen to be those discs, but i'm a bit worried as this has started to happen over the past couple of months. Anyone else had similar problems, and as a related question, do CD/DVD lens cleaners do anything? Are they even a good idea with the slot loading drive?
    Thanks.

Ihave recently been having the same problem with Audio CD's only, data discs and DVD's are fine. Not sure why....

  • Dvd driver noisy

  • Optical Drive = Noisy in Sleep

I'm really desperate for some help with this problem.
When I put my computer to sleep, the optical drive spins (like it is loading a CD). Sometimes it does it every five seconds, sometimes every 30 seconds, etc.
I've called AppleCare and they couldn't fix it. We tried several things.
I left it with a Mac-certified technician for over a week. They said they "couldn't replicate the problem" but reconnected some sensor cords and reinstalled my operating system.
    The problem is back.
Anyone had this problem and had it resolved?
And what happens when both AppleCare via phone and Mac-certified techs can't fix it? This is the second MacBook I've had due to problems, and I'm finding this pretty ridiculous.

I am having the EXACT same problem.
Our MacBook was sent in for repair and they "did something". My calls to India and the US were not bvery illuminating.
I put the MacBook to sleep and then sometime during the next few hours it will spin the SuperDrive up for a 1/2 second.
    Looking for answers.
    thanks,
    dave

  • Disc drive noisy and screen frozen

My Mac Mini made a very loud noise while a CD was playing and my screen froze up. I was forced to force quit by pressing the on/off button on the back of the computer. Now it will not complete a reboot. How do I reboot and get the CD out of the computer?

  • New DVD drive issues on DV6000 series.

I just got my replacement drive from hp. I pulled the old drive and got the new one in yesterday. The driver installed on restart and seemed to be fine, i just ripped a couple of cds to itunes. The DVD side is giving me trouble though. I can't change the region code or burn anything.
I get a warning when i try to change the region code: Make sure the drive contains region 1 media and you have adminstration privilege.

Ok, one more time. It's a brand new drive from HP. Got that.
Does it sound like the drive is bad? It will read cd's, my old drive didn't. It does recoginize a movie dvd as a data disc. Is there an updated or replacement driver for this drive on the HP site? Optiarc AD-7581a

    Got that.

  • Mac book pro + external hard drive plus desktop with ethernet router combo

Can anyone advise - for or against / solutions that might be possible as I'm considering time capsule.
    Currently
Desktop = Mac Pro - 230GB hard drive no wireless card.
One ethernet port going to router into which my broadband is piped. Out of the router - ethernet to plug in lap top in other room (hubby not so found of wireless).
Back up = 500GB external formac drive (noisy and vibrates) connected via fire wire. All my photos and music go direct to the formac drive (are not on desktop or laptop).
I do backup of documents from desktop to the external hardrive manually.
I have a mac book pro which I access the internet by the the ethernet (but don't think I can file share because of the router which I think just pipes the internet to both computers).
*What I would like to do*
    1) Access documents from the desktop vire wireless when working on laptop.
    2) Continue to store photos and music without clogging up my desktop hard drive.
    3) Get a quieter external hard drive (been noisy since day 1)
    4) Easy backup of of photos and music (at the moment only one copy exists on hard drive which I am concerned about (other than DVD).
    5) Turn wireless off when not working on laptop - hubby concerned about privacy and I work from home so have confidential material I have to guarentee is secure.
Can any one point me to whether time capsule and or other bits would meet my needs?
    Thanks - Lou

    1) is doable I use that functionality Even from Pennsylvania to Michigan
    2) I use the TC as backup for my primary hard drive although I always use two back up hard drives for my primary. I use the Finder not Time Machine.
    3) The LaCie d2 or the quadra work fine with TC. They are quiet and sleep appropriately.
    4) is doable and related to your one.
    5) secure your router and wireless setup is not a problem.
You can also use the setup of the external to interact with ATV. Like streaming movies to ATV
