Optiarc  DVD RW AD-5630A problem

I have a problem with my iMac. It reads dvds just fine but it doesn't read any cds. I've tried to use different brands of blank cds and also I tried to put in several audio cds, it doesn't read them. There's a sound like it is starting reading it, then it repeats several times and the the disk just ejects. Everything was working fine before.
Any suggestions?

I too am having trouble playing DVDs burned with my Optiarc drive. Sorry I don't have the solution, but I can add a data point to the story about problems with DVDs burned with Optiarc.
My current hardware: mid-2007 24" iMac, built-in Optiarc DVD RW AD-5630A with firmware 1AHM / MMC-3.
My scenario: after making home movies with iMovie '08 and iDVD '08, I either burn to DVD (TDK 16x DVD-R 4.7 GB) straight from iDVD or I save as disc image from iDVD and then burn the disc image from Toast 9. In either scenario, I can play the DVD on my iMac or any other Mac or Windows computer. However, it will not play on my Xbox (original Xbox, not the 360) because it freezes when trying to mount (sometimes the Xbox will not recognize the disc as a DVD, and sometimes it will begin mounting the disc and then freeze before displaying the title menu).
Before I bought my new iMac, I had the same workflow on an older 2003 17" G4 iMac that has a Sony DVD burner, and those discs play fine on all DVD players including my Xbox. To test the hypothesis that something happened to my Xbox around the time that I upgraded to my mid-2007 24" iMac, I burned several DVDs using my older iMac, and they continue to mount and play fine on the Xbox. On both my older and newer iMac, I have Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installed, same version of Toast 9, and I burn at the slowest speed (2x) on both. So it seems that the problem can be isolated to the Optiarc DVD burner, but I'm not sure if there are other factors at play here.
I searched the Optiarc site (www.sonynec-optiarc.com) but could not find a firmware update for the AD-5630A. However, I did find this site via Google:
Liggy's and Dee's modified NEC and Optiarc firmwares
http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/en/Optiarc-AD-5630A/
Because I was not sure about the site's reputation or validity of the firmware, I have not tried it yet.

You don't specify any problem, but try a cleaner CD, then different media.

  • OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5630A

I can't burn more than x2 with my iMac 24" 2,8Ghz and Toast 8.0.3 (OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5630A)
The read is very slow too.
If anyone can help me. Thanks.

There's a possibility this is a drive firmware issue in concert with the specific discs you are using. Insert a blank disc and choose Disc Info from Toast's Recorder menu. In the window that appears there is a link to a Web site where users report their experience with specific media. You may find that the discs you have aren't highly regarded.
Optical drives burn slowly at the start (near the disc's center) and speed up as they move toward the outer edge. However, if the drive is having difficulty with the media it continues to burn slowly to reduce the number of errors.
I recommend getting some Verbatim discs to test. Most drives have their firmware tweaked to work well with Verbatim media. I'm not familiar with Optiarc as a company but if they have a Web site maybe there is info there about specific brands of discs that their drives are tested to support.

  • Optiarc DVD RW AD-7561S problem with my tx2513cl

just last night, my disk drive started having problems, being jumpy and making erratic noises while playing a DVD.  Im currently in iraq, so most dvds i play are copies or whatever. i use VLC media player when i watch any videos, due to its low use of resources. the dvd started skipping and my drive was making noises, so i stopped the dvd. i opened it up in windows media player to let it run on there, and ran into the same problem. i quit trying, and today i restarted my computer, started playing it, and had the same problem. im not sure what happened, but everything quit playing the dvd, and the drive itself wasnt recognizing that there was a dvd in there. its not detecting any drives. i restarted, same problem, then uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers. same thing. any ideas? please help as i dont want to have to send in my laptop, i use it to call home everyday and it would be a huge setback for me. thank you!

    Hello, good question,
This is from a document HP has on using Recovery and Backup manager ( creating disks )
"The discs must be either CD-R, DVD-R, or DVD+R. Do not use CD-R/W or DVD-R/W read/write type discs because the creation process will fail. "

  • Replacing e a broken OPTIARC  DVD RW AD-5630A drive in my iMac 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo? Is it worth it or should I just get an external one?

Any suggestions are most definitely welcome! Do you think it would be worth it or would I be better off going with an external? Thanks!

If your optical drive doesn't work, take your computer to an Apple Store and they'll change it for another optical drive. That's the safest way because you can't modify the iMac (except the keyboard, mouse and RAM)

  • I was having problems burning DVDs' fro iDVD and it turned out my burner is at fault I have a 27 inch iMac using a OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H. Where can I buy a replacement in UK?

I was having problems burning DVDs' from iDVD and it turned out my burner is at fault.
I have a 27 inch iMac using a OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5680H. Where can I buy a replacement in UK? I have seen these with SATA is this the correct cable for my mac?
I have also tried the Mac superdrive but my imac wont recognise it as it's been configured for macbook air and mini mac. I know I can "make" it work by doing something or other in com.apple/plist, but dont want to mess about in there.
I'm also told an external drive would work but does "mac compatible" mean only for air and mini as their own superdrive is or all macs?
Any help appreciated before I convince myself mac is no better than windows pc!

Thanks but this didn't really help.
I can buy the drives at a dozen places but none of them seem to know what connection is correct (SATA etc) and that includes the apple store. It was the store who told me buy the superdrive and all my problems would be over. Wrong! It isn't recognised by imac as it's confifured for air and mini mac. Only way to make it work is as i said in earlier post. (Would you be happy buying a car you were told would start and then discover you have to open the bottome and fiddle to make it go?)
The apple store I would not even consider taking it to. Days without the pc, over priced and don't have a good reputation for actually fixing things!
    But thanks

  • Optiarc DVD RW AD-7561S stopped working, we need Firmware update !

    Hello!
My dvd RW drive (Optiarc DVD RW AD-7561S ) is not working properly when reading and writing to dvds(still working good with normal cds), i have tried lot of solutions and by the way i have been impressed by the number of people who had problems with AD-7561S that stopped working.
I still use the same OS (Vista 32bit) and have HP notebook 6730S , i tried the upper filter trick by Microsoft but it doesn't worked so i think the problem is only with this drive, i think the only way to proceed is to update the firmware, i didn't find the appropriaté firmware in the Sony-Optiarc website, they told to me by email that the OEM firmware version must be downloaded from the pc fabricant so i searched in the hp support, there's some optiarc's firmware but not exactly the AD-7561S.
My only hope to make this drive working is to update the firmware, my only request to HP is to give us the firmware version that will solve our problem or tell us the suitable firmware of another drive  to use from the Optiarc website that will work with (i mean to use the AD-7560S for example for my AD-7561S but we need someone who know if it's equivalent and will not damage the drive) , thank you !
I hope you will reply to my(our) request !

  • Optiarc DVD AD-7170A drives will not burn DVD's

My 2007 MacPro has (2) Optiarc DVD AD-7170A drives, and neither will burn a DVD. They each have Firmware Revision: 1.N8
I was able to find 2007 feeds regarding this problem - that I did not see get solved. Has anyone found a solution?
    Many thanks,

Solution: No, not really...  but you can easily replace the drives with )correct) new ones.

  • Lenovo IdeaPad N580 - Windows 7 - Optiarc DVD RW AD-7740H

I recently formatted my IdeaPad N580 laptop, it came with Windows 8 installed and i downgraded to Windows 7, the Optiarc DVD RW device stopped working, more specifically it "works" but the drivers are messed up (my assumption), it flashes the light, opens/close the tray and even makes noise as if it were trying to read the CD/DVD but all/any CD/DVD i tried with does not execute nor even appears as if there were nothing, the device itself does not appear in the system, no icons.
The drivers (Windows 7 Default drivers) do not work and the manufacturer does not provide a driver download for that model in their site.
Any kind of help will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

  • Optical drive burns disks with loud hiss OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670S:

My iMac 24-inch 2.66 ghz is burning some disks that either have a very loud hiss or they have corrupted areas. The drive is a OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670S. Has anyone else had this problem?

I also face the same problem, running on 10.6.1. Somebody suggested to upgrade the firmware of this drive to 2AHH. But where to get this firmware upgrader? From Apple directly?

  • OPTIARC DVD RW AD-7170A issues with reading DL DVDs

    Hi,
I just wanted to let you know, that after unsuccsesful lens cleanings I did the fw flash.
I have a MacPro3.1 on 10.5.8 OSX. I used the http://liggydee.cdfreaks.com/page/en/Optiarc-AD-7170A/ 102cbt_rpc1.bin bin file for flashing the drive. And flashed it with the http://binflash.cdfreaks.com/ Binflash utility within the terminal.
    Here are the results:
    BEFORE FLASH
    OPTIARC DVD RW AD-7170A:
      Firmware Revision:    1.NC
      Interconnect:    ATAPI
Burn Support:    Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
      Cache:    2048 KB
      Reads DVD:    Yes
      CD-Write:    -R, -RW
      DVD-Write:    -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
      Write Strategies:    CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
      Media:
      Type:    DVD+R DL
      ID:    MKM 003
      Blank:    No
      Erasable:    No
      Overwritable:    No
      Appendable:    Yes
      Write Speeds:    2.4x, 4x, 6x, 8x
    AFTER FLASH
    Optiarc DVD RW AD-7170A:
      Firmware Revision:    1.02
      Interconnect:    ATAPI
Burn Support:    Yes (Generic Drive Support)
      Profile Path:    None
      Cache:    2048 KB
      Reads DVD:    Yes
      CD-Write:    -R, -RW
      DVD-Write:    -R, -R DL, -RAM, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
      Write Strategies:    CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
      Media:
      Type:    DVD+R DL
      ID:    MKM 003
      Blank:    No
      Erasable:    No
      Overwritable:    No
      Appendable:    No
Now everything works! Shame on the Apple, that users have to solve Apple's problems on their own...

I've been trying with the above mentioned tools to no avail. I keep getting a 'command not found' reply in terminal. I've double clicked on the Binflash utility and it listed the commands in terminal

Failure with one type of optical media and not another -- even from the same manufacturer -- is not unusual. DVDs and DVD-RWs use different dies that respond to different lasers in the optical drive. There are numerous other possibllities here.
It would not be unusual if the write laser for DVDs has burned out but the DVD-RW is still working becasue they use entirely separate lasers of a different intensity and frequency.
It may be the dyes used in a particular lot of Verbatim DVDs are not quite compatible with the DVD lasers in your drive (that is independent of DVD-RWs because they use different lasers.
Because of manufacturing variations your drive may burn other brands of DVD blanks flwlessly, but just won't work with Verbatim DVD blanks.
The DVD Read/Write lasers in your drive may simply be dirty.
Changing/updating the firmware in an optical can be done, but there is a definite risk of converting the optical drive into something useful only as a paper weight.
Try another brand of DVD blank or even a different model Verbatim. (I have seen cases where discs from a different manufacturing lot from the same vendor worked when another failed.)
If you are using DVD-R blanks try a DVD+R (there again different lasers are involved.
It is tricky to clean slot loading optical drives, but sometimes simply blowing them out with short bursts of canned air will work. Be sure the computer has been powered down for a good while and the optical drive is completely cooled. Then use only short bursts of air to prevent super cooled liquid air from getting into the drive. That can easily crack the lenses if you aren't careful.
If your Mac mini is less than a year old or you have Apple Care, get an appointment and take it to the Genius Desk of the nearest Apple store. If you aren't covered under warranty a bus powered external optical drive very probably costs less than the labor charge to diagnose the issue with your drive.
