Optical/Analog Splitter for Dual Audio Output

Does anyone know if the mini-TOSlink combo jack can simultaneously output both digital and analog signals? If so, has anyone seen a splitter that would let you take advantage of this? I need both output formats to feed into my multi-zone stereo receiver.

I am currently trying to find a solution to what is I think the same problem (receiver only routes analog signals to the additional zones). I haven't been able to find such a cable and have considered these to connect to my multi-zone receiver:
1) I have an old sound usb soundblaster extigy. I have used it in the past as a cheap d/a convertor of sorts as it has both digital input and outputs and works without being hooked up to a computer. If I feed it the airtunes digital signal it outputs simultaneously optical and analog to the receiver. The problem is that the soundblaster does add processing to the signal (volume control and mixing of its other inputs) so although it does sound clean, it almost defeats the purpose of the digital connection. This adds another unit and may not be ideal for you as you would have to buy such a card. Separate D/A convertors would also work but would add even more cost
2) I have considered taking my airtunes apart and tapping into the audio output and adding a second analog output. My warranty is already up but I am afraid the case of the airtunes cannot be opened without it breaking. This option does not fix the same audio distribution problem when I hook up my laptop.
I thought the integrated digital outputs on my macs and airtunes were ingenious till I ran into this problem with my new receiver. Too bad the receiver doesn't have a couple more D/As to route digital signals. With the number in there already for 7.1 channel audio I feel this shouldn't be a problem at least when listening to stereo digital signals.
Sorry for the long post, I will keep looking for a better solution, please post if you do as well!

  • Nano lacks dual audio output?

When I plug in my Nano into the Alpine iPod adapter of my car audio deck unit, I have to unplug the headphones to get the Alpine to receive an audio signal.
I'm pretty sure that the regular iPods were able to receive an audio signal through the dock connector with the headphones plugged in.
Is this the way the Nano is supposed to work?
This is annoying because I've found that the easiest way to wear out the connectors of the headphones and the connectors of the iPod is to plug in then and unplug the headphones on a regular basis.
Can this be corrected in software? Perhaps a dual audio output can be activated with the next firmware release? If not, it should be possible to direct the audio output to the dock connector instead of the headphone output when the dock connector is active. This can be done as an optional setting in the menu since I would assume that not everyone would prefer this setting all of the time.

Did you get your Nano to play? I have a 420i adapter for my Alpine HU. Plugged in the Nano, the unit recognized it. The Alpine splash displayed on the Nano but, no sound.... Had a mini before and everything worked fine.

  • Dual audio output

Many people are obviously considering using a Mini as a media server, but there is one big problem with that which I'd love to be able to solve.
How can you send quality application audio to the AV amp (via TOSlink probably) BUT, keep system sounds on the Mac itself, or better to a small local pair of PC speakers (contained in the monitor perhaps)?
There's nothing worse than some good quality high volume audio being interrupted by deafening beeps and other system alerts. So how best to arrange 2 audio outputs that can be differentiated in the System Prefs so System sounds go out one port and other sounds (e.g. iTunes etc) out the other? Are USB and/or Firewire adapters the only solution?

Soundflower looks interesting, but I don't think it'll do what I want.
The only way seems to me to be adding a USB audio device. The Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Micro Sound Card provides basic functionality on a Mac (which is all I need) and uses the same combined analog/optical connector as the Mini itself. So that looks like a good solution.
I still wish the Mini provided separate control of the analog and digital/optical outputs. No reason why it couldn't list them as separate output devices in OSX. Then make a plug that separated the 2 signals. I think that would be very useful. In fact, why doesn't it list the external output separately from the internal speakers in any case? It's a shame they cripple its potential.

  • X-Fi Elite Pro: Which mode for best audio output?

I need your help in determining the best audio output (level and clarity). Up until now, I use the Entertainment mode (6bit/44.KHz) and the Audio Creation mode (in 96KHz, not sure at what bit depth this modes works though...). I need to find the best mode and in-mode settings to achieve maximum audio output level (in terms of dynamic range and dB level)as well as optimal sound clarity. For the latter, I believe that the sound should be unadulterated, so additional enhancements such as EAX, Crystalizer, CMSS etc should not be used...
    Any help will be appreciated

    Hello Hyperion,
I can try to answer this.
My experience (and you know that listening to audio and the quality is objectionable), I listen through "Gaming Mode". This seems to be the best "playback sound quality" at least for my ears.
Additionally, I really don't care for digital output, its not my preference so I have the MAUDIO E66's connected through analog. Simple but seems to be effecti've in terms of listening and not tiring to the ears.
"the sound should be unadulterated, so additional enhancements such as EAX, Crystalizer, CMSS etc should not be used"... I absolutley agree, to an extent. I setup my elite pro with the basic very "vanilla", but in the end, I do use the Crystalizer (set to "2"). I don't beli've in eqalization or very little, but the reality is unless you have a perfectly designed room acoustically, you will probobly benefit from some form of oversampling such as I stated. I would like others to chime in and share what operating systems they use. For best playback quality, I have found 2008 Server serves me well. But, motherboard, cpu, memory of course plays out as major hardware for consideration.
Anyway, I'm getting a bit off topic here - would really like to hear from Creative on this. What do they use in testing (mode, software, motherboard, cpu, memory).

  • Dual audio output, Headset + PC

Not sure if this has been asked.
At work, we recently started using Lync for our conference call, my question is can Lync be set to instead of using A or B audio device to use A and B?

Hey Chris, the only way I could see this working is if the built in audio device supported dual input/output (the one on my laptop does), however would require an analogue headset rather than usb.
What are you trying to acheive? Maybe there is another way to achieve a similar outcome.

  • Anyone using M-Audio FireWire Solo for iChat audio output?

Audio output for iChat works perfectly through my G5 internal speaker but does not work through my FireWire Solo. It yields 100% digital distortion everytime the person on the other end speaks. Everything else in my setup works beautifully with my M-Audio device (Logic, Pro Tools, Reason, iTunes and all other applications).

You have landed in iSight Discussions. You may find better help in the Expanding your Power Mac G5 Discussions or iChat AV 3 Discussions area.
I do not use M-Audio or any of the other things you post about except iChat AV, and iChat AV does NOT work through my DP G5's internal speaker.
I offer the following possibilities for your consideration if you cannot find better help:
    (0) When using iSight or iChat AV, you may be experiencing Possible hardware or software conflicts. This link gives tips for investigating that possibility.
    (1) You may be trying to use M-Audio FireWire Solo for other than its intended purpose. The web site states, in part: The FireWire Solo is designed from the ground up as an easy-to-use, high-quality interface for songwriters to record guitars, vocals and more on the computer.Perhaps your M-Audio's documentation or the "Support" information linked on the web site can help you determine whether your device is compatible with iChat AV and your other AV equipment.

  • Please help, need to use stems for final audio output

Hi, hoping somebody can help. Finished a editing a feature due tomorrow and the sound designer gave me a final stereo mix that's a half hour too short. But he also gave me the "stems" and said I could adjust them as if I knew anything about audio.
Here's the question, I have DX, FX, MX, ME and VO files. Don't know which are redundant. Can output myself if I know which ones to use. Please, if you know, share?
    Thanks!

Wow, if he knew anything about audio he would have given you the proper mix.
Try just putting each of those in separate tracks.
Make sure the line up by playing the master and listening for an echo. Then just start turning off the tracks until you get what you need. It certainly looks like some will have some internal redundancy. I don't understand all his terminology, but it's apparent that he has mixes that split out the voice tracks so you can drop in foreign language voices later. So the ME and VO sets will duplicate what's found in some of the others.

  • Dual Audio Outs? / HDMI and RCA Analog at the same time?

I am trying to figure out if the Apple TV supports dual audio output. My Onkyo receiver supports dual-room/dual-source audio (powered and line-level stereo audio output for 2nd room). The problem is it can only accept an analog source for the second room.
I know that HDMI takes precedence over component video connections if both are connected.
Will the ATV send audio signal out of the HDMI and RCA Analog jacks at the same time so I can enjoy streaming music is two rooms simultaneously?

I like to be a helpful soul, so I decided to pull the owner's manual from Onkyo and take a look at the receiver, without ever thinking about the model number, and come to find out, I have my Apple TV hooked into an Onkyo TX-SR606.
    I appreciate that!

Problem is, I have the HDMI into the Onkyo and the analog outs going to to another stereo receiver for the outdoor speakers. Both work at the same time, which means that the Apple TV will output both digital and analog at the same time.
    Good to know.
    Iowabeerguy wrote:
Now, let's look at the receiver - if you have the HDMI plugged into the - say DVD input, and it's playing through the main system, and you plug the analog outputs into the DVD analog in on the receiver, the Zone 2 out will automatically look at the HDMI input, and not put out anything to the Zone 2 outs, because it won't pass digital to the Zone 2 outs.
    Oh yeah, that makes sense!
    Iowabeerguy wrote:
I can't try it tonight, but I think if you plug the analog outputs from the Apple TV to an input that isn't assigned to an HDMI in, (like CD) and then set the Zone 2 amp to play that source, it should work.
I've set aside some "tinkering" time this weekend to try that. I'll let you know if it works; I think it will. Thanks again!

  • No variable audio output for Cisco CHS 435HDC set top box.

Background:  Until the other day I had my stb connectected to a TV, using TV sound, with an HDMI cable.  The P265v2 remote volume control changed the TV volume.  No problems.
My new TV & home theater system was recently installed.  We don't use the TV speakers.  While my first preference was to program the Verizon remote to change the volume on my Onkyo receiver, this did not appear to be an option on the remote's programming instruction page on the Verizon website.  Instead, I am directed to change a setting on the remote that makes the Verizon remote change the stb output volume vs the tv volume.  I changed the setting on the remote and ensured the stb box was set up for "variabe" audio output.
Problem:  Using the stb variable audio settings, volume settings 1 through 30 produce the same volume.  (Volume setting 0 produces no volume, as one would hope.)  It appears the "variable" setting isn't producing a variable output as it should be on this unit.
Thinking that maybe the receiver was complicating the sitation, I tried connecting the stb to the old TV and the new TV directly and had the same results.
Now, while I am watching TV, I need to have the receiver remote at hand in addition to the Verizon remote.  It would be nice to have the volume be adjustable as it should be while using the Verizon remote.  I don't like the idea of using a seperate universal remote because then I would lose some of the functionality that the Verizon remote provides when watching TV, using the DVR, watching on demand, etc.
I would like to know if this is a problem just with my unit, or if it exists with all of these units, which would hopefully be fixed with a Cisco/Verizon firmware update soon, hopefully.
    Thank you.

Having same issues with hdmi and optical. Any fix to this.
    Hello,
In order to control the volume on your home theater system, you'll need a FiOS TV Universal Remote that has the 4-buttons on the top for 'DVD', 'Aux'iliary, 'TV' and 'STB'.  The audio receiver would have to be programmed into the FIOS TV Remote, and controlled using the 'Aux'iliary button.
Verizon's 4-Button Universal Remote Controls are available for purchase:
    a) online via www.verizon.com/fiosaccessories
    OR
    b) at a local FiOS TV store (call first to check if they have them in stock).  For a list of stores:  http://www22.verizon.com/support/residential/tv/fiostv/general+support/account+issues/questionsone/8...
Presently, the default remotes for new set top boxes are the 2-button P-265 (newer version) remotes.
Regarding a problem with HDMI/optical on Cisco 435 STBs, check out the following:
    Go to this webpage:  http://www22.verizon.com/Support/Residential/TV/FiOSTV/Receivers/Equipment+Issues/QuestionsOne/12839...
Click on the link for 'Cisco CHS 435 HD DVR User Guide'.
Open the PDF and go to page 22 for 'Connecting to a Home Theater System...'.
    Hope this helps!

  • KN9 Platinum - is audio output via both SPDIF ports possible??

I am looking at this board because it has both an optical and coaxial SPDIF output - can you tell me whether these can be plugged into and used simultaneously for HD Audio output. ie I want to be able to output a single digital audio stream from an application like PowerDVD via both connections.
Note this is not about multi streams from different applications - just a single stream via both SPDIF ports.
For an HTPC setup I want to be able to take the optical SPDIF output to a surround sound receiver and the coaxial SPDIF output into an HDMI enabled graphics card which includes audio input so I can then take both video/audio to another monitor.
    Thanks for your help.
    Ben

Yes, audio will do this video won't.

  • How to play ultrasonic to audio output

I'm monitoring an ultrasonic transducer operating in the 150Khz range and want to phase shift the sound to audio that can be played over the PC speaker output channel. The signal is very much like white noise with ocasional spikes that are very short in duration, around 100 microseconds.
I'm sampling the input at 500k samples / second so I need a way to not only shift the noise to the audio range but also not miss the spikes when resampled down to the ~40k samples / second for the audio output.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks,
    t

First, Thanks to all for the quick replies.
I'm monitoring the signal in near real-time, so playback at a slower speed isn't an option.
What frequency should the audio (output) sine wave be? What should the duration of the output spike be? Does the timing of the start of the output spike need to preserve the phase relationship to the input sine?
In the past, this has been done in HW and just output to a small 3 inch speaker so the preservation of the original signal isn't critical but being able to hear the pops is the desired result. I'm trying to get more information about the analog circuit that accomplished this.
The transducer itself is tuned for a frequency response around 155KHz. The source is very low power and already amplified 60db before getting captured on the NI device. The ambient nominal noise level is tuned in HW to be around 5 milivolts.
I've got a lot of latitude on the ouput. The duration of the spike needs to be sufficiently long just be audible and there is no sine to be concerned about phase. I'm processnig the signal at 10Hz.
I have taken a couple swipes at this problem. The first hurdle is that the signal is so low that once you amplify it to be audible, it's difficult to hear the spikes from the white noise. A spke may be as low 15 milivolts. The second is that when resampling for the audio, the spike can be skipped over completely.
My current approach is to first multiply the ultrasonic signal with a low frequency sine wave and then use a bandpass filter to try to filter out a harmonic. This seems to help improve the signal to noise ratio. The second step is to inspect every sample and dynamically amplify and widen each based on the level in order to make the spikes more pronounce. Finally, I resample the signal to meet the audio parameters and continuously play the result through the system speakers.
I'm not an EE so please excuse if my attempt to explain is less than optimal
    Thanks,
    t
