Optical Audio in Vista 32-bit : Different/Wrong behaviour in iMac & MacBook

Hi,
I've installed Boot Camp a long time ago, but couldn't subscribe to these Apple forums for an unknown reason... well I've finally managed to.
About my questions, I've searched on the web but couldn't find a precise answer, or it was just not exactly my problem that I would find. So here are the problems :
*iMac (Late 2006)* : I cannot get sound from my Logitech Z5500 that are plugged via a TOSlink adapter, the optical way. It's just not working at all, while it's working flawlessly in OS X Leopard. The only workaround I have is to remove the adapter from the audio plug, so my iMac produces its sound from its own speakers... They're good, but you know, I don't wanna do that.
*MacBook (Late 2008)* : The optical audio plug is constantly red, meaning that the system forces the sound to be optical, while I don't have anything plugged it. Keep in mind that it works flawlessly, once again, in OS X Leopard. I heard about "the toothpick, the q-tip and the match" trick in the plug, but you see, I tried it, and it's seriously not the problem, because it wouldn't work in OS X. I also noted that by plugging my Z5500 speakers with their adapter in my MacBook, no sound would come out of the speakers. Strange or normal?
So basically, both of my computer have different problems related to optical audio, and I can't get them to produce any sound.
Can anyone shed some light on this? (not red please...)
Thanks in advance!
- Dave

Arg, I didn't really mean to post this in "Installation & Storage"...
Oh well, I believe we could say I didn't succeed in installing the sound devices properly :-\

    Hello All...
Back after a brief absence, things look a little bit different.
I'm trying to take a 16 minute mini dv video and compress it for use on the web. I'm interested in any suggestions you may have on settings for the video and audio tracks. I've tried using Sorenson 3 (15 frames, key frames set to automatic, 320 x 240) for video and IMA 4:1 (mono) for audio. The resulting video looked great but the file size came in at about 255 Mb.
    Thanks!

Thank you for the replies.  Everyone was correct about the jack, interface, and phasing problems.  I have been unplugging my motu audio interface and then using headphones at work.  I have not changed any detailed audio output settings in logic.  When I read that the jack might be a problem I tried switching headphones.  This actually helped.  I am using dre-beats headphones and they seem to be having issues with the mac/jack-(the phasing/panning problems.  I can use these headphones with other devices but not the mac.  I have to use ipod ear buds and the phasing seems fixed.  Hopefully this information is helpful to someone else.
If anyone knows how to correct this issue please let me know its difficult to know what my final mixes are going to sound like and I have had to keep bouncing everything into i-tunes- sync to ipod and then listen in my car radio.

  • X-Fi Audio - Subwoofer NOT working in Vista 32-bit Ultimate!

<X-Fi Audio - Subwoofer NOT working in Vista 32-bit Ultimate!I I have WIndows Vista 32-bit Ultimate and Sound Blaster X-Fi Audio installed and with the factory drivers (I tried another set earlier and they did not work, so I reinstalled the original drivers which worked, at least partially). Until now I only listened to music using my headphones, but I tried today to plug-in my 5. Genius system (50W RMS) and everything works fine EXCEPT the subwoofer does not produce any sound at all!! The ONLY way to make it work is go to Control Panel -> Sound -> Speakers -> press Configure and then click the Test button in the dialog that appears (or click the subwoofer icon to make it produce a very nice bass sound - which I absolutely love, but it's the only way to make my subwoofer work!!!). Please guys, help me find out what the problem is. All help is much appreciated. Thank you!

Thank you my friend,I have done as you have mentioned (made sure the DLL did not stay there when I rebooted before I installed your version), and now I have the version which you have built. However, I am still unable to hear the subwoofer I am so sad... even my default on-board card supports the 5. just great, and I love the sound of that, but I was hoping for something better from Creative - instead, all I got was a soundcard I can only use with my headphones at the moment because of a faulty driver...
    Did you enable Bass Redirection?
Run Console Launcher, click on Speakers and Headphone -> choose 5. Speakers.
Then click on Bass (Bass Management) and enable Bass Redirection.

  • Browse sequence in Windows Vista 64-bit?

This is a duplicate post.  I posted it nestled down in another browse sequence thread and didn't get any nibbles, so I am creating a new thread.  I hope no one minds.
Hi all, I'm wondering if I can get a little help from the gurus here.  I've been through the forums and internet trying to find the answer to browse sequences and glossary tabs in Windows Vista 64-bit.  I am running Windows Vista 64-bit Home Premium Service Pack 2.
I need to mention that my .chm files work fine on Windows XP (multiple machines tested).  My project consists of a master .chm (thanks Peter Grainge for the step-by-step, which I followed to the letter) with 15 slave projects.
I've copied the hhactivex.dll from the Program Files\Adobe\RoboHelp\RoboHTML (426 KB) on my Windows XP machine and saved it in the following folders on my Windows Vista 64-bit machine:
    c:\windows\system32
    c:\windows\sysWOW64
I then tried using the cmd.exe command prompt (as administrator) in c:\windows\system32 to do the following:
    regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\hhactivex.dll
    regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\hhctrl.ocx
Both commands registered successfully.  When I opened the .chm, the glossary and browse sequence are still not working properly.
So, I then tried unregistered hhactivex.dll and hhctrl.ocx in the c:\windows\system32 folder using the regsvc32 and the cmd.exe (as administrator) in that same folder.
I then tried using the cmd.exe command prompt (as administrator) in c:\windows\sysWOW64 to do the following:
    regsvr32 c:\windows\sysWOW64\hhactivex.dll
    regsvr32 c:\windows\sysWOW64\hhctrl.ocx
Both commands registered successfully.  When I opened the .chm, the glossary and browse sequence are still not working properly.
I've been pulling my hair out on this one.  I've seen posts mentioning the "Unblock" Button on the .chm's Properties - General tab - Advanced dialog, but I do not have an Unblock button anywhere in the properties for these .chms.  I also do not have the Microsoft KB 89xxxxx security updates on my Vista 64-bit computer that I can find.
I also say a post that put the path/filename in quotes when using regsvr32.  I tried registering again using the same scenarios above in system32 (regsvr32 "c:\windows\system32\hhactivex.dll") and sysWOW64 (regsvr32 "c:\windows\sysWOW64\hhactivex.dll") but still I cannot get the browse sequences/glossary to work in thses compiled .chms -- whether opening the master or the slave.
After I registered the hhactivex.dll on a Windows XP test machine, if I opened a .chm and then went into Windows Explorer and tried to delete the hhactivex.dll, I'd get a "file in use" error.  However, when I open a .chm on my Vista 64-bit machine and try to delete the hhactivex.dll in either system32 or sysWoW64, it deletes without error.  I verified this with all of the different registering methods I described in this post (registering, testing, unregistering, moving to next folder, etc.).  Being able to delete the .dll on the Vista machine tends to make me believe that the .dll isn't really registering,  Either way, it isn't being accessed when a .chm file is opened like on a Windows XP machine.
I've been around the internet trying to find out exactly how to register .dlls in Vista 64-bit, and unless I'm totally missing something I believe I am doing this correctly.  If I am doing something wrong, could someone guide me in the right direction with a complete step-by-step method that works in Vista 64-bit?
I have yet to test Vista 32-bit or any version of Windows 7, but I am hoping that once I resolve the problem in Vista 64-bit that the rest will be non-issues.  I hope anyway, as I have no means to test those platforms.
Thanks in advance for making it to the end of this long post of mine.  I appreciate any help!
    eeddings

The 32bit version of HH.exe is kept in "C:\Windows\SysWOW64". When you double click a CHM file on a 64 bit machine, it launches the 64 bit version of hh.exe kept in C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32 directory.
To launch a CHM with 32 bit version hh.exe, run the following command in a 64 bit machine C:\Windows\SysWOW64\hh.exe <CHM file Path>
The other good news is that you can get the 64 bit version of HHActiveX.dll in RoboHelp 9.0. It is kept at "<RoboHelp 9.0 install folder>\Redist\x64\HHActiveX.dll"
If RoboHelp 9.0 is installed on your machine, this activeX control is already registered. Otherwise you need to register this DLL.
To register 64bit version of HHActiveX.dll,
1> Run Command prompt(cmd.exe) as administrator
    2> Type "regsvr32 <64 bit HHActiveX.dll full path>" and press Enter.
3> This should show that the registration is done successfully.
Now working with 64 bit version of HH.exe should also show Glossary and Browse Sequences.

  • Labview with Vista 64 bit native support

I'm waiting day after day to see a new Labview release supporting Vista 64 bit (I mean running at 64bit natively and not in a 32bit emulation layer). I expected it last year... then I waited believing that of course... it'll come soon... but now I'm really panicking.
64bit CPUs and Vista x64 are now available from a long time ! What's going on ?
Did I miss some release note ??? Maybe is already available and I don't know ? (I hope so!)
In the mean time Microsoft announced the discontinuation of Windows XP on June 2008 this year (3 moths from now)!!!
Does anyone knows when a full 64bit Labview version will be released ? And what about Vision libs ? (I also need full 64 bit Vision Libs for my applications...)
I have big memory allocation limits due to 32bit addressing (max 2GB)  that I cannot afford anymore... not in the 2008.
I write Vision acquisition software using Labview, IMAQ Hardware and Advanced IMAQ Vision Libs.
As everybody know, memory allocation is "generally" limited to 2GB by the 32bits OS (little more with some tricks) but max image allocation in Labview is anyway much smaller because of default memory fragmentation (Labview and Vision LIBs require allocating a "contiguous memory block" and generally no more then 3-500MB are really available for a single image even with 4GB of memory installed in your PC! This is caused by all DLLs and processes running in memory at different addresses and fragmenting the memory).
I spoke several time with NI concering this problem in the last years and I was told to wait... in the mean time I had to write a special "memory defragmentation" tool myself in order to free up to 1.2GB of RAM for imaging with Labview. Not enough for me and anyway not a clean solution.
Then after Microsoft announced Vista 64bit (a few years ago now) and all PC manufacturer starting building 64bit architecture I expected to solve all my problems soon because of the much larger usable memory addressability...
but this cannot be done yet if Labview and Vision LIBs run in 32bit emulation only !!!
Furthermore Vista 32bit is much slower then XP and uses much more memory !!! This is really a nightmare as I believe that for the first time I'm facing the possibility that soon I'll have to deliver a "newer" but worst product to my customers.
In fact I'll be forced soon to move from LV 7/8 to LV 8.5 (just in order to support Vista) but only to be slower and having the same memory limitations (or maybe more).
    Maybe I'm wrong ?
Can anyone reassure me... LV 9 is just after the corner with full 64bit as requested ??? I'm really in panick !
    Thanks...
I'm really a LV lover but cannot wait anymore...

    Dear Matt,
I was aware of the /3GB and I tryed time ago with LV 7 and XP but without being able to allocate a larger image anyway...
I'll try again and for sure 4GB under Vista 64 is better then anything !!! Do you know if "Image Create.vi" (a VI included in the Vision package) is also able to allocate up to 4GB ?
Concerning Memory defrag I started using some tools available in the marlet (there are good ones for memory analyzing but no one is capable of defragging the memory really)... then a coupple of years ago I wrote a small application in Labview based on 2 free tools provided on the web (those are free tools for developpers provided from Microsoft)...
One is Listdlls.exe which is a command line capable of listing all running DLLs (associated with any running application) and it produces a memory map of the DLLs allocation in memory which allow you to understand how memory is fragmented.
The other one is also a command line tool named Rebase.exe which allow you to a DLL to a different address in memory.
In fact once rebased a DLL will generally load automatically starting at the new address instead of loading in the middle of the memory or at the original address... but not always as some rare system DLLs will anyway try to load always at the same position (as for Asian Language Pack on Chinese/Japanese OS). Furthermore some DLLs need to be loaded to a specific address.
I wrote a program in order to automatically create a memory map of all running DLLs (including system ones) using Listdlls.exe and automatically rebasing them after the first 128MB in memory. Rebasing system/running DLLs is generally more difficult (because of the required access policy and because you must plan a replacement only after next reboot) ... my software take care of this.
Furthermore rebasing running/system DLLs is also dangerous and can crash your system... after many test I limited the rebasing to the memory addresses included between 256MB and 1.6GB... I never have problems rebasing all DLLs in these range (including system ones) under XP 32bit SP2.
I also move DLLs to free space only (not on already occupyed space). Furthermore I never allocate DLLs in the first 128MB (as you'll crash your system probably). In this way I was capable of freing a lot of memory (generally about 15-20 DLLs are reallocated and memory between is free between 300 and 1.6)... something more can be done manually on the higher memory addresses but it take times and must be checked always. In automatic mode my software is capable of freing memory in 2 seconds (but you need a reboot).
Backing up original DLLs is also suggested in order to be able to restore them in case of any problem. I implemented an automatic backup and a restore option for this. A manual mode allow me to manually move DLLs in memory (but it's more dangerous and never allow my customer to do it).
Generally after rebased the memory stay defragmented until you install a new OS patch (which replace old DLLs).
Then you must be aware then in order to mantain the memory clean when running your application in Labview you should preallocate a large memory block when starting your application preventing labview from allocating resources in your free memory (it must use memory outside the 300-1600MB range). This is another problem... I found it hard to solve and my application is doing a good job but not perfect for this.
p.s. Labview and LV Runtimes are major cause of memory fragmentation as they load just in the middle of the system memory... these are the first DLLs ro be rebased !!!

  • Windows Vista 32 bit

Windows Vista 32 bitx Hey guys and gals,
This problem maybe on the wrong thread but I'm stuck between a rock and.......well you know!
I just got a new computer with Vista 32 bit OS and 3 gig af Ram and 2 core quad. I've put in a sound card.....emu 22m and loaded up the appropriate driver.......v2. driver with it's applications. I am using the virtual console patchnmix DSP to try and link together my ins and outs(yamaha AW446 with 8 channel ADAT connection to my computer and Sonar 7 as my music software program)(by the way, the light at the end of my optic cable is working well). The configuration of my AW446 in copasetic(has not changed for years)(worked with my last 2 computers) and the configuration of my Patchmix DSP looks as though it is fine and dandy. The ASIO outs work fine. The problem is that I'm getting absolutely no signal on my PCI card ADAT /2,3/4,5/6,7/8 As I'm looking at the Patchmix virtual console while I sing into a hot mic!!!!
Can anyone give me some trouble-shooting ideas? Or even better.....give me some answers!!!!!
I'm at my wits end here!!!
    Desperate and confused,

    Hi,
Do you mean Windows boots straight into Safe Mode?  If this is the case, try the following.
Let the notebook start in Safe Mode.  Then hold down the Windows key and press R.  Into the Run Box type msconfig and hit enter.  In the System Configuration window, click the Boot tab and look to see if there is a tick in the box next to Safe boot - if there is, click the box to remove the tick and then click Apply to save the change.  Restart the notebook and see if it will boot normally.

  • Optic audio in/out

I just read the specs on the MacBook upgrade and noticed the audio in/out ports support optical as well as analog. And then I looked back on a Web site that tracks such things and noticed that my original MacBook has the same optical support. Is that right? I know I'll need one of those TOSLink cables that's square-ish TOSLink connect on one end and min-phono plug connector on the other, but I already have one of those from an old recording MiniDisc player.
You're kidding me. I have optical audio in/out???????

Yeah. Wow. I've used these things for so long for such basic purposes, I just kind of open the box and go. But wow. I had to rearrange the position of the receiver on the dresser, which meant moving all kinds of things, because that cable of mine is kind of short -- it was packed in with a portable MD recorder, so they didn't expect you'd need to run the connection very far. But it sounds great.
For the purpose of 2-channel stereo, in most cases I can't really tell much if any difference between analog RCA composite audio and optical. Downstairs my Apple TV is connected via RCA composite analog audio to my Onkyo receiver because all the opticals were already taken; and I can't tell the difference playing music from the Apple TV on analog compared to, say, the PS3 connected optically to the Onkyo. But the small Yamaha receiver in my bedroom corner office, different matter. It's a pretty good receiver; it cost quite a bit for a small, compact unit. But listening on the Onkyo downstairs, even on analog connections, and then coming up to the Yamaha connected via analog splitter from the audio-out/headphone jack on my MacBook, sounded muddy in comparison. The optical off the MacBook to the Yamaha, quite a bit more clarity, now almost like the Onkyo on any connection type.
Thanks for the confirmation. I should read the little electronic book next time. Had this thing a year and just found out.

  • Vista/Win7 Bit-Matched Playback over SPDIF (and Crystalizer)

I have an SB XFi XtremeMusic and use it for my Microsoft Media Center all the way from XP MCE, Vista and now Windows 7 Ultimate (which by the way is robust, pretty mature with most (not all) issues sorted).
. I want to achei've automatic bitperfect output over SPDIF, the 'Bit-Matched Playback' in Audio Creation Mode option is there in both Vista + Win7. IE When playing music 44.k, TV/Videos 48K without using ASIO or WASAPI as Media Center does not support. However the 'Bit-Matched Playback' option appears to do nothing to the output other than disable the Crystalizer option (which doesn't work anyway over SPDIF), it always remains on the default format selected on the audio endpoint properties. Why is the option presented if it doesn't work? I understand in great detail the big differences in the XP/Vista+Win7 audio architecture and know dynamic sample rate switching worked on XP with some cards.
    2. Also on a completely different tact why do none of the enhancements (mainly Crystalizer) not work on SPDIF if default Windows audio endpoint? (I know this is completely contrary to point above/audiophiles).
Really if neither of the above two points can work or be addressed then having an expensi've XFi card for SPDIF output is pointless as give no benefit over onboard SPDIF.
    Cheers,
    Simon

Problem It's the 2.2.0002 drivers. The 2.5.0002 ones are better, but Creative never released an installer for Audigy series.... Problem 2Windows Vista 64bit doesn't support SPDIF pass through. There's a chance it might work with the "dell driver trick" but the driver release notes clearly state it's not supported. Problem 3It's the 2.2.0002 drivers. The 2.5.0002 ones are no better. CMSS 3D effect only at the moment.Hope this helps

Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I understand you are having issues using your Blu-Ray Player on your HP Pavilion Elite e9140f running Windows Vista. I am going to approach this from a couple different directions.
First, we are going to try to put back the original drivers that came with your computer using the HP Support document: Performing a Software Application or Driver Recovery (Windows Vista), which will walk you though using the HP Recovery Manager to restore the original drivers on your computer.
Second, if you are still not able to use the Blu-Ray Player we are going to try using the HP Support document: Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows Vista), which we will use to roll your system back to a point in time where your Blu-Ray player worked. This will not affect your personal files, but it will affect any applications you have installed between now and the date you choose and any settings you have changed during the same time.  These will have to be re-installed and/or re-changed.
Lastly, if you are still not able to install the software or are still not able to use your Blu-Ray Player I am going to suggest you back up any personal files, bookmarks and such to a USB drive or something and then follow the HP Support document: Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows Vista), which will walk you through recoverying your computer back to factory settings.
***NOTE: Be warned you will loose everything so ensure you backup what you want to keep!
If none of the above work and your still having issues it appears to be a physical issue and I think it would be best if you contacted HP technical support for repair options.

  • HT202730 Macbook Pro Optical Audio Output Toggles On/Off

My Macbook Pro optical audio output seems to switch off with a loud click when sound is not playing for a few seconds.
Then, when sound resumes, there's a delay as it switches back on.
Is there a way to stop this toggling?
And please don't tell me to check the connections.
I've already tried different sample sizes and bit rates to no avail. It seems as if the system is switching something when there is no audio being played, then switching it on again. Even if the playback is only on pause.

  • Optical Audio In Windows 7

    Hi everyone,
I've been reading through the threads, and I realize that Windows 7 is supported (unofficially) by Bootcamp. But I was wondering, has anyone been able to get optical audio out working in Windows 7? I have an iMac that is from early 2008, and when I installed Windows 7, I couldn't get optical audio to work. I even tried installing third party realtek drivers from the realtek website, to no avail.
Has anyone been able to figure this out or get it working?
    Thanks in advance!

you are not alone on this. just read this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2037093&start=0&tstart=0 .
I had the same problem until I used the solution posted by TheSponge - so thanks to him/her and all others involved I got sound in windows now. The fix is as follows:
    1. Create a folder on the root of your c:\ drive, call it "CirrusDriverFix".
    2. Install 7-Zip in your Vista or W7.
    3. Put the Mac OSX Install DVD that came bundled with your Mid 2009 MBP in your DVD drive then right click on the BootCamp\Drivers\Cirrus\CirrusAudioVistaxx.exe (xx=32 for 32 bit and 64 for 64-bit) file and choose "7-Zip > Extract Files..." Enter c:\CirrusDriverFix to extract the files.
    4. Once the files have been extracted go to the c:\CirrusDriverFix folder and delete the original cs420x.inf file and replace it with the one attached to http://att.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=182216&d=1247310061 make sure the you rename it to cs420x.inf
    5. Go into your device manager, right click on the Cirrus Logic under "Sound, video and game controllers" then choose Uninstall and make sure to check the box "Delete the driver software for this device."
    6. Click on Start > type "cmd" then right click on the cmd.exe that shows up and click "Run as administrator".
    7. type in CD "\CirrusDriverFix"
    8. type in dpinst /F and then go through the install, it should "force" the install.
    9. Enjoy your sound.
hope this works for u as well. What annoys me the most is that in their advert they state that mac runs windows natively, when in real life u can't get any sound with either XP or vista.

  • After rebooting my Windows Vista 64 bit system, could not access iTunes; after uninstalling I tried reinstalling, but it has been running for more than 24 hrs. Should I cancel installation?

I had been updating my Windows Vista 64 bit system and as a result of a problem, had to reboot my system. Afterwards, I was no longer able to access iTunes.  I got a message stating that there was a problem with some of the files associated with the application.  A phone rep at Apple's Customer Service provided me with emails linking instructions on completely uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes. I did the uninstall, then checked for lingering iTunes files and couldn't completely remove some, but tried intalling the latest version of iTunes. It has been running for roughly 24 hours.  The status bar is green all the way across, and when I try to cancel, I get the following message: "Are you sure you want to cancel iTunes installation?"  I keep hitting "no," but am staring to wonder if there is a problem with the install.  Should it take this long if I have roughly 134 gigs of music?  I can still see the music in my computer's C drive, so I am worried that there is an error, perhpas because I didn't clear out all the lingering C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\ and all the lingering C:\Program Files\iTunes\.  Any thoughts?

It is not just the HP. I have 3 HP computes and 2 Dell computers. 2 of the HP and 1 Dell suffer the iTunes internet block. Took me a while to figure it out also. But, the one thing that is different on the Dell, is that I can leave iTunes installed and not open it and everything works. As soon as I open it, internet access goes down. BUT secure sites (https:) works fine.

  • Can I install iTunes in separate user accounts on Windows Vista 64-bit?

    Hi,
My wife and I use different user accounts on Windows Vista 64-bit. Before I go and mess things up on my computer, I wanted ask some questions:
    1) Has anyone has successfully installed iTunes to multiple user account?
    2) If so, has anyone successfully shared the same music root directory for 2 different iTune instances.
I'm thinking with iTunes very tight integration with the music files (for indexing/searching, etc), that it would be bad to have add/change/delete on the same music root from 2 independent installations.
    Experience OR opinions welcome!

) Has anyone has successfully installed iTunes to multiple user account?
You don't install the iTunes application more than once. Each user account in Windows will have its own iTunes library.
If so, has anyone successfully shared the same music root directory for 2 different iTune instances.
Many people have done so. This should help:
iTunes: How to share music between different accounts on a single computer
Note that iTunes has no folder-watching capability, so if you add a track in one user account, the other user will have to add that new item manually, either by using the Add To Library command or dragging the item into the iTunes window. There are a couple of potential solutions from other developers, though:
