Optical cable connection

i have a samsung led, samsung home theater system and an HD cable box.....
to get surround sound from tv is it better to connect optical cable from  tv to receiver or from cable box to receiver?  or is there a way to get surround sound using hdmi.  i do have the cable box connected to tv via hdmi and also the home theater system.

Going optical out of the TV gives you the option of using either surround or TV speakers. Sometimes at night you don't need/want full range sound.
HDMI will give a better quality of sound in some instances, but increases the cost and complexity of the setup.

  • How do I get good audio feed from DVD player to my MBP using an optic cable

I have successfully recorded audio off of concert DVD's using Sound Studio 3 by connecting my DVD player to my MBP using left/right outputs to a 35mm input. I purchased an optical cable, connected it to my DVD player and used a 35mm adapter to connnect it to my MBP input. All I get is a weird popping interferance type sound instead of clear audio. Any tips on what is going on? I have correct settings in system preferences (recognizes an optical connection) but all I hear is noise?
    Thanks for any help!

I just use mac the ripper with the following instructions

It gives you a few options for audio, I generally save as AAC though you can rip as AIFF and then encode into just about anything with quicktime.

  • MBP with IPod HiFi and Optical Cable Problem??

Hey guys, I just picked up a Hifi and was hoping to use it with my macbook pro. When I hook up a normal 3.5mm jack into the hifi's input it works, but when I use an optical cable it does not. Using the volume keys on my mbp bring up the normal Volume icon on-screen but there is a small circle with a line through it just below. Also, in the system preferences, under Sound and Output it says "The selected device has no output controls"
Any ideas? Can it work with optical cables? I can always use a traditional 3.5mm jack but would prefer the optical

It works in my case, I am now playing a song on my Itunes from my computer's optical out (G5 Tower) to iPod HiFi via a digital optical cable
Connect external speakers, headphones, or optical digital audio equipment. The headphone / line output jack accommodates optical digital audio output, analog audio output with a 24-bit, 44.1-192 kHz D/A converter, digital audio output up to 24-bit stereo and 44.1-192 kHz sampling rate and supporting encoded digital audio output (AC3 and DTS). For analog headphone / line output a standard audio cable with 3.5mm metal plug should be used. For digital audio, a standard toslink cable with a toslink mini-plug adapter can be used.
Open System Reference, sound, then output, in the box of choose a device for sound output , do you see the digital out, optical digital-out port?
Make sure out the output volume, the mute box is unchecked.
Regarding, the volume key on the computer is disable when your are using the optical output

  • Connecting apple tv to a receiver via optical cable

I connected my apple TV via a digital optical cable to the yamaha receiver RX-V477,but I have not figure out how to hear the music that is coming from the apple tv. Can you help me with the set-up in the yamaha receiver. Thanks

    Hey mgrossi,
The Apple TV's optical digital-audio port, also known as as TOSLINK, carries both audio and video signal when used with the proper cable. See this article for reference -

  • Connecting Z-5500 to MacBook with Optical Cable?

How's it going, first post here just need one question answered. I just got Logitech's Z-5500 for Christmas, and everything is set-up working great with just using the headphone jack. All speakers are working when in Stereo (x2) mode, but I would like to connect the system to my Macbook using the an optical cable since you get a cleaner, better quality of sound.
I don't know anything about optical cables or how to connect it to my Macbook. I know the optical side of the cord goes in the back of the control panel for the Z-5500's but where does the other side go into the Macbook? Do I just need one cable? Any detailed help with links will help. Thanks a lot.

    Picked this up.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
HDMI is required to connect the Apple TV to a TV or through a receiver. The optical connection is for audio only.

My apple TV is connected to a DTV with an HDMI cable and to my Yamaha receiver via optic cable. We rented a movie on Apple TV and.found that the movie played, but we only got audio for music tracks. Voice tracks were silent using both TV and receiver.  This only occurred on the rented video and on recorded shows on my cable DVR. previews and other content on Apple TV are fine. Any ideas??

Previews and trailers do not contain 5.1 audio.
If you have recently moved your setup, you may have inadvertently changed some of the settings on your receiver. It certainly sounds as though it is unable to play the 5.1 audio from the Apple TV.

  • No audio with HDMI cable connect - need optical cable?

I have just connected my AppleTV 2 with my Pioneer ELITE 910 HD Plasma TV system.  I have a hard wire ether net connected.  I have a great picture coming out of the HDMI connection from AppleTV plugged into my ELITE 910 HDMI Media Receiver.  But I am not hearing audio.  I have gone through the 'settings' menu on the AppleTV screen and have every setting correct (I believe)   It might appear that I may have to purchase an Optical Digital Audio Cable that would input into my Pioneer ELITE VSX-54TX receiver (that does have an Optical Digital Input that has not been used.)
Am I on the right track?  I was hoping the video AND audio would travel through the HDMI connection.   I don't want to spend money on the cable if I don't need it.

Re: No audio with HDMI cable connect - need optical cable?
Yes, audio and video should go via HDMI.
Do other peripherals work ok with the pioneer over HDMI.
My LG BlueRay player works fine.  My TIVO works fine -- good audio and video
AppleTV is a bit odd with audio at times.
Does the pioneer media box handle doilby digital and linear PCM?
I don't know what "linear PCM" is.  All the specs on this 2004 system are here:
    http://plasmatvbuyingguide.com/plasmatv/pioneer-pro910hd.html
If you have Dolby Digital set to Auto I'd expect you to get some audio - if set to On and media box can't decode DD then you may get no sound.
Try cycling those settings as well as the one for audoo bit depth.
Have done all this.  Still no audio

  • Multi-wire optical cable for 150...200 meter connection

Please suggest multi-wire cable to connect switches located ~150...200 meters away from each other.
It is needed to have at least 8...10 wires inside such type of optical cable.

Cisco doesn't sell optical cabling. Typically people have optical cable installed by a cabling vendor from rack to rack and terminated in patch panels.
The recommended specification these days for most intra-building applications is OM 3 or ideally OM4 50 micron multimode cable. You tell the vendor how many pairs you require and they take care of it for you.
You only then need to procure the 1-2m fiber optic jumpers between the patch panel and the SFPs in your equipment. Again these would be OM3 or 4 50 micron multimode and generally you need LC terminations on both ends. They are commodity items and available from any number of online retailers.

  • Is Optical cable necessary if you have HDMI?

Just got the new Apple TV. If the HDMI is supplying both Audio and Video, is it really necessary to also hook up the Optical? Thanks in advance.

it entirely depends on your individual setup.
if you are connecting the appletv to an amp via HDMI then no, you don't need to use optical.
if you are connecting appletv direct to your TV via HDMI and you want DD5.1 audio, you would then connect the optical cable to your DD5.1 speakers/amp.

When you're connecting 2 digital devices via a digital audio cable you need to make sure they are running off the same clock, otherwise you will suffer from something called jitter. Jitter can manifest itself in a number of ways depending on its severity. Because both the devices you are using have good stable clocks you're not hearing it most of the time. But when their clocks do slip out of sync with each other a number of bits are getting read at the wrong value, which causes a click in your audio.
What you need to do is make both devices use the same clock. Since the 003 is the interface Logic uses I would suggest you use this as the master. You need to set the 8pre's clock source as ADAT. I've posted a screenshot below from our 2408 config. I don't know how similar they are but I hope it helps.
I would also make sure you always turn the 003 on first as many devices will automatically revert to their internal clock if they can't read one from the source you've set. I'd double-check the clock source the first couple of times you turn everything on.
    Good luck with it.
And yes fer, of course the 003 transmits clock. Any digital audio connector transmits clock inherently. Receiving devices uses a phase locked loop to sync to it. I cannot believe your original response to this post went on about drivers. If a post about 2 digitally connected devices causing clicks does not scream jitter at you then you don't know half as much as you think you do. Please stop posting advice on things you know nothing about.

  • DVD optical cable to iPod HiFi sputtering

I recently bought a new DVD player with optical output. I bought an optical cable to connect it to my iPod HiFi. However the only audio that emerges is this bizzare sputtering, like a tiny engine or something - "pff pff pff pff pff pff pff", etc. I'm new to the world of optical connections. Any guidance as to what this problem could be?
Standard RCA to miniplug works fine, but I really wanted to try this optical hookup thing.

The thing is that, even though iPod HiFi does have optical input, it does not have integrated digital decoder for multi-channel signal decoding. To put it in a few words, DVD audio is usually Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1/6.1/7.1. This is not possible to listen on iPod HiFi because it does not understand that complex signal and cannot translate it to analog audio output it supports, hence the digital buzzing sound you hear when you connect a digital optical source. Try playing a DVD with your Mac’s DVD Player app and change the sound output format from analog to digital when connected to iPod HiFi by optical cable and you will hear what I am trying to explain.

  • Optical cable from Macbook to Hi-Fi. No Audio

    Hi Guys
Help required. I want to listen to my Itunes and movies from my macbook via my HI-FI speakers. I've connected a Sandstrom digtial optical cable from the macbook (white) to my Panasonic SCPM29 HI-Fi (with optical out) but there is no audio coming out of the speakers. Input is set to AUX on Hi-fi.

I updated tonight and I now also have no audio in any way - I don't even get the remote clicks. Looking through these forums, it looks like this is a problem every time Apple TV updates? Anyway, I tried to follow a suggestion in another thread to connect to my computer and restore the previous firmware version but iTunes doesn't recognize the device (device driver installed fine but it doesn't show up in iTunes or as a USB device in My Computer (I have a PC)). So, maybe I'm doing something wrong but I'm a little annoyed that I now apparently own a $100 puck. Has anyone found a solution since the last time or any really simple instructions for rolling back an update? I won't be able to get to an Apple store until Tuesday and my blood pressure goes up now every time I look at the little box sitting there totally useless....
