Optical cable is in-volume control greyed out

Hi,
I just wondered if it possible (when using external speakers via optical cable)to control the volume by using the volume control (on the top right of screen)
-my slider is greyed out and the only way I can adjust the volume is within an application itself.

You're welcome! I think they were trying to make it easier by having a single volume level leaving your Mac and adjusting it only on one device. If you turn down the volume on the Mac and turn it up on the stereo, things could get really loud later when you switch your stereo to the radio!

I have just re-installed my audigy 2 nx and all related software and the controls for bass and treble are now greyed out and unusable, is this a software problem, i have videlogic fi've one speakers, what can i do to rectify it's

For the Audigy 2 NX , the tone controls are greyed out as this feature is not supported. You can use the Creative Graphic Equalizer application to do the bass and treble adjustments.

Why is the volume control grayed out?

Hi,
I am attempting to record from a Sony ECM-MS957 mike that is connected to my iBook with a Griffin iMic onto GarageBand3.
I am following the "Learn to Podcast" tutorials from Apple. With the Sony mic connected the volume control in the track info window is grayed out. If I un-plug the Sony mic and use the built in mic the volume control becomes active.
I have the iMic selected in the System Preferences and the volume indicator responds to the mic. The iMic is also selected in the GarageBand preferences.
Can someone explain to me what I am doing wrong here.

Controls greyed out, and how to "auto-organize"?

I just changed over to vista and had to download itunes again, and when I try to use it, it acts different. My "show duplicate songs" is greyed out, and it wont even let me drag songs from my library to my playlists anymore... any help appreciated.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
You can't. However, searching doesn't have to be harder:
There are three ways (at least) to get files from the iPhoto Window.
1. Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
2. File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
3. Show File: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Rolls in the iPhoto Window (View -> Film Rolls) correspond exactly with the Roll Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library Folder. You can move photos between Rolls, you can rename rolls, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Roll Name using the Info Pane, the Roll Folder in iPhoto Library Folder/Originals will also have the new name.
Also, in the iPhoto Window: Want to see the pics you took in a particular month or day, use the Calendar at lower left.

Stereo bluetooth problems ( Volume control & Video out of Sync )

I just got a Sony HB-IS800 Stereo Blue-tooth Headphone for my iPhone 3GS.
There are a number of problems with 3.0 and stereo blue-tooth.
1) The biggest issue is no volume control on the iphone when you connect your blue-tooth headphones. the sound is set at a loud volume and there is no way to adjust it at all.
2) The second issue playing video on the iphone and the sound on the headphones are out of sync with the video's audio about a second or two. Sometimes I play a movie and don't see this issue or it is not that bad. All video Podcast are always out of sync.
I have test this on my iMac and I can adjust the volume and don't have audio sync problem at all.
I was wondering if in the 3.1 iphone firmware are these issues fixed in anyway?

HT1338 HELP my speakers won't turn on and the volume is greyed out!

iTunes randomly crashed... hard.
I hard rebooted my computer, and now my speakers won't play any sounds.
when I press the volume keys, the logo for speakers is greyed out, and there is a circle with slash to indicate not allowed.
My volume bar in the menu bar is greyed out as well.
What in the name of all things holy is wrong with it and how can I fix it?

I have gone into the sound settings, and my options for output are the internal speakers, and the audio aggregate device, neither of them work.
I have also tried plugging in and pullin out headphones to no effect, and whenever there is headphones inside the jack, the same lack of volume/ volume options happens.
I even tried resetting the special Rama by restarting and holding command+ alt + r + p, and. It made the startup spud, and nothing else.
If someone could help me, I have a gig in a week, and this is not something I really have the time to deal with.

Boot Volume is greyed out and cannot be mounted.

I have a Kernel Panic that I cannot get rid of after multiple fix attempts. I cannot boot into Safe Mode which cancels out a lot of options. I have noticed something funny when I boot into the Panther Install disc to use Disk Utility, though.
The drive itself is labeled fine, but my boot disk,(74 gig Raptor, is greyed out and is not labeled as mounted. I try to click on mounted and it doesn't budge.
My storage driver, (250 gigt SATA) is fine however and is mounted properly. I do not have the option to repair or verify permissions on any of the drives but the option to repair the disk is still there.
Any ideas?

Sounds like you have some serious disk corruption. Can you run fsck?
1. Reboot/Startup holding your Command-S key down.
2. At the command line type the following and hit 'Return.'
/sbin/fsck -fy
3. After it has check/repaired your disk, type 'reboot' and hit 'Return' again. Unit will bootup normally.
If this does not work, you may need to try DiskWarrior short of reformatting the drive.

Check your sound system preferences output device.
Try smc and pram reset.
If you boot in safe mode does the problem still occur?
If you boot into another account does the problem still occur?

Troubling connection with iTunes (I have to jiggle the cable), and my volume bar drops out very often.

Whenever I am syncing my iPhone 4 (with iOS 6.1.3) via cable with iTunes, I have to jiggle the cable to get it to connect with iTunes. Also, whenever I'm listening to any kind of sound, sometimes the sound just drops out and the volume bar disappears.
I asked an Apple tech in the store, and he told me to restore the phone and set up as new phone. I have done this with no success. Any suggestions

try doing a soft reset. push and hold the home button and power button at the same time until the phone powers off completely. only release the buttons when you see the white apple pop back up on the screen if this doesn't work you will likely have to do a complete factory reset which can be found in general settings of the phone. hope this helps!

Gradient Controls greyed out and gradient picker absent.

When I change my text face from 'color' to 'gradient' I am not getting the usual options...I have restarted motion but no luck...about to try to trash preferences, but thought I'd check in if anyone's seen this before...

Hmmm, OK...trashed preferences made no difference. Now I'm confused.
Gradient controls show up if I create fresh text but not on this text layer.
It has an extrude filter, and in and out behaviour, and a scale through behaviour but turning these off does not restore the gradient tools.
However, if i select the text, then begin typing the gradient tools return.
Any suggestions?

Song volume sliders greyed out

I've just installed iTunes 9.0.2 to Windows 7, and though the install appeared to go just fine, some of the songs now have their options completely deactivated, such as their individual volume adjustment, EQ presets, and ability to make part of a gapless album. All of these options are grayed out on some songs, and for others they're still active.
I've authorized the account, made sure sound check is off, and there's no correlation between deactivated options and purchased songs, since both purchased and uploaded songs have this same problem. Is there some other option in iTunes I'm missing?

Check to see if the files are read only, or if they are in a fodler where your account does not have write access permission.

Possible fix for no audio & grayed-out volume control

Hi, I just thought I'd post this fix I found for my Mac Mini losing audio and also having the volume control grayed-out as if permanently muted.
I have had this problem a couple of times on my Intel 2 GHz Core 2 Duo Mac Mini. I have tried some of the software solutions found on the web such as zapping PRAM, deleting certain Plists, etc. But in my experience the fix that has worked is to open the Mac Mini and unseat and then reseat the orange Foxconn ribbon audio cable where it connects from the Mini's audio board to what I assume is the main circuit board. Then when you reassemble and turn on your Mac, audio will be back.
My theory is that unplugging and re-plugging USB and audio cables on the back of the Mini near the audio board eventually loosens the internal ribbon cable and causes the audio to stop working. My latest attempt at a permanent solution is to have USB and analog 2.5mm stereo audio 'extender' cables plugged in on the back of my Mini, which loop forwards over the top of the Mini where they are all taped down securely. This allows me to plug and unplug cables without ever disturbing the actual USB and audio ports on the back of the Mini. I am hoping this will help avoid the lost audio & grayed-out volume control problem in the future since the connection of the internal audio ribbon cable is less likely to be disturbed. It is a somewhat ugly solution but seems to be working so far. I'll post later on if the volume control gets grayed out again even with these measures.

I've also got this problem. I saw on another thread you were helping a lady who also lost the sound in her MBP, but then her disk crashed! If you can help me I'd appreciate it.
I've got sound on startup, but otherwise my volume is greyed out. Theres no red light in headphone socket.
I've posted the thread below on this topic but have had no replies, in my post I mention that when I use my bluetooth headset my volume works, but if I disable BT or remove the BT speaker device and then try to use my internal MBP speakers, no joy. I DON'T think its related to the BT speaker.
