Optical cable stuck in Apple TV

I have a first gen Apple TV and I plugged in an optical cable and now I can't get it out! The cable is working fine however and I don't have to remove it. I have applied a fair amount of pressure to the cable, anymore and I am frightened that something will break. Is there a trick to removing the optical cable?
Thank you

Hi,
I had the same experience. Maybe its the brand of cable? I think my cable is a belkin. It required a fair bit of force to remove the cable but I got it unplugged in the end without damaging the port. I plugged it in again to see if it was any easier to remove it the second time and it seemed a bit easier but still required excessive force to remove the cable. I suppose you shouldnt need to remove the cable very often once you have it set up but way too much force just to remove a plug!

  • Is there a way to have audio only come through the optic cable and video come only through HDMI on Apple TV 3rd Gen?

I currently have a digital optic cable hook up from my Apple TV 3 to my receiver and a HDMI hook up from my Apple TV 3to my flat screen. The audio is coming out of my TV speakers and receiver at the same time. I was wonder if there was a way to switch the audio output from the Apple TV 3 to the digital optic cable and only have video come out of the HDMI? I really only plan on using my receiver for the audio for my Apple TV 3. I know that I can just mute the TV but I wanted to know if there was a way to switch the feed. Thanks

There is an option on my TV but if I do that I lose all my audio on the TV. I have 3 HDMI ports on my Flat Screen. One is for my cable, one is for my PS3 (BTW the PS3 has an option to switch the audio feed so it will come out of the digital optic cable and leave video for the HDMI), and the last one is for my Apple TV 3. If I switch to external speakers I will lose my audio for the cable. I was hoping there was a way to switch the audio feed on the Apple TV 3.

  • Connecting apple tv to a receiver via optical cable

I connected my apple TV via a digital optical cable to the yamaha receiver RX-V477,but I have not figure out how to hear the music that is coming from the apple tv. Can you help me with the set-up in the yamaha receiver. Thanks

    Hey mgrossi,
The Apple TV's optical digital-audio port, also known as as TOSLINK, carries both audio and video signal when used with the proper cable. See this article for reference -

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
HDMI is required to connect the Apple TV to a TV or through a receiver. The optical connection is for audio only.

  • Apple Tv sound dropout with optical cable

    Hi there,
First of all Merry Christmas to everybody out there...
I received yesterday for christmas the latest apple TV.
I connected it to my tv with HDMI cable and to hifi, bose home cinema lifestyle 28, with optical cable.
Sound through HDMI cable is perfect but...playing music from macbook pro or iphone 4S through optical cable is a problem.
I have sound drop outs for a second now and then...
Cable is well attached on both sides...
What do i have to do?
    Kind regards,
    Laurent

I also have this problem...  Any ideas

  • Correct optical cable for Apple TV  3rd gen

I have now purchased two optical cables that were supposed to work with Apple TV. Neither had the correct end that would fit into the Apple TV. This shouldn't be that hard!! Can someone please point me to a link to the correct cable? Google searches bring up info about connecting, but do not say what cable to get.
    thanks!
    Joe

Thank you for this. I even described and gave the details of the last cable I bought when I called apple a few moments ago, and he said it was the correct one, and it wasn't. I see on the link you provided that there is an adaptor. It looks like the one I have has one long end (no adaptor) and one small square end. My sound system needs the same square end as the Apple TV takes. So, I just ordered what I think is the correct one.
    thanks so much,
    Joe

My apple TV is connected to a DTV with an HDMI cable and to my Yamaha receiver via optic cable. We rented a movie on Apple TV and.found that the movie played, but we only got audio for music tracks. Voice tracks were silent using both TV and receiver.  This only occurred on the rented video and on recorded shows on my cable DVR. previews and other content on Apple TV are fine. Any ideas??

Previews and trailers do not contain 5.1 audio.
If you have recently moved your setup, you may have inadvertently changed some of the settings on your receiver. It certainly sounds as though it is unable to play the 5.1 audio from the Apple TV.

  • Apple TV v5 - optical cable question

If I already have HDMI cable going from the apple tv into my TV, is there any point to getting any optical cable?I know nothing about audio systems, etc, and was wondering if also putting the Optical audio cable from the apple tv into the flat tv or a sound receive will be better for sound?
Right now, I have no sound system...just a sony bravia KDL with an optical port
HDMI Cable going into the tv from the Apple TV, and optical cable plugged into the Apple TV, but was wondering if i should plug it into the bravia as well.

Your TV optical might be an output rather than an input - check the manual.
There will be no appreciable difference between HDMI and optical for audio when connected to the same hardware - some older surround kit (like mine) only has optical not HDMI.  Either can handle surround sound or stereo.  In my case I have HDMI to TV and optical to amp which has no HDMI.

  • Cannot get new Apple TV to send audio to my 2 year old Dennon Receiver, tried HDMI and digial optical cable.  Any suggestions?

Just purchased Apple TV.  HDMI works fine direct to Sony TV, but want audio through my Dennon Receiver and speakers.  Tried the digital optical cable, no sound.  Connect Apple Tv HDMI directly to Receiver, no sound or picuture.  Ops manual indicates this is suppose to work.  Contact Apple support and they offered no solutions?  My son has similar system and it works fine via HDMI.  What am I missing?

I am far from an expert but recently connected my tv, directv receiver and Apple TV to a Pioneer Surround Sound Receiver and was pleased that it worked.  Here are some things I read as I was setting all this up:
    1.  TV must have an HDMI ARC input for it to support audio.  You would connect the HDMI output from the receiver to this HDMI ARC input on your tv.  My tv manual , (Sony Bravia tv) did not mention an HDMI ARC input nor was it marked that way on the tv's HDMI input on the back but I used HDMI 1 and it works.  If you don't have HDMU ARC, you probably already know you have to use a digital optical connection.
    2.  Regardless of whether you use HDMI or digital optical connections, there are still some settings you have to make on the tv and receiver for audio.  Consult your tv and receiver manuals for these settings.

  • Optical cable does not work in Apple TV Software v4.2

    Hi,
Before I upgraded 4.2, I could hear audio from optical cable and could see video from HDMI.
In my case, my display can play audio with HDMI, but I prefer to using optical cable for home theater system. Therefore I usually set the volume 0 on the display.
However, after the upgrade, the audio did not come from optical cable but only from HDMI as ususal.
I tried the following things but I could not get it better.
    - Reboot AppleTV
    - Reset AppleTV
    - Restore AppleTV
    - Reconnect optical cable and HDMI cable
    - Restart my audio system.
    - Restart my display
Does anyone have similar situation after upgrading 4.2?

I KNOW! haha, I hate how simplified the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi service is.. I hope that Cisco would enable advanced settings in their next firmware upgrade for advanced users..
You are pretty lucky to have the EA2700 model. Cisco provides official support for people who do not like the Smart Wi-Fi service to revert back to the classic Web based setup but ends classic web for EA6500. If you feel like trying it out then give it a go! You can make a back up of all your router settings to your computer so if the classic web setup doesn't work for you then you can always upgrade back to the current "Smart" version and restore all your settings.
Here are the links to that:
This one talks about the benefits of having "Smart" Wi-Fi and tells you that you can downgrade if you don't like it:

This link pretty much tells you how to do it:
    http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?pid=80&vw=1&articleid=25856
UPDATE: I forgot to mention, to back up your current configuration; When you log in to Smart Wi-Fi just click "Troubleshooting", and click the "Diagnostics" Tab and you should see your Backup and Restore settings.

  • Is Optical cable necessary if you have HDMI?

Just got the new Apple TV. If the HDMI is supplying both Audio and Video, is it really necessary to also hook up the Optical? Thanks in advance.

it entirely depends on your individual setup.
if you are connecting the appletv to an amp via HDMI then no, you don't need to use optical.
if you are connecting appletv direct to your TV via HDMI and you want DD5.1 audio, you would then connect the optical cable to your DD5.1 speakers/amp.

  • Can you use the HDMI Out and the Optical Cable out at the sametime?

I would like to connect the HDMI out cable from Apple TV to connect to the HDMI digital video/audio connection to my stereo and connect the optical out on the Apple TV and connect to my Zone 2 on the same reviever.
Can I use both these Apple TV outputs at the same time or can you only use one at a time?

Yes, lots of conflicting reports, sometimes things can change from one AppleTv firmware to another.
I had assumed PJJW12 was planning on viewing and also outputting audio to Zone 2.
I assume the AppleTv would be hooked to the Av amp - might be worth seing if the current HDMI audio could be routed to Zone 2 to avoid need for an adapter.    However the AppleTV is connected if there is a TV involved and audio processing gets passed through it may also be possible to take analogue out from a TV and perhaps route that to Zone 2.

Have not backed up for months, so prefer not to lose the data.
Thank you for your help in advance.

Restore iPhone with iTunes on computer. Open iTunes on computer. Connect iPhone to computer with USB cable. Hold both Home and Power buttons until iTunes recognizes iPhone in Recovery Mode, usually about 20 seconds time of holding both buttons. Click the Update or Restore button that iTunes offers.

=> First of all Start your Computer and then connect with Internet connection, now Download the latest version of the iTunes application
=> Now install the iTunes application in your System and connect your Device with computer via Data cable
=> Now connect your Device with iTunes application and then Tab on summary option, see in the left side bar of iTunes
=> Now Select restore option from iTunes and then confirm the Restore Message for better results. After this unplug your Device and Restart it
    I hope that will surely

  • TOSlink optical cable for a Ma Pro? How does it work?

Not sure if this is the place for this question or not, but I am trying to find out more information about the optical audio in/out section of the Mac Pro. On Apple's description page it claims that a regular TOSlink optical cable will work in those slots, but by looking at them, it doesn't seem like it would fit at all. Does a piece in the middle of the optical audio port go inwards? How would you ever be able to get a TOSlink cable to fit it? Anyone have any pictures of an optical cable inserted into a Mac Pro so I can see how it all works?
I know this might seem like a rather absurd question, but I am trying to figure out if I can plug my old stereo surround sound amp into my Mac Pro to use it for audio. Thanks for the help!

There are covers that will swing in out of the way as you press a connector against them. At least this is the case on my Mac Pro..
