Optical connection to Apple TV

The Toslink cable i purchased does not seem to connect securely to Apple TV.  Is there more than one style of cable?

Got it worked out.

  • I would like to connect my Apple TV to my receiver using an HDMI cable and pass thru dolby digital. I do not have optical inputs on my receiver.

I want to connect my Apple TV to my receiver using an HDMI cable. This should allow me to pass thru high definition video and simultaneously decode Dolby Digital material with an HDMI connection from my receiver to my TV without the use of an optical cable (my receiver does not have an optical input). I am unable to decode 5.1 material and don't understand why this is not working. In the audio setting I have Dolby Digital output turned on.

Are you sure the content you are playing has Dolby Digital.

  • My apple TV optical connection is not working with optical to analog adapter after the update to 6.0.

When i bought the apple tv, i could listen to my iPhone's music on my home's audio system, which was connected to the apple tv through a digital to analog audio converter. It was working until the apple tv upgrade to 6.0. I tried connecting the apple tv directly to another amplifier with optical input and it worked fine, i tried the converter on the play station and it worked as well. I switched the DD on the apple tv settings from Auto to on and the problem remains. Any ideas?

Try switching Dolby digital to off.

HDMI is required to connect the Apple TV to a TV or through a receiver. The optical connection is for audio only.

  • How to connect my apple TV to an analogue ampli / hifi system

Hello, i have been looking for an answer to this question for quite some time.
I would like to stream my music on my hifi system using apple TV as an airport express.
I found out that this was possible by connecting the apple TV through the optical port to my hifi system.
My ampli has only analague RCA ports. Is there a way to link these two with a good quality? I found "Digital to analogue converter" on the web but will it work? which brand should i choose to get a good quality?
    thank you very much

You can use the remote app on iPhone but that would require home sharing to be setup and both on the same network. If that's not the case you will need a new remote.

  • How to Connect My Apple TV to My Panasonic SC-PT760 Home Theater

    Hello;
I currently use the Panasonic SC-PT760 as the Home Theater DVD Player which only has 1 HMDI output and connects directly to the HD TV, also I have the Direct TV connected to the Home Theather via AUX.
I am wondering how should I connect my apple TV, if I would like to connect ut via HMDI. Is a HMDI switch an option or what should I do ?
    Please advise.

You can purchase HDMI switches but don't expect them to work perfectly in _every_ configuration. What I mean is that your mileage may vary, it may work, or it may not. However, chances are good that it will but I'd make certain that you can return the HDMI switch if it doesn't work correctly when paired with you DVD player and the Apple TV and your HDTV.
By the way, does your TV have component inputs? If so you can use the Apple TV's component outputs to get HD but then you'll have to route the audio from the Apple TV either over standard RCA stereo plugs or via the digital audio optical connection on the Apple TV (assuming again that your HDTV has optical audio inputs, but I see that you receiver has an optical input so that should work too).

  • I am trying to connect my Apple TV to an older Panasonic projection TV using an HDMI to a DVI cable to the Digital IN. I cannot get any sound. Can you help?

I am trying to connect my Apple TV to an older Panasonic projection TV using an HDMI to a DVI cable to the Digital IN. I cannot get any sound. Can you help?

DVI interface does't allow audio. Is there optical IN from your Panasonic TV? By then you can connect your ATV to Panasonic using optical together. It will work.

  • After connecting my Apple TV this morning, I have no sound. It is hooked up to play through my television speakers. Any ideas on how to get sound? Also, I tried hooking it up through my surround receiver, but could not get it to come up on my ty screen.

After connecting my Apple TV this morning, I have no sound. It is hooked up to play through my television speakers. Any ideas on how to get sound? Also, I tried hooking it up through my surround receiver, but could not get it to come up on my ty screen, what can I do to correct this problem?

Have you tried adjusting the "Audio Out" and the "Dolby Digital" settings in settings > audio and video? It may be worth trying several combinations of these settings, although typically it is the "Dolby Digital" setting that causes most problems for users.
Also make sure that you have correctly mapped the input port on your sound system to the output, if you are unsure about how to do this, refer to the manual that came with your sound system.
Have you tried playing various content sources (i.e. podcasts, music, iTunes Store video, other video etc), do you have the same problem with all types of content? If you use optical you might also check that you can see a red light at the end of your optical audio cable. Is your optical audio cable plugged straight into your sound system, or does it go through a switch or other device?

  • When I connect my Apple TV to a computer monitor there is video but no audio. How can I get the audio to work?

The headphone jack on the monitor doesn't seen to work with the Apple TV either.

Welcome to the Apple Community MPR888.
What type of connection are you using on your monitoe, if DVI, DVI doesn't carry audio, you will need to use the optical connection for audio.

  • Audio Problem connecting external apple speaker to iMac

When I connect my Apple HIFI External Speaker to the audio out at the back of my iMac with the apple RCA optical cable, I can no longer control volume with the apple keyboard.
I can only control the volume with the apple remote.
    1. Any suggestions to maintain keyboard control as well
    Thanks

When you connect the third-party monitor, you can use System Preferences -> Displays to control the external monitor. You may have your preferences set to Mirror the iMac's display. But if the resolution (pixels supported by the external screen) does not match the iMac display, then it will not display properly. You need to uncheck the Mirror option in that instance. When the display is not a 'mirror', you need to drag some content (windows) to the external display to see what you want to work on there.
Once the system detects your external monitor, you can make that change. You also need to line up the two monitors in the way you wish to move content between them and which monitor you want to display the Apple menu bar. For example, the iMac display may have its right side aligned with the left side of the external display so you can drag windows through the right side of the iMac screen and they'll appear on the left side of the external display.
You also drag the Apple menu bar to the external display if you'll be working with programs using the external display. You can set resolution and other things on the two displays independently.
    Hope this helps.

  • Speakers and optical connection

    Hi there,
I just got a new Mac Pro and I'm wondering if there are any audio/speaker solutions out there that allow you to use the optical out, which I assume is the cleaner, better way to connect.
Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks.

The answer to your question about optical being noticeably better than analog is highly subjective.
IMO 98% of consumers would not notice the difference because their listening environment, the source material, and the combination of all the elements of their playback systems would combine to make it impossible to pick out the optical connection as the source for an improvement in sound quality.
Really, all that is happening is that you are depending on the D/A conversion of the speakers (logitech in this example) instead of the D/A converters built into the Mac. I would guess that both are very similar in quality, as they are both low-end consumer devices. I say that knowing that the logitechs seem expensive, and of course your MacPro is big $, but consumer devices try to do so many things that compromises are made in the pricing of the parts at the component level. They need to do this to make products that the majority of people can actually afford. In the case of the MacPro, Apple knows that the true high-end audio users (music production) are going to have commited after-market products to do their D/A conversion, so they don't need to put extra $ into the built in ones... I doubt many of the true, nose-in-the-air, audiophile types would consider a PC as an appropriate audio source when there are turntables, custom CD players that cost thousands, tube amplifiers, etc etc blah blah that only the true connoisseur would use...lol
Most consumers these days are listening to MP3s anyway, so your source material is compromised right from the beginning.
Most listening environments where a computer is being used are not optimised in order to hear that last 1-2% of "quality" difference that may or may not be linked to the cabling/connection type of the audio monitoring systems that are being used.
The real advantage you get from using the optical output is that it is the only way to get surround out of the Mac (without buying other after market gear) but your speaker system still needs to be capable of doing the decoding. Thats why the logitech system fills that niche. YMMV

  • HT201335 I want to hook up an Apple TV device to my TV but only have one HDMI connection that's already used  for my HD cable box. Can I connect the Apple TV device to my TV that has  s video, PC in and  component jacks unused ?

I want to hook up Apple TV but my One HDMI Jack on my TV is already connected to my HD cable box. My TV has jacks for s video, component, and PC in jacks.
Can I use one of them to connect to Apple TV with some type of cable to my newer I-pad ?

  • How do i connect my apple ID with itunes?

I keep on trying to sign into itunes with my apple id, but it never works . How do I connect my apple ID with itunes?

To change the iCloud ID you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted to turn off Find My iDevice, then sign back in with the ID you wish to use.
You may find that when you try to do this, the password for your old ID it isn't accepted.  If this happens, and if your old ID is an earlier version of your current ID, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iDevice on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.
