Optical Digital Output Always On

I have a 1-month old 2009 Mac Pro. The Optical Digital Audio Output (red light) is on in the back, but I do not use it. Is this a normal behavior? I've read one one post that it was normal but I was also told it is a "hardware issue" and isn't supposed to do that. Anyone else? Thanks.

Let me also add, that in addition to the optical light always being on, sometimes when I wake my Mac from sleep, the "volume" and other alerts sounds come out of the internal speaker (even though it's set to Line Out). The only way to restore the alert sounds so they come from Line Out is to plug headphones into the front Line Out port or to logout/login. That's strange!! (I thought the update to 10.6.3 might address it, but I am feeling like it's something else).
??? Anyone have these same problems ???
((I tried trashing /Library/Preferences/com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist and com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist - but it didn't help. I see a folder called Audio with these same to files, maybe I'll try trashing them all again.))

  • Question on the optical digital output.

    Can anyone with a new iMac give me some clue as to what the optical digital output looks like?
    As I understand it, its combined with a headphones port, this is where I am confused.
    Does it look like a standard Phono type input (Coaxial) or does it have a little red light shining out?
    I need to know before I order as I want to output to dac.
    Cheers

    The optical Jack is just like the normal mini-jack you use for the headphones.
    You have to look for a "mini-toslink" cable or adapter. Since most receiver have Toslink digital input, you should buy a toslink-toslink cable and a mini-toslink adapter.
    you put the mini-toslink in the headphone output port and the mac automatically switches to digital output.
    If you want to watch to a movie in DVD player, insert the DVD, press play, press stop, go to DVDplayer>preferences>sound output>digital output.
    I have to choose it every time I watch to a DVD...

  • New Macbook Air: optical digital output audio?

    Does new (July 2011) Macbook Air have a digital output audio  so I could connect it via optical cable to my receiver when i'm watching movies.

    It doesn't appear so. The MBA spec sheet only states
    Headphone port
    whereas the also new Mac mini has
    Audio line in minijack (digital/analog)
    Audio line out/headphone minijack (digital/analog)

  • Toslink optical digital output

    My airport express works fine when I use the analog output cable into my stereo. However, when I use a toslink cable I get no output. Do I need to activate the optical digitial output in the airport express menu?

    FWIW. iTunes uses a QuickTime CODEC to convert audio files to Apple Lossless, and then, uses AirTunes to send them to the AX. In turn, the AX uses built-in software that converts the Apple Lossless to an Encoded Digital Audio format. From there, digital audio is sent to a optical transceiver to convert the electrical signal to an optical one before sending it to the innermost part of the audio port. For analog, the AX has a built-in DAC to convert the Encoded Digital Audio to Analog which is sent to the same audio port.
    Since, you are getting a good analog output, you know at least the DAC is working properly. Unfortunately, it does still sound like there is something amiss with the optical transceiver in the AX ... or the calibration of the digital signal between the AX and your stereo. If your stereo has multiple digital inputs, I would suggest (if you haven't tried already) is to use a different port.
    ... and you may still want to try another cable. I had a similar issue between my MacMini and Logitech speaker system that perplexed me until I tried another TOSlink cable. Trust me, I triple-checked the original cable, which did work with other equipment, but just not between these two.

  • Make USB-6001 digital output always high or low in C

    Hello all,
    I am new to the NI DAQ interface. I have an USB-6001 and I am trying to use this device to control some logic circuit in C. So what I want to do is:
    * set some digital output lines to high or low levels, and change their status when needed (in C).
    I have tested the device in NI MAX -> Test Panels, and found that the device is able to do this. Then I try to do it in C. I hace checked the examples, and the function I should use is the one called "DAQmxWriteDigitalU32". I have problem in understanding its input parameters. I have tried something with my own understanding, but it does not work as I expected. Here is one test I did:
    uInt32   data=1;
    int32 written;
    TaskHandle taskHandle=0;
    DAQmxErrChk (DAQmxCreateTask("",&taskHandle));
    DAQmxErrChk (DAQmxCreateDOChan(taskHandle,"Dev1/port0/line7","",DAQmx_Val_ChanForAllLines));
    DAQmxErrChk (DAQmxStartTask(taskHandle));
    DAQmxErrChk (DAQmxWriteDigitalU32(taskHandle,1,1,10.0,DAQmx_Val_GroupByChannel,&data,&written,NULL));
    taskHandle=0;
    DAQmxErrChk (DAQmxCreateTask("",&taskHandle));
    DAQmxErrChk (DAQmxCreateDOChan(taskHandle,"Dev1/port0/line0","",DAQmx_Val_ChanForAllLines));
    DAQmxErrChk (DAQmxStartTask(taskHandle));
    DAQmxErrChk (DAQmxWriteDigitalU32(taskHandle,1,1,10.0,DAQmx_Val_GroupByChannel,&data,&written,NULL));
    I want to simply set "Dev1/port0/line7" and "Dev1/port0/line0" to high level, but only "Dev1/port0/line0" responds me. The second parameter of the function DAQmxWriteDigitalU32 corresponds to numSampsPerChan. If i replace it (currently 1) with a larger value, e.g. 100, I can see that "Dev1/port0/line7" sends a number of 1 out, then return back to 0. So I guess the problem is just that I do not understand well all parameters of the function DAQmxWriteDigitalU32. Can anyone please tell me how I can set a digital output line to 1 or 0?
    Thanks!

    Hello,
    Here is a link explaining the inputs of function:

  • How do I turn off Optical Digital Output??

    My 15" macbook pro's digital optical output has turned on (the red light is on inside the headphone port) and i want to turn it off... but how??

    try and rapidly insert and remove the headphones in the audio jack.  The toggle switch is stuck in the position that makes your mac think the headphones are still plugged in.  You need to flip it back.

  • Optical Digital Output Settings

    I have a recent Vbox running the latest software and GUI
    I want to be able to set the optical output to 2 channel only (for use with a DAC), but I don't seem to have any settings available to me in the Settings menus. Is there a way of disabling teh 5.1 output to force 2 channel only?
    Mr Perceptive (or lack of it at the moment!)

    Possibly, but only if the phono outputs are controlled by the Vbox volume control, usually phono outputs are at line level and not under the control of the volume control. I'don't really want to try without some form of attenuation (don't really want to collect my speaker cones from the other side of the room!!!)

  • No sound since 10.4.9 update- locked in optic digital output?

    Hi
    My computer seems to be locked in digital out. The built-in speakers don't even appear as an option, and there's the red glow coming out of the headphone jack. Am i doing something wrong? This happened just after the 10.4.9 update.
    mikel

    This is a known issue, and people have been dealing with this since the first MBPs came out last January, its not a 10.4.9 issue. Try plugging and unplugging something in the audio jack a few times to see if it will turn off.

  • Optical audio output specs

    What sample rates and frequencies can the optical audio output handle?
    Is 96kHz/24bit available?

    I am not convinced you've given a valid answer. Maybe if I elaborate a bit more...
    I have a song in iTunes that is in the Apple lossless format. The song is sampled at 96kHz/24bit.
    When I play that song via AirTunes to an Airport Express, the optical digital output of the Airport Express provides 48kHz/24bit to the input of my standalone D/A converter. It appears that somewhere between iTunes and the Airport Express the audio information is down-sampled from a 96/24 signal to 48/24 signal.
    So my original question, rephrased, is: when I play a 96/24 Apple Lossless file in iTunes, and send that song via AirTunes to AppleTV, what is the sample rate at the optical digital output of the Apple TV? Does Apple TV, like Airport Express, down-sample the digital information, or does it pass the ausio information through at the full 96/24 bitrate of the audio file?

  • 2012 Airport Express Digital Output

    Does the new 2012 AE pass 24 bit 192Khz audio from the optical digital output?

    Ok I bought one to answer my own question: can't get it pass anything > than 16-bit 44.1 KHz when tested with an iMac & Airfoil by setting the OSX system output to rates >44.1 KHz.

  • Optical Digital Audio in

    i have a imac a1208 and in the booklet it says that the line in is an optical digital input, but everywhere i look how to use it says that i only have an optical digital output.whats goin on and how do i use it.

    "Компьютер Apple iMac A1208 (MA590RS/A)" looks like a late C2D 17"
    Audio In / Optical Audio in port
    The Audio In port accommodates both digital optical input and analog audio input. Analog audio line input is accepted through a 3.5mm mini phone jack. The sound input jack accepts line-level stereo signals up to 24-bit stereo 44.1-192kHz sampling rate. It also accepts a stereo miniplug-to-RCA cable adapter for connecting stereo equipment to the computer.
    Optical audio input is SPDIF format and uses a standard Toslink cable with a Toslink mini-plug adapter, accepting up to 24-bit stereo and 44.1-96kHz sampling rate.
    The iMac (Late 2006) also has a built-in microphone near the built-in iSight camera at the top of the computer screen bezel.
    Headphone out / Optical audio out port
    The headphone / line output jack accommodates both digital optical audio output and analog audio output with a 24-bit, 16-96 kHz D/A converter. For analog headphone / line output a standard audio cable with 3.5mm plastic or nylon optical plug should be used.

  • Problem with Optical Audio Output

    Hi, all. I'm running my audio out through the optical digital output on my Mac Pro. Recently, I've developed a problem with iTunes, where certain tracks are distorted and others play extremely softly. There is no problem when I run the audio out through the headphone jack...it's only a problem through the optical output.
    Furthermore, when I go to Audio MIDI setup, it says "Output is not supported" for the optical digital output, when I've read that I should be able to make adjustments to it here.
    Does anyone know what might be causing a problem with my optical output? Thanks so much!

    Look in iTunes' "Playback" preferences. Try turning off "Crossfade", "Sound Enhancer", and "Sound Check"/

  • Optical audio output for IMAC

    My new IMAC 2.66gh 24" is coming. Just wondering if the IMAC can output true bit stream audio signal through the toslink cable. I have a Logitec 5400 THX 5.1 Speaker system support THX, Dolby Digital, DTS hard decode. What I heard from other website saying is IMAC can only output 2.1 channel audio sound through optical. If that is true then my 5.1 speaker system is useless.

  • How to connect Digital Optical Audio output iMac with Receiver Input

    I have connected iMac with onkyo hts-3300 home theater system receiver through optical audio TosLink Cable.( http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Optical-Audio-TosLink-Cable/dp/B001ZU3G2I/ref=sr12?ie=UTF8&qid=1292865309&sr=8-2 ). Unfortunately there is no sound coming out from the Home theater system. I have verified the Receiver optical input is working fine by connecting with my TV optical audio digital out put and the it's working great. The only difference between TV and iMac is, on my TV, it has optical audio digital output and I can use this cable (http://www.amazon.com/Tripp-Lite-A102-02M-Digital-connectors/dp/B0002WPREU/ref=s r11?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1297320792&sr=1-1) to make it work. I can also verified my optical audio TosLink Cable working because I can see the red light coming out from the cable. So the only problem could be from iMac. I doubt I need to change the additional setting to configure iMac to use external optical audio setting instead of the buit in audio setting. Hoe can I able to do it? or my iMac(IMAC 21.5"/3.06/2X2GB/500GB/9400M-ITP
    MB950ZP/A) doesn't support optical digital audio out put? I have follow this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12769423&#12769423 and to my surprise which doesn't work out for me. I doubt that i need to change some setting, but when I got to setting>> sound I cannot change any setting. I was quite depressed aldy. Can someone answer my question as i m a newbie here. Thanks a lot

    Thank you very much for your reply.
    @Király : May i know how to Open Audio Midi Setup? Is this Audio Midi Setup is in the locatated in the Setting in Mac Snow Leapord OS? or how to locate this "Audio Midi Setup " in Mac enviroment. Is it possible to open this Audio Midi Setup in windows 7 enviroment also? I Just want to get the audio from my iMac in Hts-3300 onkyo home theatre. YOur help is much appreciated
    @rkaufmann87 : Thank you very much for your sharing about this http://www.apple.com/airportexpress/ connection. for me what i understand is the digital audio output in airportexpress is the same as the audio out put in iMac in terms of details sepcs. So this airportexpress will only help you connect wirelessly to home theatre system, rather than waired connection. Other than that nothig much difference. So there is no point for me to spend extra bucks to attain the wireless connection. Unless the airportexpress have optical digital input, which i believe not. Correct me if I m worng, thanks
