Optical drive automatically turns off due to power saver

I had a problem not being able to burn a disc
http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/Satellite-Laptops-A-Series/missing-burning-drive-please-help/td-p/22362...
that I solved myself when I figured out it was because the optical drive turned off on its own.
My new problem is how do I get the optical drive to stay on or to be able to turn it on when I need it?  Doing a search in the forums here I found several other people with this problem but no good solution.  Unless I am missing it?
I did see the suggestion of going into the advanced power settings and making sure the optical drive power management was set to on for both plugged in and battery power.  This does not solve the problem though because my computer randomly turns the optical drive on and off as indicated by a pop up bubble in the right side of my task bar.  I also tried pressing fn and tab to change the setting but this does not work either.
How the heck do I get the thing to stay on?
Im running windows 7 64 bit and have a sattelite A660

I know it's been a while since Amber posted this, but I just ran into this same problem and want to share what worked for me, when nothing else did. My CD/DVD drive was not reading CDs at all and was not showing up under My Computer. It kept telling me the Optical Drive was off, when in fact the energy settings had it turned on. I tried everything that everyone else suggested and nothing worked. I finally found this page that solved my problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116
**Note: on my computer, under Device Manager, my disk drive was giving a Code 19 error, which is a problem with the registry and therefore affects the optical drive. Apparently this fix can work for that, as well as some other error codes. As always, use caution when editing registries. Make sure you have the right path before doing anything.
I hope this helps someone else out there from having to pay money to fix a simple coding problem! (Toshiba wanted to charge me $49!)

I am working with Georgia DOT and we have created an app to track our state vehicles using IPhone 5. My question is: will an iPhone automatically turn off location services?  If it goes below a certain battery power level, and if so how do you disable this in settings.

I don't believe that this will happen, however, the entire iPhone will shut down when the iPhone reaches the auto-shutdown power level. There is no way to turn that Off other that connecting the iPhone to power.

Try a reset. Hold the sleep/wake and home buttons together until you see the Apple logo and then release. The phone will reboot. You may need to connect the device to the charger before you attempt the reset.

  • Grey screen with message "turn off computer with power button until switch off then press again power button"

    Dear all,
I'm very hungry with my iMac and my Time Capsule :
I try for two weeks to restore my iMac without any success...
I wait 80 hours to finally have the message again and again : "to restart your computer : turn off computer with power button until switch off then press again power button".
But my iMac do not work !
    Could you help me?

    Hello, that's a kernel panic...
    http://thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X 10.6 Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • HT1510 how do I continue to charge my ipod shuffle once the computer automatically turns off?

How do I continue to charge my ipod shuffle once the computer automatically turns off from lack of imput.

If the shuffle's light turns off, it is not charging.  The computer needs to be active, so that the USB port has power.  You'll need to set the computer so that it turns off the display after inactivity, but the computer remains "awake."
Or, you can get a USB power adapter, like this
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD810LL/A/apple-5w-usb-power-adapter
and charge the shuffle on the power adapter.

  • Satellite M60/M55: Turns off after disconnecting power

Reposting because the original threads are locked.
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=15285&messageID=55746
My M60 sometimes turns off immediately after unplugging mains power (either the AC mains or DC plug from the laptop), instead of resuming on battery power, although the battery is full.
The battery is OK & the laptop starts up regularly on battery power after pushing the on switch.
The Toshiba Power Saver seems to work OK & I have the latest BIOS.
I always save my work before disconnecting, but I still don't like this behavior & would appreciate some good advice.
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=19092
Satellite M55 turns off when disconnecting power cable when disconnecting my laptop from the outlet rather than switching to the battery, my laptop will often simply turn off even though the battery is completely charged. Other times things work as they should.
I had the motherboard replaced for another reason and was fairly surprised to notice the problem after replacement (but without OS reinstall).
The main suspect is the TPS and its driver; some months ago a new version was released on Toshiba support site for M60 (though the file dates are not fresh, and I believe I have installed this version earlier).
So, I removed both TPS and TPS driver. I tested many times and it did not happen again. Not even when I reinstalled them.
While testing I turned off HD write caching to avoid file corruption problems (but this slows down HD operation, most notably hibernation).
I'm not sure if this actually works because also earlier the computer would shut down just occasionally, not every time. But this may be a clue in case you have this problem. If you do, please test and report the result, no matter what the outcome is.

What to say dude. The problem is that this issue happens ONLY sometimes and therefore its not easy to locate the real reason for such shutdowns.
However, I would try to provide some useful hints but first of all it would be useful to know how old your battery is.
Fact is that old and stressed batteries lose the own performance very quickly.
My battery is about 3 years old and my notebook would run on the battery for about 10-20 seconds even though its fully charged. The performance is simple very weak!
At the other hand the issue could be related to the faulty power supply electronic on the board
As you see its not easy to say whats exactly wrong and as already suggested in the other threads (locked) you should ask a technician for a notebook check.
The guys could run some diagnostic tests and could locate fault.
    Best regards

  • Does iPod nano automatically turns off if not used in 2 minutes?

Does iPod nano automatically turns off if not used in 2 minutes?
this is the questions tha runs my mind bcoz I just bought it about 2 weeks ago and just this recently I noticed that it automatically switches off after 2 minutes if remained untouched even if i did not set the sleep mode. Well, it normally functions coz during playing a song it does not sleeps but by the time pausing the song and after two minutes the nano switches off, but if you press any key it goes back again and you can play the paused song again. is this thing normal? i am really bothered by this. please help me THANKS A LOT

I recently bought a 2nd Generation 8Gb iPod Nano and can state for a fact that if you pause a song for exactly two minutes the device will turn off, probably to save batttery power. I tested it three times already and clocked it.
However, I also noticed that my iPod also seems to turn off by itself (even when sleep / timer is not selected) when I'm shuffling through songs using the forward/next and/or rewind/back buttons repeatedly.
Is this normal, or just a bad coincidence?
I've tried the 5 Rs but the problem persists. It really annoys me because I have the habit of skipping lots of songs.
