Optical Drive Burn Fails Error 4200

I have a new optical DVD writer (also burns cds, etc.) and if I use Nero software to burn .mp3 files or .acc files no problem. But when I try to burn a cd from within iTunes (mp4) it says burn failed - unknown error 4200.
I have removed and reinstalled iTunes, have updated the firmware on the new drive, have tried burning at a slower rate. I have spoken with both iTunes and the manufacturer with no resolution. It is a Samsung SATA optical drive.
Anyone got ideas?
Thanks

Thank you for your help!
At one point in the last few days i did run out of disk space on one drive, but i think i had 5Gig free on the short drive when i was trying it earlier, and i have upped that to 30.
My spindled HP DV-16Xs worked on the drive i had before pretty darn well.. I've tried a bunch of unlabeled ones, i've also tried burning at 1x, and i went out and bought some jewel cased verbatim dvd-r 16Xs, same problem.
I will take one more shot at finding the best media using that website, get some 8Xs if i can find them, before hauling it into apple.
without the dvd burner it's hard to backup very well, I was planning to get a external hard drive next month.

  • Optical Drive Has Failed - Can I disable it, what's next?

My 2 year old Mac Mini's optical drive has failed.
I had finished importing a CD and went to eject it and all I heard was grinding and the CD would not come out. I tired everything under the sun to get the disk to eject with nothing working, so I took it to my local Apple Care Center.
Their diagnosis is the optical drive has failed. So now what?
    1. They removed the CD, but my Optical Drive is still grinding and it is driving me crazy (the grinding is not continuous, but happens every 8 seconds to 10 seconds)! What can I do, can I somehow disable the Optical Drive so it won't continue grinding? I have reboot several times and nothing seems to satisfy/stop this grinding Optical Drive!
    2. I guess I am going to have to buy an external Optical Drive (oh joy, more cash), can anyone tell me about life w/o an internal Optical Drive and using an external optical drive? Any suggestions on which model/features I should look for? ...besides one that uses FireWire, which is a must for me.
    3. I have an external hard drive which I use to backup my Mac Mini. Now that I don't have an internal Optical Drive, are there any other safety issues I should be thinking about? How about booting the Mac Mini from a disk when it crashes without an internal Optical Drive?
I am totally frustrated at this point!
    Cheers, Paul

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
With no disk in the optical drive, it should be almost entirely inactive (it would be expected to make some noise initially at bootup, but should not be active after that). It makes me wonder if the disk was removed correctly, or whether the drive is still 'latched' and thus 'thinks' a disk is in place. In this situation, I'd return the unit to the Apple Store and ask them to resolve the problem, since a failed drive should not create these symptoms.
For external drives, there are a number of good solutions - see http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/ for some examples, starting at around $72. There should be no issue with using an external, and indeed, you are likely to find that even the cheapest of those listed provide you with rather faster performance with rather less fussiness about media brands. You are right to want a FW drive, for best performance.
As long as the external optical is connected and powered, and a valid MacOS install disk inserted, there should be no problems booting to it if required - though you may have to hold the Option key down (Alt if you are using a PC keyboard) to get to the boot loader screen, rather than C to boot directly to the optical drive.

  • DVD Burn fails (Error code 0x80020022), newish drive, just applied updates

    Hello,
when i try to burn a data dvd with a variety of files from finder on my power mac g5 it thinks a while and then fails with the message:
Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed (Error code 0x80020022)
I just downloaded the latest OS updates last night.
Disc utility showed permissions problems in some files on my boot drive including in a darwin folder but they repaired fine.
Two weeks ago apple replaced my superdrive and i hadn't tried burning a dvd since then, but cds did and do burn fine.
This computer is under warrantee but in case the latest software updates caused this, or if someone has an easy fix that would allow me to save the trip to the store for analysis and potential couple day wait...
    i'm all ears!
    Thanks, Will

  • Satellite A300 - Constant "Webcam Driver Open Fail" Error

I have searched and searched for solutions to this problem and feel like I have tried everything. Whenever I turn my laptop on or attempt to start my webcam I get the error "Webcam driver open fail. Please restart camera or computer."
I used to be able to use the webcam with no problems but it just stopped working one day. I've recently reformatted my operating drive to the out-of-the-box state, but it is still showing an error whenever I try to use my webcam. I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium on an A300 Model: PSA-GCA. I have also tried updating the webcam driver (and the latest BIOS update) from Toshiba's support section, but with no luck. I've also tried using the XP webcam driver, but still, no luck.
Any idea on how to fix this problem?

If it doesnt work I think you need help from an authorized service provider. The technicians can check your notebook and repair it ifs necessary.
    Good luck!

  • HT4818 Why can't you create a Windows USB on a computer with an optical drive because my optical drive has failed

I get my USB and my Windows 7.iso but when I open bootcamp the option to create a Windows USB is not clickable. Please help because my Optical Drive doesn't work.

    Hi Rosera,
This is bad and I am sorry to hear that you are running into these issues.
Let me connect with you, so right now, the current state is that you have installed copy of PSE 8 in trial on your windows 7 machine, and when you are trying to enter the serial number from your PSE 8 Box, it is saying the serial number to be invalid?
It might sound pretty obvious, but please make sure that you are entering the serial number correctly and of PSE 8(in case you bought a PEPE box)?
Have you tried the steps mentioned below by Barbara?
If possible, you can send me the serial number through PRIVATE MESSAGE and I can check it on my end that whether the serial number is indeed invalid or that the issue is with your machine?

  • My Matshita Optical drive gives me error messages that burning DVD's is NOT supported ?

I record and burn audio weekly. I dried burning DVD projects and i get the repeated error message the the drive does not support DVD burning.
Same result trying to burn from the Finder or Disk Utility. Anyone have a work around?

Do you get this error message with all current burn attempts, or simply with your most recent project?
If not, a PRAM reset has been known to be helpful.
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Immediately press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.Continue holding the keys down until the computer restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Burning Failed Error 4261

I've been merrily burning a disc here and there and suddenly, today, the burns are failing. I get the error 4261 message. I have read tons of posts, but no one seems to have a definative answer for it. Some have tried slower disc speeds, uninstalling some things and rebooting, but nothing seems to work. Apple? Are you out there? Help please!

    Hey stella9235,
Have you tried to create another playlist with diffrent songs? You can also try restarting the computer and burning with another brand or type of CD/DVD's.
I have two articles that troubleshoot burning issues in iTunes. I would start with: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93286 . This article will walk you through all the basic tips.
The second: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302976 usually only applies if you installed some other CD/DVD burning software on the computer before the issue began.

  • Optical drive burns disks with loud hiss OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670S:

My iMac 24-inch 2.66 ghz is burning some disks that either have a very loud hiss or they have corrupted areas. The drive is a OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5670S. Has anyone else had this problem?

I also face the same problem, running on 10.6.1. Somebody suggested to upgrade the firmware of this drive to 2AHH. But where to get this firmware upgrader? From Apple directly?

  • MacBook optical drive burns DVDs and CDs very slowly

When I burn DVD or CD in Mac OS everything flows normally. DVD 4,7 Gb takes about 15-2o minutes, verifying included. When I try to do the same in the Windows XP platform, it last more than one and half hour. I use Nero burning software. Does anybody has similar troubles or some solutions for my issue.
    Boris

Thank you very much for your answers. Well, you know, I'm from Europe and I'm used to use Windows for several years. My MacBook is my wedding present and It's one beautifull, good and quality "gadget". I saw many good and intuitive solutions in Mac OS, but I simply don't have enough time to learn a new operating system. So, I made a 100Gb big windows partition and everything works just fine, except unnormal lenght of DVD writing. I also suspect that my problem has something to do with the drivers supplied by Apple for the drive, but one of the guys on our forum has MacBook Pro and no problems with writing DVDs in windows. So ... what can I do. Buy an external drive? It's a non sympatic idea at all . Thx anyway, if you maybe know, how could I get appropriates drivers for Windows ... I'd appreciate it a lot.
Sorry, if I make grammar mistakes, my residence is Slovenia, Europe

  • Disc Error 4200 Pops up everytime i try to burn a new cd

This is really frustrating... I recently purchased my new computer for my music collection and everytime i try to burn a CD an error message comes up stating Disc Burn Attempt Failed Error 4200. Im ****** off because i updated iTunes twice and bought $47 dollars worth of music that i would like to transfer to CD's. Another issue i have been having is only 2 songs out of the possible 19 or 20 actually play after the CD is burnt. I have tried CD-R's CD-RW's and different brands from Memorex to Sony and this mess is killing my wallet and my time. Lately i have been having to transfer my files to Windows Media Player and that has been tedious... I need serious help.

I'm in the same issue and haven't been able to find a suitable solution either.

  • Optical drives misfiring

I don't even know where to post this--it's really a hardware issue but it involves multiple computers. I thought it might be a software problem after I searched Discussions and found many references. However the optical drive on my daughter's 2004 Aluminum 15 inch Powerbook has failed; the optical drive on my son's 2006 iMac G5 (Powerpc with built-in iSight camera) has also failed; and now the optical drive on my 2005 iMac G5 is also failing. When I say fail, primarily the drives on my son and daughter's computer won't accept any CD or DVD--they just eject them. Mine is struggling to accept CD's. Today it died in the middle of importing a CD. I had already bought an OWC Neptune external DVD burner which I plugged in today and it imported the CD in about a minute. I had actually bought the DVD burner for my daughter but I don't think I will bother installing a new drive in my iMac either, but rather use an external drive. But what's the deal with 3 optical drives all failing this month on 3 different Macs???

Hey orangekay; I know you weren't trying to imply that we had smoked or dusted our drives into failure. No smokers or construction in our homes. I'm certain that the normal use of the optical drive, day after day, week after week, month on end puts enough dirt in there to gum it up pretty good. I have an HP server that runs my office billing system. We back up every night onto a cassette tape. The tape drive stopped working (it's about 6 years old) so I had a tech guy come out and fix it. He took it apart--it looked like the inside of a vacuum cleaner with so much dirt in there. That's what I picture happens to the optical drive.

  • MacBook Pro Optical Drive Problems

    Hello Forum,
I bought a MacBook Pro on 17July2006 and soon discovered that the optical drive worked only occasionally ( It would only read a CD or DVD when it wanted to, new or old. I would read songs to Itunes on a hit or miss basis. If a CD was read into Itunes, only the first one or two songs would be converted to AAC and subsequently burned before the conversion process would hang. New programs would not be read by the optical drive.) I sent the computer back to an official Apple repair station and I was pleased to see the computer and drive repaired and fully operational in a six day turnaround.
That's the good news. The bad news is the drive crashed again last night after working only six days!!! This is my first Apple computer and so far I am not a happy camper. I've called Apple support and service and they are sending out a second service return repair carton.
Is anyone else experiencing multiple failures like this? I'm wondering if they just cleaned and/or adjusted the drive the first service appointment. I hope they replace the drive if they did not the first time. The other thought is that the optical drive is failing because of thermal issues either local to my machine or the MacBook Pro line in general.
Anyone have any thoughts or experience

I too have experienced these issues, and after having done a little more online research, it appears that many others have as well. My drive works on reading music CD's probably 60% of the time... Which I find to be unacceptable.
However, it hasn't become such a problem that it requires hardware work just yet. Hopefully it's merely a driver or software issue that can be resolved in the new OS.

  • Optical Drive is not recognised in Windows 8.1 (x64), or in UEFI System Diagnostics.

    Description of Issue:
Optical Drive is not recognised in Windows 8.1 (x64), or in UEFI System Diagnostics.
    Steps to Recreate:
    UEFI:
Boot PC into UEFI System Diagnositcs (F2 at POST)
    Component Checks
    Optical Drive
    Sequential Check
    Error: Not Optical Drive Installed.
    Windows 8.1 (x64):
    Run Device Manager
    Error: No DVD/CD Drives section.
Scanning for new hardware changes nothing.
    Relevent System Specifications:
Laptop: HP Pavilion 15-n023sa (Vanilla build)
    Optical Drive: HP DVDRAM gu70n
    Steps Already Taken to Solve:
Replaced DVD drive with one from similar spec HP Pavilion. The gn70n hotswapped perfectly in the other machine. No change on problem laptop. Conclusion: DVD Drive is working, and there are no issues with Windows 8.1 (x64).
Removed DVD Drive. Rebooted computer. Log into Windows. Shutdown. Refit DVD Drive. Boot laptop. This attempts to solve hardware glitches with PnP devices; as well as helping to fix any intermittent loose connection problems. Conclusion: No change.
Ran Troubleshooting for Hardware and Devices, via the Control Panel. Issue Found: Hardware changes might not have been detected. Exploring more options just takes you through to http://social.answers.microsoft.com/search/en-us/?query=hardware+device, this is a 404 error page. Conclusion: Windows Help and Support is severely lacking. They show no more information than just that something has been detected as being wrong.
Ran the Microsoft FixIt Optical Drive Troubleshooter and Automatic Repairer. (http://download.microsoft.com/download/F/5/8/F586FB7C-78E0-40EB-AF41-4C925F803CAF/CDDVDWin8.meta.dia... The troubleshooter reported that the device could not be found. It recommended removing all power cables, switching the device off and various other things that have no relevence to laptop hardware troubleshooting. It then said if the problem still persists, contact the manufacturer. Conclusion: Windows Troubleshooting cannot fix the problem.
Run Windows Update to ensure all updates and definitions have been installed. Conclusion: Windows is fully up to date.
Run a full Rootkit and heuristic Malware scan, using Sbybot S&D 2.3; as well as a signature based scan using Windows Defender. Conclusion: Laptop is clean of rootkits and malware, to the best of my knowledge.
    Notes:
The DVD Drive is NOT showing up in the Device Manager, OR in This PC.
The DVD Drive is NOT being detected by the UEFI System Diagnostics.
There is NO reference to the DVD Drive in BIOS, other than as a boot option, which is generic.
The DVD Drive, itself, DOES work, and has been verified on a different machine.

Oh ok, that's fine. I was expecting to go through a first response resolution process. Once the gate keepers realise they're talking to someone who actually knows what they're talking about, it's usually pretty simple to skip through a lot of the script. Once you've got past the gate keepers once, it's usually easy to get a direct number for the actual resolution department.
Will they question why I've opened up the case to exchange a 1TB HDD for an 80GB HDD? (The only physical spare I have, atm). I know they'll understand, I'm only worried about giving them any reason to deny the warranty on such an extensive fix.

  • Does Old imac support External optical drive

APple says that my imac mid2010 21.5" doesnt support external superdrive
but my iMac's built in optical drive has failed so can other external optical drives function on my mac beacuse there seems to be no way of using a disc in a mac whose internal drive has failed!. . . .

It doesn’t support Apple’s one but does support third-party SuperDrives.
