Optical drive, camera and bluetooth problems with Acer Aspire 7520

Hello everyone
First, my DVD drive just stopped working, it's not being recognized by Arch it seems. This has happened before a few times, but it suddenly started to work. I can open the tray manually, and when I insert a DVD, you can see the led blinking and drive does start to spin, but thats all. I've tried removing and reloading cdrom module with no success. Also, there was a /dev/sr0 before, now it's gone.
Here is the output from dmesg:

Now, the camera issue is a bit different. It worked before with no problems. But now, when I start guvcview, it opens it's main window, and a second window that usually show picture from camera, just appears for a moment and disappears. The led next to my camera turns on, and stays that way. Also, yesterday when I was trying to test the camera, guvcview stuck in a uninteruptible state, so I couldn't kill him in any way. Even after I close guvcview, the camera led is still on, but he is not among active processes. Although in the guvcview output below it says that the device is in use, I don't know how, because I rebooted my laptop and then I tried to run it.
This is what guvcview outputs in console after I start and then close it:

For the bluetooth, I really never managed to get it working. The bluetooth daemons starts with no problems, but hcitool dev shows no devices. I read the wiki, and the only thing I didn't try is the hid2hci tool, I couldn't figure out what to use for devpath argument.
Thanks.

  • Problem with Acer Aspire 5920 CPU swap

    Hi everyone,
I have an Acer Aspire 5920 with Windows 10 x64. I'm going to say right off that I am not experienced in swapping processors, but did what I thought was the right thing. I removed the battery and drained the laptop of power. I took out the old processor (T5450) and put in the "new" processor (T9300) and applied thermal grease and put the heatsink and fan back in place. I put everything else back in place and turned the laptop back on. It ran great for about five minutes, when suddenly I got a blue screen with a "WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR" message. After that, the computer kept trying to restart itself. A few more messages popped up such as "CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED".
Thinking it might be an overheating issue, I turned the laptop off for a little while and turned it back on. From what I understand, this processor should run a little cooler, or at least the same temperatures. The computer booted sucsessfully again and I quickly went to HWiNFO to see the reported temps for the GPU and CPU, both were mid-30's. About ten seconds after running the program, the computer crashed again with the same errors. Could the reported temps be faulty, or is it something different wrong? The BIOS correctly identifies the CPU as T9300.
I'm at a loss here. Thanks for any help offered!

I didn't get the chipset driver, but how can I install it if I can't keep it on long enough to do anything? Do I need to install it with old processor in? I did try reseating it twice, but no luck. Not sure how to tell if it's an ES, but I don't think so. I didn't see ES on the processor itself. I noticed a few notches on the edge of the processor, so it's possible it could be damaged. I have a few pictures to share also. Will have more when camera batteries charge. Ever since I tried to replace the processor, this red light has been on. It's quite bright. Not sure if it has a significant meaning. It was never on before. It remained on when I put the old processor back in. Temps seem to be in normal range. This is with old processor, though. T9300 had similar readings before crash.

  • Resolution problems with Acer aspire 5520

    Hello,
I'm having trouble making both tty and Xorg resolution be native. I have an nVidia 7000M gpu. With nouveau drivers I managed to get KMS working, but realized Xorg resolution is wrong. If I set the right resolution with xrandr the problem with tiling WMs similar to what I explained in this thread. What is different is mouse can go to the blank part and still be visible, floating windows could be placed in the blank area or resized to full screen, but WM won't ever place windows there. Some tiling WMs are able to utilize the full width of the screen. WMs that do not work like this are dwm, wmii and musca.
Dwm has problems displaying conky in its bar (cuts of a lot of output). This made me think the problem is not the resolution/driver and, dwm being my favourite WM, helped hiding the problem.
Wmii utilises the whole screen after change of resolution, but leaves an unmovable vertical line where right edge of a window used to be prior to resolution change.
Musca just works, but could take some getting used to.
    All floating WMs work perfectly.
Then I tried nVidia closed source drivers, which worked perfectly in Xorg. The problem was no KMS. I installed and enabled uvesafb, but it did not change the maximum tty resolution from 1024x768.
    The WMs I tried:
    dwm
    fluxbox
    i3
    musca
    snapwm
    spectrwmsubtle
A lot of others I either did not like, or they required some configuration to even start
What I tried to fix the problem: various xrandr options (with nouveau), various kernel command line options (with nvidia) and what was mentioned in arch wiki about screen xorg configuration. Nothing I did to "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-screen.conf" had any effect so I just deleted the file to ease switching between nouveau and nvidia.
As to which driver I intend to use... I don't care as long as it can display everything correctly.
    P.S.
    /etc/modprobe.d/uvesafb.conf has only one lien
    options uvesafb mode_option=1280x800-32 scroll=ywrap
    cat /sys/bus/platform/drivers/uvesafb/uvesafb.0/vbe_modes
    says top resolution is 1024x768.
    EDIT:
Just now I've tried every tiling WM I could find, and the ones working are echinus, musca and qtile.

Snow Leopard is a Mac OS X version. You say that it's the version you have in your Mac (10.6.8). Do a back up of your files, format the hard drive (using Disk Utility) and reinstall again

  • Macbook pro camera and bluetooth not available

My 2010 macbook pro's camera and bluetooth has stopped working. Both worked fine before and nothing seems to fix the issue. Ive tried holding the power button, resetting pram and smc, and deleting bluetooth file. Everything that Ive read online has not worked. I scheduled an appointment with apple but the drive is far. Any other suggestions?

I noticed that my bluetooth is not available.
Did you check its settings?  System Preferences/Bluetooth
I have tried to do a SMC reset, but to no avail.
Try zapping your pram - Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
Try the suggestions mentioned in EZJim's Website.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 How to Troubleshoot iSight
Read the suggestions mentioned in the my isight camera is not working-not recognized with photo booth or ichat thread.
Another suggestion - 1. Click on Macintosh HD on the top right of your desktop (or whatever else you’ve called your Harddrive)
    2. Click through System > Library > LaunchDaemons
    3. Now look for the file com.apple.cmio.VDCAssistant.plist  - and send it to trash.  http://www.appleware.co.uk/2008/12/03/isight-camera-fix.html
If you are still under warranty or have Apple Care, call them and get a case number.  Otherwise, take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.  You may have a hardware problem if none of the above suggestions resolves your issue.

  • JVC Hard Drive Camera and FCP

Is there anyone out there using a JVC Hard Drive Camera and FCP. Would like to hear what you have to say about file types, conversion, etc. Was hoping for a quicker download, but converting is taking about as much time as download tape. Any suggestions?

I "might" be able to help.
I, too have a JVC hard drive camera. Not the same model as you, and not HD, but still the same idea. One big difference between our cameras is that your camera creates a "TOD" file, and mine creates an "MOD" file. The difference between the two may void my advice, but I doubt it.
I had similar problems converting to a file useable by FCP. I finally called JVC, and they told me to get "Capty MPEG Edit EX". I dropped the fifty bucks and it works great. A little slow, but it works. I still think it's better than capturing tape.
I HAVE learned though that buying a hard drive camera was somewhat of a mistake. By compressing the video to be saved on the drive, we've already lost something. My needs don't require super high quality 3 CCD video, so it really doesn't matter that much for me. I don't know about your needs.
Secondly, I've downloaded a free program called MPEG Streamclip. It works great. It's a little quicker than Capty and it was free. Also, I took one of my MOD files and changed it to TOD, and it opened just fine. Also, when exporting with MPEG Streamclip, if you choose "Export To Quicktime", use the default "Apple Motion JPEG A" setting and choose "unscaled" for your video and 100% quality on your sound, there is no need to render in FCP. BIG time saver for me. Now, somebody that knows way more about this than I do could probably flame me and say I'm "converting crap to crappier" or something, but it looks pretty good to me, and it works for what I'm doing.

  • I have an iMac OS X 10.6.8 and have problems with the backup Disk for Time Machine disconnecting itself with the message that I ejected it improperly.. It ejected itself - why?

I have an iMac OS X 10.6.8 and have problems with the backup drive to Time Machine ejecting itself and so does not automatically backup the way it is meant to do. It is connected with an USB cable to my iMac. What could cause this - malfuntioning drive?

The "iLife" apps are not part of any Mac operating system install and are a separate purchase.
Once you get past 10.6.6 you can purchase and download iPhoto, GarageBand and iMovie. iWeb and iDVD have been discontinued.
Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and higher include the App Store application which is what you use to purchase Lion.

At my house it simply does not work because I live in a rural area where my cell signal drops out continuously, only for a moment but that’s all it takes for the Treo loose the Bluetooth connection.
I’ve searched here on this board for a solution only to find out that I’m not the only one with this problem. I’ve searched the Internet and could not believe the endless complaints about this problem, not a single fix was to be found. I will be going to every single site I can find on the Internet where I can leave a review of this product and I would encourage others with the same problem to do the same.

The "Mobile Device" you see only shows what is on your Treo when ActiveSync is running and connected.  When it's not connected, there is "nothing".  This is good when you want to copy a file you have saved in RAM (main memory).  Connect your Treo and have Activesync run (successfully, of course).  Then, you will see all the accessible files on your Treo.
Please read the previous reply (I have added and edited it to respond to some of your questions).  Also, since I have the Card Export 3.14 for the WM5 and 6 running and it works on my Treo 750, I believe it should also work for you.  I have WM 6.  Earlier versions of Card Export actually "broke" Activesync for me.  It wasn't until very recently that I wanted to try it again, in hopes that they have fixed the bugs.  Apparently they have and I now use it to "fix" Activesync when it doesn't want to connect.
So, the latest version is 3.14 and it supports WM 5 and 6 (although they incorrectly named it Windows Mobile 2005/2006).

  • Mail and iPhoto Problems with sending photos.

Mail and iPhoto Problems with sending photos.
I have this problem that started a while ago and seems to be getting worse.
    Here are the different scenarios.
-If I try to share a photo to email within iPhoto, it will insert the image file name in the mail message, but no image icon or opened image. In iPhoto Preferences under General I have chosen to use Email Photos using Mail.
-If I choose to use iPhoto to send the photo, it will compose the message and the photo is viewable. If I send the message i can view the photo within the email I sent to myself. Nothing happens when I double click on the photo in the Mail message. Nothing happens when i control click on the photo in the mail message. Nothing happens when I try to drag the photo to the desktop from the mail message. When I try to save attachments from the email and choose a place to save it, the save button is grayed out and it cannot be saved. When I check the mail message it says there is an attachemnt but there is no file size listed.
-If I use the stationary within Mail app I cannot drag a photo into the placeholder, I get a circle with a line through it symbol when I try. It happens if I try to drag a photo from the desktop or from the media browser within Mail app.
-If I drag the photo to the desktop from iPhoto, I can double click it on the desktop and it will open in Preview.
-If I then control click on the same photo on the desktop and scroll to share/email, the generic photo icon will be inserted in the mail message. If i double click the photo icon in the mail message  I get a message it can't be opened because it is empty.
-If I drag that same image to the mail message body the same thing happens.
-If I send that email to someone they cannot open the image file.
    What I can do:
    - I can drag that same image file on the desktop to my dropbox folder and  it will upload. From there I can go on my iPad and download the photo and send it through email just fine.
-I can open the same image file on my desktop in Preview, I can copy and paste it into a mail message and the image will be viewable in the mail message by me and by the recipient.
-I can drag that same image on the desktop to my safari browser window and it will be viewable in the page. i can then copy and paste that image into a mail message and it is viewable in the message.  I can then send that email message to myself and i can control click on the image and get all my options. It also shows as an attachment with the size of the image file in the mail message.
I can send that message to someone and they can see the photo and open it fine.
-If I send that same email to me I can see the photo within the mail.  If I then drag that photo to the desktop I cannot use it again to put in an email as the same problem happens again.
I have tried all scenarios in my user account, another users account and in a guest account. The same happens in all. I am guessing because of this it is not a corrupt preference file, unless all of the preference files are corrupt. The guest user account I added a new email account so it was brand new and still had the problem.
I am stumped, all and any help is appreciated.

Another problem that may be related….
I have Snapz Pro. I used to be able to save the snaps to my desktop or a folder. Now when I take a screenshot and try to save the file to my desktop or a folder on my desktop I get this message  "Files cannot be created in the selected location. You do not have permission to write to the selected location.   Please choose a different location."  I have found that i can only save the file to the clipboard.   I have repaired permissions many times and still I have this problem.

You can check you Adobe account online to see if the serial number is registered under your account.  If not then your only option will likely be to contact Adobe Support directly thru chat to see if they can provide you with a/the serial number. For them to do so will require you being able to prove ownership.

If it's happening on all the apps that you've downloaded from the App Store, but not the Apple built-in ones, then try downloading any free app from the store (as that appears to reset something) and then re-try them - the free app can then be deleted.
If it's happening on all apps then try closing them all completely and then see if they work when you re-open them : from the home screen (i.e.not with any app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of each app to close them, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

Sorry, that didn't work.  I get no drop down menu from the Hot Sync Manager for the Serial Port.  What comes up often is:  "The selected port, COM1, is not available at this time.  Hot Sync Manager will open the port when it becomes available."
Could it be the Norton Antivirus Firewall that is preventing the Hot Sync Manager to open the Serial Port?  Just a thought.  Thanks for your help.
