Optical Drive does read CDs

To Forum
My optical drive wont read 99% of CDs. Had it checked at the Apple store and no problems.
The same CDs that fail on my MBP work in all other computers, drives, CD Drives.
The drive will also play all DVDs
Why doesnt it like CDs? I've tried the usual cleaning of CD. Any other thoughts?

Neville,
If you look around this forum you will see a dozen or more others all having the same problem, all starting around mid May.
My tale of woe: MBP 17" late 2008, OSX 10.5.8, Matsushita UJ-875 with DA09 firmware. Will not accept ANY CD media. Accepts and plays DVDs fine. CDs are ejected after several seconds. Rejected CDs work perfectly in other players/readers etc. Have used DVD/CD cleaning disc - repeatedly - with no effect.
Any help from you or anyone else appreciated.

  • MBP Optical Drive not reading cds or dvds + LaunchDaemons not in Library

    Late 2008 MBP, 4gb, ram 2.66ghz, Mountain Lion 10.8.4
Hey this is my first time using this forum but I'm not computer illiterate so please don't waste my time!
My optical (disk) drive in my Late 2008 MBP is not reading dvds or cds.
I repaired disk permissions to no avail.
I had read another thread on this issue saying I could opene my library to see if i could find and delete  com.WD.WDDDriveServices.plist. which I had seen had worked for others who had had a 1tb WD external drive and had had their disk drives stop working because of this. However, when I went into my library the LaunchDaemons folder which was supposed to contain this erroneous file LaunchDaemons was not even there! Is LaunchDaemons called something else on Mountain Lion or what? I went through all my plist files and could not locate com.WD.WDDDriveServices.plist. anywhere! It is my hope that if i can find and delete this file that I may be able to reboot and have a working disk drive again!
    (note)
I could play DVDs but not CDs up until I upgraded to mountain lion 10.8.4, but after the mountian lion upgrade now even DVDs won't work.
Can anybody help me resolve this issue with the Missing LaunchDaemons folder, or have another suggestion beyond repairing disk permissions or deleting com.WD.WDDDriveServices.plist.  to make my optical drive work
I am hoping can resolve the main issue at hand which is my optical drive, but also any help on locating LaunchDaemons would be appreciated.
(I know there has been a few threads on this topic, believe me I've practically read them all, for most repairing disk permissions worked, for others who had a wd 1tb external hard drive (like me) deleting com.WD.WDDDriveServices.plist. worked, but that isn't an option at this moment since i cant even find LaunchDaemons in my Library lol.
    PS.
Please don't be a smartass and say get a new optical drive, I know my MBP is old but I think the problem is not really with the hardware but rather with this absent LaunchDaemons folder.
    Thanks in advance.

Likely not. Your next step is a call to AppleCare or a visit to a repair center.

Well, I bought a CD/DVD cleaner kit, and nothing happened--it didn't even recognize that the cleaner disc was in there and it didn't do anything.
I checked for an optical drive update, but the only one I found was for older Macs for 4X DVDs, which had nothing to do with CDs. Since even music discs won't mount, nor will discs that mount on every other Mac in the house, Macs both older and newer than my G5 and discs both older and newer, I suspect my drive is toast. Dang.

  • Optical drive does not record properly - does not mount discs

My mac pro dual core xeon has two optiarc ad7170a drives that worked perfectly until I updated to system 10.6.2. Now they don't always mount cd and dvd discs and fail to record properly. Does anyone know of firmware updates for these drives.

    Multiple posting continued -
I have a Mac Pro Core quad Xenon with two optical drives that came installed with Snow Leopard and I have never been able to burn DL DVDs. I have a 50% success rate with single layer DVDs and this system burns bargain basement CDs Ok. The information now indicates that Apple may have problems with defective software and defective hardware. I have scheduled to take my computer to the Genius group next Saturday 15, 2010. I will keep this group posted.

  • Installed SSD and 8GB ram, Now Drive wont read Cds

I have a late 09 15" Macbook Pro.  Today I installed an OWC Mercury Extreme Pro SSD and 8gb of Crucial ram, I also disabled SMS and made it so the drives wouldnt go to sleep.  Everything works REALLY fast and great except for some reason now when I put a CD in, the computer thinks its blank.  Dvds work fine.
Any ideas?  Maybe I bumped the connector on the drive?

I booted off of my old drive just to see if its a SSD issue.  It does the exact same thing booting form the original hard drive.  Also I took the optical drive out and gave it a visual, double checked the connections too.  I also tried to reenable SMS and that didnt make any difference.  It all seems OK, but it still doesnt like CDs.
Seems odd that my drive would stop working at the exact same time that I change to an SSD.

  • A205-S7464 DVD Drive doesnt read cds!

I have a A205-S7464 Laptop. running windows vista home edition sp1. my dvd drive doesnt read any cds! i dont know whats wrong. Driver 6/21/2006 ver. 6.0.6001.18000.

    Hi-
Try downloading and installing the Patchburn Utility. It might help your media reading. I assume this is a disk that someone burned? Could be your drive doesn't like the media, itself, or the burn speed was too high for your 5x DVD=ROM to read.
If Patchburn doesn't help, may be time to move up to a more modern drive to replace your antique.....
There is a real nice,Pioneer DVR-112 replacement you might consider.

  • External Optical drive not reading? Or is it my programs...

    Hi,
I currently just got a macbook pro 2011, 15". Two internal drives (120 GB SSD for OS and Programs, 750 GB HDD for Data) & external USB Optical DVD/RW
The issue I'm having is when I insert a real DVD into the external optical drive (which is the orignal from the macbook pro not store bought) it doesmn't read the DVD. I have installed Quicktime, VLC player and everytime the external just gives me the VIDEO AND AUDIO TS folders.. any suggestions in what I need to do so I can play DVD's from my external?
    Thanks a lot...

DVD Player requires a properly recognized DVD player to be present in the optical bay in order to play DVDs. You can use VLC, but you will have to do as you're doing. Another option is to edit the DVD playback framework, but I'm not going to post those instructions. You can use Google & do so at your own risk.

  • Optical drive does not show in device manager

    Greetings,
My Pavilion DV6700 does not show the optical drive anymore.  I does show as a boot option in BIOS.  I have gone through all the Microsoft "fixes" without sucess.  The drive spins up and the Busy light comes on when I insert a disk, but it doesn't work.
This laptop came with Vista, but has been upgraded to Win 7 32 bit.  The drive did function after the upgrade, but I haven't used it for a long time.
Any suggestions on how to fix this will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Loren

    Hi,
Could be due to the laser beam after a long time sitting idle. I think you need to clean the lenses using something like this (scroll down 1 page)

  • T42 DVD/CDRW Combo drive not reading CDs. System Folder Icon changes. XP Pro SP2.

If I insert a DVD, the System Folder icon changes to 'DVD-ROM' and displays 'Please insert a disk into drive D:'
Am able to burn a CD, but as shown above cannot read. Disabling the drive in device manager, rebooting and re-enabling will make drive read once, rebooting again and it cannot read.
Using RegEdit to remove LowerLimit and UpperLimit does not help.
Have updated drive to latest firmware and run (to no avail) Microsoft AutoRun fix.
Drive works flawlessly  under Ubuntu 8.04.1, seems to be an XPP registry issue, but where?
Lost at this point, would appreciate any pointers...

I am having the exact same issue with a brand new T400.  When I insert a CD or DVD into the drive, no spin up occurs.  When I double click on the DVD-ROM/CD drive in My Computer, Windows tells me to insert a disc.
I've disabled the Automatic Power Savings for the optical drive.  I've also installed the latest firmware and made the regedit changes suggested by Microsoft (UpperFilter/LowerFilter).
I can't determine whether this is a software bug or hardware failure.  Does anyone have any insight?

  • MacBook Optical Drive Does Not Show in Disk Utility

    Hi Everybody,
So I put a CD in my CD/DVD drive on my white 2009 Macbook and it made a funny sound. The CD did not register with the system. And when I open Disk Utility, it doesn't recognize the optical drive at all.
Is there anything I can do?
    Many thanks!

Can you or did you eject the cd? Then check apple (upper left corner) about this mac/ more / serial- ata in left panel. Does it show there. Recheck disk utilities and see if it is now there. No? Restart holding down command/option/p/r/ for three chimes. Try another cd. Same? shut down and do SMC reset.  Remove battery if you can and power cord hold down start button for 10 seconds. If battery is not removable hold down command/option/shift while pressing down the start button for 10 seconds.  Restart and retry. If still no drive showing, the optical drive is most likely bad.

  • Optical drive does not work completely.

My optical drive stopped working today. It is not regonized by the system and does not show up in the ATA Bus in System Profiler.
I resetted the PRAM and PMU, then checked and the drive was still not found. I then put my computer to sleep and when I woke it up, the drive was there in the ATA Bus list but information was missing. Now it is not there at all.
There is a disc stuck in the drive. It will not eject. If I restart the computer holding the trackpad button down (to force eject the disc), the system stays on a completely gray screen and never finishes booting.
The disc was having problems being read on another computer, which is why I put it in the drive. I'm not sure why this has happened, but if anyone has any ideas or tips that they can give me, i'd be more than willing to listen to them.
Also, I have an eDrive that I made with TechTool Pro, and when I boot up in that the drive is not recognized either. This makes me think that there is a bad connection or a hardware problem. But how is that possible in a Powerbook?
I do not want to call Apple because I bought my Powerbook two years ago and do not have anymore warranty time left. I can open the machine and look at the drive, but I am guessing that I will not see anything special and it will look normal. I really don't feel like buying another drive, they shouldn't break after two years.
Maybe there is dirt in it or something?
When I open Toast, it freezes and never opens. I have to restart my computer to get Toast to close.
I burned a DVD last night.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not sure if I'm threadjacking here, which probably means I am, but that is not my intent.
I have seen scattered posts related to this problem and have this problem myself with my 2 1/2 yr old Al PB. Intermittently, the optical drive is not recognized by the system, sometimes with a disc in the drive, sometimes without. System profiler will sometimes list it on the ATA bus, sometimes not. At times it is noted by System Profiler as on the ATA bus, but if I select "disc burning", System profiler either grinds away and never finds anything or says there is no supported device. At one point it froze while playing a DVD and did not recognize the presence of a disc or the drive. A reset of one form or another always corrects the problem (often only after multiple attempts), but this happens several times a week and I shouldn't need to reset PRAM or PMU that often in my opinion. Sometimes just a restart does the trick, but it's all a bit of a pain. No other issues to speak of. Any thoughts? Thanks.

  • Optical drive does t recognize disk

I have a 2009 MBP running Lion 10.7 .  The optical drive recognizes some disks CD and DVD but always shows that they are blank .

    Hi Roger,
You could purchase a CD/DVD drive cleaning kit, or you can try with materials you may already have on hand. Use a credit card, or something similar, and wrap it with an LCD cleaning cloth type product (basically a thin micro-fiber type cloth). Gently slide the "cleaner" in and out a few times in the left side of the optical drive opening. Make sure you can hold onto the cloth so it doesn't get stuck inside the drive. This cleans the lens, which may be all you need.
The drives Apple uses are notoriously picky about which brand of disc they'll read/write, so try some different brands and see if they work.

  • Satellite P20 - Optical Drive doesnt read the disk properly

Well until the other day the CD-RW/DVD Drive in my Toshiba P20 laptop was working fine. Now however it isnt. Whenever I insert a disk into the drive the mouse turns into a spinning CD to show that it is reading the disk, however it finds no content on whatever disk I insert and it also says there is no disk inserted.
    What should I do?
    Regards
    Martyn

    Hi Martyn,
Your optical drive is covered by your notebook warranty as long as you do not change or remove it from the notebook.
The exact terms of your warranty may vary depending on which country you live in and any 'Sale of Goods' legislation that may be in force.
Typically the standard Toshiba warranty is a 'Return to Base' agreement under which you are responsible for getting the unit to a Service Agent, and also collecting it when it is repaired. However, you may find that the original supplier (the place from where you purchased it) may also be able to arrange the repair for you).
If you contact the Service Agent they will usually arrange for your notebook to be collected from you, but you will probably be charged for this.
    Best of luck

  • Optical drive does not appear to be powered

    Hey folks,
I'm running an Intel-based iMac (first generation) and am having trouble with my optical drive. I first noticed the issue because I couldn't insert a CD. I then went into System Profiler and the "Disc Burning" section has this to say:
"No burning device was found. If you are using an external device please make sure that it is connected and powered properly."
Since I'm using an iMac, though, I can't just crack her open and check the connections. I also noticed that it took longer than usual (by a few minutes) to boot up this morning. Is that related?
This is an office computer (and my primary machine here) so I'd prefer not to have to take it in for service. Is there any other test I can perform or way I can try and restore power to the drive? Or do I have to take this in for service?
    Thanks a lot, folks.

Indeed, System Profiler will tell you if the machine is recognizing the drive at all. It could well be that there is no power to the drive or that it has a mechanical malfunction. You could run the Hardware Test on the install disks that came with the iMac but it wouldn't get you very much further.
This is almost certainly going to need taking to an Apple Store or AASP but shouldn't take more than a couple of days to sort out, even if they have to order parts (assuming of course that they are in stock).
