OPTICAL DRIVE FIXED but what is this part???

PCB, MLB, 2.0GHZ DC, SMS/KIONI - Does any one know what this part is???
I sent mine in after 3 bad MASHITA drives (only reading about 2/3 of my discs that played well on every other machine they were loaded into)
I sent it friday the 15th and it was delivered back to my doorstep tuesday the 19th. ONLY 4 DAYS !!!!
This time it finally seems to be working. They replaced it again with the mashitaDVD-R UJ-857, and also they replaced the part identified as " PCB, MLB, 2.0GHZ DC, SMS/KIONI.
I was able to download 10 out of ten of the discs that frooze up the computer with the previous MASHITA drive

    two things to try: either click the green "zoom" bottom at the topLeft of the window in the title bar, or go to your System Prefs and then Displays, and increase the resolution that is used

  • Optical drives reads but wont write after swap

    hello everyone, I bought an iMac G3 450MHz that had had a 'superdrive' fitted. It both read and wrote CD's and DVDs. I tested it out and it worked just fine, I even made a back up copy of my Tiger DVD with it. I wanted to put the optical drive into my beloved Flower Power 600 iMac CD-RW so ,to make sure all the drive cables etc weren't disturbed, I just removed the whole caddy with the HDD plus the optical drive plus all the connecting cables, and popped it into my Flower Power. It booted up fine so I loaded (via carbon copy cloner) the contents of my original HDD. Now, when I look in system profiler, the optical drive shows up as a read/write but will only read discs. If I put in a blank disc the iMac's OS doesn't see the blank disc. Funnily enough my copy of Toast does see it and Toast launches itself. As I want to be able to burn disc images using Disk Utility this is a bit of a problem for me. I might just add, as it may be of some interest, that whoever fitted the superdrive had the HDD jumpers set to Slave but this was how it was when it worked perfectly in the 450MHz it came in so this was how I left them. The other little problem is the iMac won't sleep but I can live with that.

    The reason your hard drive is set to slave is because it shares the IDE bus with the optical drive. With the stock optical drive, the optical drive is set to slave and the hard drive is set to master. However, that superdrive is probably hardwired to master, so the hard drive needs to be slave. As long as one drive is slave and the other drive is master, it should work fine.
    Are you using the exact same system installation from the 450 on the 600? If not, there was probably some special driver installed to enable the all the superdrive features. Toast is a third-party app that is designed to work with many different optical drives, so such a driver would be built into the software, which would explain why it works (and Disk Utility does not).
    What company sold (and installed) this superdrive?

  • Combo / Optical Drive detected but not reading CD & DVD

    Hi everyone,
    Firstly, I apologize if this topic has been covered but I've searched up and down and couldn't find it.
    I'm running the following computer:
    G4 MDD Dual 1.42Ghz, 1Gb RAM, OS 10.4
    My computer has been dormant for about a month now and last night I fired it up with the following problem: _Grey screen with spinning 'loading' icon and it wouldn't get into the desktop_
    I managed to successfully boot to the desktop after I did a combination of the following:
    1. Reboot in Safe Mode (Shift)
    2. Reset NVRAM (Opt + Cmd + O + F)
    3. Reset PRAM (Opt + Cmd + P + R)
    4. Removed all 3rd party cables
    I haven't used the Combo/Optical Drive for about a month now and I decided that maybe I should re-install Tiger. When I inserted the Installer CD, the Combo Drive (1st slot) just ignored it. Initially, Superdrive (2nd slot) also ignores all discs I inserted. After countless restarts, I managed to get the Superdrive to read the G4 Hardware Test CD.
    I've done the following:
    1. Finder preference is set to not ignore inserted media
    2. Tinkered with the Optical drive by unplugging and plugging it back
    3. Everything else I could find on the internet regarding troubleshooting it
    4. Made sure that the cables are connected properly inside the computer
    5. Ran the Apple Hardware Test CD and everything is OK.
    6. Checked with the System Profiler and it detects both Optical Drives (1st slot = Combo Drive, 2nd slot = Superdrive).
    Now the problem is:
    1. Combo Drive does not read any inserted disc (CD & DVD)
    2. Superdrive reads but spits them out soon after
    3. I can't re-install Tiger
    Any advice / suggestions is very much appreciated.

    Hi David,
    My computer has been dormant for about a month
    Have you checked the PRAM Battery, they can cause strange things & last 4+5 years...
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/BAA36VPRAM/
    Combo Drive does not read any inserted disc (CD & DVD)
    Opticals do go out, but 2 at once doesn't seem likely. What happens if you open Disk Utility then insert a Disc?
    Have you tried a Cleaner CD in them?

  • R40e and R50e optical drive fixed?

    Hello everyone,
    I am planning to buy a used Thinkpad, either an R40e or an R50e. The R40e comes with a DVD-ROM drive and the R50e with a CD-ROM drive. I am leaning towards the R50e, since it is better in every aspect except that it cannot play DVDs. I thought I could replace the CD-ROM drive later with a combo drive or something, but then I looked around a bit on the web and got a bit confused.
    I read that "Some options are not supported with the ThinkPad R50e systems because the Ultrabay drive is fixed." I also read the same thing about the R40e, though not on the Lenovo website. At the same time, I saw Lenovo had some videos on how to remove and install the optical drives in the R40e and the R50e.
    So is it replaceable or not? Did I misunderstand something? The Ultrabay drive is not the same as the CD/DVD drive?
    If someone could explain this to me, I would be grateful.
    Cheers,
    Laszlo

    Hi Laszlo,
    Yes, it's just a matter of removing the keyboard first to replace the optical drive in "e" models such as R40e, R50e/R51e. Here are some helpful links for you and others who may be reading:

  • Digital Rights Management in new Audigy2 driver pack. What does this do or not

    I'm going to admit my lack of legal expertise in these matters, but how does this affect folks? What areas will this limit us when we upgrade our drivers?

    Well, I have a laserdisc project on the back burner, where I was going to capture the AC3 stream through the optical input. I take it, that this will affect me?
    If that's the case then a few questions:
    ) For the new driver pack, is this a compnent that I have an option not to install?
    2) SHould I use the prior driver pack?
    3) In an earlier thread one solution was to install the older driver pack first and the newer driver pack second. Can a modification of this solution work, picking out the components I want?
    4) Which file will prevent me from doing my project? Is it necessary if I were to remove it from the extracted files of the new driver pack

  • EMac optical drive: Reads but ceased writing.  I get "Sense key=MEDIUM ERROR, Sense Code=0x0C, WRITE ERROR.  Drive is Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-127D.

    eMac optical drive: reads fine but has ceased writing.  One day it's working fine, burning DVDs, then after repeated attempts stops copying and gives the following error message:  "Sense key=MEDIUM ERROR, Sense Code=0x0C, WRITE ERROR".  Drive is Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-127D.  Is this a software issue or is the drive half dead?  Get the same result with either Popcorn or Toast 10.

    Are you using Roxio Toast? That error seems to be discussed a lot in the Roxio forums. Scroll down this thread:

  • My optical drive went out. what external dvd drive will work?

    My optical drive is going out.  I went to Apple and they suggested I buy an external dvd drive instead of paying $150+ to replace the drive on my MacBook Pro. I bought the Samsung Ultra Portable Slim External DVD drive and it took about 15+minutes for my Mac to even acknowledge it. Then it read the dvd and then my Mac told me it was consuming too much power through the USB and disconnected it. And I could not get it to work after that.  I called Apple Support to find out what drives will work and they told me their USB Superdrive.  I told them I read it won't work with Mac's that already have an optical drive installed, they looked it up and told me I'm correct.  When I asked them what other drives they suggest, they told me they had no idea and I should google it.
    Super frustrated.

    Virtually ant external drive should work with your MBP.  I would suggest one with external power so that you do not run into the same problem.
    You might try a USB 'Y' connector with the one that you have purchased.  That may allow sufficient power for it to operate.  This is an example:

  • Did my hard drive crash? What is this screen?

    I was out of town for a couple days and came home to an a screen I'd never seen before. When I turned on my MBP, a gray screen booted up with 2 folders - one said "Hard Drive HD" and the other said "Recovery 10.8.2".
    Not knowing what was going on, I chose "Hard Drive HD" and selected the corresponding internet network and password. My computer actually booted up as normal after that but what in the world was going on? Since I've got Time Capsule, was the information restored from there??

    If you start your MBP with the OPTION key pressed down, it will generate a display that shows your MBP HDD and the Recovery Partition.  Selecting the HDD icon will boot your MBP as you normally would and selecting the Recovery Partition would generate the recovery menu.
    This will give further details:

  • Nice updates/fixes but what about the reception issue?

    Don't want to beat a proverbial dead horse, but what about making the IPhone 4 a better receiver of calls? My 3Gs was the BEST phone I ever owned. I rarely had a dropped call, I was able to make and receive calls in places where no phone I had owned previously could. When I read that this phone had the best reception of any IPhone (according to Apple) I went and made the switch. Yes, I read many posts where folks say just that, great phone. I am on IPhone 4 number three and all have been plagued with reception issues, thought the first two were worse than this one. I go to the same locations every day and the 3Gs sent and received calls remarkably better. Just sayin.....

    n2speed125 wrote:
    What ps issue? I have none!! The reception issue is real and I lose signal in places where my 3GS would not.. I can hold my 3gs any way I like and still use the internet.. While using my iPhone 4 in the same place, all I get is the spinning wheel of death and it does not connect.. I've had the bumper on it since I got it and while it may help a little, it does NOT make the issue disappear..
    Just because an issue doesn't effect YOUR phone, doesn't mean it's not an issue for others..
    if you are not using a case then you are just ... idk... slow or something.
    because apple put the antenna on the outside of the phone it is easier to attenuate the signal but it also gives much better reception. i have not dropped one call on my iphone 4... i was dropping tons of calls on my 3Gs and i am in the same area.
    i have tried to attenuate the signal on my phone and cannot with the case on no matter how i hold it. if i take the case off and hold the sweet spot it drops like crazy. maybe your bumper isn't covering the antenna well enough.
    i got the incipio NGP for 19 bucks at walmart. if you put that case on and still have the issue then i think you are totally full of cr@p.

  • Crash on saving file with fix but what was the cause?

    I recently encountered a problem that cost me several hours. I'm posting my story in case someone else encounters it and also in the hope that someone might have an insight into the cause.
    For no apparent reason, Frame began crashing on attempting to save a particular chapter file in a book. The file has several anchored frames (floating, anchored at top of column) and a cross reference to each. All of the anchored frames, their contents, and cross references had been in the file for many months with no problem.
    Various experiments isolated the problem to one of the anchored frames. Deleting the frame stopped the crashes but wasn't much of a fix because I needed the frame. Eventually I found that moving the anchor/link for the frame to a different paragraph eliminated the crashes.
    I'm using Frame 7.2p158 on Windows XP SP3. For what it's worth, exporting to MIF and back to Frame didn't help, nor did deleting and recreating the anchored frame in the same location.
    Jan Axelson

    Great sleuthing to narrow it down to a specific anchored frame! A few questions:
    What kind of content was in the anchored frames? was it for example a graphic copied into the frame, were there OLE (linked) objects, or was it a referenced graphic file, or ?? What setting do you have for File > Preferences "Save FrameImage with Imported Graphics"?
    Also, how much RAM do you have on your system? Do you often have other apps open when you work in FM, e.g. MS Office apps, or Photoshop or whatever?
    Years ago I recall having a problem with anchored frames seeming to cause crashes, it was as if FM was reaching some internal limit and at some point it just went "kablooie". I'm pretty certain that getting more RAM was the definitive solution in my case.

  • I'm embarrassed to even ask this, but: what does 'this' refer to?

    I am losing the plot trying to Google 'this'; it just isn't working. BUT I did find a description by looking at the ActionScript 3.0 documentation index. http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/statements.html#this
    Here it is:
    "A reference to a method's containing object. When a script executes, the this keyword references the object that contains the script. Inside a method body, the this keyword references the class instance that contains the called method."
    Soooo, to access a property or method from a method within the same class, you would type this: this.method() or this.property, right? I'm pretty sure it works without 'this.', but it's confusing me because I learnt PHP before ActionScript, and you always require 'this ->' in this circumstance.
    Also, what the aubergine does 'this' refer to when used from the main timeline (not within a class)?
    Post script:
    Sorry about using the word 'this' so much……… this.

    1. I think Ned's explanation linking this keyword to timeline is limiting because timline can be an attribute of MovieClip instance only whereas this keyword refers to ANY AS3 object's instance scope. Main clue is the word INSTANCE. So, this keyword has much wider meaning and usage.
    2. Although this is true that one of the conveniences of this is to use it as an associative array, I wouldn't say it is the main usage. In my opinion, in well designed OOP applications the is not need for associative array syntax because there are many more efficient approaches to reference to properties.
    "I won't be needing to use the 'this' statement to access other methods and properties from within the same class."
    You should reconsider.
    Here are examples when this is very useful:
    A. Methods parameters vs instance properties/methods naming conventions.
    In this example method's parameter and instance property have the same name but there is no confusion:
    private var width:Number;
    public function changeWidth(width:Number):void {
        this.width = width;
    B. Names of instance property and method's variable are the same. Again, references are clear:
    private var myVariable:String;
    private function doSomething():void {
        var myVariable:String = "BLAH";
        this.myVariable = "ANOTHER BLAH";
    Also, although AS3 doesn't support overloading, one can call methods scoping them to either this or super.
    override protected function myFunction():void {
    private function callMyFunction():void {
        this.myFunction();
        super.myFunction();
    In addition, when static vs instance propertied/methods are used - one cannot scope static ones to this which sometimes is useful as well.
