Optical Drive keeps rejecting CD/DVD? Help :(

hello all,
I've had my Macbook for about a year now and the optical drive always worked fine up until a few months ago.
Everytime I insert a CD or DVD for that matter it makes a wierd repeative beeping noise then makes a wierd click when it rejects it.
Just curious if anyone knows whats up? or how much it might cost to have it go checked out/fixed...
I'm safely assuming that something might of got lodged inside accidently from carrying it in my backpack.
but, suggestions/ thoughts will be helpful!

You can take it to your nearest Apple Store for a diagnosis and estimate or you can replace it yourself using the repair guides at www.ifixit.com

  • IMac optical drive keeps rejecting discs! Help?

I know after browsing the depths of Google for solutions that this appears to be a common problem, but I figured I would ask the question once more anyway as I didn't really find exactly what I was looking for in other forum posts.
My iMac is now three years old (a late 2009 model) with Intel Core 2 Duo, 3.33GHz processor, currently running Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8. I have never previously experienced any problems with the optical drive reading disks, but I have been attempting to re-install Adobe CS4 on a few occasions now and each time I insert an installation disk, it whirs horribly for around 10 seconds before ejecting and doing absolutely nothing.
I have tried using a generic disk cleaner multiple times, but it doesn't appear to do anything at all.
Does anyone know why this would keep happening, and really what I should do next?!
I'm still covered by my AppleCare plan until 16/11/2012 so I literally have just over a week's worth of cover remaining. Is it worth me just taking the bloody thing into an Apple store and seeing what they can do?
    -LJ

Do other disks show the same issue? If it's just the CS4 installer, the problem is with that disk. Be sure to use the same type of disk (DVD presumably) for your test.
If so, yes, a trip to an Apple store or service provider is in order. Be sure to make a reservation before you go or you may spend a long time waiting to speak to a Mac genius.
    Best of luck.

my cd/dvd drive keeps rejecting all cd/dvd.  it accepts it for about 5 seconds and then spits it out.  does anyone have any suggestions?

Silly question, have you tried a lens cleaner?

  • Using osx snow leopard with boot camp, optical drive keeps ejecting windows 7 disc

Upgraded my late 2008 macbook pro from leopard to snow leopard.  Added the max 4GB of RAM and replaced the working 250GB hard drive with a new 1TB hard drive.  Rebooted with time machine from external hard drive.  Now tried setting up Bootcamp to add a Windows 7 partition, but the optical drive keeps ejecting the Windows 7 disc after it spins for a few moments.  The optical drive will read other discs, just not the Windows 7 disc.  How do I fix this problem?

you need to install the new bootcamp drivers from windows. boot into windows, insert the snow leopard DVD, open it and follow the instructions.

  • Optical Drive keeps checking for a disk every 5mins

MBP 15" - My optical drive keeps spinning up as if is checking for or reading a disk. There is not one in there. It doesn't seem to be causing any problems, it's just annoying.

I was going to begin my own thread about this but I'm glad you've begun one already.
I'm having the same issue as you are and it's quite annoying. It's not only annoying but it makes me worry about the longevity of the motor in the optical drive.
A bit of history -- after my LCD backlight died on my original 2.0GHz MacBook Pro and after 3 repair attempts (all gloriously FAILED) by the Apple Store on Regent Street here in London (flagship store my eye!) it was decided that rather than attempt more repairs Apple would replace the machine. As Apple would only guarantee they'd meet the specs of my previous machine I was given a stock 2.4GHz unibody MBP. I received that machine 4 days ago, Thursday of last week. Out of the box it was exhibiting the phantom disc issues you describe, roughly every 5 minutes. The only time it wasn't making the noise was when I had a disc in the drive.
Assuming it to be a defective optical drive I booked a Genius appointment and the earliest I could get was earlier today. I took the old machine in and between the issue I described with the new machine and the recent repair debacle they decided to swap the new computer for another new one on the spot (which was good as I would have asked for that to happen had they not brought it up). For interest's sake, that first unibody machine also had 2 dead pixels.
Fast forward to when I get back to the flat and unpack the second replacement unit today only to find that after I restore from my Time Machine backup the optical drive is doing the SAME THING again. The new unit also has 3 dead pixels. I will be taking this machine straight back to Apple tomorrow to ask *** is going on and get some satisfaction.
One thing I did find, after some investigation, is that when the optical drive does its phantom ejection, there's a process started. If you watch Activity Monitor (sort by process ID, newest first) you'll see DiskManagementTool kick in when the noise is made. That's a component of Disk Utility however thus far I've not discovered what triggers it or why; however, I wonder if it's anything to do with some component that was on my original MBP that was archived via Time Machine migrated to the new unit. Because I've neither done a clean OS reinstall nor waited past the migration assistant to restore my data, I'm not sure if the drive makes the noise when my backup's not in use but I have this nasty feeling it wouldn't.
Anyone else having this issue, please launch Activity Monitor and keep an eye on it to see if the same process kicks in when the optical drive makes its noise. I suspect others will see that happen, meaning that's the first step in figuring out a solution. It really seems like it's a software issue so it should be fixable.

  • Optical drive keeps ejecting disc-mac book pro any help?

Disc keeps ejecting out, any solutions? mac book pro

The drive accepts discs but they do not mount or are automatically ejected
Check the disc's surface for scratches and dirt, since these things can prevent the disc from appearing on the desktop.
The MacBook Air SuperDrive is designed to be used with MacBook Air and Mac mini computers that do not have a built-in optical drive. For best results, connect the MacBook Air SuperDrive directly to the computer's USB port instead a USB hub.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
Ensure your drive can read the specific type of disc being used. The System Profiler or System Information may provide additional information regarding what media your computer supports.
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or earlier: Open Apple System Profiler by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click More Info.
OS X 10.7 Lion or later: Open System Information by choosing "About this Mac" from the Apple () menu. Then, click System Report.
If the disc continues to not be recognized, contact Apple, an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store for additional troubleshooting, evaluation, or service.

  • Optical Drive doesn't read DVD's

Hi, I own an HP Pavillion dv7 1279wm entertainment laptop. It came installed with Vista, but I installed a free upgrade to Windows 7 that I got from HP. I had a problem where the drive would not read anything; the disc would spin, but eventually the tray would automatically open and tell me to insert a disc. After using Microsoft FixIt, I was able to read CDs, but encountered the same problem when trying to load a DVD. Previous to using Microsoft FixIt, I did use device manager to uninstall the drive and then reboot so Windows 7 would automatically update the driver. I'm thinking that means that it's not a software problem, but if you can think of anything else I can do (short of swapping out drives because I don't have access to another drive) to rule out it being a software problem please let me know. I realize that combo drives typically use different lasers to read CDs and DVDs, so my guess is that the laser that reads DVDs has failed. If that is the case, where can I find the correct replacement part and how do I install it?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Hi Kevin,
If you eject the optical drive tray, you should see just one laser situated towards the centre of the tray - different voltages are applied to this depending on whether it's reading a CD or DVD.
First of all, use a soft, non abrasive material such as cotton or a cotton bud and gently clean the lens.
Check if this has made any difference.
If it still doesn't read DVDs, try following the procedure under the sub-heading 'Let me fix it myself' on the link below to remove the Upper and Lower filters, restart the notebook and see if this helps the issue.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116
If it still doesn't read DVDs, the following procedure will test if your notebook can start from a bootable disc in the optical drive - the advantage of trying this is that it will rule out any possible Windows driver error as the CD/DVD drive is under the control of the Bios when starting the notebook.  So if you find that the notebook will not boot from the DVD, then it's almost certainly a Hardware fault in the optical drive itself and it will need to be replaced.
Using another PC to create a Windows 7 Rescue DVD.  Download the relevant ISO from the link below.
    Windows 7 32bit
    Windows 7 64bit
You need use an application such as ImgBurn to correctly burn the ISO to a DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  Once created, insert the DVD and then restart the notebook and see if it boots from this disc - if it does, let the first screen come up ( this will show repair options etc ) then just remove the DVD and restart the notebook.  If the notebook will not boot from the DVD, it may just load straight into Windows.

  • After Upgrade to 10.5.8 Optical Drive will not Recognize DVD's

    Hello Everyone,
I was hoping that someone would be able to shed light on a problem I recently ran into after upgrading from Leopard 10.5.7 to 10.5.8 and possibly suggest a solution.
I believe there is an issue with the optical drive software. The reason I suspect this is because one evening I was able to watch a DVD without any problems. After completing the upgrade to version 10.5.8 of Leopard last night, the same DVD failed to play. When inserting the disk, the optical drive makes a whirring sound for about a minute then proceeds to spit out the DVD. I've tested this with CD's, which seem to work fine. Other DVD's have the same issue as the first.
Can anyone suggest anything to help sort this issue out?
    Many thanks to everyone.
    Ron

I'm facing the same issues with my MacBook and its "SuperDrive". Right after inserting any media, it spits it out immediately, thus, I'm not able to read nor write any kind of disc. Below are the specs for my "SuperDrive":
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868:
    Firmware: KA14
    Connection: ATAPI
    Recording: Yes
    Cache: 0 KB
    Reads DVD: Sim
    Records CD: -R, -RW
    Records DVD: -R, -RW
    Recording: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
I have sent Steve Jobs an email ([email protected], [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected]) and posted a feedback here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbook.html
Probably you guys have seen it already, but MacBook Pro owners are having similar issues with their "SuperDrives": http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1918925&start=0&tstart=0

  • My optical drive will not play Dvds..what can I do to fix it

Everytime I put a DVD into the optical drive it will not be recognized or play.  This all began to happen after the latest software update.

Do a SMC and PRAM reset at least 2-3 times for each. You may not be familiar with these resets, if not please click Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets for instructions.

  • Optical Drive Keeps spitting dvd+/-R DL

I would like to ask do my MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8221 read dvd +/- DL? I have tried it but I can't as 8221 keeps splitting it. May anyone suggest the solution? or I have to buy a new external DVD Drive ?
and one more question, if I want to upgrade my Tiger to Snow Leopard, so I buy the boxset from APPLE, but the format of the setup disc is D9, what can I do with my 8221?
    Thank you~

I agree with that, I had a similar issue with my dvd burner. When I would try to burn data off to a dvd, the burn session would automatically fail in both Disk Utility and Toast Titanium. I ran my CD lens cleaner via itunes 2-3 times and I'm now able to burn stuff off to DVD.

  • Drive keeps ejecting Blank DVDs but will read DVD with media in it

I am at loss what to do. Whenever I put in DVD with media in it (including +R), it plays and reads it all just fine. CD data reads no problem too. However, when I put in a Blank DVD, it chugs and ejects it out completely.
Preferences are fine. It says 'Ask What to Do' is set when 'You insert a Blank DVD'
Here was how it started. Previously, I could put in a blank DVD and it would be just fine but I'm having problems burning after the 10.5.6 update. Read in a post somewhere to try resetting your PRAM which I did and now it won't accept the blank DVDs. Everything else is fine.
Would really appreciate ANY help I can get!

Everything in your post indicates you're having the problem with a MacBook Pro. If that's the case, we need to get your post moved to the appropriate forum--it's currently in the iBook G4 forum.
If you're having troubles on the MacBook pro, I'll report your post so the hosts can move it for you.

  • Encore keeps rejecting my DVDs

    Hi there.
So I've just started using Encore. Everything is going great, until I click the Build button. Encore freezes for for about 30 seconds, and then asks me to "Please insert DVD media, close the tray and click OK." depsite there already being a blank DVD in the computer. I eject the DVD and insert a new DVD. It froze for 10 seconds before ejecting the DVD and asking me the same question again. I have no idea what else to do.
I'm using a Macbook Pro, with OS X Version 10.8.2 with a 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Dou Processor. The Encore version is 6.0.1.013
    Can anyone help me please?

If you are still having issues, even with the ISO, the two things that I would check would be whether there is a firmware update for your multi-drive/burner, from the manufacturer. If so, be VERY sure to read the installation instructions for updating the firmware. I always print out those instructions, so that I can follow every step, exactly.
Next, what brand of blank media are you using? I strongly recommend Falcon Pro, Verbatim or Taiyo-Yuden.
Also check the specs. of your particular multi-drive/burner. Most newer ones can handle -R, +R and RW blank discs, but some older ones might be limited to just a few of those types, and not all. If your multi-drive/burner has limitations, then make sure that you use a type of blank media, that it can handle.
Regarding blank media, make sure that it IS blank. If you grabbed a disc, that maybe had a failed burn, there could be lead-in data written to it (really hard to see by just looking at the disc), and it will not allow you to burn to it, as the multi-drive/burner will see that disc as already containing data, and not blank.
    Good luck,

  • Driver only rejecting ONE DVD!

I was watching the first season of Supernatural on DVD, and everything was going fine. However, when that ended and I popped in the first disc of the second season, it spun around for a minute, and then my driver spit it back out. It never appeared on the desktop, and the DVD player never launched it. So, I tried the SECOND disc of the season, and that one worked perfectly fine. In fact, every disc except this one works. What could possible be the problem?
This has happened before (with this disc only), and I received help on the forums. I was told to delete a certain .plist file, and it worked. However, when I tried it this time, it did NOT work. Am I deleting the wrong file? Why is it only this ONE DISC that I'm having problems with? PLEASE HELP ME!!!
(Also, I thought it might be relevant to add that I called AppleCare, and they didn't know what to do, either).

I've tried deleting the DVDplayer.plist, the DVD player Settings folder, restarting...Basically, I've tried every combination of those three things. I'm pretty sure I had to delete one of those files last time to get it to work, but it's not working this time. Could someone please help me out before I delete something serious? This is all very frustrating.

  • Floppy Drive keeps reading, no boot, HELP!!!

So, I was having troubles with my system, as in a previous thread, so I got a new Motherboard.  Set it up all good, booted up, Yay!  I tried to reboot, no luck, the computer wouldnt start up again.  Got it started up again, went to the MSI live update thing, downloaded the latest BIOS, loaded it onto a floppy, let it reboot, nothing happened.  OK, so I turned it off and back on again.  It immediately searches for a floppy in the drive, so I figure thats ok, but I get no display.  It beeps 4 times, which I figure is a good thing, restarts itself, I take the floppy out, but it continues to look for a floppy in the drive, and keeps beeping once, and then starting the floppy again.  I hard boot, still does the same thing.  I take the floppy cable out, and it gives me 8 beeps, which is supposed to be something about the video.  I know the video is ok, I was just using it.  If I plug the floppy back in, it does the same thing again.  I let it copy the bios a few times now, but still, the same thing keeps happening.  Have I destroyed the board?  please help!  Very frustrated!

tried flipping the floppy connector, but then the d-bracket indicates the same thing, and the light goes on, but i can't hear the drive trying to read like I could when it was the other way.  I think I have the cable in right, I just dont know why the computer goes straight to reading the drive.  Again, if I have a recovery floppy in the drive, it reads it, then gives me the all clear signal of 4 beeps, but then just tries to do it over and over and over.  sorry I am being so pestery, i just really want this to work.

  • Cd/dvd drive keeps ejecting cd/dvd!!!

My cd/dvd drive is going crazy. Soon after i put a cd or dvd in the drive, it spits it back out. it sounds as though it is trying to read the disc, but fails. My drive was working normal earlier today, then it went crazy?!? i am not too computer savvy...HELP!

Like I said I was having problems with the drive called AppleCare they told me to do some things I already done they included...
    Resetting PRAM and NVRAM
    Shut down the computer.
Holding down the Command(Apple), Option, P, and R and then hold the Power button simultaneously, and told me to do that 3 times and wait for 3 loud buzzing (or some odd sound I can't describe).
Also Resetting System Management Controller (SMC)
Was told to shutdown and disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery after that I had to press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds(I did 10 seconds) and then release the button, then reconnect the battery and AC Adapter and to restart the system.
I was asked to try the drive again and it did not work when I was talking on the phone with the person, they said they could not do any thing becasue I was out of warranty but I asked to talk to a manager or someone higher about all my problems with the MacBook and see if I could get a new unit and he said yes and put me on wait but when I was on wait I tried out the drive again and it worked again.
I do not know if it good again for the long run or it fail and just because of that! This is one of my least trusted Apple systems, for having the plastic replaced, having a hard drive go dead, and having the AC adapter switched out for a different one, and now this drive. This is one odd Apple system!
