Optical Drive makes noise twice on startup

Hi all,
This problem first appeared when I first changed my RAM from 4GB to 8GB last year.
After a year, the RAM broke down, failed the hardware test.
I replaced it and though the hardware test is passed, the optical drive noise issue persists.
The problem now is: upon startup, it's normal to have the optical drive noise ONCE, but my machine produces a second noise when it can't show up the Apple logo within 3 seconds, i.e. the optical drive searches for the hard drive again. (for a total of 2 times, it lets out the optical drive search noise)
To be more specific, when I restart it after a weird startup, it's normal again with just one optical drive noise (Only occuring upon the first startup).
I'm afraid it might be a repeat of history and the RAM breaks down after one year...
Thanks in advance.

rx,
I am having this exact same problem with my Macbook as well. I am very frustrated. My computer will be 2 yrs old in August. Within the last few months, I have had the battery replaced for burning up the computer (June '07), the optical drive replaced (Nov 07), and the hard drive replaced (Feb '08). It appears I am going to have to take it back to the mac store to get this fixed. This has been going on for a month and I have tried everything including Disk First Aid to try to get it stop! Please post if you find something else! Meanwhile, I will say the apple care warranty was a better investment then the computer itself. I have been VERY DISAPPOINTED with the product and I have had Mac products for years (Mac Performa, iMac, eMac, iPodmini).

  • Optical Drive makes noise when lid closed

    Hello all.
When ever my wife closes her MacBook the optical drive makes the noise as if it is being awken from sleep. The problem is that it does this over and over. The only way to stop it is to power down the computer. It does not do this when the computer is active, only when the lid is closed. Has this happened to anyone or does anyone know what the problem is and/or how to fix it?
    Thanks

  • Optical drive makes noises when waking up

Every time I turn the machine on or wake it up from sleep, the optical drives lets out a little whine, as if checking if there's a CD in the drive. I find that very disturbing. Is there a solution?

    Dushkin,
its normal behavior-basically, as you said, the OS
checking to see if there is a disc in the drive when
it starts or wakes up. What I find more annoying is
accidentally hitting the eject key all the time and
    hearing the same noise.
ugh the mis-hitting the eject button drives me nuts. cuse i do it so often when going to hit delete while typing. sometimes it doesnt even make the eject sound(if ive already hit it a number of times i think it knows there is no disk to eject)
im still looking for a software program that can disable the eject button on the keyboard, but obviously dont want to do irrepairable harm to my computer so it looks like i will just deal with the mis-hits

  • Optical Drive makes noise when waking from sleep

When I open my MBP it sounds like it is loading a CD.  Just anoying when your trying to be quite in a quite room.

Not sure. I have a late 2011 and I can't say where mine does it or not. But with newer system Apple changed how the EFI sets up the hardware and Sleep mode can go into the Deep Sleep Hibernate mode which is basically shutting the system down and writing the contents of RAM to the hard drive. Then when it is woken it read that data from the HDD back into RAM. With that is also might do a more thorough check of the hardware.

  • Disk Drive make noises.

I got a Mac Book Pro. Disk Drive makes noises . There is no Disk in Drive. But stll Noises..
What happen , what can i do.. ?

    Hi,
What happens when you pop a disk into the drive? Does it mount? You usually get this kind of noise on startup when there's something wrong with RAM, and the machine won't boot.

  • C2D LG/Hitatchi HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA4080MA Optical Drive Boot Noise

I was just wondering if any other C2D Macbook Pro users with the new LG/Hitatchi optical drive have noticed a different sound coming from it when the computer boots compared to the sound the optical drive made in previous Macbook Pros and Powerbooks (MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D). The drive itself functions fine, but this is a replacement computer (which makes me paranoid to begin with), and between my previous C2D and the Powerbook before that, which both had the MATSHITA, the noise the optical drive makes when the computer boots is noticeably different--it's a short, quick noise, not as drawn out as before. I called Apple, and they hadn't heard anything about it, and told me to reset my SMC, which I did and no change in boot noise. I think the boot noise is functionally correct, just want to see if anyone else with the LG optical drive has noticed it...

I just had my optical drive replaced. The drive does make a different noise than the Matshita drive that was in the computer before. The noise that I'm hearing isn't anything to be worried about. I just take it to be that it is a different mechanism. And it is a noise that I've heard in other optical drives that I haven't had a problem with.

  • Optical Drive makes funny sound?

I have Toast 10 loaded on my macbook, which I sometimes use to load .dmg's (as in to MOUNT a CD)
however I've noticed ever since I started doing this whenever my macbook starts up OR wakes up from sleep the optical drive make a "whirring" sound, the same sound as when I start up the App Toast, almost as if its NOW looking for optical media (to burn or otherwise) whether its there or not...
Is this sound not a good thing?

I found THIS...heres what some folks had to say about a self test, I think Toast instigates this self test and now it does it all the time...
These folks said not to worry...?

  • Optical drive makes weird noise when CD/DVD is inserted, won't play

OK so...When I put a CD or a DVD into the optical drive, it makes this weird consistant sound that, while i feel like an idiot typing it out, sounds something like: eee ooh ooh eee ooh ohh eee ooh ooh.
It does this for a couple minutes until it responds to me pushing the eject button.
    Anyone know what this is?

    Anyone know what this is?
I would guess a hardware failure.

  • Slot-loaded optical drive make hissing noise without any disc inside

I got the MBP 15" (mid-2010) two months ago. Recently I found the optical drive made hissing noise even when there was no disc inside. It sounds like trying to mount or eject the disc. I am not sure it is hardware-related or software-releated problems. Can someone help me?

  • Optical Drive-Strange noises

Whenever I try to put a disk into my optical drive, it works normally, but thers a weird snapping noise, like some sort of motor is winding too tight, and snapping back. The drive runs normally, and ive had no problem with the drive, im just wondering if this sound is normal or not. I've noticed that my friends Macbook Pro dosnt make this noise.

Can you tell us what tests, Luke, and exactly how you managed this?
My MacBook also makes loud strange clicking noises when a CD or DVD is inserted.
What worries me is that they're just not healthy sounds for an optical drive to make (unless one is feeding a house brick into them).
Can it really be 'normal', or have just some of us got faulty drives which will cease to work, tantalisingly just after our free Applecare has expired?
Has anyone got a MacBook that takes discs in silently?

  • Optical drive making noise when waking from sleep

    Hello everyone.
I recieved my MacBook about three weeks ago, and haven't had any problems with it. Hope I never will have.
One thing that bothers me, however, is that when it wakes from sleep, the DVD-drive makes a noise - as if trying to read a disc that isn't there. The drive is empty.
This is beginning to get annoying, as I often use my Macbook in small classrooms, where being quiet is a virtue.
You have any idea what I can do to stop this madness? Hopefully it can be solved via. software, but what say you?
    Macbook 13" White   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1 GB

It's normal. I believe the reason why it happens is that most drives, by default, when they have power applied to them, they start scanning to see if a disk is inserted. By this time (machine turns on), the OS or the drivers are not loaded to tell the unit NOT to scan, therefore it happens. Now if the OS or the drivers are loaded they could probably prevent it from doing that. Obviously that's only when the OS is already running and thus the machine is already on.
Luckily it's only once, but these kinds of issues have a long history to them... For example, back in the Amiga days, the machine would do automatic detection of floppy disks, and the way it did it was by moving the heads to a negative track, which would cause a click every second or so. Extremely smart of the engineers, because the drive wasn't supposed to support such functionality. At the same time it was extremely annoying to have the click happen! Finally some guys wrote some software to fix that, before too many people went insane from the clicking
Luckily our superdrives don't do something like that every second

  • MBP Optical Drive / HD Noise

Hello, my MacBook Pro seems to be making a low pitched helicopter/car engine running noise , it comes from the right corner (below the palm rest area)
Im quite sure it is the optical drive because today for the first time since having the computer i burned a DVD.
Now every 10minutes or so the noise will start (for no reason) and this 'helicopter spinning' noise will continue for about another 2minutes and then stop again.
I think have heard the 'moo' sound described before on these forums, and i am sure this is different.
Has anyone had this problem? The noise is very loud and interferes with my work (my MBP whines but it is very quiet, this is much louder)
I am in the process of talking to Apple support, but if anyone on here has any help please do reply.
MacBook Pro 15" 1.83Ghz 1GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Latest Firmware - Burnt many CD's before, but this issue seems to have come from burning a DVD

I am still having this issue, and i have posted a recording of the noise.
Please go to: http://www.phantomfiles.co.uk/macbookpronoise.mp3 to hear my recording.
(You may need to turn your volume up, as the recording level isnt a good quality, but the actual noise is quite loud)
Your advise on this would be much appreciated

  • Drive makes noise at home, not at the genius bar!

Hello, I am sure that all of you have had this happen to you. Your mac has a problem, so you bring it to the apple store.. However, once your are there, the problem stops! Yet when you get back home, it starts up again!
I have full Apple Care, so everything SHOULD be free for me... Here is my story:
My macbook's cd drive makes a loud buzz whenever it spins fast.. The computer is smart enuff to spin it down to a low speed, yet this is not good. CD rips stay at about 3x.. and booting from a cd is terrible! I went to the apple store, waited 40 miutes to speek with a genius, and when we put in a cd, it was whisper quiet and worked well.... He told me that it was fine, so I left. Well, its doing it again... Should I go to the apple store and demand that they replace it? Will they do this?
    -Jordan

    Some ideas:
Did you bring the same CDs that make noise with you to the Genius Bar, or did Apple Supply the CD?
Is it possible that the Genius Bar was too noisy for them to hear the noise?
Did you do exactly the same activity that causes the buzz at home at the Bar?
Does you MacBook have to be hot (or cold) for the noise to happen. Perhaps it needed more time to get acclimated at the Bar?
Does your MacBook have to be plugged into wall power (or running on battery) for the noise to happen? Did they plug it in the same way at the Bar? Did they use your power adapter, or theirs?

  • Idle Super Drive, makes noise every few minutes

My empty and idle super drive will make a mechanical noise, which sounds like the initial motion before the drive drawer opens (perhaps the head seeking and moving). The sound is an annoyance and obviously something is moving and therefore wearing. This happens every few minutes, even when the computer is idle. The drive works fine, both reading and burning. Anyone know what is initiating this movement and how to stop it?
    Thanks!
    G5 Mac OS X (10.4.8)

My PowerMac G5 drive makes the same noise. It's been happening ever since 10.4.6.
About every five minutes or so, the superdrive will sorta spin up like it's about to read a CD-ROM even if there's no CD in the drive.
It's sorta annoying but I'm more worried about the extra wear and tear on the drive.
I haven't been able to figure out why this happens.

Try upgrading the firmware for your BluRay drive to the latest. The firmware is available at the web support portal Driver & downloads section for your notebook.
If after updating the firmware you see no change in the issue, contact HP for warranty service.
Advise the HP Customer Service representative that you did update the firmware to try and correct the problem.
