Optical drive making squealing noise

all of a sudden my optical drive is making a high pitched squealing noise. also i've been able to burn dvd+r and now it just spits them out. i've had my mac for less then two years. this is my first mac (pc user for years) i really hope its not breaking down already. any help would be great.

It does sound like a fault with the optical drive. It is the noise that bothers me. I would still try clearing the pram if you haven't as yet (hold down applealt+pr while booting up, and wait to hear the 3rd chime before releasing them) and possibly resetting the SMC (unlikely solution), but that would not account for the noise.

I have a brand new Satellite E205 with an optical CD/DVD drive.
I've found that it's very sensitive to movement as anytime the machine gets slightly moved or I'm working with it on my bed, it will repeatedly make an eject noise.
Is there a way to disable/turn off the optical drive? Is this behavior normal?

I think there is no way to disable the dvd drive in your computer(you can check power option) Is it really an ejecting sound or like a ticking sound? You might enable the acoustic silencer in your computer
you can go to Start> All programs> Toshiba>CD/DVD> acoustic silencer
if that option is not there it could be something else

I got the MBP 15" (mid-2010) two months ago. Recently I found the optical drive made hissing noise even when there was no disc inside. It sounds like trying to mount or eject the disc. I am not sure it is hardware-related or software-releated problems. Can someone help me?

Optical Drive making a beeping noise

This is really starting to drive me crazy. My macbook pro will every hour or so make a quick beeping and clicking noise near the optical drive. I dont have any apps open that would be trying to check to see if there is a disc and there are no discs in the drive when this happens. I can burn dvd/cd just fine its just that noise that is really starting to bother me I have had this since I got the computer from day one? Anyone else experience this?? Thanks!!

I have the same beeping noise but I can't tell where it is coming from exactly. Doesn't seem like it is the speakers though. It does seem to be front right corner somewhere near the optical drive. Mine is not very often so it is hard to trouble shoot.
My DVD drive also goes through a very noisy start up cycle, three times, each time I wake up the computer. A brand new (one week) 15.4" 2.53 GHz MBP. Does yours do this as well?

Optical drive making noise when waking from sleep

Hello everyone.
I recieved my MacBook about three weeks ago, and haven't had any problems with it. Hope I never will have.
One thing that bothers me, however, is that when it wakes from sleep, the DVD-drive makes a noise - as if trying to read a disc that isn't there. The drive is empty.
This is beginning to get annoying, as I often use my Macbook in small classrooms, where being quiet is a virtue.
You have any idea what I can do to stop this madness? Hopefully it can be solved via. software, but what say you?

It's normal. I believe the reason why it happens is that most drives, by default, when they have power applied to them, they start scanning to see if a disk is inserted. By this time (machine turns on), the OS or the drivers are not loaded to tell the unit NOT to scan, therefore it happens. Now if the OS or the drivers are loaded they could probably prevent it from doing that. Obviously that's only when the OS is already running and thus the machine is already on.
Luckily it's only once, but these kinds of issues have a long history to them... For example, back in the Amiga days, the machine would do automatic detection of floppy disks, and the way it did it was by moving the heads to a negative track, which would cause a click every second or so. Extremely smart of the engineers, because the drive wasn't supposed to support such functionality. At the same time it was extremely annoying to have the click happen! Finally some guys wrote some software to fix that, before too many people went insane from the clicking
Luckily our superdrives don't do something like that every second

Optical Drive Random Whirring Noise

My MacBook Pro's optical drive has been making a random whirring noise for some time now. It's similar to the noise it makes when you insert a disc but there's no disc in it. It seems to be doing it more frequently lately and it's done it since before I installed 10.5. I think something may be wrong with the drive. Anyone know why it would do this? Should I bring it in to be repaired?

CD / DVD drive making funny noises....

Not the most tech savvy of posts I know, but when I insert a DVD disc into my drive, it just whirrrs, and clicks, and after about a minute, spits it out.
Any ideas??

The drive is making funny noises because it's trying to read the disk. If it can't read the disk, it will spit it back out. Try wiping the disk from the center out with a cloth to remove any fingerprints. Hope this helps!

Optical Drive Wake-up Noise

Two identical MacPros / Snow Leopard- one is quiet at wake-up, on the other the empty optical drive spins loudly for a few seconds. Obviously one machine knows the drive is empty and the other doesn't.
Other similar problem on MacBook / 10.5.8 - Empty optical drive clatters at start up (sounds like it's trying to mount a non-existent disk).
How do I stop this?

Not a solution, just a question, sorry. If there's a disc in the drive, it's not as noisy from the start?
I remember something I was told a long time ago, it may have been a myth though. That for top performance one would want to have a disc in their machine. The idea being that once a disc is in there the computer doesn't have to check if there is one there all the time, therefore not diverting the Macs resources. If that has any truth to it, maybe that's why the noise. That is you're right, the noise indicates it keeps checking to see. Why two identical Macs wouldn't be the same there though, I don't know. Perhaps something funky with that particular drive or with that particular Mac itself.
I have my DVD drive mounted externally via Firewire, it's a lot noisier now overall, even if i start it up with a disc inside. However as soon as the disk appears on the desktop and if I double click on it, the noise mostly stops immediately.
No help there at all, was there... Well, at least I bumped you up a bit.

Optical Drive making horrible sounds upon boot!

I have a black Macbook, and my Optical Drive is making horrible sounds when I boot. Now, I'm not sure if it's the Optical Drive or the HDD, but it's coming from the upper right-hand corner.
If this helps, I dropped it earlier today and I could have damaged it. I know the difference between the way it normally sounds when it boots and this. This kind of sounds like when you're inserting a CD into the Optical Drive, but far worse? The sound also happens when you press the Eject button.
Please help me, I need to know if I should bring it into an Apple Store immediately.

I have a mcabook 13 inch (white, not black LOL) that does the same thing. It was used by a guy at my work (it is a work laptop) and when he returned it to me (I am the IT guy) it wouldnt boot up. Warranty fixed this, but the grind is still there. This is the same guy who destroyed the screen on his PC laptop by dropping it down some stairs. So no doubt he has dropped this mac, which I have decided will stay in my personal care

Optical drive makes weird noise when CD/DVD is inserted, won't play

OK so...When I put a CD or a DVD into the optical drive, it makes this weird consistant sound that, while i feel like an idiot typing it out, sounds something like: eee ooh ooh eee ooh ohh eee ooh ooh.
It does this for a couple minutes until it responds to me pushing the eject button.
Anyone know what this is?

IMac hard drive making knocking noise

Hi everyone. I woke up my iMac this morning, and the drive was making a knocking noise. There would be three "knocks" over and over again. Behind the noise, I could hear the whine of a motor speeding up, and then dying down. It repeated in a cycle: the motor winding up then dying down while three knocks could be heard. The computer would not wake up from this.
Finally, I rebooted with the install disc as a startup disc. When the computer turned on, it did not show the internal hard drive at all! I rebooted again, and this time the computer fired up just fine and everything was back to normal.
I've started backing up everything to an external drive. But I'm wondering: Is it time to go shopping for a new machine? This one is about four or five years old. I assume that if my hard drive is bad, it's not cost-effective to have it repaired. Is that correct?
Oh, FWIW, I did check the internal drive with the Disk Utility, and the SMART status said it was verified. (I don't know what this means, but I read about it online.)

Hi Roger. You were right about the pricing. I could have had a nice, much larger drive installed for about $279. But there was one thing that gave me pause: The screen was starting to show random lines and artifacts - all signs of the well-documented iMac display problems. Fixing that would have been a much more expensive proposition, and I decided a four-year-old machine wasn't worth it.
So instead, I backed everything up to an external drive and ordered a new 27-inch iMac, which is great. But while waiting for my new machine, I had to keep my old one alive. I noticed that the drive had problems waking up after the machine was asleep or off for more than a few hours. When this would happen, I would boot up with the installation disk and run the Mac hardware test. The test never detected any problems with the computer, but for some reason, just running the test (in the extended, 10-minute mode) would "wake" the hard drive back up.
After a few days of this, I came up with another solution. I just turned on iTunes and left it playing all night. I turned off the sound, so I didn't hear it. With this app running, the hard drive never went completely to sleep, and the machine would wake up every morning.
When my new iMac arrived, I connected it to my old machine (after waiting a few more days for a 800- to 400- Firewire adaptor - I didn't know the two machines used different Firewire connectors!) and I used Migration Assistant to move my data.
And with that, my old iMac died! It wouldn't boot up again at all. But it was still a good machine, and I didn't want to toss it. So I ordered a new 500Gb Seagate HD online for about $45 and a set of Torx screwdrivers. Using my new iMac to watch a Youtube video on how to replace the drive in the old machine, I swapped out the drive. The old iMac is now my kitchen computer, which I use for reading news, cruising the web and listening to iTunes. It doesn't need a large drive, since it's just used for light duty. And since it stays pretty cool (I'm not using it a lot or running CPU-intensive apps on it), the display problems so far have not reappeared.

Ibook g4 won't go past gray screen, hard drive making whirirng noises

I think I'm in pretty serious trouble here...
I left my 2-yr old ibook g4 running last night downloading a couple of torrents, and woke up in the middle of the night because it was making a loud whirring noise. I tried to close everything, but found that it was frozen. So I just powered it off. I've never had it freeze on me, or otherwise had any problems with it before.
When I turned it on this morning, it would make the initial startup chime, but would not go past the grey screen with the apple. I tried several times, with a couple of slightly different results. The first time I got the apple with the circle underneath. The second time, I got no apple, but the circle with a line through it. And the final time, its just been the apple. And all the while, the hard drive is making a really ill sounding whirr.
I read another post about trying to boot from the install CD, so I inserted the CD & pressed c, but nothing happens, and now the CD won't eject.
Is it possible that it overheated? I got an e-mail about the battery recall, but according to my serial number, mine wasn't one that was being recalled.

Haven't had any replies yet, but I do have some progress to report...
I was able to eject the Panther Install CD1 after all (pressed the eject button immediately after I powered on). Have tried booting from it a couple of times, to no avail. I was, however, able to boot it from my friend's Tiger Install DVD. I went into Disk Utility, as I have read elsewhere and tried to repair my hard disk using that, but got the following error:
"Repair disk failed. Could not unmount disk"
Probably a stupid question, but is it because its not the correct operating system?
I still don't know why it won't boot from my Panther CD.
I have tried to boot in Safe Mode, but all I get is a little folder icon that alternately flashes the finder icon & a question mark.
I purchased my ibook online when I was still living in Canada, but its no longer under warranty and I didn't purchase the protection plan. I am currently living in rural Japan, with absolutely no Apple Stores anywhere remotely close to where I am.
I've also seen elsewhere that I could probably just get a new hard drive, which is fine as I could use the extra space anyway, but does this mean I lose everything that's on my current hard drive??
If anyone has any suggestions, it'd much appreciated!

Disc drive making strange noises

Whenever I insert my Sims 3 disc (haven't tried with other discs) my drive does one of the following:
1. Starts making a worrying noise, as if the top of the disc was being rubbed against a brush, and takes FOREVER to load (and eventually spits it out anyway)
2. Makes a 'bo-bo-BEEP' noise repetitively, and doesn't eject the disk, even when I press eject.
This has only been happening for half an hour, but it still worries me. And worse yet, you need a disc to play The Sims! This is the third time I've had a disc drive that stopped working for no reason, but usually I can fix it. Not this time though...

Try another disc and see what happens. Or is the Sims 3 disc stuck? If it is, try this to eject it:
If the drive does not eject discs use the F12 or eject key on the keyboard.
If the disc will not eject try dragging the disc icon to the trash.
If the disc will still not eject, holding down the trackpad or mouse button after restarting the computer should also eject a disc.
If the disc continues not to eject, reset the Power Manager (PMU) or System Management Controller (SMC) and try steps 1-4 again.

IMac Mid 2007 Hard Drive Making weird noise

My 20 Inch Aluminum iMac from mid 2007 started to make some weird noises today when I turned it on. Not the usual noises but a mix between a creeking noise and a scratching noise. I have a program called smart reporter and my hard drive is not failing, but it is making noise. It is the hard drive because I checked the fan speed, and I know what the fan sounds like when they are on very high, also it is not the microphone, or speakers, i tested them both. I do not know what to do and this is a major problem, since my warranty expired on august 31st. Please help, I am open to anything, Thanks.

If the hard drive in your intel iMac was as easy to replace as the one in the G5 iMacs I would suggest buying a new drive and installing it yourself. Unfortunately it's not for the faint of heart.
I'm not sure how much Apple or an Apple authorized service center will charge you for a new hdd and install. I would call around and ask.
You can always just make sure your files are backed up and just wait. Who knows. It could be a couple years before it dies or tomorrow if that the problem. It's up to you.
