Optical drive no longer mounts blanks after erasing dvd-rw

hi, hopefully someone can help with this -
new macbook pro (couple months old)
i've used the optical drive twice, to burn onto a couple maxell dvd+rw discs - this worked fine.
today, i put one of the discs i'd previously used in, hit "erase" in disk utility ...
since then, the drive won't mount or recognize any blank media ... (the drive just hums for a bit, then nothing)
i tried the erased DVD-RW disc in another mac, it mounted fine - so the problem's not the discs ....
the optical drive seems to mount old data DVD-R's, authored DVDs, and CD's just fine ... but it now won't mount any blank media at all (whether CD-R, DVD-RW, or DVD-R)
weird - it's like erasing a DVD+RW has somehow wiped the drive's ability to mount fresh, blank discs...
is it possible the erase operation busted something in the drive ... maybe that kind of operation uses part of the hardware mechanism that only affects the reading of blank media ? or could this be a software problem?
i tried resetting pram and repairing perms, this had no effect.
here's the spec of the optical drive :
MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-875:
Firmware Revision: DA09
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

ok, just to add to this -
i made a small install of OSX.5.2 (from the MBP install disc) on a FW drive, and booted from that - and lo and behold, blank media is recognized ...
... so this points to a software problem ...

  • Drives no longer mount - Only after restart do they mount

Upgrade to from 10.4 to 10.5 and ran all updates...currently have 10.5.4. My external drives no longer mount when i plug them in via usb port. Worked perfectly before upgrade. Additionally my ipod wont mount either. They dont show up in disc utility either...However if i have these devices plugged in with the computer turned on (and they aren't mounting) and i restart my computer then when it boots up again they mount and function just fine. but if i unmount and turn them off and turn them back on...they dont mount.
    any suggestions?

    Hi grant862
I seam to be having the same issue. I have a number of Flash cards and a flash card reader, well tow card readers actually. I cant get the cards to mount. I have tried swapping usb cables and card readers. I have tried both readers in all my USB ports (17" Mac Book - 10.5.4). The only way that I can get them to mount is if I plug the cards back into the cam, eras an connect them. I think there is a software glitch somewhere. I don't think its the usb ports as I have tried keyboards and mice connected via these ports with no issue. I don't expect an answer to this, but Grant - if you are still out there - I wanted you to know you weren't alone. I am going to try re-installing the 10.5.4 combi download and see what happens. Oh yes and 'repair permissions' (which I have already done once...) but am beginning to think that this is just a bit like saying a mantra as a way of calming me.

  • Re: Satellite U300 - Optical drive no longer registers after prog uninstall

    Hi,
I recently uninstalled a programme for a DV camera on my Satellite U300. After the uninstall, I am no longer able to use the optical drive. If I put a cd/dvd into the drive it will 'fire up' however it will not register with the laptop to enable play. I have tried diagnostics test, but it just skips past optical drive as if it was not there.
Has the uninstall also removed driver software for the optical drive and, if so, is there anyway for me to recover/download the driver without a full recovery losing all other installs on the machine?
    Any advice greatly received!

    Hi,
is the optical drive present in the device manager?? If so, then remove it and reboot your machine. After that the drive should be reinstalled automatically.
If not, then perform a complete registry check with some registry cleaning software.
    Afterwards perform the first step.
If this does not help, then it would be better to recover your machine..
    Cheers

  • Daisy-Chained External Drive No Longer Mounting

I have two external hard drives daisy-chained (firewire 800) to my iMac. The hard drive directly connected my iMac mounts fine. The daisy-chained hard drive no longer mounts, after mounting perfectly fine for a few months. I've tried restarting, etc with no success. Any help would be appreciated.

    moretoexplore wrote:
No, it does not mount directly. I did however try using the other hard drive's power cord and it mounted without problem. But this doesn't fix the problem.. only one drive is mounting. At least it seems I have ruled out a more serious problem with the drive itself. I'm contacting Lacie to get a new power cord. Hopefully, with a new power cord, this will resolve the issue and it isn't some sort of daisy-chain issue.
I think you have solved the problem by elimination.
You can prove that it's the power cord by using the "bad" one on the working drive. If it stops working, it's guaranteed to be the power cord.
I believe that there were some issues with some of the LaCie Power Supplies.

  • External optical drive Asus SBC-06D2X-U not reading dvd's

My optical drive no longer worked on my iMac, so I purchased an external optical drive : ASUS SBC-06D2X-U, which as per the box, guy at the store and online reviews, can read blu-rays....
When I insert a dvd or Blu-ray, they appear on the desktop's upper corner. However, nothing happens. It doesn't start to play. When I click on the dvd icon, this what I see.. see attached pictures. I've tried looking on the ASUS website for info, but no luck.
Any ideas on what could cause this issue ?
    Thanks,
    Julie

Blu Ray DVD is an oxymoron   Oops.  Yeah, I wasn't thinking.  How embarrassing.  Anyhow, to further describe the problem:
The drive shows up in FCP as an option to which I can burn.  If I put in a regular, single layer DVD, it worked (2nd try, first try I got an error saying it had failed to burn because it had failed to calibrate the laser for the media, or something like that.  I just ran it again, same disc and was successful).  If I put in a dual layer DVD, it errors out and does nothing (sorry, I forget the exact error message reported) and I have to disconnect and reconnect the drive in order to get the "eject" button on the front of the drive to work.  If I put in a blank Blu Ray disc, the drive spins up, tries to see what the disc is (I guess) and then just ejects the disc again.  If I put in a regular DVD movie, it plays no problem.  I have not tried to view a Blu Ray yet.  Oh!  And the time I successfully burned a DVD, now that I think about it, I first mistakenly just copied the .img file to a DVD, then I actually used the Drive Utility and burned the .img to a DVD that plays.  I created the.img file from FCP when I couldn't get the burning to work the first time, but that was dual layer, which as I said earlier, seems to cause issues - I will try again to burn directly from FCP to a single layer DVD, since I know I can at least do that much.  Then I will see if ASUS can be any help, since the fact that the drive won't even look at a blank Blu Ray disc and just spits it out doesn't seem like a problem with the Mac/ASUS relationship as much...?

  • Apple store installed optical drive replacement. It plays CD and DVD but will not let me change a DVD to .mp4 without stalling and or going very very slow.  Can I fix the HL-DT-STDVDRW  GA11NR?

Apple store installed optical drive replacement. It plays CD and DVD but will not let me change a DVD to .mp4 without stalling and or going very very slow.  Can I fix the HL-DT-STDVDRW  GA11NR?  The Apple store is a two hundred mile one way trip.

I didn't imply anything; I simply explained the terms of the ToU here because you had not specified what you were trying to do. Most such related questions are about copying protected content and I would not appreciate having my post removed with the obligatory email from Apple because I violated the ToU. In any case, you can find dozens of threads googling (or here) about the newer burners being slow copying content if it is protected. FWIW, if the DVD was produced by a commercial outfit, they may have used some sort of protection or an unusual file format - that problem has been discussed here previously.
As for your slow burner - since we don't even know what type of Mac/model/year/OS  you have, it is impossible to guess. If it's an iMac, those vertically installed burners are known to be less than perfect; the horizontally installed versions are better, but still not as good as an external. I've used an external burner for years.
As for the conversion time: the burner should have nothing to do with that; it is your software and your Mac's processor and amount of RAM that matter for conversions and rendering. I have no idea what you are using to burn the DVD. And, as a last consideration: you should always burn your content at a slow speed so you can avoid burn errors and have better results.
    Good luck.

  • Optical drive no longer working after upgrade to Snow Leopard

I have read several of the posts about problems with the optical drive, but I think my problem is different.
    I have a MacBook Pro, early 2008 (non-unibody)
Under Leopard, I had no problems with the optical drive. I purchased Snow Leopard (the single disc, 10.6.3 version). The upgrade went smoothly. From that moment on, the optical drive fails to read both CD's and DVD's.
I have reset SMC and PRAM/NVRAM, but that made no difference.
Thanks in advance for any ideas!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Try running a DVD Lens Cleaner disc through it, a little bit of dust or dirt is all it takes to throw them out and it might just be co-incidental with the upgrade.

  • Drive no longer recognizes blank DVD's since I've upgraded to Snow Leopard

Hello, I have an issue with my Super Drive (the UJ-875). Since I've upgraded to Snow Leopard, the drive no longer recognizes any blank media in it. I've tried -R, +R, -RW and +RW. No dice. The discs can be put in the drive and ejected without issue, it's just they are never displayed in Finder or Disk Utility. When I try to burn a mounted disc image, it simply sits there saying "To begin, insert a blank disc". I've tried using the exact same spindle of blank TDK -R's that I was using before I upgraded the O.S. I also tried some blank Sony media and it doesn't recognize it. It should be noted that the drive doesn't seem to have any issue with previously recorded discs. Those appear to read just fine, it's only blank media that looks like the issue. Any answers you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Below is the Disc Burning information that's displayed in About This Mac:

  • Optical drives reads but wont write after swap

hello everyone, I bought an iMac G3 450MHz that had had a 'superdrive' fitted. It both read and wrote CD's and DVDs. I tested it out and it worked just fine, I even made a back up copy of my Tiger DVD with it. I wanted to put the optical drive into my beloved Flower Power 600 iMac CD-RW so ,to make sure all the drive cables etc weren't disturbed, I just removed the whole caddy with the HDD plus the optical drive plus all the connecting cables, and popped it into my Flower Power. It booted up fine so I loaded (via carbon copy cloner) the contents of my original HDD. Now, when I look in system profiler, the optical drive shows up as a read/write but will only read discs. If I put in a blank disc the iMac's OS doesn't see the blank disc. Funnily enough my copy of Toast does see it and Toast launches itself. As I want to be able to burn disc images using Disk Utility this is a bit of a problem for me. I might just add, as it may be of some interest, that whoever fitted the superdrive had the HDD jumpers set to Slave but this was how it was when it worked perfectly in the 450MHz it came in so this was how I left them. The other little problem is the iMac won't sleep but I can live with that.

The reason your hard drive is set to slave is because it shares the IDE bus with the optical drive. With the stock optical drive, the optical drive is set to slave and the hard drive is set to master. However, that superdrive is probably hardwired to master, so the hard drive needs to be slave. As long as one drive is slave and the other drive is master, it should work fine.
Are you using the exact same system installation from the 450 on the 600? If not, there was probably some special driver installed to enable the all the superdrive features. Toast is a third-party app that is designed to work with many different optical drives, so such a driver would be built into the software, which would explain why it works (and Disk Utility does not).
What company sold (and installed) this superdrive?

  • DVD optical drive no longer works with Windows under bootcamp or parallels

For some strange reason, the DVD optical drive- Optiarc 5680 on my 27" iMac, no longer works anymore with Windows under Parallels or Bootcamp. It used to work perfectly fine before, but now it just shows up with a yellow exclamation mark under Device Manager and Code 39 "Windows cannot load the device driver..."
The DVD drive continues to still work fine with OSX. But it won't work anymore under Windows via Parallels or bootcamp, despite trying to uninstall the optical device drivers, update, reinstall, etc. Anybody else experiencing this or have any ideas?

Finally found the solution for anybody else who runs into this problem. It was solved by doing a registry mod in Windows from this site:
    http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems
described in “My CD drives have vanished (from Explorer, Device Manager, etc.)”
After applying the registry changes the DVD optical drive worked instantly again with Windows....sigh...guess I can't blame the Mac on this one.

  • LaCie Hard Drive No Longer Mounts on iBook G4

    Hello,
My LaCie 600 GB Hard drive will no longer mount onto my iBook G4. I had this problem about 6 months ago. It was solved by reformatting my whole computer through the installation disks that came with my computer. After I reformatted it, the hard drive was immediately recognized. I don't want to go that route again because I have a lot of programs on there that would take forever to reinstall. I have all of my important info backed up, just not the programs itself.
    I've tried running:
    Macaroni
    Utility Disk
    Data Rescue II
And neither of these came up with any "diagnosis" on why my hard drive won't mount. I check my cables through plugging my hard drive in other computers, and it works fine. I think it has to do with my hardware on my iBook G4.
When I plug it into my usb port, the blue light on my hard drive turns on, and I can hear the inside spinning. It just doesn't pop up onto my desktop. It doesn't show up in disk utility either.
Any ideas on what I can do?
    -Kristen

I would contact the folks at LaCie for their feedback.

  • BUG: Sandisk USB flash drive in "half-mounted" state after wake from sleep

My Sandisk Cruzer Crossfire 4GB Flash Drive is left in a half-mounted state after wake from sleep. The Finder believes the drive is still mounted, the icon is on the Desktop. However opening a file on the drive, or trying to eject the drive, results in a long beach ball, followed by a message that I removed the drive without Ejecting it first. The same drive continues to work fine on my Tiger machine, and on PCs.
    Bug Report:
    Setup:
    Macbook 1st Gen (2.0 Ghz)
Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 Clean Install
Sandisk Cruzer Crossfire 4GB USB Flash Drive (in either port)
    Repro:
    Plug in the drive.
Close the MacBook to put it to sleep
    Reopen the MacBook
    Result:
The lights on the flash drive never light back up after wake from sleep. Navigating the drive, or trying to eject it results in a "you removed the device without ejecting it first" message.
    Expected:
Drive should still be mounted and accessible after waking back up.

It may be a design flaw in the device. Mac OS X does a lot more power management than most other OSes, including tearing devices down to little or no power during sleep. It is possible that the device simply misbehaves due to corrupted memory state or reports a substantially different GUID or something similarly bizarre upon wake. (Okay, that last one wouldn't technically be a power management issue....)
If it doesn't have any problems except when sleeping the system, I would just make sure I unmounted it before putting the machine to sleep and wouldn't worry about it. Maybe check with Sandisk to see if they have a firmware updater for the device.

  • [SOLVED] Optical drive no longer detected

Edit:This is so stupid. I had it disabled in BIOS. I don't remember doing it. I apologize for the noise.
I don't know when this happened, but fairly recently. Maybe with linux-3.2 or kmod.
My optical drive is no longer detected. This is what I found in my old logs:
    kernel.log.3:Dec 18 22:39:31 localhost kernel: [ 5.277389] sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 24x/24x writer dvd-ram cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
    kernel.log.3:Dec 18 22:39:31 localhost kernel: [ 5.277738] sr 1:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0
I no longe have any mention of sr0 anywhere and I can't eject the drive. It's completely dead while Arch is booted. It works fine when I'm in the BIOS configuration menu.
Am I missing a module or something like that?

Repair needed for my MacBook - ComboDrive has been replaced by an internal SuperDrive. Everything is working, now.
ComboDrive was going to die. Problems caused by too much heat. Also re-installed FanControl for heating problems.
