Optical Drive Not Recognized, CD Stuck

I've just received my MacBook back after having it repaired for a broken Inverter cable. Ive had it since April and this is the third fault. I inserted a CD into the Slot Loading Combo Drive to rip it to iTunes, The CD was not recognised so i tried to eject it. Nothing happened. The CD doesnt appear on the desktop and when i press the media eject key the eject icon doesnt come up. Even more worrying is the fact that i went onto the Windows half of the computer via Boot Camp and Window Media Player tells me that i cant rip CDs cos i dont have a CD drive!!!!!!!!!! Looked on system profiler and under Disc Burning i apparently have no Disc Burning Devices, even though i have used it before many times!!! I have tried ejecting the CD by various methods suggested with no avail. It doesnt help that my restart and shut down buttons dont work, so i cant do many of the methods of ejecting. I am NOT sending it back to be repaired again as it is a three hour round trip to my nearest repair centre and even further to my nearest Apple store. Any one with same problem or siggestions please reply!!!

also with the Sony CD-R 700MB blank discs it doesn't work. i keep getting the message "cd burning failed because of medium write error". i get this with max. speed, down to 4x speed burning. it starts burning then stopps and the message appears.
exactly the same happens if i burn photos from iPhoto. also medium write error.
it can't be the blank discs right? these all worked on my old ibook g4 1.33!

External Optical Drive Not Recognized

I've been using a Pioneer DVR111 external firewire drive for the last few months. Until tonight it's performed flawlessly.
I ripped a couple of CDs into iTunes tonight, then when I tried to do another it wouldn't work. The CD wouldn't mount and the drive wasn't recognized by system profiler. I hear the drive spin up when the disc is inserted, but that's about it.
I then tried the disc in the internal drive. Also no response.
So I shut the computer down, unplugged everything and waited a few minutes. I think this is called resetting the PRAM or something like that.
I rebooted from the install disc and rann hardware test. Passed without problem.
I rebooted again and everything seemed fine. Both optical drives were recognized in Profiler.
However, when I inserted a disc in the external drive, it again wasn't recognized. And when I rechecked Profiler, the drive had disappeared. The internal drive, however, seems to have remained okay.
Does anyone have any idea what's going on here? Might this be caused by a faulty external drive, or something else? The external was working fine a couple of hours ago, and I'm a little bit spooked that my internal was acting oddly for a time.

Post the output of lsusb and dmesg.
Do you have an internal optical drive? If not, what's the output of 'cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info'?

Internal Optical Drive not recognized after trying to Bootcamp

Around 3 months ago I tried boot camping my Macbook with Windows 7 but it ended up freezing and I had to restart my computer. When the computer had fully restarted I found that a few things had changed. First, I now had a 70 GB partition called BOOTCAMP but it was basically unusable since the Windows 7 OS was never installed in the partition, and second the Optical Drive wasn't recognized by my computer anymore so it won't work at all and the Windows 7 CD is now stuck in there.
I tried a lot of different ways that I found on the internet to try to eject the CD but nothing has worked. It's not really a huge deal since CDs are starting to become the new floppy disks but it would still be nice to have this working again.
Also, here's the original post that I made back in December. It never got any replies and somehow got moved but I was never able to see where it got moved because whenever I clicked "discussion" in "Branched to a new discussion." I would get a page that said this - "Unauthorized. Access to this place or content is restricted. If you think this is a mistake, please contact your administrator or the person who directed you here." I know the whole post is pretty long so I have a TLDR; at the end of it and I pretty much summarized the problem again at the top of this whole post.
Alright so earlier today I decided to Bootcamp my Macbook and install Windows 7 with a 70GB partition. I was using https://help.apple.com/bootcamp/mac/5.0/help/#/bcmp173b3bf2 and http://www.howtogeek.com/186907/how-to-install-windows-on-a-mac-with-boot-camp/ to help guide me through the process. Everything was running smoothly at first...I had a 32GB memory stick that I used to load the support software onto and I had a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit DVD in my disk drive.
The first problem I ran into was when Bootcamp wanted to download the files onto the memory stick - it wanted me to format the stick. So I went into Disk Utility, clicked on it, went to erase, then formatted it to the same format it was (because it was already FAT) and then it all worked. After getting the support software onto the memory stick the next step was to partition my disk. After doing a TON of research I finally decided that 70GB would be enough for the OS, a game or two, Sony Vegas Pro, and a few small programs. So I dragged the thing to give the new partition 70 GB and pressed install.
Then, the next problem occurred - a message popped up saying "The USB drive connected to this Mac contains a bootable volume. In order to install Windows 7 from the DVD, the Boot Camp Assistant needs to disable this functionality. No information on the drive will be removed, do you want to continue?" I was hesitant at this point to do anything so I googled it and couldn't find much except this thread - Bootable volume on USB flash drive in boot camp. I decided to try it and press continue since according to the thread it would stop me if there was a problem. Once I did I THINK (I can't remember that it did for sure or not) it dismounted the memory stick, which I remember thinking was okay because I could just unplug it and plug it back in after Windows 7 was installed to install the support software (Also, I NEVER removed the memory stick until after a reboot later on). After that Bootcamp began partitioning my hard drive.
About an hour later the blue progress bar had actually filled up to at least 99% (but it looked like 100% to me) but Bootcamp still said "Status: Partitioning Disk" so I left it alone for another 1-2 hours. After that I started getting worried and googled how long this process was supposed to take and found out that this step normally only took a few minutes for most people. At this point I started looking up fixes for this but nothing matched my problem since Bootcamp itself wasn't actually frozen (when I clicked and held on the icon it didn't say "Application not responding") so I decided to check to see if the partition had worked. Then, Disk Utility froze like a few seconds after opening it up so I had to force quit that. My next option was to check under "Storage" in "About this mac" so I tried that and it froze as well. While all this was going on I kept checking back to Bootcamp and it never froze.
Now I was getting extremely worried and with no solutions on Google and no idea what to do I decided to just try and restart my computer and pray to god that it would reboot fine. Luckily, it did...for the most part. After rebooting all my applications seemed to be working fine (I can confirm that Terminal, Disk Utility, System Preferences, System Information, and Safari are all working or at least loading). I also had all my files still on my computer so that was good. Next, I checked Disk Utility to see if the partition had actually worked and it did, or at least it is showing up as "BOOTCAMP" under my main hard drive. Then, I tried using Bootcamp again and this is when I noticed something new - a warning on Bootcamp's first page that wasn't there before, "You need an optical drive to install Windows. Connect an optical drive to your computer. You cannot install Windows with a remote optical drive." I can't guarantee that it wasn't there the first time but I really don't remember it there. After reading that I checked my Desktop for the mounted Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit DVD and it wasn't there. Then, I checked Disk Utility and it wasn't showing up there either. The only things I can see on Disk Utility are my main hard drive with both partitions, my memory stick, and a random dmg file called decryptedFile.dmg (the size of this file is only 15.6mb so I don't think it could be the OS DVD).
So now I am trying to figure out how to get my computer to recognize that it does have an internal optical drive and that there is a DVD inside of it. I looked around on Google to try to find answers but all the regular options to fix this don't work since the computer itself is not realizing it's there. I don't know if this helps to prove that it doesn't realize this but I checked in System Information -> Hardware -> Disk Burning and it says "No disk burning device was found. If the device is external, make sure it's connected and turned on." And since a "Superdrive" can read disks I'm assuming it can burn them to and would be shown under that. (I don't know that much about computers though so I could easily be wrong)
Anyways, sorry for the extreme detail that I went into but I wanted to get as much information about what happened as I possibly could. For those of you who don't have time to read all that I'll put a little summary.
TLDR; Basically, I tried to Bootcamp my Macbook to run Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I ran into a few problems and then Bootcamp wouldn't move on from "Status: Partitioning Disk" so I had to restart my computer. After the restart my Macbook doesn't recognize that it has an internal Superdrive and therefore doesn't realize that there's a Windows 7 Ultimate DVD disk in it. I looked around for answers but none of the simple ones (using key commands on the keyboard and typing something into terminal) worked. Now I'm looking for help to get my computer to realize that it does have a Superdrive inside so I can get the disk out.

In order to troubleshoot this issue where the optical drive does not accept discs, please follow the steps below.
Doesn't accept discs
Be sure to check your disc to make sure it is flat. You can check this by putting the disc upside-down on a flat surface. If the disc is bowed up on any side or in the center, do not use the disc because it might get stuck in the drive. Do not use discs that have anything attached to them or dangling from them (such as "sweeper" or cleaning discs).
If the drive struggles when you put in a disc or stops part-way, carefully look at the disc for labels that may be interfering. If there aren't any raised labels then try putting the disc in a few more times.
Try another disc to see if the issue is being caused by a specific disc.
Make sure you insert the disc far enough for the drive mechanism to activate. You need to insert discs nearly all the way before the drive will activate and pull them in. If you don't completely insert a disc, the drive will reverse and push the disc back out.
Allow the drive one or two seconds to accept the disc while it is fully inserted.
Reset the System Management Controller (SMC).
If the drive repeatedly does not accept discs, contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, or make an appointment with an Apple Retail Store.

New Optical Drive, Not Recognized

New optical drive replaced in a Satellite 5205-S503. The previous drive was recognized, powered up, but recently played nothing. I replaced it with another TEAC DW-224E. This drive powers up when I place a CD in it, but is not being recognized. I did not think I needed drivers because I am using Windows XP Pro. Because it is clearly powering up and spinning a disc, I am assuming that it has been connected properly internally.

Open Device Manager and expand DVD/CD-ROM drives. Can you see the drive there? If so, right-click it and click Uninstall. Reboot to reinstall the driver.

Optical drive not recognized

Ok - I'm trying to work out what the heck has gone wrong with my optical drive.
I think it started from when i updated from 10.5.8 to 10.9.
I had been having trouble reading any disks at all and sat down to try and fix it, when I looked more into it i noticed a few errors that kept popping up.
When I insert any disk it reads for a bit and then just ejects. When i try and look for the disk utility there is no optical drive there.
When i open CDs and DVDs "You can’t open the “CDs & DVDs” preferences pane because it is not available to you at this time. To see this preferences pane, you may need to connect a device to your computer."
In system information - disk burning it says "No disc burning device was found. If the device is external, make sure it’s connected and turned on."
When inserting a movie DVD and opening DVD player
"A valid DVD drive could not be found [-70012]
After inserting a DVD it didn't come out. so there is a dvd stuck in there now.... "sigh"...

YYour drive is probably dead and needs replaced. To get the stuck disk out try restarting while holding the mouse button, if that doesn't work open Terminal and type drutil eject

Optical drive not recognized in system profile after hardware rebuild

This is an old MacBook Pro. Apple call it vintage.
Logic board died, so rather than consign it being a doorstop, I took out the logic board and "cooked" it to reflow the solder. It actually worked!
Just prior to this and just before the logic board completely bit the dust I'd inserted a DVD into the optical drive, where it sat and didn't read, wasn't recognized etc. I was trying to drop back down in OS as Lion was too resource hungry for the old machine, so it was an OS install disk. Panther I think?
So now I've got the logic board working, but I cannot remove the DVD. I tried all the tricks, including Terminal etc. On checking System Profile I noticed that the optical drive isn't even listed now. So my question is, is it possible I missed a connection etc when rebuilding the MBP after replacing the logic board? If so, thoughts on where I should look? Is there a way to "force" the OS to find the optical drive? Any thoughts on what to do?
I can't pull the optical drive as one of the screws is completely stripped and honestly, not sure if the laptop is even worth the cost of a replacement drive anyway.

Ok, that's it. I read a few posts in the "...SuperDrive won't accept my CD.." section. and it seems some people are just swapping optical drives like mad, ready to accept that the kit is crap, and "...oh, well, I sure hope this one works better...".
But one guy had the brains to have a look inside. Turns out dust had accumulated in the drive and on the connectors, and when he cleaned them, and unplugged and replugged them, it worked fine. So that's what I did. Took it out and put it back in. Amazing the stuff I cleared out! I also un- and re-plugged the power cable and the data ribbon at the mutha board and bingo!. We have disk, and I can breathe again.
Recommend to others they pretend they've bought a new drive, do a remove and reinstall and be very fastidious. You may not need a new one after all. I just love it that stuff can still be FIXED!

Slot loading optical drive not recognized.

Recently I replaced a none functioning optical drive in my 15" 1.67 HS PB with 2.0g ram 160hdd. On reboot it will show a grey screen or a ? folder. I have tried everything ( and I mean everything) 2x over. This is what I find:
1) The PB will boot up fine if only either the od or the hdd is connected to the mother board. But not with both drive connected.
2) The PB will boot up with an external PB2 in target disk mode with only the od drive connected. I mentioned this because this allow me to use apple HW test that described the hdd as ID-0.
3) The od is a UJ85J-B panasonic/masushita from owc. Exchanged x2 thinking its defective.
I believe this is a master/slave issue. my question is will the following article apply to my situation.

We have 3 right now having problems. 1 just went into the ITech store to have a CD removed. 1 will not even accept a CD anymore and the other just makes awful noises and scratches the CD. These have been minimally used also. They said the Optical Drive is bad on the 1st one. Of course, we are 1 month past our warranty! I think Apple should be backing this but when I called about it they didn't want to help me. Even saying I had not registered them even though I had documentation from them saying I had. I know the feeling of being ripped off. Our company has purchased 20 of these in the last 1 1/2 years. You think we would get a little bit of help from Apple being we have purchased so many of their products in the last 20 years.

Optical drive not recognized HP DV9910us

This problem has been driving me nuts!! It's a pioneer dr-kd08hb on hp dv9000.
The optical drive dissapeard from my laptop a few months ago. It opens, has power,spins for a bit, but does not read ANY disc.It does not appear in "computer" or "device manger".Only when i click "show hidden" it's there, but there is a message stating that the device is unplugged.
Once in while it would show up then dissapear again. I pulled it out, cleaned the contacts, and still same deal. Come and go.
I had a HD crash, and LUCKILY it worked in time to install windows 7.Right after that it worked for a few days and i thought the problem was solved...... Nope. Vanished again and not coming back!
I deleted upper and lower filters...No go
Unistalled the driver and reinstalled...No go.
Tried "FIX YA"....nothing
Bought a NEW optical drive and it does the same thing.
I'm on my last leg here, and thinking about replacing the optical drive circuit board if not the MOBO itself since i am CONVINCED it's not a software issue anymore.
I've searched the internet high and low for a solution, but have not found a fix that works for my case.

Very common...having a similar issue on a dv9812us. My optical drive works with the BIOS (spins, light flashes, opens by pushing the button) but disappears entirely once windows boots. Not in device manager, not in the computer menu. Mind doesn't even show up when I select "view hidden."

Optical drive not recognized as an ATA device in Apple profiler

The dvd drive is not recognized any more in Apple Profiler (nothing under ATA) and the CD or DVD are not recognised neither. I can hear the drive is working but that's it. The problem happened just after I upgraded to 10.4.10. Any help would be welcome!

You will want to ensure your USB DVDRW drive is properly connected to the Windows 8 VM in question.
To check this you will want to use the Vmware vSphere client to connect to your Vmware ESX/ESXi host.
Next, you will want to edit the settings for your Windows 8 virtual machine and check that you have added a USB controller and then connected the USB device to the controller. This is a manual assignment. If your DVDRW drive you wish to connect is actually
connected via SATA on the motherboard of the host then you will want to go through the same process to ensure the CD/DVD drive of the host has 'connected' and 'connect at power on' selected under settings.

Mac Pro 3.1 Optical Drives not recognized.

My Mac Pro (2008 2 x 2.8 Quad Core) 3.1 running OS X 10.10.1 has always had 2 optical drives. The first an Apple Superdrive as shipped and a second optical dvd/cd drive. Both have worked for years, although in recent tears, the 2nd drive experienced problems where it would not open. Finally it died all together and I removed it. I have added a replacement IDE optical drive and now neither optical drive works or is even recognised by the OS X. My system info shows "No Drives", yet both are installed and connected. I have rebooted many times, I have reinstalled OS X Yosemite, yet both drives are still missing as far as the computer is concerned.
Does anyone know how I may diagnose this problem further, or better still, how can I fix this issue.

After checking connections, I would try a NVRAM reset:

If it still doesn't show, I'd pull it and connect it to a different machine.
If it does't show there, I'd call it dead.
Oh, and as for the jumper, I wouldn't change it without changing the second drive as well.

Optical Drive not recognized by Windows 7

I have a Satellite A305-S6857 that I upgraded to Windows 7 and the BIOS shows that I have an optical drive but Windows doesn't. I've tried deleting filters in regedit, didn't work. I unchecked "hide empty drives" in the view options. I don't what to do. Please help.

I had the same issue before. Was able to fix it by loading the BIOS default setting. You can also try to uninstall it on Device Manager.

Optical Drive not recognized (GT-60)

My dvd drive is no longer recognized on my GT-60 which is now running win 8.1. The drive doesn't respond in windows and isn't listed in the BIOS. The laptops is 10 months old and originally came with windows 8.0.
Is there any troubleshooting I should attempt? I'm not sure how long the problem has been present since I rarely use the DVD, but now I need to use it.

I figured this out. By pushing the door inward the drive started to spin and would allow me to eject. The door has become too loose over time. I'll have to look for a replacement.

Optical Drive Not Recognizing ANYTHING

An interesting little problem. My System Profiler reports having a Combo Drive, and everything looks fine. However, when I put CD's or DVD's in the drive, it takes it, thinks about it for about 10 seconds, and spits it back out again without ever mounting it or anything. If I insert a blank CD, it takes it, does not recognize it, and keeps it. When I try to eject, it shows the eject icon pop up and fade away, but doesn't actually eject.
Tried restarting, resetting PRAM, no good...
Anyone have any thoughts?

I've tried all that... they don't seem to do the trick. I did notice that when I insert a disc, it seems to not even spin the disc at all. It inserts, makes a few mechanical noises (the normal "loading" sounds), waits, and spits it out.
I have a feeling a trip to the Genius Bar might be on the way...
