Optical drive picks and chooses when it will work

For some reason, the optical drive on our Mac has been acting weird for about 3 months. It will only read my husband's games (Civ IV and Command and Conquer). It won't read any of our kids' games, my CDs, or any of our backup CD-Roms. It also won't burn any CD-roms. I haven't checked recently, but a couple of weeks ago my 7 y.old was watching Harry Potter on it, so I guess the DVD function still works.
I'm assuming that we need a new drive. Space on my desk is at a premium, so I'd like to find something internal rather than external. I don't burn disks very often--usually just backup disks and photos a few times a year. We don't burn DVDs, at least not yet!
Is my hypothesis correct in that the drive is kaput? If so, what should I look for in a new drive? Are there any especially good drives? And is an internal drive a good choice (assuming that external drives come with more bells and whistles)?
I have installed memory upgrades several times over the years , so I'm pretty comfortable working inside a Mac. (Eeep, 1st Mac Love was in 1988 <--dating myself). Is this a job that I could do myself?
Any help is welcome!
Thank you--
Jane Healy

Sure sounds dead to me. If it won't play or record at all, that's a very bad sign. The lens cleaning trick may work, but you should have noticed a lot of skipping before it got to the point you are at now if it was just the lens. But that's definitely what you want to do first, to be sure.
Installing an optical drive is not difficult. OWC has a great series of videos on how to do so at this link: http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/installation.cfm
Pioneer drives are very popular with Macs and for good reason. The current version is the 112, and has received generally good reviews (OWC carries the 112, although New Egg has a cheaper price. Both are bare drives - not retail versions, but you can just reuse the screws and cables you have). xlr8yourmac maintains a user database of people's experiences with different drives in different machines at this link:
http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso
It's an excellent source of info. If you want to go with a retail package, it will cost more. Best Buy carries the 112, but Pioneer gives it a different number in the retail version (it's the 1810).The retail package will give you some windows software and screws and a cable. Now that I think of it, I don't know if your machine has a 40 or 80 wire cable; you'd need the latter to get full dvd burning speed from the drive. If you want to go external, I just got a Samsung 184 and it works beautifully, on sale at Best Buy but sale ends today. A combo drive like the Philips will only run about $10 cheaper than a dvd burner.
Look to spend about $40 for a bare drive, $65 for a boxed version, $80 to $100 for an external.

  • IMac picks and chooses what DVDs will work in Super Drive

I just bought a early 2009 iMac used from a friend and he had wiped the computer clean using the Mac OS X disc. He had forgot to install the apps disc with iLife and when I tried to use it, it spit it out. The iWork disc worked fine but it is in totally perfect condition. The app disc was just barely scuffed up.
I tried a movie DVD and it still spit it out. Putting several music CDs in that were in horrible condition however read fine. So has anyone else had this problem? Is there any kind of solution to this? It worked fine for my friend before he sent it and now it only works with CDs, and the one iWork DVD. I also just tried another random movie DVD that is actually pretty scratched up and it took it just fine. I have tried the PRAM thing, but not sure if there is a way to see what the DVD drive is doing or clear it all out?

iMac SuperDrives have always been picky.
Try cleaning your DVDs & CDs, as per > How to Clean a DVD or CD Disc ?
Then perhaps the SuperDrive's Lenes, with a > CD and DVD Lens Cleaning Kit

  • Optical Drive dead - what external CD/DVD will work?

My three year old white 13" Macbook has a dead optical drive after I dropped it last month. Which external drive will work, especially if I want to do a full restore from the external drive?
    Thanks much!
    Zake

    Hi ZDarton,
I'm a big fan of LaCie, I have several of their external HDs and I've used their external optical drives before for CD replication. Their prices are pretty fair, their build quality is very good and my experiences with their customer service department is always solid. Here's some options from their product line:
    Desktop "grade" - http://www.lacie.com/us/products/range.htm?id=10014
    Portable "grade" - http://www.lacie.com/us/products/range.htm?id=10037

  • How does one do updates when your service provider is s-l-o-w??                     According to the counter, our computer needs almost 20 hrs. of updates, is there a way to pick and choose which ones are downloaded?

We have a "Rocket Hub" and our download times vary greatly.  My husband's computer, Snow Leopard OS, shows he has about 20 hrs. of updates to download.  Is there a way to pick and choose so we can catch up?

Nope, because files sizes, machines, software installed are different and you can't control what needs to be installed first before others work.
Apple is all Internet, you should see Lion users, they can't reinstall their OS at all without a Internet connection. (or pay $69 for the Lion USB key) and then there still the updates to deal with.
So take a ride, to a Apple Store early in the morning before their network gets overloaded (what a way to get you in the door and buy more junk uh?) fully update to 10.6.8.
Good thing about Snow Leopard, not much more in large updates coming for that verision, in fact they will stop completely come next spring or so when 10.8 is released.
Unless you live in a wealthy area with broadband, your a nobody in Apple's viewpoint.
You could get a 3G laptop connect card, hopefully that will give you enough to download your updates but they cost a fortune.
If I could just provide you with update disk I would, but I can't, machines are different.
Call Apple and ask for a update disk, perhaps they have a solution
Once you do get all your updates, Carbon Copy Clone your boot drive to a external drive, it's hold the option key bootable duplicate.
    Donationware too.

  • I am out of space on my Macbook Air and have a Time Machine Backup. I want to complete reset my mac, but wonder if I can pick and choose what I restore to my computer? Can I also use my time machine backup and external storage as well?

I am out of space on my Macbook Air and have a Time Machine Backup. I want to complete reset my mac, but wonder if I can pick and choose what I restore to my computer? Can I also use my time machine backup as external storage as well for the files I don't need everyday?

If you are using "Restore from Time Machine Backup" option from OS X Recovery, you can only choose from the broad categories presented.
... Can I also use my time machine backup as external storage as well for the files I don't need everyday?
To be clear, if you are asking if you can use the volume containing your Time Machine backup to store additional, non-Time Machine files, the short answer is yes.
It's not a good idea though, since the Time Machine backup will eventually fill all available space, after which it begins to remove old, "expired" backups to make room for newer ones. The presence of additional files doesn't change that fact, and Time Machine will not erase them, but you will encounter a dilemma should you want to store additional files on that volume when there is no remaining space. You will have to make room for them on your own, by deleting existing files. Furthermore, since Time Machine cannot back up its own volume, those additional files will not be backed up by Time Machine.
The easy solution for what you describe is to purchase additional external storage. External USB hard disk drives have become very inexpensive; about $55 will buy a perfectly suitable 1 TB drive.
You can also choose to replace your MacBook Air's internal storage with a larger capacity one. Look for a suitable replacement from OWC / MacSales:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/Air-Retina
That gets a little more expensive but it is the optimum solution.

  • Import = Crash; Pick and choose?

I have about 30 or so new photos that I want to import, and it looks like it's about to finish, but just before it does, iPhoto crashes. I've used this camera with the app. before with no problem - it only just started occurring yesterday. Also, how can I see the content of my camera before importing? I'm not even seeing it on my desktop or in the Finder.
Any help is GREATLY appreciated!!! Thanks!

That doesn't seem to be the problem... I plugged my camera into my friend's mac and it worked perfect - I could even see the photos before I imported them and it allowed me to pick and choose. I was then able to import them from an external drive. Another persisting problem is that now, whenever I open iPhoto, it now says that I have loads (hundreds!) of unimported photos that it asks if I want to import. I have to click "no" otherwise it will again crash. So each time I open iPhoto, the number increases. I think I may go into an apple store unless there are any other suggestions?

  • Can I pick and choose from my ITunes collection and split them up across devices

I am thinking of getting an iPod Classic.  Will I be able to transfer some of the albums I have purchased on my iPad2 to the iPod Classic.  Would I have to transfer everything, or can I pick and choose?
I am a non technical person so don't k ow about synchronising devices or just transferring stuff to another one.

A classic will be no good for you then. While an iPad, iPhone or iPod touch can, in principle, be used independently, an iPod classic can only be loaded up from an iTunes library running on a computer.

  • How can I pick and choose what IMAP folders are show in Mail?...

I am using IMAP and it works fine. Except "Sent" messages are saving on the server to "Send Messages" however I cannot see it on the list of IMAP folders in Mail. I see other folders, Save, etc. ones I created, just can't make the folder on the server show up in Mail.
If I go into the "Account Info" window in Mail, it does not show it either. Even though it is on the server and Mail is saving sent messages to it as it should.
Any ideas? How can I pick and choose what IMAP folders are show in Mail?
    Thanks
    Frank

Yes it is using the sent mailbox but just does not show it. MS Mail on Vista has a "show/hide" IMAP folder screen, I wish Mac Mail has this..would be perfect.
I was thinking about deleting the account, and adding it, that would reset it I am sure. However I have my mail set to keep a copy locally for off-line viewing (option in preferences under Account) and I get the sense that if I delete the IMAP account and add it, it will download a copy of each piece of mail (for example my inbox) again and I will have two of everything. Does this make sense? Do you think this will happen?

  • Can I pick and choose what to clone with CCC

I bought a 2009 17" MBP "used", and it has a ton of files from the other guy on it, everywhere. For some reason it only has a 250 gig HD. I thought 500 was standard, maybe he changed that out. Anyway, I was hoping to totally clean out his junk and install a larger hardrive. My plan is to clone it onto the new hardrive. But I don't want to clone all of his junk.
Can I pick and choose what to clone with Carbon Copy? I do not have the OS (10.6.8) install discs so. I really just want to put the OS back on the machine then I can load whatever I want and the machine would be clean.

Yes. Carbon Copy Cloner allows you to choose which files you want to clone to an external drive. Have a look at the developer's site -> http://bombich.com/features
