Optical drive reads audio cd's and burned dvd's, but not commercial dvds

I just upgraded my macbook hard drive, doing a clean install of Mac OS X on the drive in an external enclosure, then copying the remaining files, doing all the software updates, and swapping out my old drive. Everything works so far, except... the DVD player will no longer play commercial dvd's (movies and tv). The drive hardware seems ok, in that it reads audio CD's (through iTunes) and DVD's of tv shows burned on my home recorder... which suggests that the DVD player software is ok, too. Did a setting get changed in my software, where it thinks I'm putting in the wrong regional dvd type? The disk goes in, spins and makes noise, and, after a short while ejects out.

Here's what I get:
MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E:
Firmware Revision: ZF1E
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

  • Help, i cant burn dvds. I can watch a dvd or burn a cd but not a dvd

I have an intel 17 inch imac and a matshita dvd-r uj-85j. when I go to burn a dvd I get a “Untitled DVD” can’t be burned because the disc is read-only and can’t be modified (error code 0x80020042). But that is BS. Can you please help me?

Sorry if this is obvious, but reasons why the DVD might not burn include:
    1. The DVD burning speed is at the maximum speed of the drive.
    2. The DVD is of low quality. Never burn discs from anything other than Ritek, Taiyo, or Verbatim. Don't apply sticky labels to the DVD, and don't use markers. Buy DVDs that are stored in jewelcases, not spindles. Follow the standards set here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2446
These issues are all platform independent.
    3. The DVD was already burnt before (multi-session DVDs as far as I know are only possible for data DVDs, not movie DVDs, though double sided DVDs allow a burn on each side).
    4. The capacity of the burn file is at the maximum of the capacity of the disk (try a smaller capacity).
    5. The burning software is old. Make sure the version you are using is tested with your operating system version.

  • Optical drives reads but wont write after swap

hello everyone, I bought an iMac G3 450MHz that had had a 'superdrive' fitted. It both read and wrote CD's and DVDs. I tested it out and it worked just fine, I even made a back up copy of my Tiger DVD with it. I wanted to put the optical drive into my beloved Flower Power 600 iMac CD-RW so ,to make sure all the drive cables etc weren't disturbed, I just removed the whole caddy with the HDD plus the optical drive plus all the connecting cables, and popped it into my Flower Power. It booted up fine so I loaded (via carbon copy cloner) the contents of my original HDD. Now, when I look in system profiler, the optical drive shows up as a read/write but will only read discs. If I put in a blank disc the iMac's OS doesn't see the blank disc. Funnily enough my copy of Toast does see it and Toast launches itself. As I want to be able to burn disc images using Disk Utility this is a bit of a problem for me. I might just add, as it may be of some interest, that whoever fitted the superdrive had the HDD jumpers set to Slave but this was how it was when it worked perfectly in the 450MHz it came in so this was how I left them. The other little problem is the iMac won't sleep but I can live with that.

The reason your hard drive is set to slave is because it shares the IDE bus with the optical drive. With the stock optical drive, the optical drive is set to slave and the hard drive is set to master. However, that superdrive is probably hardwired to master, so the hard drive needs to be slave. As long as one drive is slave and the other drive is master, it should work fine.
Are you using the exact same system installation from the 450 on the 600? If not, there was probably some special driver installed to enable the all the superdrive features. Toast is a third-party app that is designed to work with many different optical drives, so such a driver would be built into the software, which would explain why it works (and Disk Utility does not).
What company sold (and installed) this superdrive?

  • DVD/CD optical drive is recognized only occasionally and temporarily

Hi, I recently bought an ASUS Essentio desktop model CG8350 running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. My DVD/CD optical drive is not consistently being recognized. I've made few changes to the computer and have even tried reinstalling Windows (system recovery, factory settings), but no luck. The curious thing is that after booting up I can occasionally temporarily see the D:\ optical drive listed under My Computer or under Device Manager, but after a few seconds or about a minute after restarting or trying to read a disk, this disappears and the optical drive is no longer shown. I would take it back to Best Buy I bought it for repair, but unfortunately that was in the U.S. and I've since moved to Canada. It's frustrating that Best Buy Canada won't honor service warranties for items bought from Best Buy U.S. If there's something I can try in order to avoid shipping it off to ASUS or back to Best Buy U.S. (at my expense, and potential loss of PC for a few weeks), I would much prefer that. These are the things I have tried so far: 1) opening it up and checking/re-plugging the power cable to the optical drive and the data cable between the optical drive and motherboard. All cables seemed fine. The drive ejects and spins a little bit when a disk is inserted, but neither a blank CD/DVD nor a commercial CD are recognised after insertion. 2) looking at the registry to try the "delete UpperFilters" and "delete LowerFilters" trick that I've seen posted several times. Since the computer had Windows 7 from the start (was not upgraded), these entries were not visible under the suggested registry subkey. 3) under boot options, I've selected "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement" and have booted up. The optical drive showed up under My Computer and/or Device Manager for a few seconds or a minute, but then vanished. 4) disabled integrity checks: I've pasted "bcdedit /set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS" into the Run window. After restarting, the optical drive is again occasionally visible, but only for a short period after which it disappears. 5) following a tip on one website, I tried shutting off and unplugging the data cable between optical drive & motherboard, restarting the computer so Windows could "see" there was actually no optical drive connected, then shutting off and connecting the data cable again and restarting. no luck. 6) I've run the Microsoft Support Fixit executable under "Your CD or DVD drive can't read or write media". The first time I ran this, it ran for about 5-10 minutes, but didn't diagnose a problem. The second time I tried to run it (after the Windows 7 re-install), is said my CD/DVD drive was not detected, so didn't run. 7) I've tried built-in Windows diagnostics and ASUS diagnostics, but they didn't help much. 8) I've updated ny BIOS to the most recent version. I've now run out of ideas and can't find any other suggestions on previous troubleshooting searches. The observation of the drive occasionally being seen for a few seconds/minute after start-up before disappearing seems like it might be a good clue, but I'm not sure how to interpret this. I did get it to play an audio CD a couple hours ago, but after trying to use my drive for something else after that, it's right back into the situation of not being consistently recognized, except sometimes immediately after booting up and then only for a short period. Any help or suggestions you have will be very very welcome -- thank you.

Honestly since it was recalled due to the sandy bridge recall anyways, it is going to have to go to asus eventually so I would just have them fix both in one shot. The Canada and U.S. support number is the same and I'm sure they could fix both issues at once to save you time: 1-866-625-9873

  • EMac optical drive: Reads but ceased writing.  I get "Sense key=MEDIUM ERROR, Sense Code=0x0C, WRITE ERROR.  Drive is Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-127D.

eMac optical drive: reads fine but has ceased writing.  One day it's working fine, burning DVDs, then after repeated attempts stops copying and gives the following error message:  "Sense key=MEDIUM ERROR, Sense Code=0x0C, WRITE ERROR".  Drive is Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-127D.  Is this a software issue or is the drive half dead?  Get the same result with either Popcorn or Toast 10.

Are you using Roxio Toast? That error seems to be discussed a lot in the Roxio forums. Scroll down this thread:

  • Trying to get my fcp project to burn to dvd at the highest quality? Ive used compressor and then tried to put it in dvdsp put its not working. I am having problems with the audio or when i burn it , i cant play the dvd? any help would be appreciated

I suspect you are attempting to burn an HD DVD, which will not play on a DVD player...
But if you provide more details such as the settings you are applying in Compressor, then we would be able to provide you more accurate information.
How are you adding the files to Compressor?
In FCP, what are your footage properties (command-9) and sequence settings (command-0)

  • When apple no longer includes an optical drive how are you going to burn an itunes playlist

when apple no longer includes an optical drive how are you going to burn an itunes playlist

Well, I don't want to buy an optical drive if I buy a new Mac without one. However, iTunes will not allow "burning" a playlist to anything except a real optical drive.
Now, I am not running Mountain Lion so I don't know if iTunes for Mountain Lion allows it or not - could someone please let me know if it is possible.
For me, on Snow Leopard, I cannot find a way to burn, create, duplicate - whatever you want to call it - a playlist to a virtual drive, a USB drive - nothing but a physical drive.
It just makes me wonder if iTunes provides (will provide) an alternative when there is no physical drive included.

I'd start with the following document, with one modification. At step 12 after typing GEARAspiWDM press the Enter/Return key once prior to clicking OK. (Pressing Return adds a carriage return in the field and is important.)

  • IMac will not play the DVD that I have made on imovie and burned on iMac SuperDrive  ?? (DVD plays fine on household DVD player and also play fine in Toshiba laptop ) Why not on the iMac - anyone know???

iMac will not play the DVD that I have made on imovie and burned on iMac SuperDrive  ?? (DVD plays fine on household DVD player and also plays fine on Toshiba laptop ) Why not on the iMac - anyone know???

There are many reasons this could be the case but whether an optical disc can be read or not is a function of:
The reflective media layer of the disc
    Whether the burned disc was a DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW
The brand, model, and production lot of the disc
The specific frequency of the Write lasers that burned the disc
The specific frequency of the Read lasers that are attempting to read the disc
Are the Read lasers in the drive working (it is common for one set of lasers in a drive to fail while others continue to work)
How old are the Write and Read drives (laser frequencies change with age)
Is there dust on the read laser
Is there dust on the read lens
    etc.
At one time it was estimated that fewer than 80% of all burned discs were readable in 90% of the drives. That has, I believe improved over time but at the same time it seems the faillure rate of lasers in the drives has increased but that may simply be the result of how many different read and write lasers there are in today's superdrives. Fortunately todays drives are a lot less expensive the replace -- now that Apple no longer installs optical drives in their computers.

Failed while scanning for CD / DVD drives, error 2380.
Error while opening iTunes CD driver.  This could be caused by a corrupted iTunes file or a conflict with other older CD burning applications, either currently installed or previously installed and uninstalled incorrectly.
With that one, I'd start with solution 3 from the following document:

  • Scripts works in Simulator and Apple DVD player but not on TV

I have a basic project with two different tracks.
The first one is video and audio. Plays "as is".
The second has video, two audio and one subtitle. Depending on which button, the second Track should be played with different audio and with/without subtitles.
(I use GPRM 1 to set the subs stream, GPRM 2 for the audio and GPRM 3 for menu button navigation).
On the second Track I have a pre-script that sets the streams depending on the value of GPRM 1 and 2.
Works fine in Simulator and in Apple DVD player, but not on the stand-alone player.
Any idea what might be the issue here?
    in short:
Button 1: Play Track 1 "as is" (audio 1, no subs)
Button 2: Play Track 2, audio 1, subs on
Button 3: Play Track 2, audio 2, subs off
Button 4: Play Track 2, "as is" (audio 1, subs off)
Menu button and End Jump should go to the corresponding menu button.
    Many thanks for your help.

It is part personal preference, part artistic, part what makes the user experience the best so there may not be one "right" answer and I have often made menus one way than changed them when viewing the DVD for something that seemed to work better.
Looking at you description I started playing with some ideas in my head and started typing them, then changed what I was writing
It sounds like you want chapter selections for both track 1 and track 2? If so it may make sense to have the initial menu have Track 1 and Track 2 buttons which then link to sub menus where there is "Play All," selections for each section of each movie and one last button for the preferences.
Alternatively you could also place the preferences selection button on the main menu, though since Track 1 does not sound like it really has preferences you need to make sure that users do not become confused and think they have turned something on/off and are not seeing these options when they thought they selected them when they play back Track 1.
Also with 6 to 8 chapter markers you may be getting close to the point where scripting could make it easier if your selections are just to play the sections - in other words for track 2 four stories take care of the combinations Audio 1/Sub Off, Audio 1 Subs On, Audio 2 Subs Off, Audio 2 Sub On. If the chapter selection starts the track a scene then plays through you can target chapter markers in the story so 4 stories takes care of it. If you are just playing sections you would need 4 x 6 or 8 chapters - 24 or 32 stories roughly. But it is actually fairly quick to do - just set up the intial Play All with all subtitles and audio selections unchecked except for "1" then copy from there. Probably should take under 10-15 minutes or so
Put a real quick thing together for a quick view of the tracks. I can flesh it out more if you like.
    http://www.dvdstepbystep.com/081107Sub.dmg
The main menu will be the title menu, then the sub-menus (including the set up menus) can be placed in the same VTS as the applicable tracks which can help a bit with DVD performance speed. Since there is 6 to 8 chapter markers on a track each of the main sub-menus would have 8-10 buttons which can work in the design.

  • USB super drive for a MacPro retina. It recognizes CDs but not DVDs.

I bought a new USB super drive for a MacPro retina. It recognizes CDs but not DVDs. I am in region 1 and my DVDs are all region 1. This is the second drive so the problem seems to be in the computer. The problem is the same with battery power or AC adaptor. I  downloaded Adobe flash before I bought the USD super drive. Could this be the problem? Any suggestions? Thanks.

    MBP refers to Macbook Pro
Do the DVD spit out right away? (indicates a bad loader mech)
OR do the DVD spit out after several seconds (indicates a dirty laser diode lens) ?

Wow, Karan Taneja, you've just embarrassed yourself on a worldwide support forum.  Not only is your post ridiculous and completely inappropriate for a technical support forum, but it also shows your ignorance as to whom you think the audience is.  Apple is not here.  It's users, like you.
If you would have spent half the time actually reading the Terms of Use of this forum that YOU agreed to by signing up to post, as you did composing that usesless, inappropriate post, you (and the rest of us on this forum) would have been much better off.
