Optical Drive rejects Install Disk!

Practically all disks will work in my drive, except for the Install disk! I need to do a system repair! I've even sent it to a certified Apple Repair centre, where they replaced the drive, but the new drive won't take it either!
Is there anyway around this?

I wonder if you may have a faulty install disc? If so, perhaps Apple will supply you with a replacement. Call Apple with your serial number and ask.
Good luck!

  • Optical drive rejecting most disks

As of late, my optical drive has been increasingly hit-or-miss with accepting disks (DVD or CD). Often times, when I insert a disk, the drive attempts to read it, unsuccessfully, for about 10 seconds, spinning up and then stopping multiple times, before finally rejecting and ejecting the disk. At first, this only happened with a single DVD that was very scratched up anyway, so I didn't think it a major problem. However, my drive has over time started rejecting more and more disks until now, when my drive won't even accept blank CDs, and I'm lucky if I can get an audio CD to read properly, regardless of how much it has or has not been used. There are even some disks that will go in one day but might be rejected another, but seeing as some disks that my computer accepts are more scratched up than others which it rejects, I really don't know what to think anymore.
    Help?

They sell optical drive cleaners, it's a cd with small brushes that clean the lens of the laser inside the actual optical disc drive. I'd start by trying to clean it with one of these.

  • Mac Mini Will not boot from external drive or install disk

    Hi,
I just bought a new 2.0 ghz mac mini 1 gb ram. 120gb hdd.
I have a separate external HDD attached and wanted to boot from this. It works with my MBP and IMAC.
When i plug it into the Mac Mini and start up with Option key. It recognizes it.
I then click on it. It automatically reboots.... then grey screen comes on. It goes black after about 10 seconds. then boots into original operating system.
I also tried to use the MAC install Disk, thinking it might be a corruption in the shipped software. It does the same thing.
I have MAC Install DVD on an external drive too. Same issue.
I partitioned the HDD and installed a copy of the Mac install disk onto that with disk utility... Same thing grey screen, then black then back to original operating system.
Not sure what is going on?
    thanks
    Chris

    Hi,
    Thanks.
    It is running 10.5.8.
I am trying to boot up an external drive with 10.5.8 on it. It works on my Macbook Pro which is running 10.5.8, runs on my IMAC running SL. But doesnt work on the mac mini?
It had been running SL, however there are a number of programs I have like Windows Live Sync which are not yet compatable with SL so i downgraded to 10.5.6 which came with the Mac Mini then loaded all updates.
It seems to just go into an auto reboot as soon as i click on it.
i thought it might be the firmware? Is it possible to downgrade them and then re-install?
    I have reset the PRAM.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Help!  Why is Macbook not starting, making clicking sounds, and rejecting install disk??

I was working on my Macbook (OS 10.4.11) when the screen froze.  I forced a shutdown.  When I try to power it up again, I get a blank screen (not sure if gray or blue; looks sort of in between) and hear clicking noises. Eventually, a flashing question mark appears.
I found a post on this problem that said the hard drive was looking for instructions to start up (hence the clicking noises) and an Apple article about possible solutions, <http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1440>, but none of the steps worked.
I then booted up again, inserted Install Disk 1 for Tiger, and forced a shutdown again so that I could boot up with "C" held down see if I could solve the problem from the Uilities menu on the Install Disk.  However, when I pressed the power button to start up again, the computer just spit out the Install Disk (even with "C" held down).
Can anyone tell me (1) what the problem seems to be with the computer and/or the CD drive; (2) whether a low-tech type like me might be able to fix it if I can get the Install Disk to run, or whether I just have to take it to my local Mac shop?  The computer is no longer under warranty, so getting it repaired will probably be expensive.
Thanks so much for any good advice out there!

  • MacMini Lack of Optical Drive To Install Windows 8

I just purchased a new MacMini. No optical drive. How can I download Windows 8 and Parallels 8 so they can be installed on my hard drive? Thanks.

You don't need an optical drive.  Post on the Parallels forums:  http://forums.parallels.com

  • Optical Drive Rejecting Everything

My optical drive was working perfectly well yesterday. Put in a movie, watched it, ejected it, no problem. Today, no matter what DVD I put in, the computer tries to read the disc for about ten seconds, then ejects it. The DVD Player Icon does not come up. The discs are very clean, and this problem is happening with CDs as well. While it's trying to read the disc, I hear this soft, yet pronounced ticking sound coming from the optical drive.
Is this something I have to send in to Apple? Any help would be appreciated.

Repair your permission by open application folder > utilities > disk utility > first aid tab > repair permission.
update your hardware and software, and do another repair permission after that.
IF problem persist, visit apple store nearest you and let them check it for you.
    Good Luck.

  • Installing new hard drive without install disk

I just recently purchased a 500gb 7200rpm 2.5" seagate momentus for my macbook and my install disk doesn't work. Is there anyway to get OS X off my old hard drive onto my new one?

Why doesn't the install disc work?
Most drives are pre-formatted to work with windows.
Is your new drive formatted for Mac use? That's OSX Extended (Journaled).

  • Erasing Hard Drive Using Install Disks?

I am selling one of my older Macbooks to someone soon. I was curious if using the install disks to erase the hard drive would be a secure way to erase? Any suggestions to make this process quick and secure? Thanks!

So erasing from the install disk is a secure way to clear the hard drive? I just don't want anyone recovering my files.
There are some things that you just can't do from a system drive. One is erase the system volume by itself, and the other is to repair a volume by itself (although I heard rumors that it might have changed to some degree). If you wipe the drive, you're basically leaving it without an operating system.
And yeah - erasing from the system disc is secure. If you want maximum security, then you have it to a 7-pass erase or greater. I forgot exactly what the options are, but the last time I checked it was a 7-pass and another setting with more passes. What this will do is alternate writing 0s then 1s then 0s, etc until 7 passes erasing the drive with the same data. This is often nicknamed a "government wipe" because a multi-pass erase is claimed to be required for US governement contractors getting rid of hard drives that once contained US gov't information. This is in a manner which even espionage agencies might have difficulty trying to recover.

  • Optical Drive Bay Hard Disk Drive Caddy

    Hi,
I have an old Compaq Presario v2036AP Notebook PC.
I would like to replace it's optical drive with new Hard Disk. I have tried to find a compatible caddy for the same but was not able to find any
Is there any way I can add another HDD to my laptop?
I do not want to use any external disk.
Also, if possible could anyone help me in identifying that what type of caddy drive I may require (SATA to SATA or PATA to SATA, etc.)
    Thanks for your help

Definitely upgrade memory to at least 16 GB. Consider upgrading the video card to a 650M. For the rest it looks good, if you can live with a super glossy screen.

  • Need Optical Drive To Install Windows 7 With Lion?

The latest support article regarding Boot Camp 4.0 states that only Windows 7 can be used for new installs using OS X Lion. Further on, the article states a "compatible external optical drive" must also be used. They don't mention exactly what compatible means or the general requirements of the optical drive. I was thinking of purchasing a new Mac Mini but I would also need to have something more for Windows 7 to run. Who could I ask about this "compatible external optical drive"?

Windows on Mac is never going to be 100%, close, and for many, the hardware today 2011 is powerful enough to use VirtualBox and whatever guest OS.

  • Optical drive doesn't disks from a particular brand

I am trying to burn some video files to 10 DVD's, but my optical drive doesn't recognize 4 of the DVD's I use (which are all of the same brand and freshly bought) - and had a very difficult time with the other 6. DVD's of other brands he reads and burns fine as well as my rewritable CD which I've used a million and one times and is scratched all over.
The 10 DVD's work fine in the Windows PC and Laptop I have, just not in my MacBook...
Is there any way I can get the drive to be able to burn the other DVD's?
Below the stats of the optical drive with one of the 6 burned DVD's in it:
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E:
    Firmware Revision: ZF1E
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
    Media:
    Type: DVD-RW
    ID: INFOMEDIA
    Blank: No
    Erasable: Yes
    Overwritable: Yes
    Appendable: No
    Write Speeds: 1x, 2x

Other than trying to burn at a lower speed I suspect that there is little you can do. You could try a third-party disc burning application like Toast but that would be a lot more expensive that just trying several different types of media.
If you have an Apple Store nearby then you could probably take your disc to the store and try them in another MacBook at the store (it looks like you are using RW media, so you could rewrite them after these tests).
Of course, if after trying a few different brands you still find that you are having problems then you may just have a hardware problem with your MacBook's Superdrive. I suppose that you could also have a software conflict. Have you tried creating a new user account to see if the disc can be burned there (as a test)?

  • HELP!  Drive rejects Install disc and Tiger disc.

I just upgraded my hard drive and the only thing that shows up on my display is a small icon that alternates between the smiling 2 colored face and a question mark inside of a folder. When I insert a disc it seems like the drive will try to read it and then rejects it. Every once in a while a small edge of the disc will be spit out and then go back inside again. I've tried to insert the install disc and the Tiger OS X 10.4 disc with the same results.
    HELP!

Do you have a second Mac that you could use? If you put your Mac in Target Disk Mode (Hold T on boot up) then you can connect it to another Mac via Firewire and you can put Tiger back on it.

  • Disk Drive Rejects all Disks

I started to make a DVD from a short video I've made but my drive just, immediately, rejected it. I tried another one and the same thing. I then tried a blank CD, rejected, a music CD and then a fulm DVD. All where rejected. I've closed everything down, switched off over neght and the same thing the next day.
    Has anyone any ideas please.

    Thanks for your reply Michael.
I did try option-command-p-r but I could not get it to change anything. Then, I thought I would check the warranty.
I am a lucky person, it is still under extended warranty until 18th of this month. So I have booked it in to our local Apple shop, next Tuesday.
    I will post the outcome.
    Thanks again.

  • Brtand New Mac Pro Internal Optical Drive Won't Work

Actually, this is a two parter. My new Mac Pro internal optical drive rejects every disk I insert. It won't read anything. Should I get it replaced? Part two: I have an external Sony optical drive which was working up until yesterday. Today, I was going to go through some disks and now THAT drive is rejecting everything. I had it connected via USB and changed it to a 400 to 800 firewire. I tried to read some disks again and still they get rejected. What can I do to correct these problems?

I am having the exact same problem with my mac pro since upgrading to 10.5.7 neither of my drives will read CD or DVD and it states that no burning software was found in the system profiler
