Optical Drive Ribbon Clamp. Help!

While upgrading my hard drive on my own, i managed to break what I think is the "locking bar" part of the ribbon clamp for my optical drive. Where can I find a new one, how can I fix it, or are there any other solutions for my problem?
I have an iBook g4 12-inch.
Thanks.

You may be able to contact the home company of these guides to see
if you can get just the part by itself you need: http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/
Or other companies that specialize in iBook and PowerBook repairs would
be the kinds of places to check, such as this page to send an email inquiry:
http://www.wegenermedia.com - or call. They have parts for many models.
You may also find they have a good customer relations service.
Hopefully this helps.

  • 915P Combo not seeing optical drives in WinME- HELP!

I just purchased a new computer from Cyberpower with an MSI 915P Combo motherboard and no OS installed (though I'm on my old computer now, an 866MHz P3 running WinXP on an IDE HD).  I have a SATA HD installed in the new machine and a DVD-ROM and DVD-RW drive.  I installled WinME only because the WinXP install disk that I have will not run from the DOS prompt I get when booting with a Win98 startup floppy.  It must be run from within Windows.  Upon finishing up my installation of WinME, I received the following message:
    Quote
"Your multi-function device (Standard Dual PCI Controller) has some child devices using 32-bit drivers and others using compatibility-mode drivers.  This configuration is not supported, so your computer has been halted to prevent corruption.
After you restart your computer, Windows will use compatibility-mode drivers for each child device attached to this multi-function device.  If you want to use 32-bit drivers, you may be able to obtain an updated driver for the device that caused the problem by contacting your hardware manufactured, or you can disable the device.
    Press any key to continue"
…and WinME doesn't recognize the DVD-ROM or RW drives (the IDE controllers are not functioning when I go to the device manager- the yellow ! appears).  So my goal is to install WinXP.  Booting from a startup floppy, I AM able to access the DVD-ROM and RW drives, but as I said, I cannot run my XP install CD from a DOS prompt.  Is there a solution for me short of buying a full-install version of XP that will install from a DOS prompt?
Please, if someone can give a full explanation (I’m pretty good with computers, but I wouldn’t call myself a computer “expert”… though I DO know how to go into the BIOS to make changes, even if I don’t know everything I’m doing there), it would be very much appreciated.  Thank you.

Thanks to those who wrote and helped me.  I think I'm good for now :-)

  • I've lost my macbook pro mid 2010 optical drive ribbon cable. What do I do now?

I had kept it somewhere as my SSD bracket was about to arrive. But I lost it as I was moving out of my apartment

The cables are not that expensive at an Apple store and it will be replaced for you as well.  Consider that option.
    Ciao.

  • Is it possible to use a small cd in the optical drive slot of an iMac?

I'm trying to install RescuePro on my Mac, but I'm afraid the small cd will get stuck inside. I tried copying it onto a regular cd-rw using a Windows based pc, but it came up as a ".INK " file on my Mac and I couldn't open it. Help!

    Hi jeris529,
As Niel has suggested, you should not use a non standard disk in your slot loading iMac.
Further information about disk compatibility or usage can be found in the Apple Knowledge Base Article "Using nonstandard discs in optical drives".
    hope that helps some,

  • Optical Drives Not Found/Not Working

    Hello everyone,
I'm having trouble getting my optical drives working. They are both the same make and model, and they both have power (open and close) but they aren't recognized by the system. I installed Arch a couple of weeks ago, after the init scripts/systemd change, so nothing was broken there (I'm not sure if that would even have anything to do with it.
I've done some research to see if I could find any drivers/firmware, but all of things I've found are only for Windows. The optical drives do work in Windows. I have added myself to the 'optical' group, and dmesg | grep CD gives:
    [ 0.630535] ata5.00: ATAPI: TSSTcorpCD/DVDW SH-S162L, TS04, max UDMA/33
    [ 0.630560] ata5.01: ATAPI: TSSTcorpCD/DVDW SH-S162L, TS08, max UDMA/33
I also recall reading here that perhaps they aren't being picked up by the kernel, but I am very unclear on how to check to see what the kernel is picking up. I'm also not sure if they have ever worked under Arch and then stopped, or whether they never worked at all. I just found out earlier today when I went to burn a CD and xfburn gave a message saying that there were no burners found.
The /dev directory has no cdrom* or sr* listings at all. lshw also shows nothing about the optical drives. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

I unplugged one of the drives, but it still did not show up in /dev. I checked the systemd log and it shows the folllowing:
    [dochollidae@ArchLinux ~]$ sudo journalctl | grep DVD
    Dec 02 03:40:58 ArchLinux kernel: ata5.01: ATAPI: TSSTcorpCD/DVDW SH-S162L, TS08, max UDMA/33

The one labeled "TS04" isn't there anymore, but the one that is doesn't show up in devices.
I looked into writing udev rules, and I came across this thread and created a file /etc/udev/rules.d/82-cdrom.rules:
    SUBSYSTEM=="block", KERNEL=="sr0", SYMLINK+="cdrom cdrw dvd dvdrw", ENV{GENERATED}=1
    # permissions for IDE CD devices
    SUBSYSTEMS=="ide", KERNEL=="hd[a-z]", ATTR{removable}=="1", ATTRS{media}=="cdrom*", GROUP="optical"
    # permissions for SCSI CD devices
    SUBSYSTEMS=="scsi", KERNEL=="s[rg][0-9]*", ATTRS{type}=="5", GROUP="optical"
That didn't do the trick, but being that I have never dealt with writing udev rules before, I'm not sure if I'm going about it the right way.

Since I upgrade to Lion OS my optical drive stop working can't read or write at all I did what I could to fix it but still not working , any help please

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

  • Optical Drive/slot loading drive not recognized by imac G5. HELP US!!!!!

We have an imac G5 that is maybe 14 months old. I know for a fact that the slot loading optical drive on the side has been used for three things in the entire time we've owned it. That's THREE TIMES in 14 months and now it's as if the drive doesn't exist on the computer. I've gone into the system profiler, it says there is no drive, try to put in a cd, no resistance, no noise and it doesn't even try to suck in any disc. Has anyone else experienced this? Have you figured out what to do? I can replace the drive myself, it's not hard but can someone recommend a good quality drive cause I'm not paying through the nose for parts from apple only to have them crap out on me.
    I feel ripped off!

We have 3 right now having problems. 1 just went into the ITech store to have a CD removed. 1 will not even accept a CD anymore and the other just makes awful noises and scratches the CD. These have been minimally used also. They said the Optical Drive is bad on the 1st one. Of course, we are 1 month past our warranty! I think Apple should be backing this but when I called about it they didn't want to help me. Even saying I had not registered them even though I had documentation from them saying I had. I know the feeling of being ripped off. Our company has purchased 20 of these in the last 1 1/2 years. You think we would get a little bit of help from Apple being we have purchased so many of their products in the last 20 years.

  • Optical drive does not read CD's but DVD's please help!

    My disc burning read-out is:
    HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4165B
when i place any type of CD in my optical drive, after a few seconds the drive ejects. When i place any type of DVD media in the optical drive it reads perfect. any one have a solutions please help..
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Dual 2.3 GHz PowerPC G5

Well, I bought a CD/DVD cleaner kit, and nothing happened--it didn't even recognize that the cleaner disc was in there and it didn't do anything.
I checked for an optical drive update, but the only one I found was for older Macs for 4X DVDs, which had nothing to do with CDs. Since even music discs won't mount, nor will discs that mount on every other Mac in the house, Macs both older and newer than my G5 and discs both older and newer, I suspect my drive is toast. Dang.

  • Can someone help me with my optical Drive Issues

    Hello Everyone.
I know there are a million discussions going on in this forum about optical drives. I have been reading them and trying to figure out what is going wrong with mine and am hoping someone can help.
    My spec:
    MacBookPro
    10.5.8
    2.33 Intel Core 2 Duo
    HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA4080MA:
    Firmware Revision: AE39
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 0 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds
My Mac has never been very good at burning DVDs (no matter the brand of DVD) I often try to burn discs and get errors. Also, many times I will put a movie DVD into my drive only to have it not load and get ejected.
I've tried burning all kinds of DVD. DVD-R, DVD+R, Verbatim, Maxell, Memorex and I get about the same results everytime. Also... when I eject a DVD after the MAC has tried to burn my Mac often times puts a scratch on the DVD.
What can I do? From reading the post is doesn't sound like there is much I can do. I have apple care but... I think I've had my laptop more than 3 years... is my apple care any good anymore? How do I find out.
Is there any kind of firmware update for the optical drive?
    Thanks
    -Drew

For the burn errors you might want to try resetting your PRAM and SMC controller (this fixed an issue I once had), but the scratching of the disk suggests a physical problem with the drive itself.
I don't know how confident you are, but I replaced a DVD drive in a powerbook and it was relatively straightforward. A compatible drive should be fairly cheap, even second hand. If not get a quote from an apple certified engineer and see if that's more than buying an external drive. I have a full size DVD drive in a firewire enclosure which burns DVDs at 22x and rarely use the shipping drive for anything but watching DVDs.

Hello Volker, welcome to Lenovo forums!
Unfortunately it seems you have already tried everything to force it to work.
If it´s not recognised in bios, I would suggest to call support.
You might try a Linux live CD, but there´s no really hope
and you already know it too, as an experienced ThinkPad user, I think.

TIP: If your computer runs satisfactorily now, it may not be necessary to update the system.

  • Optical Drive keeps rejecting CD/DVD? Help :(

    hello all,
I've had my Macbook for about a year now and the optical drive always worked fine up until a few months ago.
Everytime I insert a CD or DVD for that matter it makes a wierd repeative beeping noise then makes a wierd click when it rejects it.
Just curious if anyone knows whats up? or how much it might cost to have it go checked out/fixed...
I'm safely assuming that something might of got lodged inside accidently from carrying it in my backpack.
but, suggestions/ thoughts will be helpful!

You can take it to your nearest Apple Store for a diagnosis and estimate or you can replace it yourself using the repair guides at www.ifixit.com
