Optical Drive Stopped Functioning

My MBP has been working perfectly since I purchased it in May. Yesterday I went to watch a movie, put the disc in, drive worked for about 10 seconds and then spit it out. Have now tested every kind of disc I can find. DVD, DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, I have tested blank media as well as written. Same thing happens each time. Is there a way that I can reset the optical drive, or does this sound like a hardware issue?
Thanks for any direction.

You can try resetting the PMU:

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

  • ITunes8 -- all optical drives stopped working

After installing iTunes 8, all my optical drives stopped working. Windows simply didn't recognize them. Device manager said they were missing. However the BIOS found them. Uninstalling iTunes8 fixed it.
However, like everyone else here, now I can't return to a previous version of iTunes because it refuses to recognize my library file (a .itl file).
    Argg
What can I do, to either use an older version of iTunes, or fix this problem?

I tried the suggested fix on Apple's site (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2372?viewlocale=en_US) but both my DVD drives remained invisible.
Then I tried the one at MS suggested by Adrian Kingsley-Hughes on his ZDNet blog (http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=2600):
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Hooray! It worked! Not only have my drives reappeared, but I am burning a DVD right now using InfraRecorder.
Unfortunately, now I get a nasty message about missing registry data whenever I start iTunes, but I assume Apple will fix this problem in some future release. I'll have to live with it until then.
I spent hours on this today and almost ordered some new SATA drives, thinking the IDE controller on my mobo must have gone bad. I really appreciate the existence of Adrian's blog and other third party resources!
And I am very annoyed at Apple right now. Releasing software that breaks peoples' computers in a major way is not acceptable, IMHO. Leaving the bad software out there and posting fixes that don't work is even worse.
BTW, I am running XP Pro SP2. I have Logitech hardware and software installed, as well as a number of other USB devices (Treo, Canon printer and scanner, iPod) so (according to Adrian and other sources) I guess I was a likely victim.
Note that, having been burned before by new major releases of iTunes, I was cautious: I held off on installing iTunes 8 until the second release, hoping they'd have fixed any really bad bugs that showed up in the first release by then.
    Silly me.

  • Mac Mini (Mid 2010) Optical Drive Stopped Working. Anyone else?

A month out of Applecare, my optical drive stopped accepting media. Took it to the Apple store and they said it either needs the ODD cabling replaced (roughly $50) or the entire drive is shot and needs to be replaced (roughly $170 repair).
While I wait for the parts to come in, I'm curious if this is a common issue and if anyone has any tips before I throw down almost $200 for an optical drive.

As far as I'm aware any form of DD or DTS whether it be 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 or indeed 7.2 is discrete by nature.
They contain discrete sound channels, but all are contained within one bitstream. They are encapsulated, if you will.
To my understanding, multi-channel PCM is not encapsulated in the same manner.

Yes DisplayPort can provide audio. But you have to either be using an displayport-to-displayport connection, or using an appropriate adapter.
But a typical MDP to DVI adapter is not going to pass audio.
    Mr.C UK wrote:
...DVI does not pass through sound...
This is correct insofar as the fact that the DVI spec does not include audio. And as you said, a typical MDP adapter does not pass audio.
But just so you know, the DVI interface can actually carry audio, if it is present. When I had my 2010 Mini's HDMI port connected to my DVI Detective (via HDMI-DVI adapter) and then the DVI detective was connected to my HDMI reciever (via DVI-HDMI cable), I was receiving the HDMI audio stream at the receiver.

  • Optical drive stopped showing on satellite p775

Hi everyone, i have a Satellite P775-s7215 which includes a Blu ray drive that's giving me some problems.
The optical drive has been disappearing "randomly" from windows and the bios doesn't recognized it either, I say "randomly" because sometimes i get to use it normally and even watch movies.
When it disappears, it doesn't show up in the bios and neither in the device manager but the drive has power and if I put a disc it tries to read it.
I have tried running some of the microsoft fixes but the problem persists. One solution that has worked for me (but now has stopped) was removing the battery and press the power on and put the battery back.
I really don't know what to do and i would appreciate some help before trying something more drastical like changing the drive.
    Best regards, Jose

Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like a software issue to me. It most likely requires servicing.

  • Optical Drive Stopped Working (common problem)

Like seemingly everyone else, my macbook's optical drive no longer recognizes dvds or cds, except sometimes randomly. This started a few months ago and has progressively gotten worse.
I saw a few places that people just got them replaced. Is this the best solution? And if so, will they do it an an apple store or did you send it away?
Black Macbook, 2006. Mac os 10.4.11.

If your MacBook isn't on warranty anymore, you can try to clean your drives lens.
You need to open your Macbook and drive in order to do that, I wouldn't recommend using cleaning CD with little brushes, they can make it even worse (lens in MAcBook drives is so close to disks surface, that can actually cut CD's brush...)

  • Is there anyway to verify that my optical drive is functioning properly?

I keep getting errors when trying to write DVD's. I have tried using Toast 8 as well as the burn folder. Both applications seem to run through the burning stage ok but with both applications there are errors when verifying the data. From Burn Folder I get, error code 0x80020063.
I have up to date software. I have tried writing different information on to the DVD's with both Toast and Burn Folder. I have also tried different DVD's. I have also repaired all permissions.
I am pulling my hair out and ready to trash my computer, I hate when it does not work as it should.
About a week ago I picked my Macbook up while burning a DVD, there was a funny sound, like the disk rubbing against something while spinning fast. Is it possible that I have damaged the optical drvie somehow? Is there some way to verify this? Is there another solution to this problem?

It's quite possible that you damaged the optical drive when picking up the MacBook. Personally I refuse to move my MacBook when it has optical media in it. Have you tried importing music off of a CD as a test? Also, the verification stage isn't required. Try and have it skip that and just manually verify by eye.

  • 'Apple External Optical Drive' stopped working

I'm trying to install Windows XP on a Macbook Air. I successfully installed the OS using the USB Superdive. I then inserted my Leopard disk and installed Bootcamp 3.0. After the reboot I can no longer use the external drive. When I look in device manager the show that USB device as in error. I have tried reboots, un-installing the device, scanning for hardware changes, etc.
Does any one have a clue how to get the external drive working again within Windows XP on my bootcamp installation?

The error code was 10 as I recall. I'll look again in a minute (re-install boot camp) what I did find was if I uninstalled the Apple 'ODD' driver from the system the drive was immediately available again and worked fine. I was even able to eject the disc. However, I can't insert a new dis in that state. When you try to push the new one in the drive is in a state where it is still 'pushing out' and wont take it. If I reboot I can then use another disc, but again once ejected I can't use it.
I can get my software installed this way I guess, with lots of reboots. But with Apple's driver in place it does not work at all.
Once I get a few programs installed I'll re-apple Apple's driver and see what I end up with.

  • 2011 iMac Optical Drive Disconnecting in Windows 8

I recently installed a copy of Windows 8 using the 14 March 2013 version of Bootcamp. Everything installed correctly, at least to the best of my knowledge. However, after two boots without any issues, my optical drive stopped reading disks. Power still goes to it, and It works perfectly in OSX. In Windows, however, it has ceased reading and ejecting any CD/DVD that I attempt to play, forcing me to restart into OSX to eject the disk. I went into Device Manager, and the driver appears to be intact, but shows the error:
Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)
To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer.
Obviously this is not a Hardware issue, as I retain full functionality in OSX, and the Optical Drive was working the first two boots. I am at a loss how to proceed from here, though. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So I managed to at least making it work properly. by installing the power management driver- dependency package - lenovo settings win8 store app.... now my question is: I would like to keep this functionality of turning my optical drive on and off... but i dont really need all that software around.. which of these 3 can i uninstall and keep this functionality?

  • Random optical drive noise

I have a 1.33 mhz powerbook that I purchased a little over a year ago.
Twice now I've had a strange occurrence–the optical drive has made the noise that it makes when it's ejecting a disc, without a disc being present.
I tried searching for a similar posts on this board but couldn't come up with any. Is this the sign of an impending problem?

    Perhaps your PowerBook is bulimic!
As long as your optical drive is still functioning properly with discs in it, then you shouldn't worry. Your warranty is up, and you don't want to worry about fixing something unless it's broken, especially with Apple laptops. Unless you have AppleCare, calling Apple is going to be about as helpful as bringing sand to the desert.
If your optical drive stops working, you have a couple of solutions. There are companies that install optical drives for PowerBooks, such as http://www.mcetech.com. If you want to stick to internal, that's your best course of action. Or, if you can't part with your PowerBook for that long (you ship it to them and they install it for you), you can just pick up a FireWire optical drive.

  • Dc/dvd drive not functioning and not recognized in device manager after installing Windows 7 OS

I have an HP Pavilion laptop, model # dv9617nr, which was originally loaded (from the factory) with Windows Vista.  I upgraded the OS to Windows 7 a few months ago, and initially, everything worked fine.  Within the last month, however, my DVD/CD ROM optical drive stopped working and is not recognized in Explorer, and does not show up in Device Manager.  I have tried a number of fixes from this forum and the Microsoft Windows 7 forums, with no positive effect.  I should note that upon inserting a disc in the drive, everything sounds normal (device spins and the external LED lights up) but nothing happens and the unit shuts down.
I have no idea if this is a software or a hardware issue.  I did check the HP website for software and driver updates for my model and the Windows7 OS, but HP has no update for this PC running this OS.  ANY help is greatly appreciated.
