Optical drive stopped showing on satellite p775

Hi everyone, i have a Satellite P775-s7215 which includes a Blu ray drive that's giving me some problems.
The optical drive has been disappearing "randomly" from windows and the bios doesn't recognized it either, I say "randomly" because sometimes i get to use it normally and even watch movies.
When it disappears, it doesn't show up in the bios and neither in the device manager but the drive has power and if I put a disc it tries to read it.
I have tried running some of the microsoft fixes but the problem persists. One solution that has worked for me (but now has stopped) was removing the battery and press the power on and put the battery back.
I really don't know what to do and i would appreciate some help before trying something more drastical like changing the drive.
Best regards, Jose

Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like a software issue to me. It most likely requires servicing.

It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/baddns.php
    http://www.adwaremedic.com/kb/hackedrouter.php
If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

  • ITunes8 -- all optical drives stopped working

After installing iTunes 8, all my optical drives stopped working. Windows simply didn't recognize them. Device manager said they were missing. However the BIOS found them. Uninstalling iTunes8 fixed it.
However, like everyone else here, now I can't return to a previous version of iTunes because it refuses to recognize my library file (a .itl file).
    Argg
What can I do, to either use an older version of iTunes, or fix this problem?

I tried the suggested fix on Apple's site (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2372?viewlocale=en_US) but both my DVD drives remained invisible.
Then I tried the one at MS suggested by Adrian Kingsley-Hughes on his ZDNet blog (http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=2600):
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Hooray! It worked! Not only have my drives reappeared, but I am burning a DVD right now using InfraRecorder.
Unfortunately, now I get a nasty message about missing registry data whenever I start iTunes, but I assume Apple will fix this problem in some future release. I'll have to live with it until then.
I spent hours on this today and almost ordered some new SATA drives, thinking the IDE controller on my mobo must have gone bad. I really appreciate the existence of Adrian's blog and other third party resources!
And I am very annoyed at Apple right now. Releasing software that breaks peoples' computers in a major way is not acceptable, IMHO. Leaving the bad software out there and posting fixes that don't work is even worse.
BTW, I am running XP Pro SP2. I have Logitech hardware and software installed, as well as a number of other USB devices (Treo, Canon printer and scanner, iPod) so (according to Adrian and other sources) I guess I was a likely victim.
Note that, having been burned before by new major releases of iTunes, I was cautious: I held off on installing iTunes 8 until the second release, hoping they'd have fixed any really bad bugs that showed up in the first release by then.
    Silly me.

  • Mac Mini (Mid 2010) Optical Drive Stopped Working. Anyone else?

A month out of Applecare, my optical drive stopped accepting media. Took it to the Apple store and they said it either needs the ODD cabling replaced (roughly $50) or the entire drive is shot and needs to be replaced (roughly $170 repair).
While I wait for the parts to come in, I'm curious if this is a common issue and if anyone has any tips before I throw down almost $200 for an optical drive.

As far as I'm aware any form of DD or DTS whether it be 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 or indeed 7.2 is discrete by nature.
They contain discrete sound channels, but all are contained within one bitstream. They are encapsulated, if you will.
To my understanding, multi-channel PCM is not encapsulated in the same manner.

It was my understanding from the posts from others that this would carry digital audio.
Yes DisplayPort can provide audio. But you have to either be using an displayport-to-displayport connection, or using an appropriate adapter.
But a typical MDP to DVI adapter is not going to pass audio.
    Mr.C UK wrote:
...DVI does not pass through sound...
This is correct insofar as the fact that the DVI spec does not include audio. And as you said, a typical MDP adapter does not pass audio.
But just so you know, the DVI interface can actually carry audio, if it is present. When I had my 2010 Mini's HDMI port connected to my DVI Detective (via HDMI-DVI adapter) and then the DVI detective was connected to my HDMI reciever (via DVI-HDMI cable), I was receiving the HDMI audio stream at the receiver.

  • Optical drive not showing up after installing SSD HD on satellite L75-B7150

I just installed an ssd drive in my satellite L75-B7150. I had to unscrew the locking screw on the optical drive and slide it out. Now it wont show up in this PC windows 8.1. it does have power and the light led comes on a while with a disk in it but then goes out. It seems to be plugged in ok as far as the power.Could it be a driver problem? there doesn't seem to be any specific drivers for it.The drive probably isn't making contact with the sata connection. Does any one know a trick to putting them in. the optical drive pushes in after the case is snapped together so unsnapping the case wouldn't help me.

make sure it is selected as the startup disc.    system preferences>startup disc> make sure new hdd is the default startup disc.

  • Flash drive stopped showing up in Finder sidebar

My flash drive still works perfectly, except for the fact that it stopped showing up on the sidebar under DEVICES. It's a little pesky having to look it up in my desktop when I should be able to find it quickly in every FINDER window.

Go to Finder?Preferences>Sidebar and make sure that External disks is checked.

  • Disk in Macbook optical Drive not showing so cannot eject it

I put a DVD into the optical drive of my Macbook Pro and, at first, it worked normally, playing the DVD and displaying the disk on the Desktop, but now it doesn't display on the Desktop, so I can't eject it.
I've tried logging off and on again and restarting the computer, but the disk will not display.
Please, how do I eject this disk?

Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this:
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
    /usr/bin/drutil eject.
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into single-user mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • Optical Drive Stopped Functioning

My MBP has been working perfectly since I purchased it in May. Yesterday I went to watch a movie, put the disc in, drive worked for about 10 seconds and then spit it out. Have now tested every kind of disc I can find. DVD, DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, I have tested blank media as well as written. Same thing happens each time. Is there a way that I can reset the optical drive, or does this sound like a hardware issue?
    Thanks for any direction.

You can try resetting the PMU:

  • Optical Drive Stopped Working (common problem)

Like seemingly everyone else, my macbook's optical drive no longer recognizes dvds or cds, except sometimes randomly. This started a few months ago and has progressively gotten worse.
I saw a few places that people just got them replaced. Is this the best solution? And if so, will they do it an an apple store or did you send it away?
Black Macbook, 2006. Mac os 10.4.11.

If your MacBook isn't on warranty anymore, you can try to clean your drives lens.
You need to open your Macbook and drive in order to do that, I wouldn't recommend using cleaning CD with little brushes, they can make it even worse (lens in MAcBook drives is so close to disks surface, that can actually cut CD's brush...)

  • Optical drive not showing up on satellite L75-b after ssd drive install

I just installed an ssd drive in my satilite L75-B7150. I had to unscrew the locking screw on the opticol drive and slide it out. Richard,
You do have a failure of the backside L2 cache, a common problem on the Lombard. This memory is soldered to the microprocessor card and the only fix is a replacement card.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=51159
I don't know if the failed L2 cache memory would cause a problem with the HD on the internal IDE bus controller; it apparently does not via the USB bus.
Generally, users who have the failed L2 cache do not have a successful startup unless they reset the power manager. Try this: With the Lombard turned off, reset the power manager and see if it will start up to the internal HD. If no success, shut down, insert your OS 9.2 CD, reset the power manager, and see if the HD appears on the desktop after booting to the CD.

  • All my external Hard Drives stopped showing up in both Finder and Disk Utility

    Hello there.
i have this strange issue that occured just out of nowhere without me (knowingly) having contributed anything to it.
yesterday i launched my iMac and my external firewire drive wasn't showing up in neither the finder nor on the desktop. i instantly thought about a hard drive crash, but soon tried other things to evaluate (or not) my guess.
for instance, i unplugged the drive waited a few minutes before i plugged it in again. since this iomega drive is also equipped with a regular usb port i also switched cables and tried connecting it via the iMac usb sockets as well as via an usb hub without any luck. the drive still won't show up. so i launched the Disk Utility, to see if the drive needs some checking/repairing, but to my surprise it wasn't showing in Disk Utility either.
thus far i only considered this to be an issue with only this particular external drive, but when i eventually switched on a 2nd external drive (this time an usb drive i use for Time Machine) that drive also refused to show up in either the Finder or the Disk Utility app.
curious as i was, i then fired up a 3rd and 4th external drive and now had all 4 drives running at the same time. none of which were showing up, just as if they weren't even connected with the iMac.
this strikes me as more than odd. i've heard about hard drive failures and crashes. they just occur over time. maybe and under some very strange coincidences it is possible that two external hard drives quit their jobs at the very same time, but seriously .... 4 of them?? i hardly think so.
well, maybe it's the iMac's usb/firewire controller that's causing the trouble, i thought. but then again, my other connected devices (iPhone, iPad, Printer, Scanner, eyeTV) are functioning and get detected just fine as far as i can tell.
i have no idea what's going on. i dismiss the idea of 4 external drives having crashed all at the same time just as much as i don't think that the iMac's usb/firewire controller has got any issues. re-formatting any of the 4 drives is out of the question and even if i'd consider such desperate measures, the Disk Utility wouldn't let me re-format anything anyhow, because the drives aren't listed there. i wish i could just use my Time Machine to resolve the issue but, as i mentioned earlier, i can't access the Time Machine because it also won't show up.
please, i need an expert's help here. please, somebody bring back my 4 external drives so i can access them in finder again.
any help will be much appreciated.
    thank you in advance..
    ..Otis

Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    diskutil list

  • Optical Drives Not Showing Up in Boot Menu / HDD

why doesn't  my  dvd rom drive  show up in boot menu in my HP ENVY DV7-7250US with window 8  and how do i fix the problem could it be the dvd drive gone  bad /  i ordered   recovory disk  from hp i am wondering if i ccan i use the recovery disk on a brand new HDD ??

    Hi:
In order to boot from a DVD, you need to change some BIOS settings.
Please read this info for what BIOS settings to change so you can boot from a DVD:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c03736054&lc=en&jumpid=reg_r1002_us...
You should be able to use the disks on a new HDD as long as the storage size of the new HDD is at least as large as the one you replaced.
