Optical Drive tray wont stay closed

My PowerMacG5's optical drive door is stuck open. It will close using any of the normal procedures, but then immediately opens again whether there is a disk in it or not. No matter what I try, the tray always immediately re-opens and stays open. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Take a close look at the drive when you try to close it and see if the disc tray is hitting something.
This is normal behavior for a drive whose tray is blocked by something, so there may be something in the way.

The computer dropped 2 feet. Never happened before. It's working OK but I can't get the optical drive door to stay closed. I would imagine the drive isn't working then. What are my options (I've not any experience opening a machine)? What will Apple want to fix something like this?

Likely more than the iBook is worth.
Some users whose drive wouldn't stay closed have resorted to using duct tape to tape it closed.
Was the computer on when it took the tumble? If so, I would advise repairing the hard drive either by booting into Safe Mode OR by starting up from the Mac OS X Install Disc by inserting the disc and restarting your computer, holding down the C key as the startup chime is ending. Then choose Installer > Open Disk Utility (in Panther) or (in Tiger) click 'Next' at the language screen and choose Utilities > Disk Utility and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive.
Once you have repaired the hard drive with either Safe Mode or the Install disc's Disk Utility, then start up normally and repair permissions from Disk Utility in the Utilities folder on the hard drive.
If you're in the United States, you can use _this page_ to locate an Apple Authorized Service Provider in your area.
    Good luck.

  • Is it possible to leave the optical drive tray open?

    Hello -
I'd like to know if there's any way to have the optical drive tray stay open when shutting down a Mac Pro (PowerPC version, running Leopard)? It's for security reasons in my office to make sure no media is left in after the computer has been shut down.
    Thank you.

AppleTV2 has no 'volume control' over optical - it either sends a Dolby Digital 5.1 stream for movies encoded with this or a stereo linear PCM signal.  AppleTV1 used to send stereo audio as 44.1 kHz 16 bit (CD quality) whatever it was originally  (MP3/AAC/AIFF/WAV), AppleTV2 mucks around and sends a DAT quality signal of 48 kHz 16 bit over optical which yoru Tv may not be able to decode.
Like Rudegar I'd consider the HD4200m as perhaps the model number - some older TVs had the same connections on teh back for a given range, just on lower specced models the connections were not actually connected/enabled.
Another consideration would be whether or not the optical port on the TV is optical out (would not work) rather than  optical in.
The lack of analogue connections on AppleTV2 is a nuisance.  Send some feedback:

Won't help current hardware and doubtful any new design but you never know.

  • The optical drive red light stays on, no sound in OS X, the car charger not working

The optical drive red light stays on, no sound in OS X, the car charger not working, I think that its all tied to 1 error or 1 issue, maybe something to do with the boot camp file?
    Any ideas ?

    Hi S,
There is a switch inside the audio jack that may be stuck. Try gently inserting, wiggling, removing the audio plug.

  • Pushing optical drive tray to close / eject key

silly question -- is it a bad habit to push the optical drive tray inward to close it rather than hitting the eject key on the keyboard? for some reason half the time i press the eject key on my keyboard it does nothing .. it's a hassle so i always push the tray in to close it. is it meant to respond to this?

I've had a similar problem but only when Parallels is running. While Parallels is running I can open the CD tray with the keyboard button but it won't close. I have to close it by hand in those situations. I've resorted to pausing Parallels just to close the CD tray lately!

  • Optical drive tray will not close

I bought my Hp laptop yesterday and after charging it fully, i decided it was time to investigate. In doing so, I ejected the optical drive - one of the main reasons i bought it and attempted to close it again. But it won't. I have tried several times, not wanting to over do it and break it, but to no avail. Note that I have not damaged it in any way, it just doesn't want to stay shut!  How do i get it to close...and stay closed?! Thanks.

, Hello and thanks for posting on the HP support forums.  From what you are describing you will have two choices.  First and easiest is to take it back to the store for exchange.  The sensor for the cd tray is not working right and needs to be pulled and repaired.  This will require it being sent in for repair to HP. Contact HP Support. Most stores have a 14 day return policy so with your system being so new it would be much faster. The turn around on a repair could take 10 days. Thanks again for posting and have a great day.

  • New Pioneer DVR-110 installed, "patchburned", BUT drive won't stay closed.

Have had some good advice on how to intall a new DVD/CD drive, but after installing a New Pioneer DVR-110 (I thought succesfully) on my G4, and downloading Patchburn for Panther, the DVD drive now won't function as the computer keeps ejecting or opening the drive tray.
After installing the drive, I installed Patchburn, and Toast did recognize the drive. I then tried to verify disc permissions on the computer and it kept getting hung up during repair/verify saying it lost connection with the drive manager. Tried Onyx to repair/verify permissions and it too gets hung up. (Had to force quit)
Any advice on how to get the drawer of the DVD drive to stay closed and what else I need to do to get it working?... Alas I can not even reinstall my original OSX software now as I can't boot from the disc drive since it won't stay closed.
    Thanks, Rob

You can verify the closeness by opening the empty drive door with the KB and then hold the door open and close drawer with the KB.

  • I have tried many times to install a SSD drive by using optical drive tray, my MBP is early 2011, intel serise 6,  checked on webpage, and someone say SSD could be installed on HDD drive, I guess it could be solved by driver, anyone good idea?

Hi, MBP friends, any ideas for this problem? I tried hard and checked the hardware we have, and it hardly to say the problem from hardware, instead I am thinking it could be solved by driver update, or someone who is good on computer language that could help with the problem.
My computer is early 2011, with intel serise 6 and sata 3 acceptable. I dont know why the opitical drive can not support ssd drive instead.
need help, I really dont want to put my SSD driver to HDD driver, and move HDD driver to optical driver.

well, i have got information from website, and it says it will be harmful to hdd driver set in optical area coz there is no vibration protection function.
i have checked the system, and it says the sata speed is the same 6G and chip intel series 6. it should be the same speed, right?
I am thinking that the chip is the same and mortherboard is the same, the cable is similar as well, why it doesnt work? driver issue? OSX issue? or software issue? firmware?
or simply to say, if i am trying to setup two ssd driver into MBP, it has to be one in opitcal driver area. how could work?
    thanks... still in puzzle.
right now, i have reinstall the osx into ssd by usb external, and install it back with opitcal tray, however, when i turn on the computer, the system can not be logged in from SSD, and computer can not read SSD driver, and it says it must be formatted or push out.

  • Optical Drive Tray

Hi everyone, I'm hoping you could help...
My G5 sits on the floor to my left, slightly behind me, and my optical drive was open, with the tray out. I didn't notice, and as I rolled my chair back, I hit the tray and popped out the right side, so now it won't properly slide back in as it should. Left side is still properly attached, though may also be screwed up from my messing around with it. Is there an easy way to rehinge the tray so it goes back in? I don't want to bust it, and I don't want to have to take it apart either.
    THANK YOU!
    -C

Try to remove your optical drive from your G5, maybe you'll get it fixed, but I guess that you have to replace it: the tray mechanism may be broken.

  • Notes wont stay closed and grabs focus.

Running OSX 10.9.4 on iMac Dual Core 2 Duo.
    Issue with Notes 2.0 (284)
Cannot get ‘Notes’ to stay closed. I have tried Quit, Force Quit, Restarting, Disk Check, CCleaner and Virus scan.
Everytime I shut it down it restarts within 5 - 10s. Once running it grabs focus from other applications, again every 5 - 10s- very annoying when typing urls and passwords!
The only recent change to my system that I can think of was the deletion of Twonky media server.
I have logged on as another user and their account doesn’t have this issue.
I can obviously delete the faulty account but that would be a hassle I wish to avoid.

    It was Twoky's fault!!
CleanTwonkyServerData.command file was left behind with the following command in it...
sudo /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.fra mework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
    open /Applications/Notes.app
Took all day to track that down and apart from annoying people I've no idea why it's in there!

  • Replaced Hard Drive, monitor wont stay on

Last night I replaced the hard drive in my imac. i have booted from a usb to restore from my time machine backup, my monitor only stays on for 1 second for going dark. i can hit the power button and jiggle the mouse to get it back on, but it won't stay on. any suggestions?

Sounds like the computer is going to sleep when you close the lid and therefore turning of the monitor.  If you have an external keyboard and mouse hooked up it should come back on when you hit a key or use the mouse.
Might want to try this too http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/caffeine/id411246225

  • Dvd Drive Won't Stay Closed.

    Hello,
I am having an issue with a HP ZBook, Windows 8.1 64bit
    Processor:Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4210M CPU @ 2.60GHz
    RAM: 8.00GB
    BIOS:rev. 1.08
The issue is that everytime I close my Cd drive it keeps poping back open. It will whirl for about a minute or two then stop and pop back open this computer was on a fresh install and it still happened.
If this is a previous known issue I did not find a solution existing on the forums.
    Any help is appreciated.
Thankyou for your help in advanced.

It generally means the drive needs to be replaced. That is a pretty new laptop and I am thinking it is likely still under warranty. Replacing the DVD drive is pretty easy and HP will likely just send you a new drive for a self-help swap and ask you to return the defective one. Let us know if you want a link to installation instructions.

  • Wont stay closed

This seems like a standard question that has hit many people through different generations of iTunes, but there doesnt seem to be an answer around for why my itunes opens up twice after I close it (i.e I close it, it opens, I close it, it opens, I close it...) I am running the new Beta 10.3, however this has happened with 10.2 and previous versions.
Any enlightenment would be nice.  I am running Win 7 64bit, intel core i5 2500K, 8gb ram, ati radeon hd4770. it also happened on my previous pc which was a amd processor based model also running win 7 64bit
    cheers

    Checkout this http://forums.logitech.com/t5/G-Series-Gaming-Keyboards/G19-keeps-opening-iTunes /m-p/794559
I found out it was my keyboard's software. If you have a different keyboard it may still be the cause.
This worked for me nicely. I can close itunes whenever I want now.

  • Optical Drive doesn't read DVD's

Hi, I own an HP Pavillion dv7 1279wm entertainment laptop. It came installed with Vista, but I installed a free upgrade to Windows 7 that I got from HP. I had a problem where the drive would not read anything; the disc would spin, but eventually the tray would automatically open and tell me to insert a disc. After using Microsoft FixIt, I was able to read CDs, but encountered the same problem when trying to load a DVD. Previous to using Microsoft FixIt, I did use device manager to uninstall the drive and then reboot so Windows 7 would automatically update the driver. I'm thinking that means that it's not a software problem, but if you can think of anything else I can do (short of swapping out drives because I don't have access to another drive) to rule out it being a software problem please let me know. I realize that combo drives typically use different lasers to read CDs and DVDs, so my guess is that the laser that reads DVDs has failed. If that is the case, where can I find the correct replacement part and how do I install it?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

    Hi Kevin,
If you eject the optical drive tray, you should see just one laser situated towards the centre of the tray - different voltages are applied to this depending on whether it's reading a CD or DVD.
First of all, use a soft, non abrasive material such as cotton or a cotton bud and gently clean the lens.
Check if this has made any difference.
If it still doesn't read DVDs, try following the procedure under the sub-heading 'Let me fix it myself' on the link below to remove the Upper and Lower filters, restart the notebook and see if this helps the issue.
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116
If it still doesn't read DVDs, the following procedure will test if your notebook can start from a bootable disc in the optical drive - the advantage of trying this is that it will rule out any possible Windows driver error as the CD/DVD drive is under the control of the Bios when starting the notebook.  So if you find that the notebook will not boot from the DVD, then it's almost certainly a Hardware fault in the optical drive itself and it will need to be replaced.
Using another PC to create a Windows 7 Rescue DVD.  Download the relevant ISO from the link below.
    Windows 7 32bit
    Windows 7 64bit
You need use an application such as ImgBurn to correctly burn the ISO to a DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  Once created, insert the DVD and then restart the notebook and see if it boots from this disc - if it does, let the first screen come up ( this will show repair options etc ) then just remove the DVD and restart the notebook.  If the notebook will not boot from the DVD, it may just load straight into Windows.

  • Waterproof Seals dont stay closed

    Hi,
I was wondering if anyone else is having simular issues with the waterproof seals not staying closed. My phone is 4 months old and the waterproof seal that covers the charger unit wont stay closed, when I close it, it will pop open again after about 30 seconds, the seal doesnt seem to be broken but I am worried that this renders the phone unwaterproof. I have a flip case on my phone (genuine Sony case) and havent dropped the phone at all. There is no damage and it is in excellent condition. Has anyone or is anyone having the same issues and is anyone able to offer assistance on this issue.
    Handset: Sony Xperia Z2
    Thanks,
    Gareth

My flaps don't come out, I used some for car silicon fluid which I use before winter on doors and rubber seals. I noticed they'll pop up when get dry and so far no problem for mine device. A colleague has a later Z2 and his flaps do open all the time in fact he bought new flaps from sony store for change but it didn't solve the problem, it must be something with hole shape that pushes the flaps out. My first Z2 was badly formed and my flaps didn't hide out from the box, the device was exchanged for a new one right away saying something like "the phone couldn't be repaired due to manufacturing fault. The device was exchanged for a new, issue-free example."
