Optical Drive will not stay closed

The computer dropped 2 feet. Never happened before. It's working OK but I can't get the optical drive door to stay closed. I would imagine the drive isn't working then. What are my options (I've not any experience opening a machine)? What will Apple want to fix something like this?

Likely more than the iBook is worth.
Some users whose drive wouldn't stay closed have resorted to using duct tape to tape it closed.
Was the computer on when it took the tumble? If so, I would advise repairing the hard drive either by booting into Safe Mode OR by starting up from the Mac OS X Install Disc by inserting the disc and restarting your computer, holding down the C key as the startup chime is ending. Then choose Installer > Open Disk Utility (in Panther) or (in Tiger) click 'Next' at the language screen and choose Utilities > Disk Utility and select the hard drive in the left column. Choose the First Aid tab. Click Repair Disk to test and repair the hard drive.
Once you have repaired the hard drive with either Safe Mode or the Install disc's Disk Utility, then start up normally and repair permissions from Disk Utility in the Utilities folder on the hard drive.
If you're in the United States, you can use _this page_ to locate an Apple Authorized Service Provider in your area.
Good luck.

  • My CD/DVD drive tray will not stay closed

I have a G3 dual USB iBook and my CD/DVD-Rom tray will not stay closed. Any idea's how to fix this?

OK .. I'd been struggling with this problem for a number of weeks - on a friends iBook ( I'm not sure of the Factory Config - but it is a G4).
Anyway - I've scoured these files on the Apple Support system with NO luck at all - and a number of other forums and support sites... that is until I came across a mention of resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit). This URL was given: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449#faq6 .... which of course leads right back here!
But I read all the info and then sought out the appropriate method for a PMU reset and did it. VOILA! It worked.
Now ... I would suggest that this would be a good time to run a Disk Utility (like Disk Warrior) to check out the Disk and System.
But .. the CD Tray remains closed now. So - I hope this gets you all back in business.

My optical drive will not read any music cds or recognize a blank cd. it might read some data cds. what is wrong with it and how can i fix it?

The optics might be dirty. Try running a cleaning CD through it and see if that makes a difference.
If not, it will have to be replace.

  • Optical drive will not eject

My Satellite A205-S5814 optical drive will not eject when I press the eject button.
Before this problem started, the drive would eject, but sometimes a blank screen would immediately appear after the tray ejected and then the computer would restart itself and give me the option of restarting in safe mode.
Please let me know what may be wrong.
    Thanks.

Your machine is booting into a Windows partition.
Apple does not support Windows. They do provide "Boot camp" which allows a knowledgeable person to install XP in a drive partition on a Mac.
However "boot camp" still in "beta" status and some of the keyboard mapping is not the same as a Windows PC, because it's a Mac, not a PC.
Mac's come with Mac OS X standard, not Windows. The copy of Windows you got on the machine was likely put there for demonstration purposes, not for sale. If you know how to hack Windows, I'm sure you could bypass the admin password, that's a "store trick" to sell a product with a illegal copy of Windows.
All Mac's will open the c.d. tray if you reboot holding the mouse button down with a wired keyboard.
You can also reboot again holding "option key" to select a drive partition to boot from, there should be a Mac OS X and a Windows partition, however it's possible the Mac OS X partition was erased.
You can stick the Mac OS X installer disk in the c.d. tray, close it and reboot holding "c". It will boot off the disk. There you can select Disk Utility from the Installer menu and Erase w/Zero the internal hard drive. When finished Quit and install Mac OS X Tiger. Your "store copy" of Windows will be gone of course.
If your unfamiliar with Mac's, Mac OS X, "Boot Camp" with Windows, I suggest you have someone help you. Your in very deep too early in your learning curve.
You'll really need to learn Mac OS X first, then you can play around with "Boot-Camp" and a legal copy of XP in a drive partition.
With Mac OS X your machine will be very safe from internet threats, but when your in "Boot Camp" under XP, your just like any Windows PC, completely vulnerable.

  • Optical drive will not open disc

Optical drive will not open CD or DVD since upgrading to Lion.

My Macbook Pro has just developed the exact same problem within the last month.  Mine has been working fine since upgrading to Lion (upgraded when it was launched), but it has suddenly stopped playing any DVDs or CDs.
Does anyone have any suggestions before I book a genius bar appointment?

  • Toshiba ph3100u-1exb External Hard Drive Will Not Stay On

    Hello all.
I recently purchased a Toshiba ph3100u-1exb 1.0 TB external hard drive. It's working great, but the problem I am running into is that it will not stay powered on for more than a couple minutes. I'm sure that its some kind of power saving feature, but if there's a way to turn it off, I'd like to have the drive accessible at all times, as I use the information stored on it quite a bit.
When it powers down, I can always press the power button to bring it back up, but I would like to have it on all the time. Is there any way at all to do this? A setting on the drive, or possibly within Windows?
I have the drive hooked up via a USB cable, as this PC is a bit older and does not use the eSATA cables for hard drives.

    Hi
In my opinion the HDD should be checked with different computers and different OS (Vista, Win 7, Win XP). If the external HDD will not functions using different systems and computers then its definitely an HDD issue.
Ive got 2 different external HDDs one HDD died and I had to replace it.
In my opinion, if an HDD begins to malfunction then its mostly an hardware related issue and there is nothing to do as to replace the faulty drive

  • Network drive will not stay attached

Buffalo tech 250 gig NAS share folder will not stay attached after the most recent update. Sometimes remote folder is available and drive is visible other times is not.

    Hi Kevin,
" After I made the first folder available offline, the remaining folders on the network drive did not show up, only the initial folder that was made available offline."
Will the other folders appear when we uncheck "always available offline" ? Will the other folders appear when we get into the folder directly from the windows explorer without from the mapped network drive ?Have you added any specific parameters
    in the mapped script?
Please uncheck this setting "work online"to have a check :

  • Optical Drive tray wont stay closed

My PowerMacG5's optical drive door is stuck open. It will close using any of the normal procedures, but then immediately opens again whether there is a disk in it or not. No matter what I try, the tray always immediately re-opens and stays open. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Take a close look at the drive when you try to close it and see if the disc tray is hitting something.
This is normal behavior for a drive whose tray is blocked by something, so there may be something in the way.

  • My optical drive will not play Dvds..what can I do to fix it

Everytime I put a DVD into the optical drive it will not be recognized or play.  This all began to happen after the latest software update.

Do a SMC and PRAM reset at least 2-3 times for each. You may not be familiar with these resets, if not please click Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets for instructions.

  • ITunes will not stay closed

I have been having a problem for a few months that I cannot get iTunes to stay closed. When I try and close iTunes, it immediately reopens. This means that I cannot shut down OSX since iTunes always reopens and cancels the restart.
I have searched the net and have not found a answer to this. I do not have the iTunes widget running. I check application monitor and itunes helper is not running. I realize that something is keeping it open but I cannot figure what that is. Is there a log or anyway to find out what keeps open iTunes?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I have srs iwow, LastFM & Growl. I have killed all of these and continue to have the problem. (Unless they are hanging around. I have boot with both LastFM & Growl completed turned off and the problem still shows itself.
I should also mention that my itunes now has the spinning beach ball of death quite often. It always comes out of it but at times it takes minuets to complete simple tasks.
    Thanks.

  • After Upgrade to 10.5.8 Optical Drive will not Recognize DVD's

    Hello Everyone,
I was hoping that someone would be able to shed light on a problem I recently ran into after upgrading from Leopard 10.5.7 to 10.5.8 and possibly suggest a solution.
I believe there is an issue with the optical drive software. The reason I suspect this is because one evening I was able to watch a DVD without any problems. After completing the upgrade to version 10.5.8 of Leopard last night, the same DVD failed to play. When inserting the disk, the optical drive makes a whirring sound for about a minute then proceeds to spit out the DVD. I've tested this with CD's, which seem to work fine. Other DVD's have the same issue as the first.
Can anyone suggest anything to help sort this issue out?
    Many thanks to everyone.
    Ron

I'm facing the same issues with my MacBook and its "SuperDrive". Right after inserting any media, it spits it out immediately, thus, I'm not able to read nor write any kind of disc. Below are the specs for my "SuperDrive":
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-868:
    Firmware: KA14
    Connection: ATAPI
    Recording: Yes
    Cache: 0 KB
    Reads DVD: Sim
    Records CD: -R, -RW
    Records DVD: -R, -RW
    Recording: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
I have sent Steve Jobs an email ([email protected], [email protected], [email protected] and [email protected]) and posted a feedback here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbook.html
Probably you guys have seen it already, but MacBook Pro owners are having similar issues with their "SuperDrives": http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1918925&start=0&tstart=0

  • My optical drive will not recognize cd's....but it will play dvd's.  When i insert an audio cd it spins but eventually spits it out.

My CD/DVD drive will only play DVD's.  When I insert an audio cd it just spins then ejected.  I checked my settings and it should open with Itunes.  I read something about messing with the language but that didn't seem to work.  HELP!!!

Take it to an Apple store or AASP.

  • Vid driver will not stay loaded in WinXP

I am running WinXP, I have a MSI Ti 4400 running on a MSI 745 Ultra MB rith 1gig of 333 memory.  I just did a critical update for XP, after that I got an error loading the vid driver message "Windows cannot load the device driver for this Hardware.  The driver may be corrupted or missing."  I have uninstalled everything, tried installing the 2 different drivers (ver 3.0 and the beta 3.1) from MSI and from Nvidia and still get the error.  I rolled back to before Critical update and still the same problem.
    Any suggestions?
also as an aside, I have this on a duel boot set up (2 different HDs), the main is W2K, but when it loads I sometimes get a "Missing or corrupt NTLDR", but if I restart it a couple of time it will load.  I have thought about pulling out the C: HD that has W2K on it since this machine is only a gaming machine.
Thank you for your help. :P

try manually installing the drivers get the latest from nvidia usually a exe after you get it execute it but do not go passed where it ask you to agree.  leave it on the screen and while it's there go to your temp folder for windows (usually either in the windows folder or for XP and NT it will be in the documents and settings/username/localsettings/temp you won't see the local settings folder unless you have selected to see hidden files.  Inside the temp folder the installer extracts the files for the drivers into a folder beginning with the letters pft once you find the one with all the nv stuff in it right click and copy the folder you found.  then while you are still in the temp folder click edit and paste you should now have a copy of that folder now go back to the nvidia installer that you started and cancel it then proceed to manually update drivers from the device manager and when it ask you where to look for the drivers point it to the copied folder you made.
