Optical drive won't hold discs

Hi! I was trying to install a program in a disc but my optical drive just started to oppose resistance to it when I tried to insert the disc. It happened suddenly, never had this kind of issue before. After some time fiddling around with the laptop I finally get the cd inserted and now it goes in almost smoothly but the optical drive just ejects it as it goes in. Could anyone tell me what the problem is and a possible solution avoiding replacing the drive or buying a new external one?
Thank you all.

replacement Superdrive is $40 (on a do it yourself basis) new, made by Panasonic

  • HP Envy 15 Optical Drive Won't Eject Disc

I tried to burn a DVD and loaded a DVD-R into the optical drive. Burned the disc, now the disc won't eject. I try restarting the computer and going through Computer to eject, and nothing. It sounds like it tries to eject, fails, takes back in the disc and runs it.  This is definitely a problem, considering I'm a filmmaker and need to produce this DVD soon.
Please tell me I don't have to wait for an HP tech to take my computer for a week and a half to fix my brand freaking new notebook that I dished out over a thousand dollars for. This kind of thing is infuriating. And it seems others share this problem. So I wonder why it wasn't fixed.
Thank you in advance for all the help.

  • Optical drive won't recognize discs, reports as "LATSHITADVD-R   TJ,865! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !"

I had this problem earlier, twice. Optical drive replaced under Apple Care. I suspect this is a software or firmware corruption based on the information that System Profiler returns to me, not really a hardware failure.
I'd like to be able to restore this driver, but don't really know where to go find it. Except in the Unix way. I do have a USB drive set up as a boot drive, so I can boot there and run some fixes.

Most probably not a firmware issue or virus.
Usually these problems are due to a dirty lens.
But before you try a lens cleaning kit, you might try a SMC reset (if you have an Intel Mini) or a PMU reset (if you have an older G4 PPC Mini). Be sure to use the correct reset procedure for your model of Mini! Applying a PMU reset to an Intel mini can cause real problems.
The G4 Minis have two USB ports on the back; the Intels have four USB ports.
See, for example, this post for an explanation of the two reset procedures:

  • Please help.  Optical drive won't take disc, imac won't boot up!

I installed Tiger 10.4.6 and it was working just fine, had done several restarts.
Then I put in an office for mac cd and it wouldn't boot up. I tried ejecting it wouldn't work. I finally got the disc out, but the computer wouldn't start.
I booted up in safe mode, i booted up in single user mode and did the fgsk thing. I got the I/0 error.
How can I fix this? I don't care if I lose everything on the computer, I just want it to work again.

Oh, that presents a problem. Try resetting the SMU.
Otherwise, I'm afraid you will need to take it in for repair.

  • Optical drive won't read certain discs?

Hello, this is my first post in the community and I am a novice with computers. I bought my iMac in 2010 at Apple and it has been the best computer I have ever owned. But for some reason starting today the optical drive won't read any type of cd's like a user's manual or software install disc. It tries but just ejects it back out. Now the strange part is I can put any dvd disc to play a movie and plays it perfectly with no problem at all. Has anyone had this happen to them or any thought on what is wrong. My wife has a macbook and hers works fine and I checked her system preferences for cd's/dvd and they are the same. I a running 10.6.8 OS. Thanks

The iMac supports the following CD types if it is one of these types and still won't read then it sounds like a CD hardware or software driver problem. If you re-load the software driver and it still doesn't work then I would then suggest you take it to an Apple store for repair.

  • Optical Drive won't power on

    Hi everyone,
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W520, and my optical drive won't power on. The problem is that it is by default set on "safe to remove", and when I want to use it, I have to remove it first and then put it back. BUT that won't work unless I reboot the machine after removal. I searched on this forum, but I did not find the solution for so far.
I found some topics on the optical drive, which describe that one can toggle an option for activating the optical drive in Power Manager, which I can not find in my version (6.36).
Is there any solution for this? I would like the optical drive to be powered on by default, and not in the "safe to remove" mode, so I can use it any time without having to remove the optical drive and rebooting the system.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jeroen

Well....it may be fine for you to accept an inferior item, not I. I paid for a unit that was supposed to be fully operational and work as designed. I will not accept having to reboot every time I want to put a CD or DVD into my computer! That's like having to restart your car so the headlights work. Even if one doesn't drive at night, you would still expect the headlights to work ANYTIME you want them without the extra steps. I know "where" the issue is and I know "why" the issue is BUT unfortunately, there is not a fix I can find. Between uninstalling and reinstalling drivers and applications and etc. I give up. They will replace my unit according to Lenovo, with a brand new laptop. Should this one have the same issue, I will be disputing my CC charge, and sending the unit back to them for a full and complete refund. I wish I had a copy of WIn8 or Win7 without Lenovo's proprietary software embedded. I bet the unit would work as designed then, but to have them rewrite or add software with hooks directly into the core system is a recipe for disaster. I encourage you to do something about yours also. The more people that ALLOW this "type" manufactured fleecing, the more it will occur.
I guess I will find out just how well this replacement process works.

  • Optical drive won't eject and can't power off from Apple menu!

I have a Quicksilver that has almost always acted great but ever since I physically moved the machine to another room I've been having intermittent problems. Here's a quick summary:
    -Overall more sluggish performance
-Occasionally the optical drive won't eject and I have to restart the whole machine. (I did replace the drive a couple years ago but have never had any problems until now).
-I can no longer shut down/restart from the apple menu, i have to push the power button in.
I used to get device removal error messages at inappropriate times but that seems to have stopped since I reseated my USB 2.0 card. Here's a list of the other remedies I have tried:
    -Repair permissions
-Make sure all cards/RAM seated properly
-Replaced PRAM battery (year was displaying 1970)
    -Ran DiskWarrior
    -Re-imaged entire boot drive
I can't remember if I've tried zapping the PRAM because this problem has been going on for about five months. None of this was an issue before I carted the machine into another room so hopefully I haven't dislodged anything. Also, I notice a lot of static build-up in the room despite the hardwood flooring. Perhaps that could be an issue and if so, any suggestions?
I was dreading that it could be my logic board, any advice?
    thanks,
    Jesse

Hi. I’m having some problems w/ an installation of iTunes on a Windows 64 bit PC.  Specifically, when iTunes is installed, Windows 7 no longer recognizes the optical drive, and I can't burn discs via iTunes.  I’ve attempted to implement all the solutions identified here,

  • Optical Disc Drive won't take discs

I took my Macbook into the Apple Store last week, because the processor failed. I just got it back from being repaired yesterday, and all seemed fine when I wanted to play The Sims 3 this evening and my macbook wouldn't even take the disc when I tried to put it in. It just sits there about most of the way in, and when I try to push the rest it in, there's no noises and nothing grabbing it, just sort of a spring trying to push it back out to me.
Did someone forget to put something back when they repaired it? Because it was working just fine before. I've tried SMC and PRAM resets, nothing. Does this mean I have to make another trip to the Apple Store?

Try holding down the eject button while booting up the computer.
Once it has booted up fully try inserting a disc again.
If this doesn't resolve it, and you have tried an SMC reset, and the other steps outlined at http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2801 under the "drive doesn't accpet discs" sub-heading, then take it back to trhe dealer.
    Cheers

  • CD/DVD drive won't accept discs?

I'm trying to play a DVD in my disc drive. I have an HP Pavilion slimline, model should not matter because it is just an issue with playing discs. It has the Vertical disc drive.
So I have the small DVDs that go in video cameras. There is clearly a small round circle that will accept them. I have played these types in computers with the horizontal drive. My issue is with this being a vertical drive and a smaller disc, it will not stay in the tray.
So should I not be bothering because it won't take these discs or is there some sort of adapter I need to make it stay?

Some drives have a lip or tab to help hold the smaller DVD's in place for the vertical operation.  Apparently that one does not.  The only solution that seems to be using an external DVD drives that lays horizontal.

I have a macbook pro retina which doesn's have an optical drive. I have bought an optical drive. When I plug it in and put a disk in I can hear the disk spinning and the light comes on but nothing happens on my mac. It doesn't seem to recognise it. Any suggestions?

Just had that happen to me.
First, run Disk Utility and see if the SuperDrive (it is an Apple SuperDrive isn't it?) is listed. Is the disk you inserted shown? If not, hold down the option key and click the Apple menu - choose System Information and when that shows up, choose USB. See if it's listed there. If it is but neither the drive nor the disk you inserted appears on the Desktop, the side bar of the Finder window, or Disk Utility, return it for a refund (if it's within 14 days of purchase) or a replacement. That's what I had to do a few hours ago and the replacement works as it should.
BTW, if you want the disk you inserted back, and pressing the trackpad as you reboot doesn't eject the disk, as a last resort run Terminal and enter (copy and paste the following)
    /usr/bin/drutil eject
to try to force the disk to eject. It probably won't work (it didn't for me) but if it does, at least you get that disk back.

  • Optical drive won't burn: Macbook Pro after Mavericks update

I have just updated my OSX to Mavericks on my Macbook Pro, late I know but I was trying to avoid any software conflicts.  My Optical Drive can't burn either CD or DVD.  It plays them and recognises them but won't burn. Error message:
The disc can’t be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media.
I have tried compressed air, restarting, updating software and have looked through this forum for possible solutions but everything I've tried hasn't worked.
I burnt a DVD yesterday with no issue and then updated my OSX last night and know it won't work.
Please help, on the verge of a meltdown with a heavy deadline looming

The built-in camera shouldn't work in Image Capture which is for use with a photographic camera or a scanner. As for Skype you might check if you have the most recent version. If you do, then I would contact the developers about the problem. It's clear that the camera is working with Photo Booth and FaceTime. That suggests there is no problem with Mavericks.

  • Dropped macbook  making noises from optical drive, won't accept CD's/DVD

    Hi,
I am new to the forum, and unfortunately I am posting because I have a problem. I dropped my MacBook (which I've had since August 2006) from a desk, about 2-3 feet onto tile floor. Luckily, everything turned on and is working just fine, except everytime I turn my computer on and everytime it wakes up from sleep, the optical drive makes lots of noise. It sounds like it is trying to eject a nonexistent disk, except it makes that typical noise 3-4 times in a row before stopping. Also, it will not allow me to insert disks (I can get them almost all the way in, but it won't go completely in). I checked in my system profiler and it shows the details of my optical drive, and it is a Matshita DVD-R UJ-857. I called Apple and told them what was happening, and they told me to bring it to a local authorized dealer. However, I am a college student and it's really hard for me to find time to give up my computer for an undetermined amount of time while they wait to diagnose it. Also, I have a feeling it is going to be really expensive, considering they want at least $100 just to look at it, before the cost of labor and parts to actually repair it. Has this happened to anyone else? Any advice on alternatives or experience with this type of issue would be very much appreciated!

My computer just started having the same problem, only I haven't dropped it. I did, however, inadvertantly knock a hot chocolate over, and a little got into the optical drive. I turned the computer off immediately, cleaned it, and left it to dry for a couple hours. But now, whenever I close the lid & the computer goes to sleep, the optical drive keeps making an eject noise (every TEN SECONDS, incredibly annoying). When the computer is open and running, this doesn't happen.
Also, I just popped a DVD in there to test the functionality of the drive, it recognized it and went straight into DVD Player, so that's fine. However, it's hard to get discs to come back out ... it looks like the spilled liquid has dried but stiffened the felt(?) along the insert slot for DVDs/CDs ... when I try to eject, it makes a noise like it's trying to get the disc out, but can't. I used a paperclip (gently!) along the opening and that loosened it up enough to get the disc to eject, but it's still dirty... any ideas on how to clean that without taking the whole computer apart?
I'm having one other issue now, and I don't know if it's related... when I use the trackpad, it won't recognize it if I use my fingers to tap & select items instead of clicking them with the button. But I can still use two fingers to scroll. I checked in System Prefs, it says I should be able to do all the mouse functions by tapping the trackpad, so I don't know what the problem is. :-\

  • Cube 450 optical drive won't work!

Hello fellow Power Mac G4 users!
In both of my Power Mac G4 450 and 500 Cubes, the DVD drives stopped working! The DVD Player app says "There was an initialization error. A valid DVD drive could not be found. {-70012}"
CD's don't work either and never appear on the desktop! Before I replace the drives, why do Cube drives fail while the same drives in my iMac G3's work perfect always? Is it because the Cube forces the drive to sit vertically? I downloaded VLC Player, but that won't work either.
I use this trick to get the discs out...
    http://www.cubeowner.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=13848
Also, I pulled my 450 apart and made sure the optical drive connector was seat properly.
    Thank you in advance!

If you are the DYS kind of guy you can buy a replacement and change it yourself. While you are at it you can clean the coffee remaining inside your MBP.
Once the broken optical is out you can wash it with fresh water to get the sugar out and let it dry in the oven at very low temp (it's dead anyway) . You have a slight chance to get it working again. It worked with a cell phone for me...
And the classic answer is: Call Apple.

  • Optical Drive won't read 90% of CDs

Hey, I'm having problems with the Toshiba ODD-DVD SD-R1412 optical drive on my eMac 1GHZ where it won't read or burn 90% of CDs or DVDs. The problems started happening after the 10.4.9 update. I've tried a laser lens cleaner and it didn't work. I'd upgrade the burner but it's gonna be a royal pain to have to crack this thing open. Any suggestions to get the drives mounting again? It shows up in Apple System Profiler.

Did you upgrade to 10.4.9 via Software Update or by downloading and running the stand-alone OS X Update Combo 10.4.9 (PPC)? if the former, try the later --- while not as consistiently useful a trick as in 10.2/10.3 days, running the full Combo updater has been known to help with various oddities that crop up after an OS update. Similarly, running Disk utility -> Repair permissions on the hard drive isn't really needed after running Apple updates, but it can't hurt, and if you've ever run a third-party installer that asked for an administrative password, you definitely want to run Repair Permissions.
How old are the blank discs you're trying to burn? How were the blanks stored? Refer to the NIST's Care and Handling of CDs and DVDs (people have reported in the past storing blank CDs on top of a radiator under a window getting direct sunlight; you may want to try a few blank discs from a different spindle (say by trading blank discs with friends or co-workers).
