Optical drive won't recognize any DVDs

I have a MacBook with Combo Drive, and lately it's showing up with the following data in the System Profiler:
ATA-Bus:
MATSHITACD-RW CW-8221:
Modell: MATSHITACD-RW CW-8221
Version: GA0K
Seriennummer:
Absteckbares Laufwerk: Nein
Protokoll: ATAPI
Einheiten-Nummer: 0
Socket-Typ: Intern
Low-Power-Polling: Ja
Ausschalten: Ja
It appears strange that there's no mention of DVD capabilities, and I recall there was some entries for that previously?
The drive stopped recognizing DVDs (Movie Disks, Recovery Disks, Snow Leopard Install DVD, Data Disks, etc.). All it does is trying to read them and then spitting the disk out some seconds later (about 30 sec). Restart, complete shut down and repairing permissions didn't help.
The notebook has been serviced a while ago, and the Top Case (handrest) has been replaced. Is it possible the service just missed to put a removed cable back in place or anything?
Any suggestions on next steps?

It appears that resetting the PRAM (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379) has worked.

  • Drive doesn't recognize ANY DVDs  or CDs?

Can someone explain real simple stupid like how to try to get my DVD/CD player to recognize disks again. I have a PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-103 in my G4 am using Tiger 10.4.3. After installing Tiger my computer has fallen to pieces and this is the last one. Now I am seriously considering cleaning out the entire machine and starting anew as I have a G5 on order. Problem is how can I even reinstall is my DVD drive won't recognize any disks? It spins and spins and spits out the DVD. It will read nothing.
    Thanks, Steph

One day the Pioneer DVR-106 drive I had in my G4 MDD stopped working it would accept disks. I tired everything. calls to apple care didnt help since this was an upgrade I added. I read everything on every site.
finally took the drive out of the computer and as I turned it over I heard a rattle. it had never rattled before. A search of posts on www.xlr8yourmac.com lead me to a posting about parts inisde the drive failing and in some cases some miniscule part could cause the drive to fail to read any disc. I was at my wits end and decided what the heck I was planning on Buying a new DVD-R drive anyway, so I opened the puppy up. I put everything out on my white utility table and took care to track every screw. To give me a reference point to how the drive looks and works I took apart a different CDROM drive that no longer worked. I noticed both units were similar internally.
well to make a long story short the culprit was a piece of dust that had got onto the Laser Lens and a piece of metal, some spring that lodged itself near the midle. It was magnetized and stuck to the drive middle area. I took the piece out and crossed my fingers. put it back together and decided to put it in an External 5.25" FW400 case which i have a few siting around for when I pull old HD's. Plugging in the now external Pioneer DVR-106 the unit turned on a-ok and voila the Mac recognized it and was able to read every DVd and CD and perfomred a succesflu burns for many DVD data discs and Audio CD's.
I posted my experience on xlr8yourmac.com and I am pretty sure I lucked out. But hey worse comes to worse, you can always pop that puppy open and see whats there. never know.
good luck anyway and you probably just better of to buy a new OEM Pioneer Superdrive, OWC aka macsales.com has some good bundles also Newegg.com has better deals for people who just want the Bare drive sans disks, cables, etc.

  • Drive won't read any dvd ejects it automatically

My drive Won't read any kind of DVDs, it keeps ejecting automatically after spinning for a while. it's been going on for a while now. please help!!!!!

You can try resetting the SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support
and PRAM How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
If that doesn't help you can try a cleaning disc or a quick shot of canned air. It's likely though that your drive has failed, it' not all that uncommon. It that is the case you can either replace it or have it replaced but it's far cheaper just to buy a usb external drive....just not Apples because it won't work with macs with a built in drive working or not. .

  • Macbook pro won't recognize any dvds

Everytime I put in a dvd....I've tried multiple dvd's my computer just sounds like it is spinning.  it does not recognize that there is a dvd I put in the slot thus the dvd icon does not show up on my desktop or anywhere else for that matter.  When I try to eject it with the eject button it will not respond.  I go into my icon of the dvd remote control and I try pushing play that way but then a black screen appears as if to play the dvd but instead it reads that this disc is not supported. This comment of no supported disc happens with every dvd I put into the dvd player. I end up having to go into my utilities then terminal and type some verbage about ejecting the disc and then it finally ejects after a few times of not working with that code.  So, any ideas what else I can try.  My warranty expired a few months back.  Thanks for any help.

Perhaps the optical drive lens is dirty.  Try the following:
    Use a DVD lens cleaning disk;
Shoot some compressed air into the slot.
Use a fine microfiber cloth (eye glasses cleaning cloth) wrap it around a business card and gently insert it into the slot.
    Ciao.

  • Satellite A30 CDRW-DVDRW (Mat****a) drive can't recognize any dvd

    Hi!
    I own a Satellite A30-303 with a optical drive MAT****A UJ811 (CDRW-DVDRW).
Everything worked just fine until last week the drive stopped reading any DVD. A error message saying that there is some problem with E/S is displayed. CDs are recognized with no problems though.
I tried to find updated drivers for the DVD driver but I couldn't get any.
Please does anyone have an idea of what that might be and how to solve it??
    Thank you!!
    Alex

    Hello
On this way it is always not simply to say what the problem can be. Like littco wrote check if there is some virus or any kind of malware. It is also possible that there is some technical problem and the drive can not calibrate on the right way.
I really dont know what you mean with E/S but you can try to remove the device from device manager and restart the unit. The last thing that you can try is to reinstall the unit using recovery CD. On this way the unit will be absolutely clean. If the problem persist there is obviously malfunction and the drive must be replaced.
By the way; have the same opinion like littco.
    Bye

The strange thing is it reads the CD , the only problem is with the DVDs.

had the exact same problem. Found by accident a solution on eBay.
    http://cgi.ebay.nl/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140220469470
--- part of the description ---
    Q) The drive keeps ejecting CDs and DVDs after installation?
    A) The screws which holds the drive chassis down are apparently too long for the drive. I suggest loosen them or screw the left drive rail in with a single screw in the front, removed the CD guide completely and screwed it all back together
The back screws should be loosened and / or left out completely if the problem persists.
    --- end part ---
So I decided to open my MBP and used the guides form ww.ifixit.com and loosened the screws as described above, closed my MBP.
The problem is now gone !

  • External optical drive won't play movie DVD

The SuperDrive on my very late 2009 MacBook (OS 10.5.8, Leopard) died, and I got a well-rated CD/DVD player/writer, Samsung SE-218BB) instead. It is meant to be compatible with my Mac. It works with things like Disk Warrior, but recently, I tried to play a video disk and got the message "Utilization error. A valid DVD player could not be found (-70012)." I've read a lot of other messages about this same error and have done what was recommended (throwing out the appropriate plist file from DVD player, for example). The messages were for other Mac models and/or versions of OS X, so maybe there is some advice that is specific to my Mac that would pertain? By the way, the DVD does show up in the Finder in a generic kind of way (that is, I think it is the kind/manufacturer of the disk, but it certainly isn't the name of what is on it), and when I click on that, it opens a bunch of separate files that don't seem to have much to do with watching the movie.
I also tried one of the tips given in the DVD Player manual (dragging the file to the DVD Player icon. All that did was make the DVD disappear. I had to restart,, with the mouse "button" (really not a button) on the Mac pressed, which released the DVD from the external drive.
I don't think the problem's with the hardware, since I can play Disk Warrior in it (that opens automatically after I insert the DVD. So what's with the movies? I've checked Software Update, and my software (DVD Player 7.7) is up to date for my Mac and OS version. I don't even know whether I should be using DVD Player for movies. (I haven't tried a music DVD, but I suspect that should open in some other app.) I don't remember playing movies on my computer when the internal SuperDrive was still working, so I can't make that comparison.
I hope you can help me. I'd be very sorry if I had to give up on playing the DVDs I now have. My VHS/DVD player-recorder used to be just fine, but my cable company set it back up wrong when they installed a new cable box, and now they want $50 even to look at it, so for now (until I find some company, say, the manufacturer of the player, that can tell me how to set it back up) the only way I can play and burn movies is with my computer.
    Thanks,
    jenny

I have discovered, no thanks to Samsung techs, what the problem is, and it might be revealing for others, as well. It seems that DVD Player, which is the app Apple provides in OS x for (naturally) playing videos, doesn't work with external drives if the computer has an internal drive – even when, as in my case, the internal drive is dead.
I have learned, however, of the existence of a couple of alternative, free applications that run video and audio disks with external optical drives, and one of them, at least (VLC), seems to be widely acclaimed. Does anyone know whether bypassing DVD Player could be a bad idea? There were some gripes from one or two reviewers about awkwardness with playing audio DVDs with iTunes, but I'm not sure what they meant when they said that you have to click on individual items in a selection. Would that mean, for example, having to click on each movement of a Mozart trio? That I couldn't play an entire album's contents of another kind of music without clicking on each song?
Getting the internal optical drive replaced would be prohibitive, even if the parts could be obtained, so I guess I'm stuck trying to deal with the external drive I have and finding the best replacement for DVD Player that I can find. The interesting thing is that the drive works beautifully with a MacBook Air I tried it with, so I guess that is because the Air doesn't have an internal drive?
Wouldn't you think that Samsung techs would know all this? The one I spoke to told me to make sure that my system preference for CDs and DVDs was set to open automatically with DVD Player and sent me all kinds of FAQs, plus a way to get an RMA number for a return. Not a word about difficulties with Macs having an existing internal drive. And all after spending a very long time talking with me about what was going on, what the error message was, and so on. I guess the message hasn't gotten to them.
I hope this information will be helpful to someone.

  • Optical drive won't burn DL dvd's

I dunno. It used to be more reliable before..... Optiarc stock dvd drive. says it can burn DVD+R DL, which I have a spindle of  right now (Verbatim Brand) . I've tried using "Burn" which worked for me before, and I start it up, put in the blank disc, and it just sits there and tells me it can't find a disc. Even just putting the disc in, should, hopefully, get some kinda reaction from my Mac Pro, but nothing. The OS is 10.7.5. with 6 Gigs of Ram, as far as I know, Burn is the latest version....
and Verbatim worked for me before...Haven't a clue at the moment. Funny thing though, when I used to click on "About this mac'  then "Storage", then the name and model # of the drive would come up, as well at what it would burn. Now it just says "Superdrive" and what it would burn. Weird, eh?
    thanks for any help
    John B

I can hear a scratching sound, like someone is scratching the disc with a needle.
The drive's head may be out of alignment.
Have it examined by a technician.

  • Optical drive won't take any disks

Good evening! I just got a Pavilion with a Core i5-2450M, on a Win 7 OS. When I tried to create my recovery media, I inserted first a  DVD-RW disc and later a regular DVD-R disc on its drive. Both options were suggested by the self-tutoring, step-by-step on screen menu. Unfortunately, neither of the disks were accepted by the optical drive....Finally, I tried to use a 500 GB external HD ("Book") through one one the USB ports. But again, I didn't succeed. Please advice as I am completely confused. Thanks in advance

Sorry you are having so much trouble with this, and that my recommendation was futile.Usually HP will send out Recovery Discs free if the process fails on a machine. You have phone or chat options available. Choose your country here>> Contact HP

  • Optical drive won't recognize discs, reports as "LATSHITADVD-R   TJ,865! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !"

I had this problem earlier, twice. Optical drive replaced under Apple Care. I suspect this is a software or firmware corruption based on the information that System Profiler returns to me, not really a hardware failure.
I'd like to be able to restore this driver, but don't really know where to go find it. Except in the Unix way. I do have a USB drive set up as a boot drive, so I can boot there and run some fixes.

Most probably not a firmware issue or virus.
Usually these problems are due to a dirty lens.
But before you try a lens cleaning kit, you might try a SMC reset (if you have an Intel Mini) or a PMU reset (if you have an older G4 PPC Mini). Be sure to use the correct reset procedure for your model of Mini! Applying a PMU reset to an Intel mini can cause real problems.
The G4 Minis have two USB ports on the back; the Intels have four USB ports.
See, for example, this post for an explanation of the two reset procedures:

Dunno why, but I think this has something to do with the Security Update 2009-001 Apple posted on its download platform a few days ago. Must have wrecked my SuperDrive somehow--and maybe yours, too--and I agree with Ryan when he says Apple hasn't been up to its reputation, lately. Maybe the market pressure got too much, and they started buying cheaper components...
Makes me wonder; imagine, you buy the brand new MacBook/MacBook Pro, with its encased battery and other fancy stuff, and something breaks down in the beast's belly. What do you do, then, bring it back to that some so-called Genius tells you to send it in to AppleCare.
    Naughty, naughty, Apple...

  • After SL-DVD drive won't read any dvd-ejects it after spinning some time

Yesterday I bought the SnowLeopard DVD in order to do the update of my Mac OS.
Right after inserting the DVD in the drive (MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8221) it started to have some problems with reading the DVD.
The Drive has stopped recognizing/reading any blank DVD media (and many recorded DVDs, including movie discs). It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out. The same media works fine in my Toshiba laptop.
I tried several times, but the drive isn't able to read the DVD and now has the same problem with other CD-Roms and DVD.
I am very suprised (and angry) about it, especially because I hardly use the drive.
As a lot of other people are having the same problem, there seems to be a structural problem with the drive and I think that Apple has to clearify if they are planning to do something and what.

Mine MacBook seems to be doing almost the same thing. The SL disk spins a bit then is ejected. It does the same thing with my first SL disk and the one Amazon sent as a replacement. I had the same trouble with the 10.5 Install disk purchased retail. Apple sent a replacement Non-retail disk and it worked. I can burn DVDs and read DVDs I've burned.
