Optical drive won't take any disks

Good evening! I just got a Pavilion with a Core i5-2450M, on a Win 7 OS. When I tried to create my recovery media, I inserted first a  DVD-RW disc and later a regular DVD-R disc on its drive. Both options were suggested by the self-tutoring, step-by-step on screen menu. Unfortunately, neither of the disks were accepted by the optical drive....Finally, I tried to use a 500 GB external HD ("Book") through one one the USB ports. But again, I didn't succeed. Please advice as I am completely confused. Thanks in advance

Sorry you are having so much trouble with this, and that my recommendation was futile.Usually HP will send out Recovery Discs free if the process fails on a machine. You have phone or chat options available. Choose your country here>> Contact HP

  • DVD-ROM Matshita SR-8187 Won't take any disks

So my PB won't accept any disks of any kind. It is still being recognized by the system as it shows up in the PB hardware info. So it's alive it just won't take my disks. No gears are moving even though I can push an entire disk into the slot. Recently the eject button won't register either although I couldn't get a disk in to eject anyway. I believe it's mechanical failure.
Anyone experience this and was able to fix it?
    thanks in advance

Hi, teatime. Given that System Profiler sees the drive, this is a long shot, but it costs nothing to check. Perhaps your drive's cable connection to the logic board has loosened just enough so one or two pins aren't making good contact, leaving the drive mostly inert.
Go to this page, choose the correct guide for your particular Powerbook model, and follow the instructions for removing the optical drive. They'll show you, before you actually take the drive out, where its cable is connected to the logic board. Press that cable's connector solidly down against the board, then put the bottom panel back in place and test again. If this makes no difference, you'll have to replace the drive — it has failed mechanically, as you suspect.

  • Optical drive is not reading any disks

    Hello,
whenever I insert a disk (cd or dvd) it does not show up in the finder or anywhere else.
Instead: Toast 7 starts and states that it is an empty dvd.
But Toast does recognize the size of the disk (4.5 GB or 7.2 GB for example).
To get rid of that optical disk I have to open terminal and type in "drutil tray eject". Nothing else worked.
The strange thing is, that this problem occured about a week ago and for some strange reason, it dissappeared yesterday. I was able to read several dvds and cds on Friday. Now the optical drive seems to be completly "ignorant" again.
    What can I do?
    Is the drive really broken?
    Thank you for your advice!

    Hello,
my DVD-Burner was replaced by the customer support of the Gravis AG in Cologne.
They also replaced my battery which they identified as defect (Actually, I didn't). The Macbook was less than two months old.
Nevertheless, I am happy to have it back and I would like to thank you for your hints and tips.

  • Optical drive won't recognize any DVDs

I have a MacBook with Combo Drive, and lately it's showing up with the following data in the System Profiler:
    ATA-Bus:
    MATSHITACD-RW CW-8221:
    Modell: MATSHITACD-RW CW-8221
    Version: GA0K
    Seriennummer:
    Absteckbares Laufwerk: Nein
    Protokoll: ATAPI
    Einheiten-Nummer: 0
    Socket-Typ: Intern
    Low-Power-Polling: Ja
    Ausschalten: Ja
It appears strange that there's no mention of DVD capabilities, and I recall there was some entries for that previously?
The drive stopped recognizing DVDs (Movie Disks, Recovery Disks, Snow Leopard Install DVD, Data Disks, etc.). All it does is trying to read them and then spitting the disk out some seconds later (about 30 sec). Restart, complete shut down and repairing permissions didn't help.
The notebook has been serviced a while ago, and the Top Case (handrest) has been replaced. Is it possible the service just missed to put a removed cable back in place or anything?
    Any suggestions on next steps?

It appears that resetting the PRAM (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379) has worked.

  • Disc Drive won't take any disc

I have a new MacBook Pro computer, its only a few months old. I have only used the disc drive once and it worked great! I tried using it again and it won't work at all now. It won't feed the disc into the computer. What can I do?

I'm not trying to sound condescending but have you tried pushing the disc in almost all the way? If so, try a reboot of the computer and give it another try. Still no luck? Try running the apple hardware test to see if it says there are any hardware issues.

  • Please help.  Optical drive won't take disc, imac won't boot up!

I installed Tiger 10.4.6 and it was working just fine, had done several restarts.
Then I put in an office for mac cd and it wouldn't boot up. I tried ejecting it wouldn't work. I finally got the disc out, but the computer wouldn't start.
I booted up in safe mode, i booted up in single user mode and did the fgsk thing. I got the I/0 error.
How can I fix this? I don't care if I lose everything on the computer, I just want it to work again.

Oh, that presents a problem. Try resetting the SMU.
Otherwise, I'm afraid you will need to take it in for repair.

  • Optical drive won't read certain discs?

Hello, this is my first post in the community and I am a novice with computers. I bought my iMac in 2010 at Apple and it has been the best computer I have ever owned. But for some reason starting today the optical drive won't read any type of cd's like a user's manual or software install disc. It tries but just ejects it back out. Now the strange part is I can put any dvd disc to play a movie and plays it perfectly with no problem at all. Has anyone had this happen to them or any thought on what is wrong. My wife has a macbook and hers works fine and I checked her system preferences for cd's/dvd and they are the same. I a running 10.6.8 OS. Thanks

The iMac supports the following CD types if it is one of these types and still won't read then it sounds like a CD hardware or software driver problem. If you re-load the software driver and it still doesn't work then I would then suggest you take it to an Apple store for repair.

  • My cd drive won't accept any cd

My cd drive won't accept any CDs or DVDs it's like there's something blocking it from entering, and it does these funny nose everytime I turn on my Mac book pro......... This problem started today after I was trying to insert a disk in, at first it was accepting the disk then spitting it out after 2 time it just wouldn't accept it anymore....... I have a Mac book pro mid 2010 processor 2.4 ghz intel core 2 duo Memory 4gb 1067 MHz ddr3 software OS X 10.8.2 (12c60)

Are you sure that there's nothing stuck in the optical drive? Try the below eject methods to see what happens.
Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
      1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
left mouse button until the disc ejects.
      2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
      3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
      4. Press COMMAND-E.
      5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in
your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
            /usr/bin/drutil eject
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • Optical Drive won't power on

    Hi everyone,
I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W520, and my optical drive won't power on. The problem is that it is by default set on "safe to remove", and when I want to use it, I have to remove it first and then put it back. BUT that won't work unless I reboot the machine after removal. I searched on this forum, but I did not find the solution for so far.
I found some topics on the optical drive, which describe that one can toggle an option for activating the optical drive in Power Manager, which I can not find in my version (6.36).
Is there any solution for this? I would like the optical drive to be powered on by default, and not in the "safe to remove" mode, so I can use it any time without having to remove the optical drive and rebooting the system.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jeroen

Well....it may be fine for you to accept an inferior item, not I. I paid for a unit that was supposed to be fully operational and work as designed. I will not accept having to reboot every time I want to put a CD or DVD into my computer! That's like having to restart your car so the headlights work. Even if one doesn't drive at night, you would still expect the headlights to work ANYTIME you want them without the extra steps. I know "where" the issue is and I know "why" the issue is BUT unfortunately, there is not a fix I can find. Between uninstalling and reinstalling drivers and applications and etc. I give up. They will replace my unit according to Lenovo, with a brand new laptop. Should this one have the same issue, I will be disputing my CC charge, and sending the unit back to them for a full and complete refund. I wish I had a copy of WIn8 or Win7 without Lenovo's proprietary software embedded. I bet the unit would work as designed then, but to have them rewrite or add software with hooks directly into the core system is a recipe for disaster. I encourage you to do something about yours also. The more people that ALLOW this "type" manufactured fleecing, the more it will occur.
I guess I will find out just how well this replacement process works.

  • Optical drive won't eject and can't power off from Apple menu!

I have a Quicksilver that has almost always acted great but ever since I physically moved the machine to another room I've been having intermittent problems. Here's a quick summary:
    -Overall more sluggish performance
-Occasionally the optical drive won't eject and I have to restart the whole machine. (I did replace the drive a couple years ago but have never had any problems until now).
-I can no longer shut down/restart from the apple menu, i have to push the power button in.
I used to get device removal error messages at inappropriate times but that seems to have stopped since I reseated my USB 2.0 card. Here's a list of the other remedies I have tried:
    -Repair permissions
-Make sure all cards/RAM seated properly
-Replaced PRAM battery (year was displaying 1970)
    -Ran DiskWarrior
    -Re-imaged entire boot drive
I can't remember if I've tried zapping the PRAM because this problem has been going on for about five months. None of this was an issue before I carted the machine into another room so hopefully I haven't dislodged anything. Also, I notice a lot of static build-up in the room despite the hardwood flooring. Perhaps that could be an issue and if so, any suggestions?
I was dreading that it could be my logic board, any advice?
    thanks,
    Jesse

  • Tecra M4 - DVD drive doesn't recognize any disk under Vista

    Hi,
after the installation of Vista my dvd drive doesn't recognize any disks !
No upgrade from XP! It was a clean Vista installation.
I found several links about the registry entries upper and lower filter this entries doesn't exist in my registry under the class CDROM.
I tested the drive under XP it works fine and recognizes everything.
Drivers are correctly installed no problems in the device manager is prompted.
So i have no idea how to get it working, seems to be a Vista problem
Could any one help me ? I'm really frustrated about this
    Thanks for your help

    Maybe this helps:
    - Remove the CD/DVD drive from the device manager.
    - Then access the registry and remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
    - Then reboot the notebook
But what happens exactly? What disks are not recognized?

  • Drive won't read any dvd ejects it automatically

My drive Won't read any kind of DVDs, it keeps ejecting automatically after spinning for a while. it's been going on for a while now. please help!!!!!

You can try resetting the SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support
and PRAM How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
If that doesn't help you can try a cleaning disc or a quick shot of canned air. It's likely though that your drive has failed, it' not all that uncommon. It that is the case you can either replace it or have it replaced but it's far cheaper just to buy a usb external drive....just not Apples because it won't work with macs with a built in drive working or not. .

My optical drive will not read any music cds or recognize a blank cd. it might read some data cds. what is wrong with it and how can i fix it?

The optics might be dirty. Try running a cleaning CD through it and see if that makes a difference.
If not, it will have to be replace.
