Optical drive won't work, won't eject

I've tried the namual eject hole at the side of the slot but for some reason, perhaps having to do with my rplacement of the hd, there is no spring eject whizmo to meet my probing paper clip. I am trying to load driver software for a Wacom graphire program. the slot puled the disk in, and there began its whirring. It did not read the disk. After a while the whirring stopped, still no cd icon on desktop. If I restart the computer, the whirring will resume, and then stop after a while. The "eject disk' option in the finder menu is grayed. Any other way to issue a command to the computer to eject the disk? Then...would one have suggestions about fixing the problem? Am I going to have to take the thing apart and get a net optical drive, and if so, how bad a job will that be?

Hey I'm new but I was given an iMac DV+ with a CD stuck inside AND supposedly my iMac was dead or broken...
If you took the time to investigate for an answer in the support documents you would have seen that they had a suggestion there..
1) turn you iMac on and at the sametime as it powers on press the manual eject with a paper clip (on the rightside - slot loading unit) this shoudl eject the CD.
2) But if it doesn't they suggest that you insert a CD part way in and it will dislodge the CD that's in there already.
Please go and look at the document for yourself for the exact description...
I did this and the CD eventually ejected slowly.... Do not insert your CD all the way in just part way... as instructed by Apple.
Hope this helps...

  • Optical drive doesn't work after installing itunes 11.0.5.5

After updating to iTunes 11.0.5.5 my optical drive does not work. I have put the same CD in another PC and it works fine. When I right click on the optical disc drive in 'Computer' I get the error message "Windows cannot access the specified device, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item." If a CD is in the drive, the drive will either keep popping open or not open at all on its own. The CD will not open in any other player such as Windows Media Player either.

    I read this article:
    http://www.gearsoftware.com/wiki/index.php/CD/DVD_drives_disappear_after_install ing_iTunes
I did not have any AFS drivers.
This is what I did and my optical drive is now working:
    1. Backed up iTunes
    2. Unistalled iTunes
    3. Tried to install iTunes 10.7 for Windows 64
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/#itunes
    4. When iTunes tried to launch I received the message "iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes"
    5. My computer would not recongize the optical drive at all now
    6. I re-installed iTunes 11.0.5 for Windows 64
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/#itunes
    7. All my iTunes data is there and my optical drive works now
Note: I should clarify that before uninstalling iTunes 11.0.5 my optical drive worked sometimes. It would play maybe one song, both in iTunes and Windows Media Player and then stop working. The drive would also pop open on its own whether there was a disc in there or not. Also sometimes I had to manually open the drive with a paper clip.

If your Macbook Pro (MBP) came preinstalled with OS X Lion (10.7), you can use Internet Recovery to reinstall it.
You will need an Internet connection.
Restart your Mac using Command+Option+R until you see a spinning globe. This will boot into Apple's server and load their Recovery HD.
From the OS X Utilities menu, select Reinstall OS X. You should see a Lion logo to the left of this option.
If your MBP came preinstalled with OS X Snow Leopard you will need the DVD and an external CD/DVD drive to use to install it.
You may also be able to put your MBP into Target Mode with another Mac running a version of OS X that is compatible with your MBP. From that other Mac download OS X from the App Store and point to your MBP (Target Mode) to install to. I've never tried this but it sounds like it might work.

since installing mountain lion on my late 2008 aluminum macbook the cd/dvd super drive isnt working won't play or import media/music just ejects cd.
    Any Ideas ?

Have you set System Preferences/CDs & DVDs to what you want to happen? This helped one person.
Here is an Apple support article, but the information is pretty basic:

  • Dvd player won't work...ejects them

My dvd player will not work.  Everytime I put one in, it spits it right back out.

You may be able to get the bottom replaced by Apple at no cost - some of the newer white MacBooks had this issue.
    More information on that here
As for replacing the drive, here's a guide for doing the replacement yourself, and here is a link for a replacement drive.
Looks like the cost is $90 right now.
You can get a portable external for ~$55, like this LaCie from OWC.
With regard to your current optical drive - make sure the discs you've tried work OK in other computers or in stand alone DVD players. If they do, that definitely indicates yours is dead or dying.
CDs may still work though so if you have any CDs handy, it would be worth trying a few to see if it will accept them.
Hopefully this helps you a bit - if you have more questions, please do ask!

  • DVD optical drive no longer works with Windows under bootcamp or parallels

For some strange reason, the DVD optical drive- Optiarc 5680 on my 27" iMac, no longer works anymore with Windows under Parallels or Bootcamp. It used to work perfectly fine before, but now it just shows up with a yellow exclamation mark under Device Manager and Code 39 "Windows cannot load the device driver..."
The DVD drive continues to still work fine with OSX. But it won't work anymore under Windows via Parallels or bootcamp, despite trying to uninstall the optical device drivers, update, reinstall, etc. Anybody else experiencing this or have any ideas?

Finally found the solution for anybody else who runs into this problem. It was solved by doing a registry mod in Windows from this site:
    http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php#problems
described in “My CD drives have vanished (from Explorer, Device Manager, etc.)”
After applying the registry changes the DVD optical drive worked instantly again with Windows....sigh...guess I can't blame the Mac on this one.

  • The optical drive on my Macbook white keeps ejecting DVD's?

So am trying to upgrade to snow leopard on my older intel based macbook white, but the disc just ejects, first I thought it was a problem with the disc, but I tried with another DVD and did the same thing. CD's seem to work fine.
Tried the disc utility repair and safe mode and all that but no joy. So I also have a newer aluminium macbook which works great, so I was wondering if it was at all possible to use the optical drive on my newer macbook to install the disc on my older macbook using the remote disc facility? I know its for the Air but is there a way to make it work for my non air macbook. I wanna see if this is possible before I go to the expense of getting an external DVD drive or even getting it fixed by apple which im sure is gunna costa an arm and a leg!
Or is there something else I can try to get my dvd section of the optical drive working again?
    Many thanks
    Hannah

If I were you, I'd uninstall Power Manager entirely. I don't particularly like any of Lenovo's software. Each and every one has caused me problems so I've gotten rid of them all.

  • Optical Drive has stopped working since upgrading to ATI 9800

Due to hardware failure of my ATI Radeon 9600 I decided to upgrade to the 9800, which requires (in G5's) a four pin split power supply to be connected to the optical drive.
I have turned my computer on and successfully receive signal out to my monitors, but thus discovered I can't eject the disk tray!
I opened up the computer again and all the connection seem fine.....
Is anyone familiar with installing the 9800?
    G5 (duel 2.0 Ghz)   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   1GB RAM

    Thanks for both your responses.
I am going to restore the system with the other video card and try to get things back to normal, but I did a few more troubleshoots.
The optical drive seems to be functioning. I started up my computer with the side panel opened and I moved the drive a few inches out in order to press the manual eject button. I was able to open the drive bay and close it by pressing the eject button on my keyboard. (That is the first time the keyboard worked.)
I closed the drive bay with an installer CD in it but the CD wouldn't read. I restarted holding the C key down to try and boot off the CD drive- nothing. So I guess the drive isn't working....but yet it seems to be powered????
Do you think this is really only a bad cable? When installing the new Video Card I had a very hard time detaching the 4 pin power supply from the optical drive. Could I have damaged something?
It wouldn't surprise me if now my optical drive was broken. I have had to replace everything on my computer since it reached three years old.

  • Could PRAM reset and other reset cause optical drive not to work?

My Superdrive on my Powerbook G4 12-inch was working normally, reading and burning CDs and DVDs, until the very first time I attempted to use it following a P-RAM reset and one other reset (I forget the name) done with Applecare tech support, over the phone. Now when I insert a CD or DVD, it sounds like the computer tries to read it, but discs are ejected after about 30 seconds, never having shown up on desktop.
To summarize, could the above-described resets have caused the problem with my optical drive?
    Thank you!

    Womanhattan:
The article Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM explains what the PRAM is and what resetting can do. There is no mention of the optical drive in it.
I don't know what caused your optical drive to start rejecting media, but I suspect it is not related to PRAM.
    Good luck.

  • Optical drive does not work completely.

My optical drive stopped working today. It is not regonized by the system and does not show up in the ATA Bus in System Profiler.
I resetted the PRAM and PMU, then checked and the drive was still not found. I then put my computer to sleep and when I woke it up, the drive was there in the ATA Bus list but information was missing. Now it is not there at all.
There is a disc stuck in the drive. It will not eject. If I restart the computer holding the trackpad button down (to force eject the disc), the system stays on a completely gray screen and never finishes booting.
The disc was having problems being read on another computer, which is why I put it in the drive. I'm not sure why this has happened, but if anyone has any ideas or tips that they can give me, i'd be more than willing to listen to them.
Also, I have an eDrive that I made with TechTool Pro, and when I boot up in that the drive is not recognized either. This makes me think that there is a bad connection or a hardware problem. But how is that possible in a Powerbook?
I do not want to call Apple because I bought my Powerbook two years ago and do not have anymore warranty time left. I can open the machine and look at the drive, but I am guessing that I will not see anything special and it will look normal. I really don't feel like buying another drive, they shouldn't break after two years.
Maybe there is dirt in it or something?
When I open Toast, it freezes and never opens. I have to restart my computer to get Toast to close.
I burned a DVD last night.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not sure if I'm threadjacking here, which probably means I am, but that is not my intent.
I have seen scattered posts related to this problem and have this problem myself with my 2 1/2 yr old Al PB. Intermittently, the optical drive is not recognized by the system, sometimes with a disc in the drive, sometimes without. System profiler will sometimes list it on the ATA bus, sometimes not. At times it is noted by System Profiler as on the ATA bus, but if I select "disc burning", System profiler either grinds away and never finds anything or says there is no supported device. At one point it froze while playing a DVD and did not recognize the presence of a disc or the drive. A reset of one form or another always corrects the problem (often only after multiple attempts), but this happens several times a week and I shouldn't need to reset PRAM or PMU that often in my opinion. Sometimes just a restart does the trick, but it's all a bit of a pain. No other issues to speak of. Any thoughts? Thanks.

  • Optical drive no longer working

    Hi to everyone,
my optical drive seems to have some problems at writing to CDs, now.
Every time I try to burn, I will get an error message:

The Combo drive will still read DVDs and CDs.
I used 4 different kinds of blank CDs, always the same error.

May someone tell me what the problem is? How can I resolve this?
    Thanks in advance to everyone,

Repair needed for my MacBook - ComboDrive has been replaced by an internal SuperDrive. Everything is working, now.
ComboDrive was going to die. Problems caused by too much heat. Also re-installed FanControl for heating problems.

  • I have a iMac g4 swivel and it seems that the ethernet port and the optical drive are not working.

Is there any troubleshooting I can try, short of replacing everything?
I really love this version of the iMac and want to use it in place of my eMac for some home business inventory and printing work.
I need the ethernet to work because the printer can only connect that way.  It's a great laserjet from HP (1998 version) and it works like a champ.
As for the disc drive... I would love to install office or iwork but as I said nothing seems to mount.  I also can't upgrade it to Tiger.  It's running Panther and I can live with that I suppose.
I have wondered if I could exchange parts from the eMac (Motherboard, Optical Drive, Hard Drive) since  its bulkyness takes up so much room.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
And yes I have a modern macbook pro as well.

You can use the dvd drive on your macbook via target disk  mode.
"Installing OS X 10.4 'Tiger' on DVD-Challenged Macs Using FireWire Target Disk Mode"
    http://lowendmac.com/misc/06/0710.html
    1) Do you have a router?  Do you communicate to the internet via wifi?
connect the printer to a router with an ethernet port. This will be an input eithernet port.
You may need to change ip addresses on your printer or on your network.
    2) usb to ethernet dongle
Apple USB EN Adapter Network adapter - Hi-Speed USB
    http://www.google.com/products/catalog?oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:unofficial &client=firefox-a&q=usb+to+ethernet+dongle&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=1255179391 6678370799&sa=X&ei=L7xdTsDTGsXz0gHdvazcAg&ved=0CF8Q8wIwAw
verify that the dongle will work on your machine.  Any drivers needed?
    3) You can firewire to for TCP/IP ( ethernet) to comunicate between macs.  Connect your printer to your macbook. Use firewire to communicate between macs.  Enable printer sharing.
