Optical Drive Wont Open

Hi all,
I have a Mac Pro which has just had Leopard installed. My problem is that the optical drive wont open up normally anymore. Pressing the eject button only shows the eject symbol on the screen however does nothing to the drive itself.
The only way I have managed to open the drive is by going to iTunes and selecting the eject option in the control menu. Also by pressing the button at the front of the drive works too.
I had this issue when I had Tiger installed so when I upgraded to Leopard I was hoping the issue would of resolved it self. Which it didn't.
Is there anything that someone can suggest that will help me out?
GuhBeattie

I leave my finger on long enough to see the eject symbol pop up and disappear. Still doesnt work.
And now I have 2 ways to open my optical drive. Via iTunes andd by reseting my mac and keeping my finger on the mouse button.
Not really practical and is annoying when I have so many programs open that I don't want to have to close.
I will be ringing apple tech support to see if they can help me resolve this issue. I will keep you updated.

  • How can I get my optical drive to open?

For no reason I can think of, suddenly I can't open my optical drive. Any suggestions?

On the Mac, you can add an Eject button to your menu bar so that you can ejects CDs and DVDs easily. To add this, open a Finder window and select your hard drive under the "Devices" section on the left. Then navigate to the System -> Library -> CoreServices -> Menu Extras directory. You'll see a file called Eject.menu. If you double click on this file, it'll add an Eject button to your menu bar. Then you can open or close the disc drive using the menu control. (It's a small upward pointing triangle with an underline)
Or you can close it manually.

  • Is it possible to leave the optical drive tray open?

    Hello -
I'd like to know if there's any way to have the optical drive tray stay open when shutting down a Mac Pro (PowerPC version, running Leopard)? It's for security reasons in my office to make sure no media is left in after the computer has been shut down.
    Thank you.

AppleTV2 has no 'volume control' over optical - it either sends a Dolby Digital 5.1 stream for movies encoded with this or a stereo linear PCM signal.  AppleTV1 used to send stereo audio as 44.1 kHz 16 bit (CD quality) whatever it was originally  (MP3/AAC/AIFF/WAV), AppleTV2 mucks around and sends a DAT quality signal of 48 kHz 16 bit over optical which yoru Tv may not be able to decode.
Like Rudegar I'd consider the HD4200m as perhaps the model number - some older TVs had the same connections on teh back for a given range, just on lower specced models the connections were not actually connected/enabled.
Another consideration would be whether or not the optical port on the TV is optical out (would not work) rather than  optical in.
The lack of analogue connections on AppleTV2 is a nuisance.  Send some feedback:

Won't help current hardware and doubtful any new design but you never know.

I transferred my iTunes music library to an external hard drive (Toshiba 1T) and had set the media folder location in Preferences to the new location on the external drive.
When you move the library, you don't set the location to the new location, It is already set there.
Yet, occationally the external drive "shuts down" even though the computer goes to sleep and iTunes cannot find the music library.
Exrternal (and internal) drives usually shut down when the computer goes to sleep.
Make sure the drive is ready before launching iTunes.

  • L305-s5933 dvd drive wont open

    hi.
Well I've been experiencing problems with the dvd drive in my laptop last week, I dont know when this problem started because I don't use the dvd drive very often but the problem is that the dvd drive won't open after the computer has been on for one hour or more, when the computer has only a few minutes turned on, I can open the drive and read any dvd/cd I want, but after one hour the freaking drive just stop responding to the eject button. Trying to eject using Windows software won't work either. The only way to make the drive work again is to turn off the laptop and turn it on again.
a few weeks ago I made a clean install of windows 7, so I'm guessing I forgot to install a driver or something?
    just to sumarize my situation:
-Dvd drive won't open after the computer has been on for a while. (Doesn't repond to  eject button or windows eject command)
-I have to turn off the computer and turn it on again to make the dvd drive work again
-I'm not sure if this problem started after i installed windows 7.
    Any help?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Just for the record.
The problem I was having with the DVD drive was caused because I didn't install an AHCI/PCIIDE patch that's is included in the drivers and applications recovery DVD. After installing this patch (is actually a registry patch) the DVD is working just fine, doesn't matter how long I use the laptop.
Even tough windows 7 supports natively AHCI mode for SATA devices,  DVD-rw drives in some (not all) Toshiba laptops have problems in the long run if you don't apply the registry patch.
I hope my experience helps others experiencing this problem.
    bye.

  • Itunes on external hard drive wont open in Win7

I have my itunes stored on an external hard drive using Windows XP. I have just changed my computer to a Win7 version, and now I cant access my library. I can see it there but cannot find the correct path to it. I have been able to access it on my old XP PC so it still works OK, but frustrated not being able to get it to work on a later OS/computer.

Do you have the itunes database file from XP also on the exHD?
    iTunes Library.itl
Copy it from XP onto the exHD.
Then connect the exHD to Win 7, do a shift-start of itunes.
Which means, press *AND HOLD* the shift key while starting itunes, keep pressing until you get the prompt. Then browse to the exHD and choose the ITL file you copied over.

Does the upper door slide down easily if you try to open it with your finger? If you try to open the upper drive while the door is opened does the tray move at all? Does it hit one side of the opening?
Was the lower drive just installed? Were the jumpers set to cable select, slave or master on the lower drive? Same question about the upper drive.

  • I removed my optical drive because i added an ssd hard drive. when i plug in the dvd to usb it will not play from the macbooks dvd program. the error message is there was an initialization error, a valid drive could not be found.

I can go into disk utility and see the optical drive and mount what ever cd is in the drive and quicktime will play it. but i would like to have the dvd program recognize the optical drive and open what ever is in it.

Freakin amazing! I installed a new 1TB Samsung SSD in my main hard drive slot and moved my old hard drive into my DVD slot and moved my DVD to an external DVD case and it would never work with movies, only software disks. I have Late 2011 Macbook Pro running Mavericks with 1TB Samsung SSD and a 512GB HDD in the DVD slot with my DVD in an OWC external DVD case.
I tried this trick but at first, this did not work because OxED was saving the new file as a text file and not a unix file. I was perplexed until I read the comments below the article and found the tip to use Terminal to change the saved file to a Unix file. I have never used Terminal before and I had no clue what I was doing, but I just followed the steps to a T and it worked. It took two tries with Terminal.
The comment mentioned "Code:" so I typed that along with the rest and it didn't work. I tried it again and this time just typed
chmod +x (with a space after the x) then dragged and dropped the saved dvd file from my Desktop into Terminal and hit enter. Worked great. Thank you. I have my DVD player back.
I also had to play around with some permissions and I had to remove the original file completely from the "A" folder, before I dropped the new file back in.
Took a little work, but I am back up and running. Thanks to all who contributed to this and yet OWC definitely needs to have all this in their manual or even provide a disk or software download that does this automatically.
Here is the trick: http://macenstein.com/default/2011/07/how-to-get-your-external-super-drive-worki ng-in-lion/
Be sure that the new file saves as a Unix file. If it doesnt save as Unix, you will need to:
    Open Terminal.
    Type:    chmod +x
…with a space at the end (and do NOT press enter yet).
Then, drag the saved file you want to change from whereever it is saved and drop it on top of the Terminal window. The file path and filename should automatically fill in (and you should ensure that there’s a space between “+x” and the file path).
    Press enter.

  • External hard drive isnt opening on iMac

Hi everyone, I was advised to post a different discussion instead of having two questions in one, (good tip thank you)
So here is my second questions.
My other problem is that i want to get all my photos onto the imac.  My hard drive wont open on my imac - (buffalo HD-PXT500U2/B)  it recognises its there but wont aloow me to actually open it to view any file. (Also mac compatible.)
I called apple support again to see if there was anything i can do, the only thing they suggested was that i have to reformat my hard drive (which would mean loosing all the info on there).  They suggested putting all my info on my PC, reformatting the EHD, then sucking up all the info again on my EHD, then giving it to my imac.  Apart from the fact that i dont think my PC could handle 500 GB of info on it at this stage - this would take days.  (currently to download 15GB of data takes an hour or so)
I asked about migration assistant or something similar which was at my start up (i didnt use it) which says it can transfer info from PC to mac - they said it wouldnt work, although i am still unsure as to why.
I have used google again to see what i can find as a fix, but its a mindfield out there and my brain is beginning to get fried - i have spent days trying to find out what fixes there are.  I cant even find migration assistant anymore on the imac ( i dont know where it lives)
Please please please help me as I am just about ready to throw in the towel - it shouldnt be this hard or this much of a headache should it?
I am trying to start up my own photographic business which is why I was advised to make the switch, but I am already 2 weeks behind on editing as I am constantly waiting on the delivery, fix, help to get my imac up and running properly.
I do need simple step by step instructions as I am new to mac.
    Thanks so much for reading

Reading between the lines, basically you have a drive that's Windows-formatted, that already has a lot of files on it, which you want to read with your Mac.
The usual drive format for Windows drives is NTFS, which in theory Macs can read, but not write to. An older format is FAT, which Macs can read and write to. Since you're not able to even read the drive, I'm a little puzzled.
When you attach the drive to the Mac, what happens? Do you see a drive icon appear on the desktop? If not, make sure that the Finder is set to display drives. Go to the Finder menu, click Preferences, General, and make sure external drives are set to show on the desktop.
If you still don't see it, open Disk Utility (in your Applications/Utilities folder). Do you see the drive there? If so, click on its partition/volume name (not the drive model line, there should be another line beneath it which displays the drive "name" that you've given it). The information at the bottom of the screen should tell you what format the volume is.
If it's NTFS, you could TRY installing Paragon NTFS. As I say, in theory with NTFS you certainly should be able to read the drive, but it might help. Worse case, you're out $20.
Failing that, does this hard drive have any kind of protection or encryption built into it? Some drives have proprietary encryption which relies on software that you install on your system. In that case, you would only be able to read it from your Windows system. If that's the case, maybe you can turn the encryption off on the WIndows side, then try again connecting to your Mac.

The DVD Drive wont open. Any Idea?
Thought the Eject-mechanism are out of work...

Okay, i removed the ODD and check out what happen. The devicecable cames between the ODD-case and the device himself. I think the ejectmechanism was to weak to overcome the obstacle.
The reason i think was a to fast/hard push back. So be careful guys! ^^

  • Upgraded Hard Drive, now Combo drive wont recognize. HELP!!!!

I upgraded my hard drive, installed the os-X (10.3.9 i think) and the cd combo worked fine, removed the combo to do somthing for the laptop (installed it in the iBook), and now when I put another combo drive (same model different drive) into the mini, the mini doesn't even recognize that there is a drive at all,
it will take a disk, but wont eject or mount.
    what should I do?
should I put the original drive into the mini?
Also, i cant re-install OS-x because the optical drive wont mount in the mini, and the ibook says that It cannont use the software with the version that is installed on it (10.4.somthing)

There isn't a BIOS in G4 Mac systems - in essence, rather than having a pre-determined configuration, the system checks for existent components at startup such that if the drive in the system was recognised and had a viable driver, it would be functional.
First thing to do is check whether the system sees the drive at all. Go to the Apple menu and select 'About this Mac'. Then click the 'More info' button when the dialog box gives the MacOS version, processor and memory.
The click the 'ATA' tab on the left. You should see two entries - the first being the internal hard drive which will be shown in the lower portion of the right-hand pane by model and capacity. If the combo drive is not showing there with any entry (ie, there is only one ATA device, the internal HD) then more than likely the drive is not connected correctly as Boece has suggested. If it IS listed there and correct by model number, then it may be that the drive itself is faulty or the system's power management unit isn't controlling it correctly.
If the later is the case, a PMU reset may help. Try the following:
    - Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    - Wait 10 seconds.
    - Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
    - Let go of the power button.
    - Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.

  • H430 Optical Drive Drivers

While attempting to play a DVD, I came to the realization that the optical drive is not showing up among my devices!  Sure enough, when I have Windows 7 try to troubleshoot the problem, it is telling me to download the appropriate drivers for the Optical Drive.  (Bit embarrassing as I've had this machine for almost 2 months now!)
The optical drive will open and close with pushing the button, but that's about it.  "Add a Device" does nothing.  Here's what Windows 7 tells me:
There is a problem with the driver for CD-ROM Drive. The driver needs to be reinstalled.
    Device information
    Name:ID:Error code:
    CD-ROM Drive
    IDE\CDROMTSSTCORP_DVD-RW_SH-216AB________________LE03____\4&1314406&0&0.1.0
    19
Windows 7 was not able to update or install the driver from its end.
No problem, I'll try the Lenovo site!  I go to "support," "drivers and software" and enter in that my machine is the H430 Desktop.
Unfortunately, I can't find any optical drive drivers among the list of available drivers for the H430.
Here's what I find for H430 drivers from this site:
    Audio
    Camera and Card Reader
    Chipset
    Ethernet adapter
    Keyboard
    Others
    TV Tuner
    USB device
    Video
    Wireless LAN
Am I missing something here?  Is what I'm looking for hidden among those options?  Do I have to check out some 3rd party site to download the driver?  Is the darn thing just not plugged in all the way?
    Please help!
