Optical flow for speed change clips

Im just found out about optical flow. what speeds is it worth using it on?
Ive got some clips that I want to play between 40% and 80%.
just asking because in the tutorial I saw they where using it on a clip at 10%
thnaks for any advise

I see two issues.
One is that your source footage is 15 frames per second. Most video that iMovie sees is 30 frames per second or 25 frames per second.
Second issue is that you don't appear to have the Apple Intermediate Codec component installed on your system. When the footage can't be speed adjusted natively, iMovie will convert the footage to Apple Intermediate Codec at 30 frames per second so that the speed adjustment can be applied.
So, you need to reinstall iMovie from the original iLife 09 disks. If iLife 09 was preinstalled on your Mac, reinstall it from the Leopard Disks that came with your Mac.
You are missing the file called AppleIntermediateCodec.component in the MacintoshHD/Library/QuickTIme/ folder.

  • Compressor encoded speed change clip with echo as motorboat sound

Took me two days to troubleshoot, through trial and error and process of elimination, why Compressor encoded an audio clip that had been speed changed and echo applied to it -- as rapid MOTORBOAT sound! Project is a 5.1 mix. Since STP3 won’t accept speed change clips, after I completed mix in STP I placed speed changed clips on FCP timeline below the exported STP 5.1 mix with the FCP audio tracks for that clip assigned to channels 1 & 2 for the fronts and channels 5 & 6 for the rears. The clip on 5 & 6 was duplicated and identical in every way to the clip on channels 1 & 2. Only the dupe clip on 5 & 6 did Compressor encode as motorboat. The identical clip on 1 & 2 encoded correctly. Both clips were set to play at same time since I wanted the effect to be on fronts and rears simultaneously. I could not get the motorboat sound to play back from either FCP timeline or Compressor preview window. Only after encode and burn to DVD did it show up. Why would Compressor introduce such artifacts on one of the clips and not both – if it’s going to do it at all – which it shouldn’t? Any ideas? I have other such effects throughout the project where I duped a speed changed clip with an effect applied to it and set it to play on fronts and rears simultaneously and Compressor encoded those correctly.

Well, it's a little late, but this is one of the reasons to have your startup drive cloned so you can restore it to a working state if an update, upgrade or install sends things south.

Have you tried resetting your fcp preferences

If this doesn't fix the problem, you could try sending the shot to motion.  You could aslo try changing the speed in the motion tab of the viewer.

  • Apply optical flow to like 50 clips (batch filter)????

Is that possible? Maybe I should have posted this in motion, but i just dont know. I have like 50 clips that I want to slow down, is there a way to add like a batch filter for optical flow to slow them all down at once or do i have to do them one by one in motion or something?

    From here:
"Flexible retiming controls in Compressor let you speed up, slow down, or fit your video to a time duration."
Adjust "retiming" to suit. Build a Compressor droplet.

  • Does motion 5 have optical flow for slow mo?

    Hey
Does motion 5 have the optical flow option to create a slow motion effect ?
    Cheers

    Thanks for the help,
I am also wondering can you apply this in motion 5, then render/export the clip to be edited in imovie '11 or do I also need FCP X ?

  • Timecode filter off one frame for speed reversed clips

Is this a known issue in Premiere Pro CC? I'm using version 7.2.1 (4).
The video clip in V1 has a reverse speed change applied, and the timecode filter is off by one frame. Or maybe the source overlay is off by one frame? Which should I trust?

Another clip in the sequence has a timecode filter error much greater. See attached screenshot. the timeline clip is sped up 694.28%, the source timecode overlay reports 09:25:35:14 and the timecode filter says 09:25:35:07.

  • Woek flow for PO change Event

    Hi,
I'm developing WF for PO change event based on Purch doc type = NB.
I have provided the start events and created WFcontainer elements and generated the bindings for the same.
Noe the problem is, i have to specify the start condition as Purch doc Type = NB.
when i click on the conditions button i'm not getting the Purch doc type parameter.
has any one come across this problem.
    Regards,

Check if this can help you....
Goto Basic Data (Hat Symbol) in workflow Builder.
    Goto Start Events.
Click on the 3rd column for start conditions settings.
Expand the Container -> Expand Purchase Order.
Expand Functional Methods -> Expand PO Details.
In that you will find Document Type.
    &Purchase Order.BUS2012.GETDETAIL(_RESULT='POHEADER').Document Type& Would be the expression.

  • Optical flow equivalent for slo-mo?

    Hi all...
I have been very interested in discussions about really amazing slo-mo footage, and I did post here recently about my 60fps 7-d footage and how to work with it. I did a test and it worked out well.
    Here is my query;
Instead of paying thousands for a Phantom camera... ---amazing really... you should check out Tom Guilmettes new site and see his "locked in a hotel room with a phantom' video.. awsome results-- I have seen that with a Final Cut Pro plugin called 'Optical Flow' I saw 7-d footage slowed down to 1% of original speed!!!! and it looked great!!!
Admittedly, that is far too slow for any useable purpose (for me) but it would open up all kinds of great possibilities.. without the humoungous expense of these pro cameras..
Is there a similar plugin like Optical flow for Premiere pro6? Or any other workflows (programs) to get my slow-mo's down as if I had shot at say 120FPS instead of only the maximum 60 FPS of my 7-D?
    Thanks all...

Timewarp in after effects is almost as good as twixtor (it's got few tweaks for difficult scenes but does pretty well).   Unfortunately you do have to drop in to After Effects to use it
I was rather hoping it was going to be in CS6 like Warp Stablizer is, because those were the two effects I used most.

  • Problem Changing Clip Speed

    Hello,
When working with FCP I have continuously had problems with changing clip speeds. I import my .dv files, open them in the viewer window, select my desired in and out points and drag and drop the selection in the timeline. Once it's here and I attempt to change it's speed, I get this message:
"UNABLE TO COMPLETE COMMAND. A CONFLICT OCCURRED DURING A TRIM OPERATION"
As many of you know it's impossible to achieve your desired outcome without the ability to edit a clips speed. I would really appreciate help and I thank anyone in advance for their time.
    -David

    Welcome to the forum!
Usually you'll get that message if there are clips further down the Timeline (to the right) from the clip your working with. This helps keep the other clips where you wanted them instead of getting pushed down by a slo-mo clip.
One work-around is to open a new Sequence with the same settings, then copy the clip to the new Sequence. When you've made the adjustment you wanted, copy and paste the lip back into the original Sequence.
As many of you know it's impossible to achieve your desired outcome without the ability to edit a clips speed
I'd have to disagree with your assumption ... the need for speed changes isn't universal. I seldom (if ever) need to adjust speed for news clips, press conferences, corporate promos, etc.

ps: just curious as to why you're using .dv files in FCP? Was this footage captured in iMovie?

  • Slow motion and speed changes blurry jittery - SOLUTION!

I Have had a few issues with slo mo and sped up stuff going blurry or jittery on me.
This is from HD from a HC3 down converted (camera does this) to SD anamorphic (pal).
I think i have found the solution - and welcome any exra content from more experienced heads than mine.
Of course there are limitations to how far you can slo mo before you get the jitters - anyway- here is my hot tip!
Change your speed (fit to fill , or modify speed) of the clip in the canvas (leaners - watch your sound timing - it can be thrown off if you have locked off ausio tracks) open up your clip from the canvas by double cliking it, tap the motion tab, cross the motion blur box - adjust the sample setting from 4 to 32 (i dont know exactly what this does but this is the key!, drop motion blur down to 0 %.
RENDER! voila! This has quickly resulted in some speed changed clips that hold their form rather nicely (no blurring or strobing , jitters etc - that have plagued me in the past - i'm doing lots of sport stuff where speed changes are common)
Hope this helps other relative newbs out there! And if anyone would care to comment on why this works i would be all ears!

I know what you mean, I end up with an extra frame if I set an in and out point then insert/overwrite replace or superimpose.
I find the quickest work flow is to
    0. mark the in point at start of clip
    1. copy the clip, command c
    2. go to the end of the sequence, end
    3. paste clip
    4. change speed, look at duration of clip, change speed %, command j
    5. change duration back to original duration,
    6. cut clip from end of time line,
    7. return to in point and paste clip.
I find this does give me control over the clip, does not affect the timeline and is frame accurate.
I agree you should be able to change the clip speed without affecting the duration.
    The alternative is as Andy described, fit to fill, here is an alternitive way of doing/describing this process;
adjust the out point of the clip to the new point you want,
move the clip out of the space on the timeline where you want the clip with the speed change to go,
place the CTI in the space where you want the new clip to go,
double click on the clip you want to adjust, opening it in the viewer,
drag the clip from the viewer to the canvas and the fit to fill option will appear along with all of the other options,
this will also do what you want, I believe there is no one click solution.
Someone please prove me wrong! I would love to be able to "command j" in to the speed dialog box, click on a check box that says keep duration or in/out points and simply change the duration.

  • Optical Flow Retiming Question

I have a quesdtion about retiming clips in FCPx.  I have a mov imported from my DSLR (H264).  I reverse and slow down the clip.  All is good so far.  But when I switch the retiming to Optical Flow, it only shows the first frame of the clip (the first frame of the imported clip, even if that section is not in the storyline).  Optical Flow does work if the clip isn't reversed.  Does Optical flow only work on clips going forward?  I can always render an intermediate clip, but hoped it could be done within a single project.

To the bug report? No, I don't think you ever get replies to bug reports sent to Apple. You just have to wait for the next release and hope.

  • Optical Flow-Motion or not?

Hi everone, Just a quick question, if i want to slow down a clip in FCP X do i need motion to use optical flow? I can see it in my menues but its always greyed out? If i need to install motion then thats fine, but just want to make sure im not doing something daft in FCP X.
    Thanks in advance!
    Greg.

You don't need motion to use optical flow. Select the clip you want to slow  down. Then from the menu bar choose modify>retime>slow and the amount. You can also use the retime button on the tool bar. Once you have selected a slowdown percentage the optical flow choice will be available under video quality.

  • Exporting variable speed slo mo to Motion for optical flow, how?

    Greetings,
I have FCP 7 and Motion 4. I am new to using Motion. I want to either export a variable speed clip from FCP to Motion and add the optical flow feature, or build a variable speed change in Motion, but I can't figure out how to do either!
The 20 second clip is in reverse-slow-mo, and progressively gets slower (from -38% to -4%) as set in FCP using keyframes. When I "send" the clip & it opens in Motion, the in-out points aren't recognized, (the whole unedited clip shows up) and when I set the timing to "variable" in the inspector, (under "timing", for time remap) the clip disappears in the timeline altogether.
I've also tried to create a QT of the clip as 100% but in reverse (just to have less to build in Motion) but I cannot figure out how on earth to use the graph in Motion (under time remap, variable speed) to create a variable speed change to progressively slow down. This is the key issue for me-- how to create variable speed change in Motion??
I tried one other thing in Motion, the "add behavior", and added "Speed Change", couldn't figure out this method either-- how to make clip progressively slow down, and also how to apply the optical flow to that speed change (seems optical flow only works with time remap method?) Any help would be greatly appreciate.
    AKJ

Although it does occur, the media isn't ALWAYS mangled... did you try workflow 1 above?
As far as I can tell from your description, baking the speed change in before sending to Motion is not going to work as the clip will already be retimed.
I agree, changing versions mid project is a bad idea. When faced with this recently, I bought a $50 500gb hard drive, installed Leopard and the new version of Final Cut Studio onto it, booted into that drive, opened up a COPY of my project in the FCP7 and did what I needed.
I found no issues, so just continued in FCP7. However, if I did find issues, I would have done only what I needed the new version for, then rebooted back into the drive with FCP6, opened my original project, then imported the results.

  • Optical flow rendering clip, computer logged out, missing files

I was creating a video, where some of the clips were on the iMac harddrive and some of them were on an external SeaGate harddrive.  I was waiting for an optical flow rendering of one of the clips and walked away from the computer.  Unfortunately, the computer screen saver came on and logged me out.  When I logged back in, and opened Final Cut, the only clips showing available in the library are those on the iMac.  The SeaGate files briefly appear in the event library only while final cut is loading, but once it completely loads it disappears (and can't be accessed), and all of the clips from there are showing as red "missing file."  Therefore, my video is not there.  Any suggestions on how to get back to where I was before the computer logged out? Or why the SeaGate is not available anymore?

this is what shows in the event library as fcp is loading.
once loaded it changes to this:
Here is the finder showing the seagate drive and one of the clips I used:
i ran disk utility, verify disk, both drives are working properly... all green.

  • Speeding up footage: Best in FCP or does Optical Flow work better?

Quick consensus guys: I have footage of a woman rolling a burrito, but unfortunately she did it verrrrrrrry slow! I know in FCP I can simply change the speed there, but I was wondering if Optical flow also works better for "Fast-motion"?
I know optical flow is more for simulating a smooter "over-cranking" effect or ramping, but what about for my application here?
As always, thanks for your time and advice.
    -Mike

And I forgot to imply, using optical flow would be in Motion.
