Optical out of the G5

On the G5 the optical digital output says that it will only go up to 48k. So, does that mean if I am mixing a project recorded above that (ie: 88.2k) I will not be listening to the real deal? (frequencies and etc.) In other words should I use my fireface 800's AD or DA to hear the extra resolution? Thanks!

read the kbps thread.
you will get bizarre results if you try to output 88.1k through 48k. everything will sound reeeaaaallllyyy ssslllooowwww.

• Optical out via the headphone socket?

Hi does anyone know whether the G4 power pc 12 inch laptops have an optical out via the headphone socket as per later machines?
only guessing re the os, may be even earlier.
cheers
Nigel.

Nope. In all the 12" Powerbooks, the audio port is analog-only.

• Optical out on the new N-Spec AE

The old AE only allowed 16bit 44Hz music to be transmitted out the optical out - I presume partly due to bandwidth restrictions. Now the gruntier N-spec version is here, does anyone know if this limit has been raised? (hopefully to 24bit 96Hz).

"anger" is a VERY strong term ... I doubt many folks make a computer purchase based soley upon a very basic emotional response ...
If you take a look at history you can discover the original iMac (circa 1998) that many in the industry claimed would never sell because Apple chose to not include a floppy drive and used that new fangled USB interface for connecting mice, keyboards and printers (USB? nobody was using USB!) ... fast forward seven generations later, the iMac is doing just fine ... and ... if you paid attention today ... it is the #1 desktop model in sales in the U.S. ... While other PC makers are experiencing dwindling unit sales, Apple has seen a steady increase in laptop and desktop sales over the past 6 years ... I don't think they would risk changing that on a whim ... the use and dependancy of optical drives is shrinking, not expanding ... folks are increasingly downloading or streaming music, videos and data rather than using physical mediums ...
Check back in six months and we'll discuss sales of the newly introduced iMac and see if you are still "angry" ... or if the decision has hurt Apple's efforts in computer design ...

• HDMI Out @ Optical Out at the same time?

I need to install an ATV 2 in my old home theater system. The reciver does not accept HDMI inputs but does accept optical inputs. Can I run HDMI to the TV and use the optical out port on the ATV 2 to direct the audio to the receiver for decoding and presentation?

Welcome to the Apple Community.
Yes indeed that's how many of us do it. It also helps eliminate potential HDMI issues by connecting the Apple TV and TV by HDMI directly.

• Does anyone know the sound card specs (USB/Optical out) for the Macbook Pro 15 Retina?

I have looked everywhere and have just given up. The "technical specs" aren't very technical at all. Anyway, I have mine hooked up to a Cinema display, so the Thunderbolt and one USB are used on the left hand side. That leaves just one USB for 3 printers, one scanner, my Griffin PowerMate and my DAC. So I was wondering if using the Optical (Toslink Mini) out in the headphone jack might be a plan if I can find a DAc that deosn't need the USB for power AND if the optical out is 24/192.
I am just starting to set the laptop up as a replacement for my Mac Pro Desktop so wondering what to do here.
Thanks!

I've just started to look into an issue I'm having with my DAC and my new iMac. There are some serious issues with using a DAC with USB3.0, so you may not even be able to use your DAC on your USB port. I'm getting a lot of popping noises when going through my USB 3.0 ports. I've had some success my hooking my DAC up to a UDSB hub (which is USB2). Problem there becomes power supply issue, whereas the problem with USB3 is data transfer.

• Can you use the HDMI Out and the Optical Cable out at the sametime?

I would like to connect the HDMI out cable from Apple TV to connect to the HDMI digital video/audio connection to my stereo and connect the optical out on the Apple TV and connect to my Zone 2 on the same reviever.
Can I use both these Apple TV outputs at the same time or can you only use one at a time?

Yes, lots of conflicting reports, sometimes things can change from one AppleTv firmware to another.
I had assumed PJJW12 was planning on viewing and also outputting audio to Zone 2.
I assume the AppleTv would be hooked to the Av amp - might be worth seing if the current HDMI audio could be routed to Zone 2 to avoid need for an adapter. However the AppleTV is connected if there is a TV involved and audio processing gets passed through it may also be possible to take analogue out from a TV and perhaps route that to Zone 2.

• Is there a "splitter" for the optical out - I need to send the digital to my receiver AND need an analog out for a speaker?

I'm trying to optical out from the TV to my receiver and then need an analog to go to a speaker. My audio visual guy says there isn't one.
Thank you for any assistance.

• Optical out sends constant noise to speakers

Hi,
Is it normal that when I connect the optical out to the surround sound system the speakers produce a constant hissing noise. If I connect any other device with optical out to the surround system instead of the AppleTV, the speakers don't produce this annoying feedback noise. Is this a problem with my specific AppleTV or is this a design malfunction in all AppleTV devices.
The noise always has a constant volume.
I have tried connecting it to a different surround sound system, and the AppleTV
still produces the same noise. It's likely that most people won't be bothered by
this, but I have sensitive ears and I did expect high quality output from this
rather expensive device (given the limitations apple has enforced upon it, even though the hardware is capable of so much more).
Thnx.
(To bad I couldn't get online support from Apple for the AppleTV, seems
they only have e-mail service for iTunes store????)

This is a public update of Lion available since last night.
No a developer thing.
Click in your "Apple" menu (top left) and then "Software Update"
The usual procedure.
I have left my machine on all night long and the sound is still good and the "SoundStay" app is still runnig fine.

• Connecting 5.1 desktop speakers directly to optical out on iMAC - how?

I have Logitech X-540 speakers
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakersaudio/home_pcspeakers/devices/234&cl=us,en
I can only find external sound cards that hook through USB. Is there a way to connect the 3 colored cables (orange, green, black) from the Logitech speakers to some conversion cable or cable converter to connect to optical out on the back of the iMAC? I have read the forums and can't find much aside from connecting your iMAC to a home theater setup. Thanks!

Nope. The iMac's optical out is an AC-3 encoded digital feed, but your
speakers require six decoded analog signals. You need a 5.1 decoder --
something like FireWave, or a DolbyDigital receiver, or a speaker system
with a built-in decoder.

Thank you Jason,
I have tried both sample rates offered 96/48 and neither work.

• Dreamplug, 16 bit DAC, relevant when using optical out?

I am looking at this baby to use as an MPD server. The plan is to connect it to my amp through the optical out. The plan, of course, is to put Arch on it in due time (I don't know the status of the ARM port).
I assume the fact the DAC is only 16 bit does not matter when you use optical, but I just want to be sure .

.:B:. wrote:It has an SD(HC) slot as well . If I get it it'd just be running MPD, and NFS, nothing more. Should be able to squeeze that onto 1 GB (although it will probably be Debian).
Yes in that case you are probably better off putting a Slug on it instead of Arch, you'll have an mpd server up and running in no time. However, for a music station / fileserver, wouldn't an ARM NAS be an interesting alternative? They're not much bigger or more expensive, but you'll have the storage as well then.

• 5.1 to home theater receiver thru Optical Out not working; Fatality Platinum

I tried connecting the Optical Out on the front to my receiver's optical in. Made sure everything was set to 5. in both the Creative and receiver settings, and the receiver gets optical 5. just fine with my Play Station version 3 and X-box version 360 gaming computers. Please help, I have tried reboot, messing with settings, Google, I cannot fix this.
Jinwoo from great korea!

Hi I have the same probleme, exept that I have succesfuly pluged my home theater receiver and the 5.1 works. Just my subwoofer seems not to work properly. Like when I plug it into a digital dvd player it works very nicely. but when pluged into the sound card it seems that it dosnt have any signal for it.
ANy clues??? I know i pluged everything finely I have tested the sound test for each speaker and sub to, from the receiver and from the creative software the sub seems to work but very quietly even if I cran the volume up on the sub or in the software , the sub dont work as it should.
1 thing I remarqued is that the sub works occasionaly in some movies. When listening to the music it not working and I dont understand that.

• Use of optical out on new macmini dual core

I bought a new ~Belkin optical cable. It fits perfectly in my macmini and my bose 321 system. This 321 system has an optical entry. But ....
the description by the mac how to get the mac to use the optical out is not told. It is told to select optical out in the configuration screen under sound. I don't have this option! Ithought the updat of the minimac would have solved the problem, but it didn't. Please help me! I want to use this optical cable, so that I can use the bose system in combination with the minimac!
Kind regards David Rietveld

With the exception, as noted of the DVD player, it's System Preferences>Sound>Output. Make sure you used the mini-toslink/optical adapter and that the cable is securely snapped into an INPUT port on your bose system. Everything will be (as noted) auto-detected, and you should see the option:
Digital Out Built - In Output
Select it. If you have multiple adapters for sound (ex a usb audio adapter), then you might want to select the digital output for use only w/ dvd player. Choose where you want your system sound and alerts sent in the other tabs of Sound.
On your bose unit you may have both analog and digital inputs for the same source. I'm not questioning your competence, more my knowledge the equipment you are utilizing. Make sure you select OPTICAL as the input for that source.
For example,
You have buttons for Video 1, Video 2, and DVD. On the back you have a coax digital, a couple of toslink/optical digital connectors and a bunch of RCAs. If you hook up ALL the wires from each device then press Video 1; it MAY just use the analog connections...and since you're ONLY sending digital you won't hear a thing.
If you have 'auto-detect' for analog or digital it probably prioritizes digital over analog and will merely work IF SELECTED. Some systems may do the reverse.
Good Luck,
-j

• Optical Out Drive Bay - Audigy

Hi,
Audigy ZS Platinum
Is it possible to connect a 5. Analog from the back of the audio card AND <a 5. receiver from the Optical Out from the Dri've Bay? Or will the Optical be disable?
Thanks in advance.
G.

hi,
of course it'ss possible to connect the analog out and the optical out simultaneously. the optical out won?t be switched off when you?re using the analog out first.
but please pay attention: if you want to get an encoded signal, e.g. a dolby digital signal from a dvd movie, by the optical out you have to set the option "digital bypass". in this case the dolby digital signal won?t be decoded by your audigy card and you won?t get an analog signal from the back!
;-), frank

• Optical Out "rumbles" on startup

When I boot my Mac Pro the speakers will have a low (but often quite loud) rumble. Many times the rumbling won't stop until I play some other sound. This is through the optical out (if I unplug the optical out from the speakers it stops).

How do you know it is not the device/speakers the optical cable is connected to?
