Optical out (toslink) woes

Hi,
I've been tryin three different Airport Express basestation all with the same result: The optical output that connects to external speakers or digital amps does not seem to work.
I tried connecting a B&W Zeppelin and my old iPod Hi-Fi. No chance. I also tried differrent cables. I can also see the red light beam in any occasion.
Using analog cable works just fine.
I don't think it's a defect, because I doubt I would see that on three different units. I think I can also rule out the cable, because I tried different ones. Maybe it can't handle the adapters that bring the standard toslink down to mini-toslink, but that's just an assumption.
Has anyone else experienced something like this? Any ideas?
Thanks
Sascha

I too had struggled with this exact issue, changing both AXs and cables. What I didn't try was a different miniplug-to-TOSlink adapter ... which ended up fixing the problem for me. You may want to give it a try.

  • CD player Toslink optical out to optical digital audio in port. Need  help

    Hello,
I'm taking the Toslink Optical out of my Sony 707esD CD player into the Audio in/optical digital audio in port of my March 2009 iMac.
In System preferences>Sound>Input>Digital in Optical digital-in port I see a signal occurring on the input level meter but I do not hear audio.
Output is headphones port and is working fine from other sources.
I see a signal input does anyone know how to hear the output.
    Thanks.

  • Does the MBA have an optical audio out (toslink)?

Does the MBA have an optical audio out (toslink)?

The MacBook Pro and iMacs have digital audio out routed through the headphone jack.  A physical converter (costing a few cents) must be used to connect a regular TOSLINK cable.
The MacBook Air apparently does not have this feature.
As to true Thunderbolt 'adaptors' I have yet to see any hit the market.  I would suggest not holding your breath while waiting for useful Thunderbolt technology to appear--one day perhaps, but not now. I would love to be proven wrong about this--I could really use the Thunderbolt<->FW800 adapter

  • Can't get the Toslink (Optical) out to work with Airport Express

I have the monster cable hooked up but get no optical out. I hooked up the mini plug to RCA and that works but the optical doesn't. Is there a setting I'm missing. I know the cable is working because I hooked it up to my mini computer and get the red light coming out the end. I don't get any light from the airport expess mini plug to Toslink.

Same problem here. Just bought an optical cable with the mini toslink connector (to work with the express and computers). I can get audio if I connect the cable to my computer, but no audio from the express. Regular analog audio comes out fine, but I cannot get the optical to work.
I can't find any preference or setting to change and have tried resetting the base station. Anyone have an idea?

  • Hooking up the digital optical out to my stereo reciever

I just got a new Core 2 Duo Mac Mini and I want to hook the digital optical out to my stereo. However, I noticed the connector does not seem to be a standard stereo optical cable. What do I need to do to connect this to my stereo reciever which supports digital optical in?

Actually some toslink cables that yoiu buy, come with them. I remember buying a 6' Philips that included the adapters.
Oddly enough, I think I found it at Wal*Mart (maybe target).

  • Added SPDIF Optical out to MSI A75-G35 and I get no sound

Hello, I connected a TOSLINK cable to my Onkyo receiver in lieu of 2 channel analogue.  I know I'm configured correctly on the receiver's end.  I set up my realtek HD audio manager to send music via WMP to the receiver using the PC's optical output.  The receiver is not recognizing any PCM signals from my PC.  I even popped Skyfall in the PC optical drive.  It plays the video just fine but the receiver doesn't even pick up the Dolby Digital signal from the movie.  I get no sound from the optical output, period.
When I configure audio manager for an analogue signal output through my headphones, all is good.  I change the settings to employ the optical output, and nothing happens.
I just want to play music on my home audio system via my PC mobo's add-in optical output.  1st, I had the latest HD audio drivers from the MSI website, which didn't work.  Right now, I'm using audio driver version 6.0.1.7083, dated 11/5/2013
Also, I tested the optical cable on my cable receiver box to the onkyo receiver.  No problemo.
Any other info about my system hardware or software that you need, just let me know.

LOL  No, I modified a toslink header bracket provided for an old DFI mobo.  It's a simple 3 wire config(ground, optical out, +5V).  Trust me when I say I got it right when I rewired the  pinout.  I have a red light passing through the end of the cable.  The SPDIF header is a $15 option from MSI and shipping cost is $16 and change.

  • SB Xtreme Audio Notebook optical out problem with Home TheaterSystem-HELP!

JSB Xtreme Audio Notebook optical out problem with Home TheaterSystem-HELP!, I have this sound card connected?(optical OUT) ?to my home?theater system's digital IN ?through the recommended /8in. optical miniplug-to-optical SPDIF cable. Theater system is set correctly to Digital-In mode. I have no sound!
The cable is a Velocity Toslink-to-Optical Mini Plug digital cable. I don't see any settings in the Creative Console Launcher. The notebook is a Dell XPS M730 (Vista 32).
I have a PS3, DirecTV, and the SB Xtreme Audio Notebook cable on a hub switch that connects to the system's?one Optical IN. The PS3 and DirecTV sound perfect!
The sound card works fine with standard PC speakers. I'm at a loss as?to what to try next. I set this whole system up myself, so I'm pretty good at working out the kinks, except this one!
    Karen

OK. I just went to Control Panel - Sound - Playback - Digital Output Device (SB Xtreme Audio Notebook) - Properties - Advanced. I experimented with different sample rates and bit depths. Clicked the test button and lo and behold - sound from the HTS! I've tried iTunes, PowerDVD (configured to digital output) and YouTube - no sound! Am I missing something really obvious?
HA! Just backed out to Playback and selected Digital Output Device (SPDIF) and set as Default. Sound is emunating from HTS! Well, that mystery is solved! Who knew.
Thanks anyway! Any comments or advice will still be appreciated.

  • Optical Out (NO LIGHT)

I am trying to get an optical signal out of the optical out port. I have plugged in an optical cable but dont seem to have any light output at the toslink end. Does this output socket need to be enabled any where?
    Thanks for your help!!
    Regards Alf

The audio in and output ports are analog and digital. For analog use a standard 3.5 mm mini plug. The digital requires a fiber optic cable with a mini plug. This mini plug is .5 mm longer than the analog version so that it can touch the LED and activate it for digital sound transmission.
There is an Output pane in System Preferences>Sound. That is usually automatic if you do not have other audio devices attached through FireWire or USB.
There are also audio selections in Audio MIDI Setup in Apps/Utilities.

  • Optical out port on G5

I had a quick question, it may be stupid... However, I was wondering if it is normal for the red light in the optical out port to be constantly on, even when no toslink cable is in use.

  • Optical out weird problem

Hi, i've a really weird problem on my mbp audio out. Apparently the optical out seems to go in "sleep" mode in less than a second of inactivity, turning off the speakers which takes like a second to turn on.
The result is that any short, silent-preceeded sound is completely not played.
The behaviour is also described in this thread.
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=699686

I am also noticing this problem. I have my iMac connected to an Apogee Mini-DAC via optical TOSLINK. I thought I had a bad cable, so I bought a new one, but it's still losing its connection. Now I can definitely say it's the Mac and not the DAC because I will unplug the cable from the Mini-DAC but leave it connected to the Mac. If I play something in iTunes, the red light shines through the cable, but if I stop the song, after a few seconds the light goes out. So, this is not limited to MBP. I have a suspicion that this is a "feature" in order to cut down on energy use, but it sure is annoying.

  • Use of optical out on new macmini dual core

I bought a new ~Belkin optical cable. It fits perfectly in my macmini and my bose 321 system. This 321 system has an optical entry. But ....
the description by the mac how to get the mac to use the optical out is not told. It is told to select optical out in the configuration screen under sound. I don't have this option! Ithought the updat of the minimac would have solved the problem, but it didn't. Please help me! I want to use this optical cable, so that I can use the bose system in combination with the minimac!
    Kind regards David Rietveld

With the exception, as noted of the DVD player, it's System Preferences>Sound>Output. Make sure you used the mini-toslink/optical adapter and that the cable is securely snapped into an INPUT port on your bose system. Everything will be (as noted) auto-detected, and you should see the option:
Digital Out Built - In Output
Select it. If you have multiple adapters for sound (ex a usb audio adapter), then you might want to select the digital output for use only w/ dvd player. Choose where you want your system sound and alerts sent in the other tabs of Sound.
On your bose unit you may have both analog and digital inputs for the same source. I'm not questioning your competence, more my knowledge the equipment you are utilizing. Make sure you select OPTICAL as the input for that source.
    For example,
You have buttons for Video 1, Video 2, and DVD. On the back you have a coax digital, a couple of toslink/optical digital connectors and a bunch of RCAs. If you hook up ALL the wires from each device then press Video 1; it MAY just use the analog connections...and since you're ONLY sending digital you won't hear a thing.
If you have 'auto-detect' for analog or digital it probably prioritizes digital over analog and will merely work IF SELECTED. Some systems may do the reverse.
    Good Luck,
    -j

  • Enabling Optical-Out on 15-Inch MBP

I am trying to enable Optical-Out on my MBP.
I have installed and connected the TOSLINK cable i bought off monoprice. It says specifically in the description its compatible, i have also read several articles on tis all of which linked to the cable.
I have connected the cable to my MPB, and to my sound system. According to the articles i've read its supposed to enable automatically. It hasn't.
    Maybe i am missing something?

    Hi Think,
You're right in thinking that it is supposed to enable automatically. There is a sensor inside the port that should detect whether you've got an analog cable or an optical cable plugged in there.
    A couple things:
Plug in both ends of the Toslink cable and go to System Preferences --> Sound. Then click the Output tab. See if you can select Toslink or Optical from that list.
If that doesn't work, try plugging the Toslink into the audio input port, and connecting the opposite end to an output source somewhere else (ex: on your TV or audio receiver). Then see if you get any input through the "Line In" audio input in System Preferences. If you do, you know that your audio out port is faulty, and not the cable.
If you don't get anything in either port, I'd probably suspect the cable.
