Optical SPDIF output stopped working- why?
I recently installed a larger HD and more RAM in my 1.63MHz Mini. After getting buttoned back up I noticed the optical SPDIF output stopped working (as in NO laser visible). Is there any possibility that this could be related to the OS (10.5.8)? Seems unlikely since it was fine before installation.
I really need this as it is my only option for interfacing with my playback system.

Long shot, but...
Open Audio Midi Setup in Applications>Utilities, see the input & output options & KHz setting there, some things will change it for their own use, then not set it back.
Have you done a PRAM reset, CMD+Option+p+r...

Headphone output stopped working (snd-hda, Dell XPS 13)
Update: I got it working! See my second post; I will leave this here as a reference for those with the same problem.
My headphone output stopped working, and my integrated microphone also stopped working. The speakers work fine, though.
AFAIK, I didn't do anything, and am quite baffled as to why this is. It's worked fine for half a year.
I have a Dell XPS 13; it came installed with Ubuntu, I booted that, where it *does* work (just to eliminate hardware problems).
I'm running 3.16.4-1; I also downgraded to 3.16.3, which didn't help.
I'm testing with speaker-test and mplayer -ao alsa; I normally use PulseAudio, but eliminating that for testing seemed like a sane thing to do. It doesn't work either way.
I also downloaded the hda_analyzer, that has a lot of options, but I'm not sure what most of them mean...
The closest I've been able to get at the problem is this:

This is required to get this to work in the first place, and always has worked; I tried some other options, to no avail. the enable=0,1 is to disable the HDMI output (disabling this has no effect either).

I have no idea how I ended up in this "broken" situation, or even what this option does, or how to use it without gnome-alsa-mixer (I had to install 15 packages to get this, as I normally don't use gnome)... Sound on Linux still seems no better than when I started using it 15 years ago :-( (I spent about 5 hours on this...) -
Concerning: VGA monitors using an Aluminum Powerbook G4 PowerPC 2004 15"-screen 1.5Ghz
The DVI (converted to VGA) video output stopped working on this computer after 9 years of service. This raises question 1:
Is there any way of fixing this? I've tried the usual: triple checked all vga cables & devices through trial & error. Bought a new DVI-VGA adapter. Reset PRAM, PMU, etc. Nothing works. Something is probably damaged, because my KVM switch was not working unless I hot-reseated the vga cable into it, leading to this DVI port, and that is pretty rough stuff.
Question 2 (related):
This dovetails into this: Can I drive a VGA monitor with the s-video output port on this computer. It would take an s-video (male)-to-15-pin-VGA adapter. Has anyone does this? So far, I haven't even found the adapter mentioned anywhere.

el7Thanks for the useful feedback, Knucklesmac. I agree. I must have blown something on the logic board -- because I had a faulty old KVM switch that would not switch between computers without some nasty hot-plugging/unplugging the VGA video cables. (wince!). It's like when Dizzy Dean ruined his arm because a line drive hit him in the foot and he readjusted his mechanics around the injury. I take the blame because this has been a great computer, and does not deserve any blame.

Hi folks, I own am IMac 27" running OS X 10.8.2. The optical drive has stopped working in that it accepts the disc but spits the CD, DVD even my original iMac install DVD back out, after attempting to read the disc. Any of you kind folks any ideas?

K7n2g ILSR and SPDIF output not working
just got a new k7n2g ILSR mobo and cant get the coaxial spdif output to work.
Have attached the s bracket connector and a coaxial cable from that to my videologic digitheatre. My speakers don't seem to be receiving any signal however. Checked the audio settings on the nforce control panel and all seems sweet. any suggestions?
Thanks for any repliesI have the very same problem. I thought that the S-Bracket was defected so I borrowed one from a friend of mine. We have the very same board and we bought it the very same day. And it did not work either. :(
Then I made a little test. The user's manual displays the pin layout of the S-Bracket connector on the mobo so I connected two little wires to the appropriate connectors and connected the wires to a standard RCA connector. Then I connected this to my receiver's coax port and it worked!
So it seems to me that the S-Bbracket was (and IS) defected. Then I thought that my friend and I had the same faulty series of S-Bracket but now I don't know what to think... -
DBMS Output stops working intermitantly

When I am creating a PL/SQL script in SQL Developer I like to check the results in DBMS Output. The problem I am experiencing is it returns the results to the DBMS Output pane some of the time and then for some of the time it does,nt. I cannot work out why it stops working. Some of the time creating a new work sheet is successful.
Has anyone else experienced this problem. It is a little frustrating when it stops working, especially when you are in the middle of writing and testing scripts.
I have had this experience with every version of SQL Developer I have used.

Hitting the DBMS Output enable button in SQL Developer effectively performs the same as the "set serveroutput on size <buffer size>" or "dbms_output.enable(<buffer size>);" commands. As I understand it, if you are only ever going to run your code through the SQL Worksheet, then using the DBMS Output enable button means you don't need the dbms_output.enable call.
The Poll slider is how frequently that DBMS Output tab checks to see if there is any DBMS Output to display - the tooltip shows "Poll frequency max 15s". I have no idea what the minimum frequency is.
I don't know why it still isn't working - after closing all but one worksheet, have you confirmed that the DBMS Output tab shows "set serveroutput on"? If not, I would suggest you disable DBMS Output (should show "set serveroutput off") and then re-enable it (should show "set serveroutput on").
As a bit of background that might help clarify what is going on, without the set serveroutput on or dbms_output.enable or enabling DBMS Output through SQL Developer, calls to dbms_output.put_line (for example) are effectively ignored and the text is not saved. After a set serveroutput on or dbms_output.enable (without enabling DBMS Output through SQL Developer) calls to dbms_output.put_line are recorded but not displayed (they are only cached). After enabling DBMS Output through SQL Developer, the worksheet then polls the DBMS Output cache with the frequency defined by the slider and displays the results if any. The difference between SQL Developer and SQL Plus is that in SQL Plus the set serveroutput on also switches on the polling (done after every statement completes rather than on a frequency basis).

Photoshop CS5 Clone Stamp Tool option-click just stopped working, why?
I've been using clone stamp tool option-click (healing brush option-click also) on Photoshop CS5 on my Mac 10.6.5 and it stopped working suddenly on Monday. Had just used it on Sunday. So, I've tried to isolate the problem.
1. Went to Apple store and my keyboard and mouse work fine on their inhouse systems running Photosochop CS5. Problem still exists on home system.
2. Adobe photoshop suggested I go back to Mac 10.6.3. I did and problem still exits.
3. Reset all presets in CS5. Problem still exists.
4. Spent several hours with Adobe Photoshop tech on phone -- he couldn't make it work remotely either using his keyboard. Reloaded Photoshop from scratch. Problem still exists.
Question:
Could this be a hardware problem? Graphic board problem?
Or is this a software problem aside from Mac OS and CS5?Hi Joan

I had my iphone set up to be tracked as registered with iCloud and it had been using it for a year today it said no devices registered and stopped working even though i tracked the selected iphone 4 device an hour earlier why did it do this???
So basically the phone I was tracking was working an hour earlier it had no signal at times when it did pick up a signal it located it easily but an hour later the message came up no devices registered when my friend returned home I Checked the device I was tracking to make sure find my iphone was on but it was off and my friend didnt turn it off so my question is why did it turn itself off???

My USB 3.0 ports stop working, why?

I have a Line 6 UX2 audio interface since 5-6 years back, not sure.
It has been working perfectly with several Macbooks, an iMac and a Windows PC.
I bought the new Macbook Pro Retina (2.6 GHz, 16 GB RAM) and it worked for a while.
The symptom is that the USB ports suddenly stop working, the audio interface goes down with the rest of the devices (I have a USB 3.0 drive, a USB 2.0 drive and USB dongles for Cubase and Reason). This only happens (to my knowledge at least) when the audio interface is connected. And more often when audio starts playing (an application starts using the device) than random.
Now, this could be a hardware fault you say, but no. I've had other problems with this computer and have had the motherboard (which for Retina Macbook includes RAM, CPU, etc) replaces TWICE. And the same problem with all of the motherboards.
Now, I have checked Console when this error happens, and a kernel driver is outputting a message:

After this the USB ports are dead until I reboot. All applications using mounted USB drives get the beach ball, including Finder.
Either there is a problem with the Line 6 driver, or with Apples USB controller drivers. But while searching on the net I've found that other people have similar symptoms with other audio interfaces from other makers.

Optical mouse repeatedly stops working
I have a Logitech optical corded mouse that I have used successfully with my iMac for a long time. In the last month or so, it will periodically stop working -- no cursor appearing on the screen. To get it working again, I have to unplug from the iMac and replug into the same or any other USB port. It is happening more and more frequently. All other USB devices work correctly in every USB port on the iMac without any such problem. I did not install any new software before the problem began, other than regular installations of Apple updates from Software Update. My diagnosis: For reasons unknown, I need to buy a new mouse. Any other suggestions? Thanks much.

Optical Corded Mouse stopped working
I have a Pavilion P6215UK PC. Optical Corded mouse was working perfectly until yesterday, now it is ceased to work. i have replaced it with 3 other known good ones,problem still exists. i have tried the following;
1: System restore, i took the PC back 7 days to a known good state
2: I have deleted the mouse from the device manger and Re-booted ( there is a yellow exclamation symbol on this )
I have noticed when the PC is in its final booting up sage, the corded mouse is working. it suddenly stops and a message appears the driver cant be found. I reloaded the driver from a known good HP mouse and the problem still exists.
I'm currently using a cordless optical mouse with no difficulties
I would really appreciate any helpTry to go into safe mode by tapping the F8 and check if the mouse is working fine in safemode
if its working then create new user account and check if its still not working then you have to reinstall the Windows.
As the same mouse is working fine on the notebook then there is no issue with the mouse.

I have bought new Qosmio G30-102 and I am quite sure that SPDIF Optical Out connector is not working.
I can't test it at the moment, but I had a couple of SPDIF sound cards and every one of them had a red light on all the time, which signalized that Optical SPDIF is supported.Hi,
