Optimal iMac GPU Specifications

It seems clear from the chatter on several Apple-related forums that the Aperture software takes advantage of the GPU, not the CPU.
If that is true, when I buy a new iMac, should I pay the extra $200 to get the 780m GPU with 4mb of video RAM?
Or will the 775m GPU with 2Mb of video RAM do an adequte job?
The most intensive application of the computer will be Apple Aperture.

I'm pretty sure the OS and the app are well-enough engineered to use whatever is available.

This is a misleading syllogism.  The default GPU is adequate.  You might still pay $200 more for to upgrade it.
In my experience, it's always worth bumping up the initial configuration as a hedge against early obsolescence.  $200 spent now might give you 8 months more use from the machine in three years.  By all means put at least 16 GB of RAM in it.
I do think Retina-resolution displays are an unstoppable force, and that anyone working in photography is going to need one sooner rather than later.

  • Kernel Panic Lion 10.0.1 iMac GPU DumpGPURestart

    I posted the message below to the iMac forum - but it is clearly not a hardware problem, and also, clearly, a Lion 10.7.1 problem.
    I know this because I've now booted the same machine from my special Snow Leopard disk (I have it so I can run applications that don't work on Lion - it looks like lion itself is a bit in this category!).
    My iMac has crashed 5 times this morning, with kernel panics. This is obviously really bad news - not just on a Friday when I have a mountain of work that's now in danger of taking up all my weekend!
    I've checked the version of EPI, and it's correct.
    I'm not trying to run anything on my system that might exercise the GPU to see if I can duplicate the problem with Snow Leopard at all.

    There is no tablet connected to the system..
    The hang, and the break-up of the screen seem connected to the DumpGPURestart running. There are no GPU errors in the snow leopard logs.
    Any suggestions on how to fix lion?
    I'm not sure what to do next with diagnostics.
    I've had my iMac (lion 10.7.1) crash four times this morning. I've been looking at the dumps and it looks as if I could have a problem with the GPU. Thereare mesages like:
    DumpGPURestart - deny ipc-posix-shm apple.shm.notification.center
    This makes some sense as the screen breaks up (pixilates) with windows bleeding into each other before the crashes.
    Fortunately i can access the logs remotely. In /private/var/log there's a directory asl that's full of dump record directories AUX.2011.09.09 is the most recent one, but it looks as if this has been going on for the past three days - the first dump directory is 2011.09.07. Here are the dump directories.

  • Upgrading 20" iMac GPU?

    I was just wondering if it was possible to upgrade the 20" aluminum iMac's Graphics card? I currently have an ATI Radeon 2600 Pro and am not very pleased with it.
    I have had a look at ATIccelerator but have no idea how to use it so if anyone could post me in the right direction to understand the frequencies when overclocking a graphics card I would be very grateful!
    Has anyone else used ATIcellerator? What have you managed to overclock it to?
    P.s. If it is possible to upgrade the graphics card, is there a shop (in the UK) that could do it for me as I am not happy taking apart my mac.
    Thanks in advance!

    Actually the answer is YES, the GPU can be upgraded - it is a standard MXM graphics card. Please have a look at this blog (scroll to the bottom) and you'll see the card extracted:
    http://www.amfiteatar.org/content/view/155/57/lang,en/
    However a whole different issue is where you can purchase an iMac compatible GPU card.

    Apple has not published anything additional for users to figure out the heat limits of these devices. If you suspect the machine is overheating because self-shutting down/restarting, or a hardware test that fails, take it in for service.

  • New Core 2 Duo iMac Memory specification confusion

    I'm confused about the memory specification for the new iMac (late 2006). In the article 303084, it says that the new iMac models, other than 17 " model, accept DDR2 PC2 5300 667Mhz SO DIMM. But in the other article ( 304284 ), it says that the memory is DDR2 PC2 5400 667Mhz SO DIMM. So which one does it take? I'm just about to pick up the new iMac tomorrow and I already have 2 sticks of 1GB of DDR 5300 lying around. Can I use these 2 sticks in the new iMac? The brand of the memory is Samsung. Are they compatible with the new iMac? For all you guys out there who upgraded the memory in the new iMac, which brand do you use? I live in Australia, so brands like Crucial and OWC are hard to find. The popular local brands here Samsung, Corsiar, Twin Mos and Kingmax. I bought the Samsung from a friend who pulled them out from a Dell Laptop which he hated and sold it after a week of ownership. Now he's a proud owner a new Macbook Pro with 2GB of RAM installed from the factory. I would like to a make good use of these 2 Samsung RAMs. Thank you.
    iMac Core 2 Duo 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   PBG4 1.67Ghz, 30gb iPod, PMG4 MDD DP 1.42Ghz
    iMac Core 2 Duo 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   PBG4 1.67Ghz, 30gb iPod, PMG4 MDD DP 1.42Ghz

    P'Boy,
    No worries. The PC2-5400 that appears in the article you cite is a misprint. The iMac Core 2 Duo takes PC2-5300 memory. I have the new Core 2 Duo and verified this by looking at the memory modules. While PC2-5400 may well work in the iMac Core 2 Duo, PC2-5300 is the type of memory specified by Apple to work with this computer.
    Samsung is a fine brand, and is one of the brands used by Apple, so it should function just fine. Cosair is another fine brand, though I have not had occasion to use Cosair memory in a Mac (I've used it in a number of PCs).
    Bottom line. Your Samsung PC2-5300 modules should work just fine. Enjoy your new Core 2 Duo!

  • Transferring my old imac to my new imac.. specifically bootcamp

    Do I need to install bootcamp again? or will it all migrate over to my new imac?
    I'm trying to figure out if I have to start saving my data from my windows partition and find my Windows CD with serial number? any ideas?

    My mistake... I misread your question. There is an extra step you need to do. WinClone (freeware) will be required before you complete your Mac OS X transfers. WinClone runs on OS X and will be able to move your partition flawlessly. It's not as bad as reinstalling everything, though. Good luck.

  • IMac gpu Heatsink reading -192, DVD fan on full blast

    Recently had a problem where my DVD fan would turn on full blast. Did SMC update through apple, smc reset, pram reset. everything. Download iStat after none of that worked, and it said my gpu heatsink was at -192 degrees F. Obviously thats not right. What could this be?

    Sounds like a faulty sensor or loose sensor cable.
    Run the Apple Hardware Test, as per > Using Apple Hardware Test

  • Brand new 5k imac GPU heating to ridiculously hot levels under mild use

    I'm only browsing the Internet and using Google Hangouts. Presently my GPU die is at 100C and has remained consistent at this temperature throughout the day. The maximum allowed temperature for the GPU die as reported by iStat is 105C.
    my rMBP 2014 under a similar load is 117C, however it has an upper limit of (according to iStat) 200C.
    I am concerned that the GPU die would come within 5C of overheating under a mild workload. If I were to play a game such as League of Legends I am almost certain that this would cause the GPU die to reach 105C and thus cause the device to power itself off.

    GPU proximity is just that. The sensor is near the GPU, not directly in it. Same with any of the other "proximity" sensors. From my Late '09, missing even a GPU proximity sensor. Relatively recent version of iStat Menus, which includes all these "proximity" ones. Don't know what to make of the very high readouts for the GPU Die in your models. Temperature Monitor (free) no longer being supported, but maybe Marcel Bresink, in Hardware Monitor (paid--if it's still being supported for new models) has a note about those. Since those temps are showing high for everyone here, I'd be inclined not to worry about them and use the GPU Proximity as a more reliable guide as to what's going on.
    And then from Hardware Monitor, which shows all the same sensors, but with different names. For example, Power Board Proximity is called Power Supply Position 2.
    In mine the Northbridge makes a decent proxy for the GPU.

  • IMac G5 specifications?

    I have an iMac G5 iSight, and I would like to know what's in my computer. The videocard, processor, etc. On the Apple site they only say things about the new Intel iMac G5... Or is it the same?
    Thx.

    Apple is still selling the G5 iSight iMacs, and they have all the info about your model here.
    They aren't quite ready to abandon PPC, although Intel is obviously the future.

  • Hooking iMac 20" To 42" LCD (Specific LCD Brand)

    Good Morning,
    I would love you guys to help me today!
    I just bought a new iMac 20" as well as a Dynex 40" 1080dpi LCD HDTV.
    I would love to hook up my iMac dispay to the LCD screen.
    I've scanned through the forum to get a better idea of how to connect an LCD which does not have a DVI port, but found no answers.
    I would need to know which adapters to buy, as well as which cables, and how to connect the two, to have both Image and Sound.
    I've attached my TV specifications to get a more accurate answer, as i assume you guys know what are the iMac 20" specifications.
    * 2 built-in, bottom-mount 12W stereo speakers; volume leveler prevents volume fluctuations and is ideal for night viewing.
    * Inputs: 2 HDMI, 1 S-video, 2 component video, 1 composite video, 1 PC and RF antenna
    * Outputs: 1 A/V, optical digital audio and headphone
    * HDMI Inputs: 2
    * DVI Inputs: No
    * S-Video Inputs: 1
    * Component Video Inputs: 2
    * Composite Inputs: 1
    * PC Inputs: 1
    * RF Antenna Input: 1
    * Headphone Jacks: Yes
    * A/V Outputs: 1
    * Audio Outputs: 2
    * Watts/Channel: 12
    I would appriciate a detailed answer as soon as you can
    Thanks.
    J

    2 HDMI, 1 S-video
    you can use these ports with adaptors for the mini-DVI output on your imac.
    get a mini dvi->dvi adapter
    and a dvi->hdmi
    this should work and i dont see why it wouldnt.
    You wont be able to get sound on your tv from the imac without a audio controller or unless it has 3.5mm (normal) sound input, which it usually does if it has a VGA plug socket
    PC Inputs: 1
    I dont know if this means it has the VGA plug on it, but you can also get an adapter for this too.
    Youre best bet is to get a Audio/Video Controller or something along those lines or a sound system with optical capabilities.
    You could connect teh 3.5mm optical jack on the imac to the controller and ditto with the TV
    depending on where you get it, these adapters can run you about 5$-35$
    av control centers or compete sound systems will definetly run you over 200$ but you wont get sound without it.

  • Windows 7 won't boot on iMac 27". Stuck on OS option screen.

    Hi, I recently installed a full copy of Windows 7 Home Premium, purchased at Office Depot, on my fully upgraded iMac 27" (Core i5, 4GB, Radeon 4850). My intent was to use Snow Leopard as my platform of choice for work and special projects, while booting into Windows for gaming (PC gamer).
    I had an Applecare representative on the phone as I installed the operating system and the process appeared to resolve quite successfully.
    I used the Apple Bootcamp Utility to establish a partition size of 300 GB, and then I placed the Windows 7 32 bit full installation DVD into the drive and proceeded with the installation. I ensured that the Bootcamp partition formatted thoroughly (NTFS) and I set Windows to download all the necessary updates automatically via Windows Update.
    I ensured that the upgraded GPU drivers were included during the installation (to avoid the black screen issue), as well as installing the Snow Leopard disk drivers, the iMac 27"-specific drivers and new Bootcamp 3.1 update for Windows. The partition worked fine and appeared to have been configured successfully after approximately 2 days of booting.
    Soon after, I installed Quake Wars, L4D 1, 2, Mass Effect 2, Need For Speed: Undercover, Mozilla Firefox and Sophos Enterprise AV. Approximately a week after installation, I began to experience malfunctions varying greatly. Sometimes, when I would boot, I would simply reach a black screen with a white, flashing cursor. Other occasions I would load to a black screen, which contained a disk read error (Disk can not be found) and a request to CTRLALTDEL. Yet other times, the computer would simply lock up on the gray, Option bootdisk selection screen. In each of the aforementioned circumstances, the computer would seem permanently stuck, since the computer would not proceed to any operating system, regardless of time allotted (up to 20 minutes provided). On occasion, Windows would boot normally with no problems whatsoever.
    During each of the inexplicable lock ups, I would initiate a hard reboot, and boot off of the Windows 7 HP 32 bit DVD. Often, the DVD would perform a boot check of the operating system. On each of the occasions, the operating system check would list no errors. Because I was using the Apple Wireless Keyboard, I assumed that perhaps the issue remained with an inability to strike CTRLALTDEL and quickly purchased a USB keyboard. While I no longer receive the "Can not find disk" errors that request CTRLALTDEL, I still rarely get the black screen with the flashing cursor and I routinely receive the gray, OS option screen.
    I believed that perhaps booting with an external drive or jump drive attached might be causing the problem but upon removing all of said drives, the boot malfunctions persist. I used the Snow Leopard Disk Utilities to scan the hard drive and it detected no problems. I also utilized Windows hard drive utility to check for bad sectors. After 2 hours of scanning, no bad sectors or hard drive problems were detected. I finally rebooted the system in ChkDsk and upon 1 hour of scanning, ChkDsk confirmed no problems, bad sectors or issues with the hard drive. Because all three utilities appear to be unanimous, operating from two distinct operating systems, I'm inclined to believe the consensus and dismiss the possibility of a defective hard drive.
    While I can always eventually reboot into Windows, I am concerned that the large number of "hard reboots" - reboots done using the power button, which account for 5-6 on bad days, will eventually lead to a diminished lifespan for my iMac's motherboard or power supply. I want to curtail these pointless restarts. Booting with the Windows 7 DVD in the hard drive, yields a clean boot into Windows, however, this is very inconvenient and, moreso, would lead to wear and tear on the DVD that I would rather avoid (as well as not resolving the problems inherent in my Windows boot partition). After running the Windows 7 boot utility, over a dozen times, and receiving no errors at all, I'm at a loss for what the problem can be.
    My biggest problem, currently, is to avoid the wave of hard reboots. This most naturally occurs due to the computer locking up on the gray OS option screen. I'll select Windows and the hard drive will not spin up. I was advised to check my boot ini or use utitilities that provided a hard-mapped boot table for the Windows partition but I'm wary of corrupting or damaging my Windows installation.
    Has anyone experienced these problems with their Macs, 27" or otherwise? And can anyone help me resolve this problem before substantial wear and tear through constant rebooting results? Thank you for any input and thank you for your time.

    HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
    *Soon after, I installed Quake Wars, L4D 1, 2, Mass Effect 2, Need For Speed: Undercover, Mozilla Firefox and *Sophos Enterprise AV*. Approximately a week after installation, I began to experience malfunctions varying greatly*
    Macs get grumpy when running anti virus software. Disable or completely uninstall Sophos A/V and see if that makes a difference. A/V software on a Mac will slow the drive down more and more as time goes on.
    Also, check the vendor sites for each 3rd party software you installed to make sure they are compatible with 10.6.x
    The "hard reboots" are a result of the system freezing due to incompatible or outdated software.

    Well, you're not alone. Many other users are having the same problem,and it appears that Apple is ignoring the problem. I bought my iMac 27" in June 2010 and installed Bootcamp 3.1 running Windows 7. About every other reboot the gray screen will freeze during bootup and I have to do a hard reboot. Sometimes I get the Disk Read Failure. It is very, very frustrating. The only reason I bought the iMac 27" is that I like the look of it and the big screen; I have no desire to switch to a Mac, as I have too much money invested in Windows development software. I've installed multiple dual-boot systems in other non-Mac systems and never had any problems. I hope Apple stops ignoring the problem and comes out with a fix real soon.

  • How important is GPU acceleration in FCPX/Motion 5?

    So I've been using FCPX and Motion5 on an old mac (mid-2010 iMac, i3 dual core) at work (self taught - 3-6 minute promos and tutorial vids for our web services, not remaking Blue Planet or anything!), and as an Apple Convert I want to replace my home computer with a Mac, and also do some of these spots for a sports team I'm involved with - short competition reports/promo spots/review films for the Christmas party, that sort of thing. DSLR video, so nothing too taxing by industry standards - not 2K/4K, multicam, or any of that good stuff!
    It seems that I can't get a new Mac Mini with discrete graphics at all, and the cheapest MBP with discrete graphics is the 15" non-retina, which is further than my budget really wants to be pushed (I could use the portability of a mini or macbook, hence the exclusion of iMacs).
    Given that I'm doing relatively light work (nothing more than 6-10 minutes), would a new mac with a beefy cpu and Intel HD4000 onboard graphics (quad core mac mini for instance) manage, or should I really be hunting round for a refurb unit that perhaps has a slower cpu and is a bit older but benefits from discrete graphics?
    Basically I'm asking how far I should trade off cpu vs gpu. FCPX tech specs state Intel HD 3000 as a minimum spec, and all the new units have HD 4000, so technically it'll run with onboard graphics, but I'm wondering how far it'll get before keeling over - probably not very!

    If you want a smooth and more importantly non-lagging NLE Experience. FCPx is NOT the way to go. You could put in the fastest GPU on the planet and FCPx would still be laggy, unfortunately. At least in comparison to Premiere Pro which is very very very smooth.
    I myself, NEED the "Media Openness" of FCpx. Meaning that it enables me to cut faster than any other app on the planet. However, once I try to use the features it HAS, like compositing, titling, compound clips etc etc etc, the app totally bugs down. And that regardless of GPU. All such things are done on the fly in PPRO. With NO Hickups and that is due to its architecture which is highly optimized for GPU. Alas, PPRO's media management/integration is nothing compared to that in FCPx. Which is why I use FCPx ;-)
    PPRO is optimized for GPUs FCPx is NOT !
    So to your question !
    The only thing a faster  GPU will get you is the ability to have eye candy-stuff like "Opening of Inspector" look smooth and perhaps your event library scroll a little faster. I have 7 Macs here at this facility all ranging from Pro Graphics cards to consumer ones... There is very very little difference in actual performance.
    In my own personal experience, when dealing with FCPx the GPU matters very very little. What WILL make FCPx speed up significantly is running OS X (And thus FCPx) off of an SSD drive.
    Above are MY findings and NOT something I have read about nor are they based on any forum-specs.
    And remember - Speed is a very relative term. The more you work and the better you get at what you do, the slower the routines appear to be. So to someone writing more than he is cutting, FPCX might be a very performance-fast app but to someone spending his whole day and night with FCPx the application is extremely laggy and slow when used to its full extents.

  • How is ram shipped in new imacs

    this might be in a thread but i couldn't find it. i'm gonna be in the market for a new imac. the specs say it ships with 2gb ram. i know there are only two slots. i just wanted to make sure that apple doesn't achieve 2gb with 2 1gb sticks (which would occupy both slots). if they ship with one 2gb stick, i can but another 2gb stick to upgrade to 4gb (2gb stick only costs $40 at crucial, bto from apple costs $100).
    anyway, does anyone know how they ship?
    thanks

    All I can say is be sure to hold on to the Apple installed RAM in case the RAM you buy turns out to fail. You'll at least be able to tell if the RAM you buy failed, or if the RAM slots themselves have failed neccessitating a logicboard repair. Also be sure the RAM you get is indicated to be compatible for the iMac you buy not just by Apple spec, but by Mac model as the manufacturer knows it to be. Many RAM may appear to be the same spec on the surface, but some are optimized for the specific vintage of Mac model in question.

  • How much ram can my iMac take?

    Hi all, just bought a iMac a few days ago and I'm just wondering how much ram can it take as I want to upgrade it. It didnt come with a manual, so I don't know.
    Here's the spec so far
    Early 2008 20"
    Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT 128 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
    Thanks for any help in advance

    There are two answers: the official Apple answer and the "you're on your own" answer.
    1 - For the official iMac max RAM, see iMac Memory specifications and upgrades
    2 - For the "your're on your own" answer, everymac.com has a list of the Actual Maximum RAM you can put in every model Mac.  In many cases this is more than the official maximum RAM.
    After deciding how much RAM you want to put in your iMac, I suggest going to Crucial.com and use the memory advisor or system scanner to see what RAM modules are compatible with your iMac.
