Optimal Memory for 2.64Ghz MacBookPro

I am looking at purchasing a MacBookPro with the intent to use it for working on RAW images or picture files from my Nikon d90 camera. What is the max RAM it can be configured with if I am going to get the 2.64Ghz processor. And, any other recomendations regarding other video options to minimize transfer times and maximize output? I don't plan to use PhotoShop but a more user friendly photo editing program I think produced by Nikon that is not as memory intense. PS: I have always been a PC user and this will be my real MAC experience.

Not sure of the Dell Inspiron 19 laptop screen size, but I would think it's 1920 x 1080 or 1920 x1200. The Canadian Dell store doesn't seem to offer that model anymore but the Dell Inspiron 17 with Core i5 processor has an optional screen with 1080p video. Your daughter's Macbook is likely 1280 x 800. I mentioned the three sizes for the 15" and 17" Macbook in the prior post.
For the 15" Macbook Pro screen with 1440 x 900 pixels, the resolution is about 110 ppi (pixels per inch). I think the resolution on the 27" iMac I have is about 109 ppi and I can attest that it's quite good. For the 1680 x 1050 option, the resolution is about 129 ppi which is significantly better in terms of sharpness. To compare that with the 17" screen, 1920 x 1200 pixels, the resolution is 133 pixels per inch so the higher resolution option on the 15" screen is about the same as the standard 17" screen.
But the increased resolution per inch means text and graphics will appear smaller on the screen. This may not be an issue for everyday tasks like e-mail and general web-surfing. But with productivity applications such as Aperture and Photoshop, some of the labels and text fields will be fairly small and that can be a problem for some. For your everyday tasks, there are ways to make the text (and sometimes graphics) appear larger by using resizing options in the operating system such as the COMMAND + keys and COMMAN - keys. But there's no easy way to increase the system font size used in the ubiquitous Apple Menu Bar and some have complained it's too small with high resolution screens.
Obviously it would be good to see the high resolution screen in a store, but it may not be possible since often the stores only carry the standard equipment, no options added. Take a look at the size of text on the 17" Macbook Pro and that will be very close to what you'll see on the 15" with the optional higher resolution screen.
Is it worth it? If it was me, I would go for the higher resolution screen for four reasons. First, you will see more information on the screen and that can be very handy making things easier. Second, what you see will be sharper albeit smaller and the increased sharpness can make everything easier on your eyes given you can still read the text (or you resize the text). Third, there is something we expect will arrive in the future called "device independent resolution" (or something like that) which will likely solve the problem of some application's fonts appearing too small on higher resolution per inch screens.
With the current technology to display texts, the fonts are redrawn each time you change the size so that the fonts appear smooth and look good at any size (this isn't true of the text images in many e-mails and some web pages but applies to normal text usage). This is done to avoid jagged edges on curved edges of the font or other distortions s you make the font larger or smaller. With device independent resolution, the application tells the system, this font should be 1/4" high and the system will adjust the rendition of the font so that on a screen with 72 ppi or a screen with 144 ppi, that text will always appear 1/4" high.
We have no idea when this capability will come to Mac OS X, but it should arrive someday. When that happens you'll have another reason to be glad you had the highest resolution per inch screen. I tend to try to future-proof my purchases so the third reason makes sense to me; I understand when others say it's smartest just to buy what you need today because you can't predict tomorrow. When newer technologies arrive the day after 'tomorrow', simply buy again if you want the new features. I just like my hardware to be ready for changes that are done with a simple software upgrade like device independent resolution; you make your own decisions.

    What I have done: I had first constructed an
    1. Array(Let it be array1 for discussion)  of three elements(For three time intervals)  each element is a cluster(Let be Level 1 Cluster)
                    2.Cluster(Level1) has 7 arrays(Let them be Level 2 arrays) to represent 7 physical quantities
                From the concepts of arrays in the C each element of the array occupies same memory space. But does this concept applicable here. As I have elements in a cluster(level1) as arrays(Level 2). Each one of the array(Level2) could be of different size depending on user input.
    If there is another way to handle them please help me with ur valuable suggestion.

    I don't quite understand why optimizing memory here is required as the
    data set does not seem very large.  That being said, clusters use
    (relatively) a lot of memory, and nested arrays/clusters are generally
    considered poor programming.  It seems to me that this can be
    handled with a 3D array (much more memory efficient):  3 pages for
    the time intervals, 7 rows for the physical quantities and an
    indeterminite number of columns for the individual elements.  How
    to handle the array depends on what are valid values for the individual
    elements.  If the data type is numeric and 0 is not a valid user
    input value, then it's easy.  Just build the array row by
    row.  Each row will have the number of columns equal to the
    largest number of individual elements entered.  Data that has not
    been entered by the user will be 0.  For example, at time interval
    1:
    PQ1: 9 2 7 4 1 8
    PQ2: 8 7 2
    PQ3: 1
    PQ4: 4 6 8 2
    PQ5: 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
    PQ6: 4 2 7 9
    PQ7: 2 4
    The first page of the array would be:
    9 2 7 4 1 8 0
    8 7 2 0 0 0 0
    1 0 0 0 0 0 0
    4 6 8 2 0 0 0
    2 3 4 5 6 7 8
    4 2 7 9 0 0 0
    2 4 0 0 0 0 0
    If the data type is not numeric or 0 is a valid value, I would
    initialize a 3D array that is 3 X 7 X (something larger than the max #
    of individual elements) with some sort of invalid value.  Then,
    as  the user inputs individual elements, replace the appropriate
    array element.  This also has the advantage of creating the array
    ahead of time so LabVIEW will not have to create any memory buffers.

    Hi Experts,
    Am new to the database administration side. Need help/suggestions from you all. My requirement is narrated below:
    I was going the kernel parameter for oracle 10gr2. But I have a doubt the following two parameters.
    kernel.shmall=2097152 (Default)
    kernel.shmmax=2147483648 (Default)
    Also I know that this is the recommended value for these two parameters. But just want to check if I have physical RAM of 4GB then what should be the optimal value for these parameter.
    Also can anyone suggest how to set the optimal value for these parameter.

    You can always set to the "Install" size and after it completes reduce them. You can move them down 25 to 30 percent in most cases.
    The default size for SHMALL in RHEL 3/4 and 2.1 is 2097152 which is also Oracle's recommended minimum setting for 9i and 10g on x86 and x86-64 platforms. In most cases this setting should be sufficient since it means that the total amount of shared memory available on the system is 2097152*4096 bytes (shmall*PAGE_SIZE) which is 8 GB. PAGE_SIZE is usually 4096 bytes unless you use Big Pages or Huge Pages which supports the configuration of larger memory pages.
    SHMMAX should not exceed 4294967295 on a 32-bit system. On x86-64 platforms, SHMMAX can be much larger than 4GB since the virtual address space is not limited by 32 bits.
    If SHMMAX is too small, you can get error messages like :
    ORA-27123
    I almost always go with the recommended settings even on tiny 1GB systems.
    With a 4GB system these probably are not worth changing.

    I've rumaged through Oracle documentation on the above topic but can't find the answer I'm seeking:
    How do you determine the optimal size for your tempfiles? Are there rules to guide one in this area? For example for a 50G database, how do you determine if it's 2G, 3G or 4G that's best for the database? What about a 500G database?

    It's the size of the sets, as you say. And in a data warehouse, the data sets can be very large. I'd say that in an OLTP database, then the useage of temp would (should) be low; but in a data warehouse, all bets are off: one-off end of month runs; director wants a monolithic report running; all that sort of DWH-related type of processing, which, by its nature, happens all the time. Similarly, a large number of users (e.g. users of, say, a Third Party BI tool) amy lead to lots of big sorts, owing to the ad hoc nature of their queries. Standard DWH stuff.
    I don't often see tiddly-widdly bits of SQL in data warehouses, like your SELECT COUNT(*) FROM tab$ example. It could be done, sure, but more likely will be bit, fat queries, which a DWH is designed to deal with. And a lot of temp may be required.
    From that 6-years old (but relevant) article (my emphasis): "For example, if you join two *large* tables, and Oracle cannot do the sort in memory (see SORT_AREA_SIZE initialisation parameter), *space will be allocated in a temporary tablespace for doing the sort operation*."

  • Optimal Settings for FCP6 on MacBook Pro?

    Up until a week ago, I've worked mostly on a Mac Pro with Final Cut Studio 2. I've been fortunate enough to get a MacBook Pro (2.6Ghz) also outfitted with FCS2 and I'm wondering if there is such a thing as "optimal settings" for running FCS2 on the portable notebook.
    I'm referring to such things as memory and cache settings and Playback control, etc. I would like the MBP to run FCS as efficiently as possible. I know I won't get the same power-crunching ability as the Mac Pro but does anyone have any ideas?

    We have a 2.4Ghz MBP with the 256 MB video card.
    We have 4 GBs of RAM, which you should consider.
    However, without indicating what codec and cam you will be using, there isn't much more to say.
    If you are working with a DV or HDV camcorder, for example, use an ExpressCard 34 FW or eSATA card and an external HDD for media.
    That creates independent FW buses if you go that route or a FW bus and a eSATA HDD connection.

    Chapter one page 5 gives the supported memory allowances.
    Because you have an Intel based chipset and processor you can install 2 x 8 GB of memory for a total of 16 GB.
    Had you had an AMD based chipset and processor, the maximum would have been limited to 8 GB.

    At the present time, the only way to clear that is to restore the phone as new.  Perhaps a future iOS update will give us the option to clear that cache.

  • Memory full.Not enough memory for operation.

    To the Report Design Team,
    It has been suggested that I post this issue here based on another thread I started: Re: Memory full.Not enough memory for operation.
    The template contains a single 24 bit PNG image as a background in the Page Header section, plus 9 image records from a SQL Server image field over 3 pages (3 images per page).  The images are all JPG at 3000x2000 (digital camera).
    To summarize, we are experiencing three problems.
    1. CR2008SP2 Designer issues a Memory Full error when Exporting to PDF.
    2. Using a 3rd party PDF Printer (Bullzip PDF) and CR2008SP2 Designer generates a PDF, however, the CR2008SP2 API throws a "Memory full" exception suggesting Designer and API are different (see stack trace in linked message above).
    3. With only 3 images on 1 page, CR2008 Designer Export to PDF takes 110 seconds to generate a 24MB PDF while our third party PDF Printer generates the same report in 17 seconds and 580KB.

    The .rpt file size is 14MB with the Data Save option enabled, 12MB without Data Save.  Presumably the 12MB file size is because of the 24bit PNG we have as our background.
    The Designer executes the report in less than a second and we can scroll through all pages and see the image fields perfectly.
    When we Export to PDF, the Designer takes a long time, eventually gets to the 77%, the 7th record and returns "Export report failed" followed by "Memory full".  If we export only page 1 of the 3 pages, it also returns a Memory full error.  However, when the same report is run with only 1 page, that page exports to PDF but with a ridiculously large size and export time.
    The machine has 2GB of physical memory with an 8GB pagefile with Windows 2003 (latest everything).  The process runs up to about 1GB before reporting the memory full error.
    We've also tried a variety of other suggestions posted in the other thread with no success.
    We're happy to provide the RPT file to the Report Team to diagnose the problem.  Ultimately, we need to be able to produce a 15 page report with approximately 45 images.
    Our preferred scenario is fixing problem 2.  The CR Designer seems quite capable of rendering our report and printing it to our third party PDF printer in a timely manner with small size.  However, the API reports memory full.
    The API resides in a dedicated reporting web service with NO other code except for loading the report, setting parameters and printing.  When executing, it uses up to about 1.1GB before reporting the error.
    Are there any other suggestions for fixing what we have?  Are there known problems with large images in reports?  Do we need to lodge a formal support request?

    The Crucial site appears to have recommended the correct spec 4gB RAM stick for your model. Please note that you will need to remove the existing sticks of RAM to install new, so you will need 2x4gB to get to 8gB.
    When your model of computer was designed/built, it was tested with readily available 2x4gB (8gB). After release RAM retailers have tested it with higher amounts, and Apple didn't update their quoted specs.

    So as my title says, i'm trying to increase the memory for my weblogic server in my windows 7 64 bit machine, with 8GB ram.
    The values appear to be: JAVA Memory arguments: -Xms256m -Xmx512m -XX:PermSize=128m -XX:MaxPermSize=512m
    I've done some search from this forum and i've added this to my jdev.conf:
    AddVMOption  -XX:MaxPermSize=1536M (in this one i've only changed the value)
    AddVMOption -Xmx1536M
    AddVMOption -Xms1536M
    And i've changed this: MEM_ARGS="-Xms1024m -Xmx1024m" in my startNodeManager.sh file
    I'm still getting the same line in my server but i need to change the values since i'm not getting the server to run my application very well (it gets stucked in loading my databases and graphs) and i think it will continue untill i get a heap exception error.
    Any ideas of how to change this?

    I'm going to ask you another question and this one is quite important.
    Whenever i run my project a couple of times, i'm not able to retrieve the page, it just gets stuck on loading.
    It just stops the loading, like its a really really slow page. I'm not using a lot of rows in my database so i don't take to much memory but it doesn't load and i know everything is fine but i just added some graphs after testing it.
    Do you know why?
    In the console it says that everything is fine and shows the link for the page but it never loads completely until it gives a error because it does not respond in 600 seconds.
    Strange right?

    I have a mackbook pro and an iMac if I buy a time capsule 2tb airport, I can use it with time machine and what would be the best way to use it.
    There is no particular setup required for TM.. both computers will create their own backup sparsebundle which is like a virtual disk.. Pondini explains the whole thing if you read the reference I gave you.
    and how to use time capsule airport whit other external hd to use my old lacie airport with the new time capsule
    Up to you.. you can plug the external drive into the TC and enjoy really slow file transfers or you can plug it into your computer and use it as external drive.. which is faster than the TC.. and TM can include it in the backup.
    Again everything is explained in the reference.. you are not reading it.

    Or if you want to grab all the paths programatically, try the attached VI.
    Open the top level that you want all the paths from and close all others, then open the
    attached and run it. It will return an array of all the VIs that the VI
    in question uses, including vi.lib VIs. You can filter these as well if
    you like.

    I have a report that is scheduled. Most of the times it runs successfully, however for one parameter setting I continuously get the following error mesage:

    Why would this happen, and how can I resolve? I can run the report successfully in Infoview.

    Hi Penny,
    do you run the report successfully in the infoview using the same parameter setting?
    If it does please try to reschedule the report and monitor (using the task manager) the memory consumption on your windows server.
    Please also make sure that there is enough disk space available on both your server and the destination directory ( '//10.2.25.24/polling_in'. )
