Optimial file format - gif, jpg, or png automatic?

Is there a way to have photoshop to easily and automatically determine and save a file in the format that is the smallest file size?  I upload dozens of files to my web site each day, and instead of saving as each format to see which one is smaller, I'd like photoshop, or another program, to automatically determine which format will result in the smallest file.
Thanks,
DownAndOut

It seems odd to me is that more image editing programs do not offer the functionality that I am inquiring about. I found hundreds of posts accross the internet that say "save as .jpg/.gif/.png to see which one is the smallest". This seems time consuming when a program (when saving) could display the size that the file would save in each format, allowing the user to select which format they wish to save in.
The "general" rule that photographic type images save smaller as .jpg may be the case in general, but does not apply on our web site http://www.mysavings.com. Our content editors upload 300x250 and 120x60 (thumbnails) of the same image. Even when the images are of photographic nature, the 120x60 seem to usually 50% smaller as .gifs, while the same image as 300x250 are 25% smaller .jpg. 50% on is large and really affects loadt ime when we are talking about 2 images on the page. So we are having to adopt a general rule that save the 120x60 as .gif and the 300x250 as .jpg, regardless of the content of the picture. Our image editors do not have the time to save in both formats just to see which is smaller.
It just seems logical that a program could show you the resulting file sizes for each format when saving so you can choose which is smaller. Regardless of affecting quality, because I see no noticeable difference in quality when I just save these images as a .jpg or .gif, the only difference I notice is the file size.

  • How do I convert file to gif, jpg, jpeg, png, bmp, or swf

I mad a page in COMIC LIFE. I saved it, then when i went on photobucket.com, it gave me a message saying
The file "" does not have a valid image extension.
Valid image extensions are: gif, jpg, jpeg, png, bmp, swf.
    HOW DO I CHANGE IT?
    Thanks

I have never used Comic Life, so I can't tell you how to do it from there. But you could open it in Preview. Control-click the page in the Finder and choose Open with... set it to Preview. Once in Preview, do a Save As and change the Format there.

  • Image file formats gif, png, jpeg, tiff

    Hi guys,
I've read a little bit about this, so I know the some basics:
    gifs: lossless, transparency/animation, 256 colors
jpeg: lossy, no transparency, 16 million colors, etc.
png: lossless, 16 million colors (?), newer/better compression and transparency than gif
But I want to hear it from the designers (web and/or print, cause I do both). What format do you guys use for editing/printing photos? I've always archived and printed my photos as TIFFs, they're huge, but this way I just avoid any hassle of quality loss.
I've been reading that I should keep my photos as PNGs and then print final versions as JPEGs...is that true? How do you guys utilize the various file types?
    Thanks!!!

For print I use .tiff's ( just like you ).  I limt .png files to the internet.  I would not convert the .png to a .jpg for print.  If anything, I'd copy the original .png and convert it to a CMYK .tiff or .psd file.

  • How to embed/show an image file (.jpeg or .jpg or .png) into a Oracle 10g report file (.rdf)

    Hi All,
Morning , have an urgent requirement and need some guidance regards this.
we are currently having an existing Oracle 10g reports file (.rdf)  lets say with name : Testing1.rdf .
The report output is getting generated in a pdf format . it opens up in a pdf format..
Now we want to embed an image file lets say : (logo.jpeg or logo.gif  ) into the report output..at run time the image from the image file should show up in the report output.
Could someone please help as to how this could be achieved..and what approach we could follow for this...
    with regards
    Thanks as always !!

    Hi All,
Morning ...just a follow up question to this original post : embedding the image files at runtime into an Oracle Report..
We were able to achieve this by entering the folder location where the image files are place on the server in the REPORTS_PATH env variable in the report.sh file.
Then we update this filename like file1.jpg into a table and from there we fetch this in the Oracle Reports data model directly.
for The layout field we select the option as Image.
    All this works fine..
Issue : The resolution of the embedded image in the generated report output is very low ...means the image appears there but it is not very clearly visible ..is there any way we could improve the IMAGE RESOLUTION in the report output....?????
    With regards

  • How to output 3D Surface Graph as image file (bmp or jpg or png)

I'd like to output a graph from the 3D surface.vi module as a regular
image (like a JPG or BMP).  At this time, I'm going through an
awkward process of taking a screen cap, then isolating the image with
    photoshop (painful and time consuming).
Any idea or input would be appreciated.

RIght-click on the graph and "create...invoke node". On the diagram, select method "get image".
Save the output of "image data" as JPG, BMP, or PNG using the tools from the "Graphics Formats" palette.
(The code shows would get a 24bit PNG image)
See how far you get. Good luck!

  • Changing photo file formats-Making JPG lower case

I am new to the Mac OS and I run OS X 10.5.1 . I am having trouble uploading pics to myspace that have been transfered from my Canon PowerShot A420 camera. When the pics are taken they are saved in jpg. format but the jpg. is actually all caps (JPG). Myspace is saying the file is not recognized. I have also taken pics with Photo Booth and those are also saved in jpg. format and the jpg. is all lower case (jpg.) and those are easily uploaded to myspace. How can I change the JPG to become lower case.

All you have to do is change the filename. You can right click on the file and choose Get Info and change it in there, or you can simply click on the name once and then again to see it highlighted, at which point you can just change the .JPG to .jpg. That is, if you're showing extensions. If not, go to Finder>Preferences, click on Advanced, and check the box to show extensions.

  • Multiple File format Extension

I have created Icon button i.e. Image on the button in Developer Suit 10g.
My question is that here I can only use one Extension in this file default.icons.iconextension=GIF
but I want to use multiple file formats, Can anyone help me
note this file is in the following path
    E:\DevSuiteHome_1\forms\java\oracle\forms\registry
    Please.

Technically, you can use almost any web supported format (gif, jpg, jpeg, png). The entry in Registry.dat is a default. Meaning if an extension is not provided, .gif will be assumed.
This can be easily proven. Create a large button on a canvas and set it to Iconic=Yes. For the image file name, enter a complete url to an image. For example:
    http://www.oracle.com/ocom/groups/public/@otn/documents/digitalasset/439416.png
You can even use animated gifs on a button. Try this one:
    http://www.animatedgif.net/computers/a_10mailput_e0.gif
There are some restrictions. For example you cannot use images with transparent backgrounds. These will appear black. You can also not use images with some compressions types.

  • Can I turn a bmp,  gif, jpeg, or png file into a hyperlink?

    Hello,
I created an image on Photoshop Adobe, and what I'd like to do with this turn into a hyperlink that I can upload to a website.  I was able to turn the pdf file with the same image into a hyperlink, but the website I'm trying to upload it to only accepts bmp, gif, jpg or png files.  That's why I'm asking if there is a way to make an image file using what I've specified into a hyperlink.  Thank you for any insight to my question.  -KD

    Nancy O. wrote:
An image is just an image.  You need HTML or JavaScript code to make it into a hyperlink.
         <a href="http://example.com"><img src="your_image.jpg"></a>
Unless the site you're uploading to is willing to wrap your image inside HTML code like the example above or JavaScript there is no way to make the image file link to anything on its own.
    Nancy O.
But how is it that a pdf file is able to contain a hyperlink within the image and it takes me to my website?  Where on the image.gif, etc., do I attach the code you've posted?  The website I'm wanting to upload the image to, only allows the files with extensions I've already indicated in my op.   Thanx for your reply and help.   -KD

  • Where to put the GIF/JPG files so they show up in Forms Developer

    Hi:
This refers to Forms 10gR2; Forms Builder running on Windows XP......
Where do I put the GIF and JPG files referenced by the "iconic filename" property so that they show up in Forms Builder? By placing them in the jar file, I can get them to appear at runtime, but NOT in development!
I have tried putting the files in the same directory as the FMB, as well as in C:\DevSuiteHome_10g\forms\java (where the image jar file resides).
In each case, I have included the path in the FORMS_PATH environment variables.
    Thanks

    Hi,
For design time, you need to use the UI_ICON and UI_ICON_EXTENSION environment variables. Set them in the registry.
UI_ICON=location where you have the image files.
UI_ICON_EXTENSION=Extension of your image files (ICO / GIF / JPG)
    Edit :
    Refer : http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/forms/pdf/10g/frm10gnewfeatures.pdf
    Search for UI_ICON and UI_ICON_EXTENSION

  • File format for scans?

I'm having a terrible battle with extremely large pdfs that are getting produced by Preview when I simply print 10 or 20 scans to pdf. I've always thought that TIFF was a good lossless format for scans and such and that png was a good format for uploading to the web (which is basically how I handle these issues).
    Should I change this?
I'm noticing that my 300 dpi TIFF scans are 10 MB in size and that if I save out from preview as jpg or pdf that these are then 2 MB. Is this normal?
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15285654/Screen%20shot%202011-11-12%20at%2001.30.43%20PM .png
Does this mean that if I scan the images as pdf or jpg that my pdf prints out of preview will be 1/5 of the size they are now?
    Thanks

  • Nokia Asha 200 image file format problem

hello. I just bought a Nokia Asha 200 recently, and I am happy with it. The only problem that I am currently having is with my phone's captured image's file format. It used to be .jpg and then it suddenly became .nrw and I can't open it when I tranfer the images to my computer. Whenever I convert it it just becomes black. I restored the factory settings of my phone but the format is still .nrw.
I want to know what caused it and how can I revert back the image file format to .jpg.
Thank you so much in advance.
    Good day.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Because Nokia s40 Phones automatically Enhancing the Image Captured and reduces it's size. The reason why you're Photos is in .nrw format because you didn't wait to process it. Follow these steps so it won't occuring again On the Camera Choose Options > Settings > Image Preview > Choose End Manually. Then wait for pictures to be processed you captured (sometimes you will notice that the image enhanced). It also can be done in the background. Hope it Helps.
I love T9 Bar Phones | I used to be a Sony Ericson fan before but they leave the low end Phones so I have to switch to Nokia | LG Optimus L5 II and Nokia 206 3

  • Import Failed, file format not recognized

I have a new Samsung Galaxy S2 phone with 8 mp camera and HD video.  Photoshop Elements 10 doesn't recognize either the photos or videos from the phone.  The file formats are JPG and MP4.  Elements 7 & 9 recognized these files just fine and any files that were already in the catalog from the phone display fine in Elements 10 after upgrading.  I just can't import anything new.  The files downloaded to my computer through the Elements Photo Downloader and will play and display just fine outside of Elements so I know the files aren't corrupt or damaged.  I really need to get this fixed as this device will be my primary mode of taking pictures and video.

    Try this as a test:
Open one of the failing JPG files in another application, such as XnView.  Use that application to save the file.  Then see if Organizer will import that photo.
Sometimes the JPG metadata is corrupted just enough for PSE to choke on it, although other apps can open the file just fine.  Saving the file from another app will re-write the metadata correctly.

  • File Format Issues

Frequently asked questions about saving and converting file formats.

GIF vs. GIF vs. GIF (etc.)
Q: I see several different ways to save a GIF file from Photoshop. What's the difference between them?
A: You can select "CompuServe GIF" format when you choose Save, Save As or Save a Copy (asuming you have a flattened, RGB image) from Photoshop's File menu. That's the traditional way of saving GIFs, and has been available in Photoshop going back several versions. It has limited options and saves a file in GIG87 format.
    B. You can choose "Export > GIF89a Export" from the file menu. This presents you with a few more options and (as the name suggests) saves out a GIF89a format file.
    C. You can choose "Save For Web" from Photoshop 5.5's File menu, and choose GIF from the Optimized File Format menu in the Settings group. You will have many different options to minimize your file size while viewing the resulting image to alow you to maintain image quality. This is usually the best way to save a GIF from within Photoshop. This will generate a file in GIF89a format.
    D. If you want to take advantage of even more advanced web features (rollovers, slicing, animation, etc.) for your GIF, switch over to ImageReady 2.0 and save your optimized image there. You will find similar options as in Photoshop's Save For Web dialog, but ImageReady adds additional features that allow you to slice or animate an image, or create rollovers.

no dear there is not any option as u suggested.
rightnow i am using my canvas and making the bytearray of it and then I am saving this bytearray  with .jpg/.png format with the JPEG/PNG Encoders. but what it does? It makes a single .jpg file of canvas so if there are 3 images in it than it will save entier canvas as .jpg.

  • SaveCurrent File as .PNG automatic, not a copy..smart like

I'm looking for a script that takes the file I'm working on.. usually a .psd looks at the current saved filename and where its existing saved directory location is, and saves out a .PNG file to the same directory overwriting any existing file that might already exist with the same filename and extension.
So if i'm working on buttons.psd, I use the script.. it should save out a buttons.png to the same directory as buttons.psd ... no message prompts pestering me to remove the stupid " copy.png" string.. and no prompts about the interlaced choice. Just automated.. it would be HUGE time saver.
wouldn't mind if it could be adapted to do the same for other formats like .jpg, .gif aswel.. but mainly working with png files, and the constant baby sitting and ok promts, renaming files (ie removing the sodding copy string.. " ok the overwrite propmt etc etc etc .. .. the constant Adobe donkey **** application workflow that has still yet to be improved is really killing.
