Optimisation in iWeb

How easy is it to optimise site made in iWeb? easily add alt and title tags, change page titles, descriptions etc? Does anyone experienced with making a few sites think that it is just a blog simple tool for people to make personal home pages or can it be used for more sophisticated business purposes? What exact problems arise when putting sites on servers other than iDisc?

But adding pages is an issue. Please confirm
that if an extra page was built in iWeb, and
uploading with fetch that that would not change
anything on previously uploaded and custom edited
pages.
If you use the Navigation bar at the top of iWeb pages, adding a page will add the new page to this bar and thus change all previous pages in that area. But this is only within iWeb and what it publishes locally. I don't see how anything new that you upload via ftp could possibly change anything in a page already uploaded.
BTW I had heard that uploading to non .Mac servers
was a 'hassle' As an example Amber on Call For Help
TV said so. By hassle however they really meant as
per normal ftp (which I have never thought of as a
hassle) I had imagined odd code or script etc that
would not easily translate to a non-mac server. Seems
that is wrong.
Yes, that's wrong. It's basically just the same as any other program, aside perhaps from not having a way to change the encoding to Latin-1 to please some badly run servers. The fix for this is given in my note. The MacWorld review of iWeb also has a totally erroneous and idiotic passage in it about about ftp which should be ignored.
would you,
considering its cost $150AUD (for family pack to get
it onto 3 computers) etc consider iWeb a good
investment for someone doing a fair bit of web work
as described (yesterday went live with this site,
took me 6 days to develop.
http://www.voiceinmyhead.net )
Nice site! The best way to determine whether iWeb makes sense for you is probably to go through the forum a bit and see what others have been doing and things they don't like. I've never made anything complicated myself.
Say I registered 'FastSites.com' Would that on .mac
become .Mac.FastSites.com or other variation, or does
the '.Mac' dissappear from the name entirely?
With forwarding, someone would type "fastsites.com" into their browser and they would be taken to whatever site is at web.mac.com/username.

  • How can i optimise my iweb site

how do I optimise my web site is the software in iweb?  Is this done before I publish or after I publish through the FTP server host?

There are two types of optimization - search engine optimization and optimizing your files for faster download....
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/Search-Engine-Optimization/SEO.html
    http://www.iwebformusicians.com/Search-Engine-Optimization/Optimize.html
The first is done post publishing and before upload. The second is best done at the same time but can also be carried out when the files are on the server.

  • Optimising an iWeb site

Just need to know if this is correct.
A lot of the images contained on the iWeb templates are quite large.
If I show package contents on the main iWeb app then goto - Resources - Themes - Open package contents of the theme - goto the Shared folder.
This folder seems to contain the main images.
If I take these images in to Photoshop and export for web at a lower amount of colours to reduce the size of the overall file and then resave back into the folder.
    Does this sound good??
    GetDex

Yes, but keep in mind you will have to do this each time you publish your website. You should use the Save For Web feature in Photoshop.
You may also want to try RAGE WebCrusher which optimizes images and web page files. Of interest to iWeb users is its ability to optimize PNG files better than Photoshop without losing image quality.

  • Why does safari load iWeb authored pages so slow compared to, eg, firefox?

Safari latest Version 3.1.2 (5525.20.1) takes at least four times as long to load one of my iWeb authored pages as Fireforx 3.0.1. (That's with both apps having empty caches - if they've both been to the page before Safari performs even worse in comparison. One would have thought if any app was going to be optimised for iWeb pages it'd be Safari. Apparently not.
I've search here and in the Safari fora, and tried the delete safari plist, reset safari etc.

  • OPTIMISING  IWEB--- SO SEARCH ENGINES CAN SEE IT

    Hello
please tell me how do I optimise my I website
so search engines can pick it up and show it to a wider audience rather than the ones I send an e-mail link to.
is this possible? I know this can happen in a Dream weaver site, but can it happen in I Web, if this can be achieved can somebody please tell me how to go about it.

  • How can I get iWeb gallery to display high-res images from iPhoto?

    Hi,
I'm trying to add high-res images to an iWeb gallery from iPhoto and cannot get the gallery images to display in high-res (downloaded photos are fine).  iWeb settings for importing unchecked for optimisation. Page in question: http://www.samuelboden.com/Samuel_Boden/Gallery.html
    Any ideas?

Since iWeb has been discontinued by Apple I'm skeptical if you'll get any help on how to hack the application in order to have larger images in the slideshow.  Since MobileMe will be discontinued this June 30 and with it the galleries you might stat looking for an alternative.
One alternative that gives the user considerable latitude in image size and quality is Jalbum.  It offers nearly 100 themes or skins.  This demo page has one theme that lets you change skins on the fly: Jalbum Examples plus a couple of others.

  • HTML Code query - does iweb turn my text to graphics?

    Hello
I'm a bit of a novice but thanks to iWeb I've been able to build myself quite a competent commercial website. As the company is growing I'm suffering from the problem of not being able to edit the code until the site is published - as I have a shopping cart on the site there is a lot of code to input every time I want to make a small change. Also, because I am trying to optimise my profile in the search engines I have to add a lot of title and description words at the front end of every page after it's published. Because of this I decided to import the site into Dreamweaver and see if I could edit the code there. As a result I noticed that the imported iWeb pages showed my text boxes as a graphic and I couldn't click on the text and edit. This got me worrying that search engines too were seeing all my carefully worded text as graphics instead of words which in my understanding would hinder the site slightly when it comes to SEO. I found Dreamweaver slightly exceeded my capabilities - for now - so I am left inputting HTML as before but I am very worried about this graphics issue - does anyone know if this is the case?
    Thank you in advance
    The website is http://www.thelittlethings.info

Thank you - I'm not an expert either and thank you for your suggestion. I have looked at the source as you say but the code at the front of the main text panels says . . .
    <img usemap="#map3" id="shapeimage_11" src="Boys%203-5%20years%20files/shapeimage11.png"
and .png is a graphic isn't it?
Very confused and my knowledge of Dreamweaver is so limited that I wouldn't know why it would translate the text into a graphic panel if it isn't.
Please help - I don't want to work on my seo so hard if it's a fruitless task

  • Iweb Blog ftp or mobile me?

I have just designed a website in iweb that I ftp through godaddy. Took a while to make that decision, but at least I have complete design control! I am doing pretty well and now at the search rankings stage and realize that iweb isn't great at that. Read some of the articles here on search rankings and downloaded the SEO guide and going to take actions with that, and also bought the godaddy search optimisation pack and intend to place the metatags/descriptions etc on my pages.
BUT, I now want to design a second site which is just a blog, which obviously isn't showing up through godaddy, so need to mobileme it. But, with a blog, how do you add the metatags etc to the pages, and are their individual pages for each blog posting? Does mobile me make it easy to go into each file and make the blog searchable? Just not sure whether to just design blog pages myself in iweb rather than their formatted ones, and use godaddy instead?
So, in short - mobile me with formatted iweb blog? or design own blog and ftp with godaddy - which makes the pages more searchable?

Welcome to the discussions. You'll probably have better luck making your blog pages more searchable if you use a dedicated blogging platform — most of them allow tags to be specified.
MobileMe is slow and problems with iWeb's blog are a recurring theme on these forums. For a success story with a non-iWeb blog hosted on WordPress, see this old thread:
To blog or not to blog
And to link to an external blog from iWeb's navbar:
Create a blank internal page titled "Blog" (Actually you can name the page whatever you want.) Then in that Blog page add an HTML Snippet with the following code:
    <script type="text/javascript">
parent.window.location = "http://www.yourblogname.com"; // change this to your own URL
    </script>
...Once published, clicking on "Blog" in the navbar will immediately redirect to your external Blog page. (Thanks to Cyclosaurus for the code).
SEO is important to you, but iWeb is designed for personal sites and, as such, Apple apparently thinks there's no need for Google. Web-design apps for business sites tend to integrate SEO — Sandvox Pro is an example:

  • Meta Tags:  How to Paste into iWeb pages?

I created Meta Tags on Go Daddy. I'm not really sure what Meta Tags are, but I understand they help my web site with keywords and search engines. Here's the Meta Tag codes I created (appears to be three codes).
<title>Dana Point Bodycentre for gift certificates massage skin care body treatments</title>
<meta name="description" content="Dana Point Bodycentre offers gift certificates, gift centre, day spa services for massage, skin care, body care, body treatments, medical skin care, botox, laser hair removal, med spa services and specials">
<meta name="keywords" content="Dana Point, Bodycentre, massage, skin care, gift ideas, gift certificates, gift centre, holiday, specials, book online, instant gift certificates, botox, medical skin care, laser hair removal, med spa, therapist, boutique, retail">
Go Daddy says to "paste the Meta Tag into the Header of my page." I don't understand what they mean by that. I asked them for more help, but they won't help me any further. I need to know exactly where to paste these codes? I created these codes for my Home page, so I suppose the codes go into the .HTML file, or the .file for the web folder. But where? On the .HTML file, when I open it up in Text Wrangler, I see a lengthy text of codes. Where do I paste these codes? And what is the "header" of my page mean?

NOTE 1: about Meta-Tags and Search engine optimization:
Some time ago you could "feed" search engines with words by putting them in the meta tags. Nowadays search engines ignore those tags (probably due to spamming) and only look at the content.
I never did any Meta Tags and it seems to me that my site works fine without Meta Tags on google... Google include PageTitle and PageContent and it works great without any optimisation. Another issue with Meta Tags on iWeb now is that if I publish to a folder I can add MetaTags with text editor but next time I publish to a folder iWeb will overwrite that file and Meta Tags are gone... I then would have to make them all over again... Time... Time... Time...
Bottom line: I see no need for Meta Tags
But people reading this... You're free to decide by your own... it's up to you...
    *5 TIPS:*
    -Update your sitemaps
-Make a second nav bar made of text links as previously explained
-Further use synonyms in your content. Write your content so that it fits as good as possible everything a 'googler' could search for.
-Search engines don't look for tags, they look for the content of your pages.
-In the end it’s all about three things: Content, Content and Content

  • IWeb R.I.P. - best options?

With Apple's disgraceful treatment of iWeb/MobileMe users (they have bluntly refused to tell me whether they will continue developing iWeb or the hosting they currently do on MobileMe - surely they must have SOME idea???) does anybody have any recommendations for an iWeb replacement?
I've looked around and find RapidWeaver a bit opaque, whilst Sandvox and Freeway look better... but what I cannot gather is which is best in terms of non-template use, widget availability, slideshows, contact forms and, most importantly search engine optimisation.
Does anybody have any experience with any alternatives should iWeb, as is widely expected, be scrapped?

You could try going down the CMS route if you already have a domain name and some hosting space with somewhere like GoDaddy.  If you do this, then you could try out Drupal or Jooma.
You could also try WordPress, but try http://wordpress.com rather than .org.  WordPress is predominantly for blog, but you can create a whole website there including a blog without too much of a problem and you can also link domain names too.
You could also check out things like http://www.weebly.com or http://www.posterous.com.  These are all online options to be check out including WordPress where you don't need the domain file.
Other than that as you have already said, there is RapidWeaver, which is meant to be good with lots of online support and tutorials.  Can be a bit expense with all the add ons that you have to buy.  Not sure about Sandvox or Freeway.  Freeway Express is available in the Mac App store for about £17.99, but if you go for Freeway Pro, that will set you back about £70.
You could always try Dreamweaver but that is rather a large learning curve and perhaps RapidWeaver is a better in between option.
Someone posted earlier about something called JimDo at http://www.jimdo.com that are helping people to transfer iWeb sites.  Check that out.  I'm not really sure what that is all about.
Having said all this, iWeb is an app and will continue to work in spite of MMe and whatever happens.  The app should still work with Lion, as they are designed to work with intel Macs and ultimately you have another year to find out, so don't do anything hasty.

  • IWeb says 'offline' when trying ftp publishing

I have tried to Publish individual sites using ftp in iWeb but each time I click on Test Connection I get an error message "You are offline. Please check your internet connection and try again" . Of course I am not offline since Safari, Mail , and Transmit (ftp app) all work. I have set up in iWeb all the same information required in Transmit which is working. Does anyone know why I am getting this error message?

Unfortunately, the built in iWeb ftp is notorious for not being that reliable.
This is why lots of people who use iWeb 09, myself included still prefer to publish to a folder from within iWeb and then use either Transmit or Cyberduck to upload. My preference is Cyberduck mostly. I have only used iWeb ftp once to upload and stopped as I did not like it, plus the fact I also use WebSiteMaestro before publishing to optimise my site so uploading via iWeb is not an option now.

  • IPhoto & iWeb

    Howdy,
I have created an album in iPhoto, dragged photos (161 images) into it directly from my events (so no tweaking etc), and then have dragged that album into a web page in iWeb.
Now the problem I have is that I obviously want to optimise my website for space and performance reasons, but what I have just done has resulted in a 380mb gallery in iWeb. Is there a way of "batch optimising" all images in the iWeb page / site before uploading it ?
I want to tackle the issue of large pics in iWeb rather than an image prog.
    Quick help much appreciated.

Forget the notion that you can do everything in iWeb. It's not a Swiss armyknife.
So prepare you pictures beforehand in another app.
    1) In the inspector you can set the size of the published images in a photoalbum.
    2) Or export the picture from iPhoto to a folder and use these exported pictures.
Most solutions are right in front of you. You only have to see them.

  • Iweb - FTP access codes

Just created a site in iweb and want to get it optimised. I need the FTP access codes to pass onto my optimisation company. Any ideas about how to get this information or what they are?
    Thaks. Iain

Do you have a .Mac account? If you do and you are publishing to .Mac, then iWeb does not use ftp, so no codes.
Have you registered a domain name and do you intend to upload your site to this domain name using ftp? If so, then your domain hosting company should give you ftp codes. Go back and speak to them.
Anything else and there won't be ftp codes if you are using a .Mac account.

  • SEO for iweb..... any suggestions

Having used iweb for a while now and hosting our site through mobileme, I am looking at optimising it and generating some search engine traffic. I have tried iweb Buddy with not much success and was hoping someone could help point me in the right direction. Meta tags and all that stuff are a bit beyond my expertise.
Also would like to build a members sign in area of the site for more sensitive information.
    All and any help welcome!

Also would like to build a members sign in area of the site for more sensitive information.
You will need to host your site on a server that supports php or uses Web Shell. For more search the iWeb form for "Web Shell" by user Roddy.

  • IWeb and SEO

    Hi,
Im struggling to know what to do at the moment, I have an iWeb site at the moment which I really like, have bought Rage SEO Tool and have updated all of the tags etc, submitted the sitemap etc and know the site has been crawled but I am not even on the top 10 pages of google for anything other than lost on page 6 for one term.
I have a header tag on there, you can see not very well formatted but wanted to know if it is time to bite the bullet, can the site and move to wordpress which seems to be what all of the other Photography sites are doing and the ones at the Top of Google.... any thoughts, should I keep trying to optimise my site or just move on!
    Site is Hampshire Wedding Photography
    Thanks in advance for advice....

Perhaps Hampshire Wedding Photography is not very unique :
    http://www.google.com/search?q=Hampshire+Wedding+Photography
    About 6.320.000 results.
    But whiteley weddings is :
    http://www.google.com/search?q=whiteley+weddings
    Bingo. First page!
So decide what your name is and what people should search for.
And why is this an iWeb issue?
    Edit :
What is the purpose of the text at the top and bottom of the page ?
Check with your 3rd party app.
