Optimising Captivate 4/5 captures for speed

Folks, I feel embarrassed asking this question. Working with a client that needs the SWF published files through WAN and Citrix. Some of the published files are a whopping 7.5MB, so I've been working to modularise them and cut them down into smaller chunks (up to 1MB). However, now the client is suggesting that the file size is irrelevant and the problem is the use of Flash.
What is the recommendation of the Captivate expert community? Will the SWF file size have an impact in the download-to-PC time and therefore the speed of opening/running of the published files? Or am I wasting my time cutting them down into smaller chunks?

Since SWF is a streaming format, and you can set your Preloader percentages to suit end user bandwidth, you should be able to find a combination that works well with your delivery platform and target audience.  But Citrix is usually used because end user bandwidth is insufficient to support normal network traffic.  So if your client is trying to get Flash content to work over Citrix, they are bound for a rough ride...especially since Flash content is usually animated and contains audio files (most customers using Citrix don't allow audio over it anyway because of the bandwidth the audio consumes).  Your customer might be better off with plain static content if all they have to work with is Citrix.
For what you get (text, images, animation, audio all wrapped in a single compressed package), the SWF format is by far the most versatile and economical package.  Try delivering all of this same functionality via other methods (e.g. pure uncompressed HTML and Javascripting)  and I think you'll find you're up for more download than Flash.
The fact is that Flash format used to be the poster child for the web.  But it's currently in fashion to criticise it in favour of technologies like HTML5 that haven't actually arrived, let alone proven they can duplicate Flash performance and functionality.
If you client wants to ditch Flash as their delivery platform...I say let them go ahead.  The next thing they'll be complaining about is how what they end up with as a solution doesn't deliver the interactivity and sophistication users have become accustomed to with Flash content.  And HTML5 is going to be a lot harder to build and support in the short term as well because it's still too new.  There are no tools like Captivate to use to build it.
I think it's time people actually found out the hard way why Flash enjoys its popularity in the e-learning community and among tool vendors.

  • Pinnacle Video Capture for Mac

After talking with a bunch of salesmen (considering getting a DvD writer), I took the advice of someone in the Apple Store and bought a Pinnacle Video Capture for Mac to copy my laserdiscs. It was $100 before tax, and didn't do stuff I don't plan on doing anyway. I did spend another $25 to get an S-video cable.
I installed the software and connected it up to my LD. I started capturing the movie, and selected S-Video (although in the small window they showed, I didn't see any difference between that and video out. I selected a max time from a limited selection, and let it record.
After a while, I went downstairs and saw that the audio and video were not synchronized at all. I let it continue.
After a while I came down again, and the movie was finished, so I stopped it. I found the MP4 - it was in the iTunes movie directory, and played it in iTunes. I fast-forwarded it to near the end, the voice and video were way off-set.
I haven't tried burning this yet.
Quicktime player doesn't think this is a valid movie file. I selected "open with" and "other" and the recommended applications had iMovie greyed out.
Why in the world would the audio and video record at different speeds?
Do I have to buy software to edit the movie down to the correct size?
    My Mac has:
    Model Name: iMac
    Model Identifier: iMac7,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 4 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: IM71.007A.B03
    SMC Version: 1.21f4
I noticed the Pinacle Video Capture program was still running, so I tried to quit it, and got a window asking for my administrator ID and passsword to allow Pinnacle Video Capture to make changes. Why?

The audio drifted out of sync because the Dazzle doesn't support locked audio. For short videos (say, under 10 minutes) this won't be very noticeable but when you capture longer videos it becomes progressively worse over time.
What do you want to do with your Laserdisk copies? Watch them on your iPod? Edit and/or burn to DVD?
A device like the Canopus ADVC-110 will do the video/audio conversion properly, keeping the audio and video in sync regardless of the length of your video. It converts to DV, not to MP4, and you would use it with iMovie or Final Cut (not iTunes). However you can export your video from iMovie or Final Cut to iPod/AppleTV formats.
The Dazzle device will not work directly with iMovie or Final Cut.
ps. If all you really want to do is transfer your Laserdisc videos to DVDs, it will be a whole lot faster & simpler to get a DVD player/recorder that has analog inputs and record directly to DVDs. There are many brands & models to choose from and many good ones are as inexpensive as the $100 you spent on the Pinnacle converter.

  • Best screen capture for using with premiere elements?

i have been scouring the net to figure out how to get better results than what i'm getting with the camstudio (love the program, and it looks great until i pull it into premiere). I have read that it can be a codec issue or an fps issue, but before i follow those trails, i was wondering if there is a screen capture software that works well with premiere, without a lot of hassle. (not necessarily free, just reliable and hassle free with good quality in premiere elements) Anyone have experience with this?
    thanks in advance!

Well, we've used Camtasia and Adobe's Captivate to make tutorials for http://www.muvipix.com. They're both excellent, and I've never had a problem with either.
Chuck Engels is really the expert on both those program though. You can find him on the Muvipix forum daily.
    Steve.
Would you please provide an update to the process of screen capture?  What does muvipix.com and lynda.com use?  I'm considering a project where my granddaughters create a couple of training videos for kids.  It's a dream, but might work!

  • Captivate Doesn't Capture Screen Toast

    Hello,
We developed an application that notifies users of changes with a screen toast. We went to use captivate to begin developing training material and Captivate does NOT capture the screen toast??!! I'm doing full screen captures which works great as it captures mouse action, the entire desktop, audio, everything BUT the screen toast???
    What am I missing??
    JB

    Hi again
Thanks for the example. Almost thought you didn't supply one as it wasn't visible straight away. Then noticed you elected to attach instead of using the Camera. But at least we can see what you are talking about!
So you taught an old dog a new term. I'd never heard of Screen Toast prior to today.
I'm wondering if what you are seeing is occurring in a "layered" window. I don't believe Captivate captures these beasties. You also see it when you try to capture some full motion clips. As these sometimes appear in layered windows, all you get in Captivate is a blank area where you expected to see the video.
Assuming you are able to capture the area using something like SnagIt, you could insert the "toast" as a separate image object and time accordingly or possibly merge into the background after properly placing it.
You should also report this as a bug to Adobe. (Link for doing that is in my sig line.)
    Cheers... Rick

  • MSI ti 4200 128 MB and Problems with "Need for Speed: HighStakes"

Does any one know of a fix for "Need for Speed: HighStakes" with the new 45.32 drivers. When trying to start this game it won't even load, the screen goes dark for a second and then falls back to the desktop. Did the same thing with 43.45, but if I install the drivers that came with the Video card ( I think they were 31.XX) then the game works fine. Haven't come across any other games that won't run except this one, some examples that work fine are UT 2003, C&C: Generals, Warcraft 3, Hot Pursuit 2.
    System:
XP pro OS (sevice pack 1) DirectX 9
    Athlon 1800
    512 MB RAM
    MSI nforce 2 Main board
    MSI GeForce 4 4200 ti 128 MB 8X AGP
    Thanks for any info.

well I "bugged" the game makers (EA) and the response is that the game doesn't suport Windows XP. Strange that the older nVidia 31.xx drivers work fine with the game. Also played it on my last machine which had XP and a ATI radeon video card. OH well who ever said Direct X was supposed to be backward compatible.
Too bad the older drivers don't work so well with the newer games.

  • How to Optimize SCXI 1600 for speed with Thermocouples

I'm working on a data acquisition system for my engineering firm and I'm trying to find a way to use our new thermocouple system as fast as possible.
The requirements for the DAQ process are:
Read 32 voltage channels from a PCI-6071E card
Read 32 thermocouple channels from a SCXI-1600 with an 1102C accessory
Complete the entire operation in under 5ms (this is so other parts of the program can respond to the incoming data quickly and trigger safety protocols if necessary)
Using LabVIEW 7.1 and MAX 4.4, I've got the voltage channels working to my satisfaction (with traditional DAQ VIs) and the rep rates I measure when I run the program are around 1ms (I do this by putting the DAQ code in a loop and reading the millisecond timer every time through that loop, then calculating the average time between loop executions).  I have been trying to get similar performance from the thermocouple channels using DAQ Assistant and DAQmx.  Some of the problems I've encountered are:
Very slow rep rates with 1-sample and N-sample acquisition modes (300-500ms)
Good rep rates when I switch to continuous mode, but then I get buffer overflow error -200279.
When I attempted to correct that error by setting the DAQmx buffer to overwrite unread data and only read the most recent sample, the calculated sample rate went to 20ms.  It was around 8ms when I left the error unhandled and continued acquisition.
At this point I'm out of ideas and am just looking for something to try and optimize the DAQ process for speed, as much as is possible.
    Thank you for any help.

I guess I would be interested in checking out your code to see if there is anything I can recommend on changing.  However, I do have a few general Ideas of how to improve your performance.  These recommendations are purely based on what you could be doing to slow down the speed of the program because I am not sure how exactly you have everything set up.
-Are you setting up the task and closing the task each time that you read from your daq card?  the way to get around this is to only have the DAQmx read vi in the while loop so you do not have time alloted for opening and closing the task each time.
-Try using a Producer/Consumer architecture.  This architecture uses queues and splits the aquisition with the post processing.  Here is a link to how to set up this architecture and some information on when to use it.

  • Best practice for speeding up animation...

    Hi,
What would be best practice for speeding up an animation? - Increase the frame rate, or is that considered cheating (already set to 25)?
The alternative would be to manually adjust the length of the tweens on each layer.
~ Let me know what you'd do.
    Thanks!

Keep the frame rate as low as possible to create acceptable smooth tween and adjust the length (amount of frames) of the tween on the timeline. By keeping frame rate low you are reducing the amount of code execution per unit time (i.e. 24 FPS or 0.04167 seconds per frame)

But how do you install the drivers if Bootcamp is running interference?
Bottom line, I'ev tried to install three different versions of updated ATI driver sover the last few momnths and on each and every occassion have ended up with the original Bootcamp driver. A number of current games are unplayable on a Mac running Bootcamp as a result.
And if I can't run the software I want, then Bootcamp is as useless as boobs on a bull.

  • Excise is not captured for all or Second line item.

    Dear Experts,
Excise is not updating for all the line items in while making Goods Receipt.
while making goods receipt excise is not capturing for all the line items.
but excise is captured at header level, its presumed that all the line items
are capturing excise, please suggest me,what might be the reason.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
As i think, you are creating Goods receipt With Excise option "Only Part1" in MIGO, then system will update only J_1ipart1 table with qty and without internal document number, after J1IEX only system will Update J_1IEXCDTL  table with all value and qty and internal document number.
Suppose you have done the GR -Option' 'No excise entry" then system will not generate any Excise realted tables. Then you should  Capture Part1 entry with help of J1I5 t code, then system will update qty field , here also system will not update internal doc number.
Write a Updation program for J_1IPART1 table for qty field

  • Change Capture For Siebel OLTP task in DAC running for more than 10 hours

whole etl load used to complete in 2 hours (as on now siebel data having sample data). since last Friday Change Capture For Siebel OLTP task in DAC execution plan running for more than 10 hours. I am not able to trouble shoot the problem because no log for this task
what could be the reason for this problem? how can I fix that problem?
    Appreciate your help
    Thanks
    Jay.

Which ETL is it that is taking the longest (is it an SDE, SIL, PLP?). I have seen someOracle vanilla ETLs coded in a way that is very ineffective. Check the DAC and Informatica logs and find out which mapping it is and where the delay is (e.g. SQL, write to DB..etc).

  • Problems with Image Capture for Epson Scanner

When using image capture for my Epson scanner, at the Image Correction, when I select Manual I get no menu options.

There is no Epson scanner utility for Mountain Lion, it appears. Even Epson's FAQ defers to Image Capture and says it only provides software for image modification.
    http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&info Type=FAQ&oid=207953&foid=214278&cat=214269&subcat=214264
Unfortunately Image Capture completely fails to provide the service it should be expected to. The 3rd party software VueScan seems like it would be adequate once I learned how to manipulate it a little more, but ultimately the only decision I can justify is to hook up the scanner to my Windows PC and use the TWAIN-based scan utility there.
If there's anywhere I can make an official plea to Apple to get Image Capture in a workable state, feel free to point the way.

  • Live for speed (racing sim) vs bt's packet shaping

For the past 1/2 a year I've been getting more and more annoyed at bt broadband. Now I understand that they have to packet shape because its their fair usage policy but now its started affecting this game, live for speed. Its a online racing simulator that becomes impossible to play (constantly unable to find server / excessive lag / disconnecting) until it becomes 00:00 and it suddenly plays fine again. The odd thing is that I play counterstrike: source and Team fortress 2 and they have no problems with packet shaping what so ever.
I thought bt was supposed to have gaming ports as high priority or something like that? Anyway, Live for speed uses different ports, depending on which server your connected to:
    Master Port 8080
    Server IP 192.168.0.107
    Server Name (IHR)IRONHORSE RACING
    Server Port 8888
    Game Port 63392
The master port and game port stay the same, where as the server port changes. So if anyone can help, I will be very grateful!
    Many Thanks
    Ryan

Anything with 192.168.x.x is a local address on your own router, not elsewhere on the internet, usually.
You would be better off asking the question on LFS to be honest.

  • Best Scheme For Capturing For Best MPE Performance?

So let's say I'm still capturing from MiniDV tape @ 720p24. What's the best scheme for capturing for best MPE performance? I have a new HP Z800 with (so far) one i7 4-core with 12 gigs of ram and an Nvidia GeForce GTX285.
    [moved from the FAQ forum]

You have to forgive me. I've been using Matrox RT.X2's for so long, I didn't realize there were no codec options when capturing from HDV tape, like there is with the RT.X2. So now I wonder how the MPE handles the playback of HDV captured footage.
I'm anxious to see what my new HP Z800 with one i7 quad core, 12 gigs of ram and Nvidia GeForce GTX 285 can do with PPro CS5. I got it two months ago and haven't even turned it on, waiting for CS5.
