Optimising illustrations - drawn on coloured paper

In my job I'm often required to work with scanned illustrations and optimise them for print.
But my latest job has been printed on coloured paper! Argh! It's an original, like the Illustrations were drawn right onto the book and then the pages laminated. It's a nightmare. I've tried messing around with the colour balance, and (god forbid) the Hue/Saturation sliders, but with no luck. If I manage to neutralise one part of the illustration, the rest is still out of whack (too green for example). There are dozens of pages for me to fix and I think it would be much too tedious to trace them in Illustrator or even to manually fix the colour balance of separate sections of each illustration. They are rough illustrations with black outlines but dark coloured fills. So Photoshop's threshold feature doesn't work well, and the Live Trace feature of Illustrator would fail miserably too.
Does anyone know an easier way around this? Possibly more automated than manually tracing and filling the illustrations?

Thanks Peter. I tried all of the suggested techniques, and your curves technique helped the most. It made the outlines of the illustration clearer at least. But even after some fiddling around, I think the only way I can get rid of the paper colour is to try and trace the outlines in Illustrator, then use fill paths to manually colour the illustration.
I'm not sure if I was following Mylenium's instructions correctly but I made 3 layers, one with the original scan, an inverted copy of the original with screen blending mode applied and another copy on top of that with overlay blending mode applied. That made it look washed out though...

  • Help! Kuler in Illustrator CS4 - changes colours completely

    Why is it that when I use the in-built Kuler extension in Illustrator CS4 the colour values are completely different when I "Add selected themes to swatches" to those on the Kuler website.
    As an random example, take this theme:  soothing by milolily   (http://kuler.adobe.com/#themeID/68960)
    Here's what the colours are on the Kuler website and what they end up being in the Swatch palette in Illustrator:
    R:52, G:97, B:107     --->     R:70, G:107, B:129
    R:52, G:21, B:54     --->     R:82, G:48, B:55
    R:123, G:137, B:156     --->     R:147, G:154, B:169
    R:14, G:22, B:51     --->     R:26, G:32, B:63
    R:160, G:189, B:140     --->     R:182, G:192, B:167
    Check out the screenshot to see how huge the difference is visually.
    I thought perhaps it was something to do with whether the Document Color Mode was set to RGB or CMYK but it doesn't seem to make a difference.
    Any ideas anyone??  It's driving me insane!
    Thanks

    It's because theme is saved in CMYK. The RGB values displayed in kuler website are as per the Web color conversion whereas Illustrator utililises their own conversion. If you notice, in CMYK documents, values are displayed correctly.
    Hope this resolves your doubt.

  • Printing with 'Emulate Adobe Illustrator 6.0' colour setting to Epson Stylus photo 2100

    I have just upgraded my work Mac (G5 Dual 2ghz PowerPC running OSX 10.5.4 and 6gb Ram) to CS3. Brilliant, except when I came to print out a presentation for a client, it keeps crashing illustrator. It always happens when I try and print to my Epson Stylus Photo 2100 using 'Emulate Adobe Illustrator 6.0' colour settings. We have previously be using 'Emulate Adobe Illustrator 6.0' colour settings (as this gets a pretty true colour representation out of our CMYK printer). All the other settings work fine, but lacks the rich colour of the emulated setting. I don't seem to be able to get even close by adjusting the setting in the colour settings panel.
    Does anyone know of a way round this, or of a patch to fix this? I have been checking out the internet, but cant find the Illustrator settings from version 6 (i'm sure it was very basic - but my boss wont except anything but those settings).
    I have tried printing with 'Emulate Adobe Illustrator 6.0' colour settings to our Lexmark laser printer C522 (basic colour results) but it was able to print. Not sure why it should work on one printer but not another?
    The printer we are using is a Epson Stylus Photo 2100, with the latest driver 3.09.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    I wonder if it is a conflict with the system settings or Adobe Bridge settings somewhere. I used to use "Emulate Illustrator 6...", but always had a RIP interpret the information. I can't think of any reason why Illustrator would crash. I'd send Adobe Tech Support a note about it, maybe they can figure out what's going on. By the way, I sometimes switch my settings to "Emulate Illus 6..." and, like you, have had no problems ( but, I'm still in v10 via 10.3.9 ).

  • CS6 Illustrator and InDesign colours are changed when the PDF is saved.

    CS6 Illustrator and InDesign colours are changing when the saved PDFs are displayed on some different computers and for digital print output. I have ensured that the colours are all CMYK and tried different adjustments like preserving the numbers and the like but nothing is working. It prints properly on my inkjet and has displayed properly on different computers.

    You need to read up on color management, color profiles and all that....

    Pdf files made in Illustrator have a problem being displayed on mac computers during the preview when the colors are Pantone colors and will show up as black and white.

  • Illustrator CS4 uninstall colour profile rollback error

    I've been using the same version of CS4 since July with no problem until today. I clicked on my AI desktop shortcut to be presented with a new licence agreement popup. Clicked agree and window disappeared but Illustrator didn't start up.
    I read some other forum discussions on this subject which suggested uninstall - re-install - reboot. I uninstalled all of CS4 but when I tried to re-install it comes up with an error message.
    Adobe support advisor says:
    Issue no: id18308
    Error UninstallColorProfilesRollback occurs preventing the installer from updating existing color profiles when installing the Adobe Creative Suite 4 product
    I have since run through the suggest actions (deleting colour profiles and reassigning permissions) three times.
    When I get to point 9 (Click OK in the "Advanced Security Settings" dialog box. Windows will now reset the permissions for each child object to correspond with its parent) I get the following permissions message "Registry editor could not set security in the key selected, or some of it's sub keys".
    Is this why it's not working?
    Would this also be why my pdf writer doesn't work?
    Please help!!!
    Edit: It seems Photoshop won't work either I need to uninstall and reinstall...great news as it was pre loaded.
    Great work adobe!!

    I fixed it eventually...sorry I meant to post a message.
    I had to run clean script for CS3 and CS4 to completely remove all the components preventing the install.

  • Printing on coloured paper

    I'm trying to get my Officejet Pro K850 to print in black ink on yellow paper but it just rolls the paper through without trying to print. It doesn't seem to recognise the paper. - any clues? The paper is not a pastel colour - it's a medium strong yellow.

    Did you ever solve this?
    I'm doing the exact same thing: three print outs in succession to a specific tray on a network shared printer and occasionally getting a MS Access printing error 2212 counldn't print you object.  Printer setup is saved with the reports one for each printer tray.
    I'm printing from bespoke MS Access 2002 application using runtime to HP LJ 4100 on Citrix terminal server session.
    Any info you have would be appreciated.

  • Illustrator CC text colour prints different to object colour

    Hi there
    Im having an issue in Illustrator CC where text is printing a different colour to an object. Both are using the same cmyk colour and look identical on screen but when printed the text is much lighter.
    If the text is converted to outlines it prints fine. There is no transparency or tint applied. I've tried a few different colours, tried back-saving and converting to pdf, same problem. Will now check our printer settings but in the meantime, has anyone had this problem?

    Here it is with the appearance options shown
    There is only one lay with the box (which I eyedropped color from) and the text.  In this image I selected both of them and its saying they are both blue (if the text was black than a question mark would be in the pallet instead of the blue)

  • Illustrator CC 2014 Colour problems

    Hi, I have been using illustrator for approx. the last 20 years and this is the first problem like this I have had.
    When I draw a black square in a new document, for ease of explanation, and choose process black from the swatch pallet, 100%K, for the colour of the square and then check the properties of the black in the colour picker, the picker is telling me it is 60% CYAN and 90% MAGENTA!!  I checked the properties of the black in the swatch and it is 100% K.
    Am I missing something here? Are there new colour properties I need to look at?
    I've looked at the colour properties and also the way the black is displayed on screen, the same think happens.
    When I change the square to yellow, 100%Y or red, 100%M, 100%Y, I am getting the same 60/90% from the colour picker.
    Is there a problem, as anyone else come found this happens?
    Thank you

    paicer,
    I am afraid your issue is the one described here (one thread linking on to the other):

  • Trying to find how I can edit an image to remove sections so that can print on coloured paper

    Hi - trying to find a way to edit an image to leave blank areas that will appear the colour of the printer paper ?
    Not sure if this makes sense - sorry but thanks.

    Since most printers work by adding color (or not) to white paper, anything left white in the image will be the unmodified color of the paper. That's the easy part. The tricky part is making the other colors look right. (Blue ink on yellow paper will likely look green, for example.) White is hardest, unless you have a printer with white ink.

  • Officejet k7100 - Wont print on darker coloured paper

    Hi all
    I'm hoping for some help. I like playing around and I want to print on some lazer blue paper in greyscale. However, every time I try the printer appears to ignore the fact I have paper in the tray and seems to give an error of 'No paper'. I have tried changing to lighter paper and it works fine, it only darker paper.
    Any ideas or suggestions would be most welcome.
    Thanks, Ethan

    Hi,
    What you can try is telling the printer you are printing on transparent paper. THis should make the printer ignore the media sensor that checks for paper in the printer.

  • Illustrator newbie here- how to create stationary?

    hi guys
    im a housewife doing a lot of handmade art (oil painting, watercolor, etc.) but trying my hand at using Adobe Illustrator for designing simple paper products like invitations and stationary. it's the only way i can help my husband, so im pretty determined to be the least bit knowledgable about it.
    anyone here who can teach me how to create a super simple stationary like this:
    http://ny-image1.etsy.com/il_fullxfull.253005569.jpg
    i'm referring to the "shape" enclosing the word "hello" - like, how can i create that shape on a blank document?
    any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Here's a little picture to explain how your example was done.
    The dotted lines are ruler guides, dragged from the rulers.
    If you don't see any rulers it's Cmd-R on a Mac and probably Ctrl+R on Windows.
    From the top:
    1) With your pen tool draw a curve. Click and drag to produce those handles. The fewer clicks (anchor points) the smoother the curve.
    Note that you can alter curves afterwards by dragging on those handles with the white arrow tool (A) or by holding down Cmd as you draw with the pen.
    2) Once you are satisfied with your curve, double-click on the the reflect tool (O). Use the dialogue to reflect-copy your curve. Move as necessary, snap the 2 ends together and Join them (Cmd+J).
    3) Reflect-copy the double curve and join the ends. Now you've got your basic frame. The others are produced by Option/Shift dragging vertically.
    Now you can experiment with colouring. You may need to re-arrange the objects. The one coloured pink here should be at the back.

  • How do I change colour profile of embedded objects?

    One of my Illustrator CS6 documents was intially created some time ago without paying much attention to colour management issues. I am now trying to put that right and have assigned the document a profile of Adobe RGB (i998). However, each time I open it I am warned that 'The document has an embedded color profile that does not match the current RGB working space'. It also says that the embedded profile is sRGB, while my working space is Adobe RGB. I get this message three times and am assuming that it refers to embedded objects.
    So far, I have failed to find a permanent solution. Do I have to reimport all items that may have a colour profile, having first ensured that they are tagged as AdobeRGB?
    David

    Hi Monika,
    First of all, let me apologise for using the word 'embedded' instead of 'linked'. I was distracted by the fact that the doc in question (an award certificate) is embedded in a Microsoft Access report. That being said, I have now found that all the linked logo images in this Illustrator doc are GIFs or TIFs that don't accept a colour profile (and thus cannot be the trigger for my profile warnings).
    I use a Canon 5D and (rightly or wrongly) have chosen to standardise on a CS working space of Adobe RGB. However, your reference to digital photos is not relevant in this case as there are none in the document. My only concern is to make this document match my working space and no longer trigger irritating profile mismatch warnings. My overall objective is to ensure that the colours will all be correct when it goes to a printer (one of our sponsors, a UK colour paper manufacturer, will be printing the final certificates from a PDF file).

  • Changing background colour with hex code?

    Hi, i want to change the background colour of my documents. So far i can only find 1 way of doing it by going file > document setup then chaning the colour under transparency. I have two problems with this though. First, it seems to only change the colour in illustrator and not the actual image when saved/printed etc. And secondly i need to change the colour to a specific hex colour and i'm at a loss of how to do this.
    I have done a little searching on this but so far i seem to be failing at finding the answer. Anyone help?

    E'ss,
    First, it seems to only change the colour in illustrator and not the actual image when saved/printed etc.
    That is because it is only something like a simulation of coloured paper, so you can see what it looks like when printed on such paper. In other words, it is not part of the artwork and therefore not transferred.
    And secondly i need to change the colour to a specific hex colour and i'm at a loss of how to do this.
    When you set the colour, one option is RGB which is an equivalent to the hex colour. To find the right RGB combination without having to remember/calculate it, you may do as follows:
    1) Create a rectangle (or whatever);
    2) In the Color palette/panel flyout choose Web Safe RGB and insert the desired hex colour (the first two characters as R, the next two as G, and the last two as B);
    3) Switch to (normal) RGB and read the values to use.

  • On Mac. Colours changed after switching to 64bit mode (ver 2.7)

    Been using Lightroom 2.7 on my iMac quite happily and after reading a few articles realised it wasn't running in 64bit so changed it.
    Now colours are all out, most noticeable on reds:
    Before change
    After Change
    Any ideas why this is happening?
    Tried changing back to 32bit and still the same so something has changed.
    Thanks
    Andrew
    P.S Posted this on another forum and just to clarify here also, whilst the above are exported jpegs, these are used purely for illustration. The colour change is happening within lightroom itself, not on export.

    After some advice elsewhere it seems I have 'lost' some of the camera calibration profiles.
    I only have ACR3.1 and ACR4.4 listed and checked on another machine I used I normally have it set to Adobe Standard.
    So, how can I get the profiles back?
    OK. Problem solved. Reinstalled Lightroom.
