Optimization in Acrobat 10

I am having an issue in Acrobat 10 using a Fujitsu fi-1640 scanner.  It scans via TWAIN just fine but when Acrobat does the optimization process occasionally it just sits there forever on the optimization.  When you click cancel the window goes away but it won't let you do anything else stating that the scan process is still in process.  IF I scan via WIA then it works fine.  I have tried disabling the optimization process when scanning but unchecking the box but it still does the process.  I have updated the TWAIN drivers which helped but it did not solve it.  I would be happy to just disable optimization if that is what it took.  Any ideas?

I just wanted to state that I am having the same problem with a fi-6130.  However, in this case it is consistently and not occasionally.  It is happening with two different users on two different computers.  We are using the most current drivers and patch for Acrobat X.  I would love to hear a solution.

  • Where is PDF Optimizer in Acrobat X Pro?

Just downloaded the trial version of Acrobat X Pro (said to be a full version).  New menu system - cannot find "PDF Optimizer" screen which was under "Advanced" tab on previous versions.
Have added all the available "Tools" to my Tool Panel and have tried Adobe's not so helpful online help.   I'm fairly new to Acrobat -- can anyone point me in the right direction?
Would buy Acrobat 9, but not showing as option on Adobe products anymore.

  • Some links look clickable but don't work - Word 2010 with Acrobat PDF creation

    Windows 7
    Latest Acrobat subscription
Word - Office home and student 2010
I can create PDFs via Acrobat and Word on Windows 7,  but after editing the PDF with Acrobat on Mavericks OS X, only in-document links remain clickable. External web hyperlinks, both exposed URLs and blue text with URLs hidden under link text do not work in the PDFs that are edited on MacOS. They look like they work, because in the PDFs the hand cursor appears and you can click the links, but nothing happens in the browser.
I can't find any troubleshooting information about this.
    My process:
Word: Options: Advanced - remove check in "use ctrl-click to follow hyperlinks"
Convert file using the Acrobat tab in the Word ribbon.
    Set compatibility to Acrobat 8
    Create PDF (icon)
    Click Options
    Check "create bookmarks"
    Convert Word Headings to Bookmarks
    Accept defaults, which are:
    Convert document information
    Enable Accessiblity
    Reflow the tagged Adobe PDF.
The PDF is converted. Links all seem to work as expected.
Take the PDF to MacOS Mavericks, add pages, optimize, using Acrobat on MacOS.
Afterward, only some kinds of links in the PDF work.
This is a new problem that seemed to start when I recently began to use Acrobat's subscription version on Windows instead of FoxIt to convert the Word docs on Windows.
Q: Is this a known limitation that MacOS Acrobat creates unusable links despite the initial PDF conversion being done on Windows Acrobat?
Q: Should I do something additional so that external links remain clickable after processing on MacOs?
    Thanks for any clues.

    Thanks for your reply.
After some experimentation, it seems that the place where *some* links stop working is when I take a PDF file from Windows and optimize it on MacOS with Mac Acrobat Pro. All the links work *except* the kind where the URL is hidden behind blue underlined text. These look like they work but when you click them nothing happens.
So to fix it, I think I need to optimize the PDFs on Windows Acrobat Pro.
The MacOs Acrobat Pro, which I paid many hundreds of dollars for is therefore completely useless for documents with this kind of normal hypertext link.
Also, Windows Acrobat Pro is required in order to ensure that table-of-contents links made in Word (MacOS) continue to work in the PDF. The trick there is to regenerate the TOC on Windows Word before using CreatePDF to convert it.
I hope someone else benefits from this insight, because I wasted weeks of my life trying to troubleshoot this undocumented problem.

  • Why does PDF Optimizer no longer reduce size after CS4 upgrade?

I've been able to successfully reduce the size of the PDFs created from my Illustrator files for years using Advanced> PDF Optimizer in Acrobat Pro. Upgraded to CS4 last week. Now it seems to have reduced everything, but the files are still huge. When I check Space Audit 96% or more is taken up by "piece information".
I've tried changing the Adobe PDF presets, the Document Raster Effects settings, and outlining all text in Illustrator to see if that made a difference. Nothing. The frustrating thing is i've done this for years with no problem. HELP?!?!

Hi, I've found the solution because today it happened to me as well.
Just go to "PDF Optimizer", then click to "Discard user data" and finally to
"Discard private data from other applications": in this way you delete any
information left by Illustrator and your file's size will get reduced.
    It works.
Good luckThanks so much! That works like a charm!!

  • Optimize PDF to a specific maximum size

I also posted this in the feature request forum.
I would like to be able to optimize PDFs of various sizes to a size small enough to email. I would like the images to be automatically down sampled only as much as needed to reduce the final PDF to a specified size. Perhaps a script or plug-in exists?

I've never heard of such a plug-in or script. It wouldn't be easy to develop because it would require explicit knowledge of all the things which can make a file large. Images would be easy to calculate but file overhead, and other things are much more difficult.
Your best bet would to use the PDF Optimizer (Advanced > PDF Optimizer) in Acrobat 9, or File > Save As > Optimized PDF in Acrobat X. In the PDF Optimizer, click the Audit Space Usage button to see what takes up space in the PDF file.

  • Scripting the PDF Optimizer

    Hi folks
I'm trying to find a way to script the PDF optimizer in Acrobat Pro 9 (Win), so it is invoked from JavaScript with the name (or path, whatever) of a profile to use when optimizing.
This feels like it should be a FAQ, but a search of the forums doesn't reveal any posts and I've had no luck with Google or with the Acrobat scripting documentation. I can invoke the scripting UI with
      app.execMenuItem("PDFOptimizer");
... but not select a profile or accept the dialog. There doesn't seem to be a proper scripting API for it. Am I just blind? Or is there no way to do this? It seems like such a basic task to use Acrobat for.
My use case is automating a weekly time-consuming PDF processing task so it can be performed in a couple of simple steps by staff without requiring error-prone checklists. One of the requirements is to save two different optimized versions with different resolutions used for image resampling.

    Thanks for confirming that.
It's such an obvious use case that I guess Adobe must not want Acrobat Pro being used where Acrobat Server could be sold. Oh well. I'd use multivalent or pdftk, but neither offer image re-sampling or attachment stripping at the moment.
This limitation means users have to babysit the script a bit, which is unfortunate, but not the end of the world.

  • Reducing the file size of an XML Form

We have created and launched a number of PDF Forms (created in LiveCycle) for our contacts to download, complete electronically, and email or fax back to us. The problem we are running into is that our email client allows us to only receive files that are 10 MB and smaller. We are finding that many of our PDF Forms that end-users are completing online cannot be emailed back to us because the file size is too large....which creates a problem.
How do we troubleshoot this? We cannot seem to optimize in Acrobat because we receive an error message that says, "This PDF contains an Adobe XML form. Such PDFs cannot be optimized."
    HELP!
    Thank you!

  • Playing flv files in Adobe Reader 7

I created some pdf documents using Acrobat 9 Pro into which I added links to streamed flv files. This worked fine with the video playing in the pop up box but when I put it on the web people opening it with Reader 7 could not play the flv and were prompted to upgrade to Reader 9.2 (which worked). Unfortunately I can't rely on people being able to upgrade and want to find a way fro flv files to be playable via Reader 7. I've tried creating them in Acrobat 7 Pro but couldn't get that to work.  Does anyone have any ideas about why this doesn't work and what to do? Thanks

Your experience is better, than mine. I look after a website for a Electronics Servicing organization. I've created many PDF using Acrobat 3 - 7.0.7 (the older versions on OS9. If however; the person on the other end happens to have Acrobat or Reader 6 they can view the Acrobat 6 Files. And If they have 7 they can see the 6 and 7 files as well as anything below. However; most of the PC viewers I deal with still use Acrobat or Reader 5. Its these viewers I find that can't view the files. I've noticed also that when you do getinfo on a Acro/Reader, or 7 File created on my computer that in the thumbnail preview, all you see is the Acrobat A symbol, or a Blank thumbnail. Opening in 7 they can be viewed. Opening in 5 (I still have a OS9 Drive and e.5.0.5 installed) all I get is a Blank page no text and no Graphics if any in the content. SO every since 6 and 7 have come out I've had to save, then optimize for Acrobat 5 in order for my readers to see the pdf's.

  • Frame7.1 wont import Photoshop CS5.1 .jpg file

I am (reluctantly) in the process of migrating from Windows XP +
    Photoshop CS V8.0 to Windows 7/64bit + Photoshop CS5.1.
Framemaker 7.1 works well in both XP and W7/64, including generating
PDFs. I can import .jpg files written by Photoshop CS. Etc.
    ... except...
If I open a known-good (already imported) .jpg file using Photoshop
CS5.1 and, without making any changes, save it, Framemaker can no
longer import it, neither directly or by reference:
"The filter encountered an error and could not complete the
        translation".
It appears the Photoshop CS5.1 writes a different .jpg file format
than Photoshop CS (rhetorical: how can it be acceptable for CS5.1 to
change the format of a basic .jpg file? but I digress...).
Examining the original .jpg file vs. the CS5 .jpg file I find:
    - The new file is smaller (79KB vs. 82KB) - note both are small!
    - The contents (examined using a binary editor) are quite different.
    - Both versions display identically, in both CS and CS5.1 and in
       various viewers.
I have tried various experiments trying to understand this and have
had no luck. I can open the CS5 .jpg file in Photoshop CS and save it
again but Framemaker will not open this version either, same error.
This is not a RAM size issue (8GB), swap space issue, or anything else
related to the computer hardware. All SW updates are current, etc.
I have tried importing into a new, default template file, etc.
So, I tried saving as .bmp and the first time I tried to import it
Framemaker died immediately: no stack trace, no error messages, the
Frame process was just gone. After restarting, the 2nd attempt I got a
black rectangle of the correct size, but all black = not usable.
Photoshop CS + Framemaker has worked well for many years, so I know
    this is a CS5 issue.
Anyone have any ideas on how to make CS5.1 generate a "standard" .jpg
    file?
Anyone have any ideas on how to import CS5.1 images using
    Framemaker 7.1?
Please don't advocate upgrading Framemaker to V10... Adobe provides zero
information on migration (from any version) and the last time we did
this cost us many man-months of work to "fix" 14K+ pages in 50+
manuals. We will stay with XP/CS and "eat" the new W7/CS5 system
    before we move to FM10.
    Thanks

AG: IIRC, the FM7.1 JPG filter only reads the older JFIF header format JPG files, while the CS5 Photoshop and many other applications write EXIF headers in the JPG (yes , the standard evolved).
We also had a problem with JPEG 5 (legacy) vs. JPEG 2000 (newer) encoding, not in FM, but in the rendered PDFs at our print shop. The Xerox engine needed an update to fix that.
Using JPEGs in FM has various considerations, some already mentioned in this thread. But the biggest concern, in my view, is cascading compression damage. JPEG compression is always "lossy", and the artifacts at higher compression, or after successive compressions, are often visually distracting (and may be aggravated if sharpening is also applied). Even at NO compression, there are losses due to the transforms
Unless you are shooting .RAW, your camera is compressing from frame buffer to JPEG. When you re-save from your photo editor, regardless of edits, it gets re-compressed if saved to JPEG. When you render to PDF, it may get both down-samped and re-compressed again depending on PDF settings. If you post-process (optimize or reduce file size) in Acrobat, it can get down-sampled and re-compressed again.
So I shoot JPEG with as little compression as possible (RAW has other considerations). I edit in PhotoShop and save as EPS, which is a very inefficient format space-wise, but is UNcompressed*, and is a very efficient format both performance- and stability-wise in FM. I save the EPS at the resolution desired in the PDF (usually 200 dpi). Yes, it does get (and needs to be) re-compressed during Distill, but we've skipped one needless re-comp, and avoided another down-sample. We don't further optimize in Acrobat post because the images are already optimal.
EPS also supports both RGB and CMYK models, whereas JPEG is strictly RGB (or, beware: indexed color). And EPS is generally unmolested by Mr.Bill's GDI, which is crucial for color-managed CMYK.
    * TIFF can also be uncompressed, and CMYK, but can be a performance issue in FM.
The Wiki page for JPEG, btw, is presently vandalized:
"The name "JPEG" stands for Joint Photosaic Experts Group, the name of the committee that created the JPEG standard and also other standards. It was discovered by <likely name of vandal redacted> of the Philippines."

  • Placing from Photoshop to InDesign is changing colors of object

I can't find anywhere on the Internet, through about an hour of searching now why my vibrant sRGB objects I made in photoshop look so drab when I place them in an InDesign file.
I don't know if it's being changed from RGB to CMYK...I've tried a few different options from suggestions I found online that sounded like it might be the solution...but am still left with dead looking images.
This is an example of how it looks like in photoshop
And then what it looks like when I place it into an InDesign Document
So, I don't know what's going on or why the color has to be changed like this...but hopefully one of you gurus can tell me how to fix this!
The problem I have is that I created a brochure entirely in photoshop and I really don't like how the text gets pixelated when blown up or how it can't be selected if need be...so I'm recreating the brochure in InDesign...but this whole color change issue is really perturbing me!
Thanks in advance for the help!
Oh...and if there is a link somewhere out there that says how to make InDesign brochures so that the graphics show up sharp without taking up a ton of memory so the pdf's can be emailed...that would be awesome!

    tman69 wrote:
to reduce file size--try exporting as PDFX1a (preset)
In this case, that's probably NOT a good plan. PDF/X-1a converts everything to CMYK and only downsamples images above 450 ppi and then only to 300 ppi. It's meant for press. For email I personally would start with the [High Quailty Print] preset, then use the PDF optimizer in Acrobat Pro to flatten the transparency and downsample the images, to 150 ppi to start, but you may need to go further, and to throw out most of the extraeoous document info your readers don't need (basically check every box except the one to unembed fonts). I think the flattening in Acrobat is better than flattening in ID during export and most of the rest is only available in the PDF optimzer. If you don't have Acrobat Pro, try the Smallest File Size preset in ID.
Keep in mind that there is ALWAYS a tradeoff between file size and image quality. You are shooting for a middle ground.

  • Resizing multiple page PDF's

hi, hope I'm asking this i the right place... ! I'm creating a graphic design portfolio and i want to make it as easy as possible to view.
the 14 page pdf i have at the moment is too big to view onscreen, is there any way to resize the document, -or - is there a particular paper size that suits viewing onscreen?
    thanks in advance,
    ned .

I am not sure I completely understand your need: on screen viewing in most of the reasonable PDF viewing tools has as a default strategy to make the page fit inside the document window (you can increase the likelihood of this by adjusting the "Initial View" settings in the PDF, in Acrobat see File -> Document Properties -> Initial View).
Or are you rather not referring to page size, but to amount of data/file size? And not to onscreen viewing but online viewing over the internet? In that case, PDF Optimizer in Acrobat Professional might be your friend, it has numerous options to bring down file size.
