Optimization of the G5

I'd like my G5 to run as smoothly and efficiently as possible. Everyone has some different ideas on how to do this. I'd appreciate some suggestions on software, scripts, preferences, whatever to smooth the daily operations of this beast. I also heard that Norton Anti-Virus and Firewall really aren't built well for macs, that the programs tend to cause issues. Is this true? Do I really need them? Are there better programs?
Also, does anyone have a clue what the "update" (user ID: root) process does? Whenever it's turned on, it slows down my workflow because it "hi-jacks" the OS every ten seconds or so and creates a burst of disk activity, during which time nothing can be done. If I quit the process, everything's fine. But when I reboot the computer it's back. I want it gone permanently if it's not essestial.
Does apple have some sort of online tech class for macs? Or are there certain books? I'd like to learn the technology of these machines from the inside out, but nowhere near here offers those kinds of lessons.

Use SuperDuper to clone to a new drive that you have done a zero all on first. That brings back some performance.
Run Applejack to clear the caches regularly.
Run Disk Warrior 4.
Avoid 3rd party background scripts and utilities that monitor your system and drives, including Norton but also for checking drives and temperature.
What you see is a background process "update" owned by root that is general just in the background.
Next time you run Applejack, check for corrupt plists, too. Maybe you have other programs that hijack update. It should be there.
Do this: do a clean install of just Apple software. Then backup to a disk image. Then add essential programs. Make another backup. Avoid all the fancy gems to make your mac work differently. Clean, mean, slimmed down production runs better and is more stable.
There are half a dozen or more FAQs on maintenance and preventative maintenance. MacWorld and lots of people who frequent the forums to offer advice.

There is also Apple's new Mac 101 Help series. Some like "Missing Manual" or "Tiger Unleashed" and Ted Landau has his own book on troubleshooting, but the site has a wealth of tutorials worth the $25/yr as well as a PDF and CD of all their articles.

  • How can I optimize just the video on a project timeline?

    Hi everyone,
I've been working on a 1 hour documentary using original non-optimized media, now that I'm approaching the final steps of the edit I would like to optimize all the video in the timeline, but NOT all the footage I have in the events.
I did NOT optimized my media on import: all my events and project are made up of video non-converted, just imported. I did that because I didn't have enough storage to transcode to ProRes the whole 40 hours of footage.
The folders now full of media in Final Cut Events are the "original media" ones.
Now I'll add some title, subtitles and color-correction and I want to be a little more fast. Then I'll step in the "export" zone, and I know it is much better to export from optimized media than from original media, that's why I want a 'ProRes opimized media' project timeline.
Thank you in advance to anyone with advices!

    Thank you Tom,
at least I know there is no need I keep on wondering "WHY?"...
This impossibility to transcote footage on timeline seem to me a big downside to this new version... I just have in mind all the options for managing media in FCP 7...
    Thank you again,
always read your tips: veru useful!

I have a airport time capsule, an older airport extreme, and an older airport express.  I want to hard wire my Mac Mini to the network.  What is the best arrangement of the devices?  which ones should be hard wired to optimize extending the network?

I am using TM Unifi with an ASUS RT-N18U Wi-Fi router.  I would like to know could I use Apple AirPort Time Capsule to extend (repeater, booster) my Wi-Fi to a part of the house where the Wi-Fi signal is poor
Yes,, if you plan to connect the AirPort Time Capsule to the ASUS router using an Ethernet cable connection that will remain fixed and permanently installed at all times.
No, if you were planning to have the AirPort Time Capsule connect wirelessly and extend the Asus WiFi signal, since it would not be compatible with another manufacturer's router for that purpose.
Another way of saying the same thing here would be that if you want to extend the network wirelessly, it will take two Apple routers to do so

  • Is there a way to change the automatic optimization of the Thumbnail images in Webgallery?

Is there a way to change the automatic optimization of the Thumbnail images in webgallery found in Photoshop (CS3 or Photoshop elements-- I have both)?  The thumbnails come out so blurry that it's embarrassing (for an art site). Thanks.

Thanks for your response. Your websites look great!  You are to be complimented on your fine design work.
I've been doing custom sized thumbnails, at around 300px, but they are still a little blurry, like when JPEGs are over optimized and some isolated areas look like they are churning, one shape melting into another like boiling water.  Then, I tried even larger thumbnails, and then shrunk them to a smaller size using HTML commands, hoping  that shrinking them smaller would help tighten up the blurry churning areas. They looked a little better, but the churning areas remained.  When I open up the individual thumbnails in Photoshop and I try using the unsharp mask or the sharpen function, it gets even worse.

  • How can I optimize for the Web...at 96 dpi?

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Microsoft is the spawn of Satan. Here's the latest ridiculousness I'm trying to work around: Outlook considers 96 dpi to be the right and proper resolution for images. So it just goes about its merry way enlarging 72 dpi images and generally uglifying all of my e-mail templates. It's especially fun that it makes the enlargement every time the message is forwarded!
The workaround (discovered by my trust IT guy) is to save all images at 96 dpi. Outlook will be happy, and other e-mail platforms will actually read my code and render the images at the absolute size specified. Aye, here's the rub: When I create the images in Photoshop (CS3), I optimize using "Save for Web and Devices," which automatically sets the resolution at 72 dpi. If I save another way, or open and resave the optimized file, the file size increases dramatically.
Is there some other way to optimize at 96 dpi?
    Thanks!
    ~Valerie

It's been seen that some Microsoft software has taken turns for the worse since Bill Gates stopped directing technical activity, actually.  This seems to show that geeks mean well more rather often than business tycoons mean well.
    Please try this, Valerie:
    1.  In Photoshop, File - New, say 400 x 400 pixels at 96 pixels/inch.
    2.  Draw or paste something into that image (e.g., a screen grab) that will make it obvious if resizing has occurred.
    3.  File - Save As, a JPEG.
    4.  In Outlook, create a new message then Insert - Picture from File, the image you saved in step 3.
    Is it full-sized?
If so, a workaround for you would be to set up your image size in Photoshop to 96 ppi, then use File - Save As (instead of Save for Web & Devices).
You'll want to make sure you've sized your image and put it in the proper color space yourself, of course.

  • Optimization of the JVM memory - Garbage Collector

    Hi ,
Just a question about JVM memory management.
There is memory limitation of memory usage limitation (1.6M) in JVM.
Is there any possibility to use "Garbage collector" mechanism to optimize the memory usage?
Or any suggestions for the JVM memory optimization?
    Thanks a lot!!!

    nicolasmichael wrote:
    Hi,
the "memory limitation" does not have anything to do with garbage collection, but with the address space your operating system provides. On a 32bit operating system, your virtual address space is limited to <= 4 GB, depending on your operating system (for example 1.something GB on Windows and 3.something GB on Solaris). No.
Windows 32 bit has a 2 GB application space and can be configured to allow a 3GB space.
The Sun VM does not allow more because of the way that the executable is linked.

  • Resizing websites to optimize for the most common screen size

    Hi,
I have recently designed and produced my first website.  When designing it I looked at the pixel sizes of the range of screens in our office (no widescreen), and I have designed it to suit.  The website fits fine on our screens in our office, but when it has been viewed on some home PC's, it is too large to fit on the screen and you have to scroll across to view the entire website.  Is this because the home PC's screens are older and smaller pixel size?
My website is designed at 1160px width / 805px height.
    - Is there a way I can easily optimize the website to enable it to fit all screens?
    - If not, what would you suggest the best dimensions are to enable non-widescreen viewers to view it correctly.
    - My website is approx 60 pages, is there an easy way to make this change, with out re-designing the entire websites.
    Thanks
    Andy

I just had to do this for a site just recently, but in reverse, but admittedly, not 60 pages  :-)  It was originally designed for 800px wide browser window - so it was set at 760px width.
I had used a template (dwt) original, so it was only a matter of increasing the size of the various elements in my original png file (header, body bg image that repeated down the page and the footer).
Because I'd used a CSS layout, it was very easy to change.  Opened the DWT file, opened the css file and make the size adjustments to the various divs etc., and hey presto a larger size website  :-)
If you post a link to your page, so people can see how you've constructed it, may help get you some advice on how to make changes so it fits approx 960-980px for a 1024 window size.

  • After I create a form can I optimize (shrink the size) it?

After I create a form (using Adobe X Pro/Live Cycle) can I reduce size of the form before releasing it for general use? I know how to optimize a pdf I fill in... this is before that, while the form is being created... The form I created is just over 1 MG and our procurement system doesn't allow attachments that size (and the user base isn't that Adobe sophisticated to be able to optimize the form on their own).
    thanks
    Mark.

If you are using LiveCycle (Designer), you need will need to ask in the LiveCycle forum. However, for Designer forms you have a container of XML elements, not really the original PDF. So I do not think that any reduction can be done in Acrobat.

  • Big arrays + graphics : did memory optimization reach the limit?

    Hello all,
Please if you have time consider this program situation and please propose anything that might reduce ressources:
Program: application to analyse data from files
    input:
    12files (12 month = 1 year data) to 10 years.
about 30000 rows for 5 columns (4 double, 1 String)
    output:
graphs of data (4 graphs per dataset - 12 files). datasets can be graphed at the same time.
I store the data from files into 2D arrays in order to gain in memory usage. But still when I load more than 2 datasets it consumes 140 Mo from my 256 Mo, and 60% CPU speed (info from task manager, and I also check through Runtime). Yet I have to process the data and chart it, so I guess I already consume a lot of memory.
I already use threads and the option -Xmx256m.
I cannot divide data processing since I have to chart them into 1 year graph.
Please do you have any programmatic/logic solution for ressource optimization?
    Thank you very much
    Khalil

Please do you have any programmatic/logic solution for
ressource optimization? You could use float internally. That would reduce the 4 doubles to four floats (a float is only half a double). Do you really need all the Strings in memory at all times. I mean how many of them can you actually display on the screen at the same time. Also remember the screen resolution is limited to something like 1000 pixels. This means you probably don't need the full dataset in memory at all times because you can't show fractions of pixels anyway.

  • SNP Optimizer dropping the demand

    Hi,
While planning using SNP Optimizer against a given demand in a constraint scenario, the optimizer is dropping significant demand.
Capacity of the production factory is not constraint. But somehow a lot of demand is not propagated to the factory. In fact, out of the 3 factories where one product can be produced, one factory did not get any plan at all !!!
Can you please help me understand the other possible reasons why this can happen? The master data - Lanes and production master data at the factory is maintained correctly.
    Regards,
    Ankur

For a demand to be considered in the optimizer Run following are the checks to be done:
    1. Lane should be defined from a location where the demand is to a valid source. (lane can be at location level for all product or lane can be product specific)
    2. Cost definitions: If the production + transportation cost for the product at source is greater than the Demand loss cost at dest loc there wil be a demand loss. Please update the Demand Loss cost in /SAPAPO/MAT1:- SNP1 tab. Total demand loss cost after planning is avaialble in IT_NONDELV table in Optimizer Log
    3. Capacity avaialble for planning. resources to be properly defined and capacity availability to be checked (IT_RESOURCE) will give the details wether the reource is avaialble
    4. If a PPM is used with output componenet demand uinmet we need to check whether the input product is produced (capacity to be checked for input Product production to happen)
these are few basic checks for Demand Unmet

  • Safari optimization in the wake of this AT&T plan nightmare

I'm in a remote cabin and am stuck with EDGE so I've really noticed Safari's lack of caching. Anytime I open new tabs and then go back I have to wait for a re-render as all the data is downloaded again. It may not be as noticeable on 3G but the data still adds up especially for those that do lots of browsing. As far as I can tell Safari only holds maybe two or three tabs in cache, less if you hop over to another app. By contrast iCabMobile seems to do a MUCH better job as it seems to save an archive of each page. I'm not exactly certain how they it works but I can load up 7-8 tabs and the reload is nearly instant. If the guy (I think it's just one guy) doing iCab can do this I'd think Apple could.
I've got a little hope that Apple might fight to keep their "deal" with AT&T and think they should, especially for iPad users. I don't know what Apple can do or if they'll make the effort to defend the iPad unlimited data but regardless, I hope they'll do something to inprove the Safari user experience. Saving data bandwidth is all the more important if we end up being stuck with these new caps. I'd encourage folks to give Apple some feedback on this.

I have been using the "atomic browser" for more than a month now. It not only uses real tabs, but allows background loading of tabs, and the ability to turn off images so that you just get text and the pages load alot faster as well as saving bandwidth. I still had more than 20Mb left last month on a 250 plan.

  • Saving files. Optimization of the process of saving, easy usability.

Yet to make this decision trained and intelligent. Whatever system is determined in what formats the user saves more often and put them on the button.
If it's really convenient, let's give this joint effort the company Adobe.
Guys, what do you think of my solution?

I have to admit, it is an area of the product that does take some time even for experts to navigate.  Whenever I save PNG files, it seems I'm forever pressing the P key over and over to get it to cycle to PNG.
The use of buttons may be the wrong approach, though.  Maybe a Radio Button list, which would imply "pick only one of this list".
Or maybe there could be a configuration that would cause the ones you most use to bubble to the top.
Another possible viable approach is to become sensitive to the extension that's typed.  An application that actually already does this is IrfanView.  If you type "ScreenGrab.png", at the moment you type the 'g' in .png it switches the type to PNG.
But (Adobe, pay attention here) - WHATEVER method is chosen, care should be taken to try not to break the key/mouse sequences people already use, because after so many years, we've come to the habit of doing things a certain way, and a change that breaks that can be very jarring.

  • Performance Optimization during the Data Archiving Initial runs

    Dear Experts,
We are running archiving jobs (Write Job & Preprocessing Jobs) which are running for nearly 56hrs. It is writting and analyzing nearly 4 million records.
Any suggestions to improve the performance for running these jobs to complete in less time. Its ISU Archiving.
I have gone through Many SAP Notes, but i'm unable to find related to improving performance during the archival runs. These are initial runs.
    Thank You,

You should check the sql statements that are being executed by these runs.. Possibly by adding additional indexes you can speedup the process.
    Kind regards,

  • QTdemo reel: Optimize for the web

I have a demo reel of 4 minutes. I have quicktime 6.5 Pro. What can I do to get this file small enough so that it can be attached to emails (maybe 5 mb)? Naturally, I'd expect the quality to be diminished and the size of the image to be pretty small.
    Thanks
    Bart

You can greatly reduce the size of a video to email by importing it into Movie Maker. However the last time I did it, Movie Maker would not import a .mov. I had to first convert it to a .avi with QT pro to import it into Movie Maker. And then it becomes a .wmv.
If you scroll down to the post in this link by Allen Richard it decribes how it is done.
    http://forum.powweb.com/showthread.php?t=22881
I'm not sure how to reduce it in QT pro, and keep it as a .mov, if that is what you are trying to do.

When I try to optimize a volume on a server running Windows Server 2012 (R1). I receive the below error. This volume is an ISCSI target to our Compellent SAN. Other Servers don't have an issue with volumes created on the same SAN and I have already ran ChkDsk

I did stumble upon that article as well and working through it didn't help. This is an Exchange 2013 server but I wouldn't think that that would exclusively cause a problem like this (unless there is something under the hood that Exchange 2013 is secretly

T drive is for the Logs.  The C drive is "directly" connected and the M and T drives are on the same SAN (different LUNs) via iSCSI. This is running as a virtual guest on VMWare ESXi v5.5.  I have other servers setup the
