Optimizing 1.8 GHz PPC after install of OS 10.5.8
Have 1.8 GHz Power PC G5 and installed OS 10.5.8 to enable iPad wireless function in home application. iPad working great; we love it. But PPC performance, especially web functions and occasionally iTunes, are "balky," slow or just freezing. Is there any App or program I can run that will optimize this machine for this configuration? Tricks? Tweaks? Should I be trying to partition certain data sets (iTunes, e-mail, photos) away from other processes (not that I have the foggiest idea how I would do this, it just sounds like it could be helpful).
Just so you understand, we have never been much more involved in system healthcare than "better try restarting it, honey," "ok, then turn it off," "well, I don't know, just unplug the **** thing," or running an occasional disk repair utility before treking to the Genius Bar with this brick in tow. Just thought I'd ask this time in case there is an obvious solution.
Many thanks for any guidance.
Scott
[And for you education folks out there, my measurable outcome is to reduce the frequency of spinning pinwheels (like the one I was just looking at) and heavy sighs from daughters.]
"If we switch browsers as suggested, then do we also need to take steps to remove Adobe Flash?"
No if you choose TenFourFox as it does not enable plug-ins by default, even if Adobe Flash would be installed it does not use it.
"What functions does Flash support we might be most likely to miss, or are they all replaced by the alternate you suggest?"
Flash is the most common format of video on websites so videos will not play without it (YouTube being an exception because of software like YouView). Flash is also used to create another types of multimedia content for webpages, such as games and for those I don't think that there is alternatives. Ads are the most common complaint since combined with Flash being heavy on PPC many webpages include Flash-based ads. Software like Adblock Plus can be used to eliminate most of them and to improve browsing speed. Adblock plus does not completedly disable Flash so you can have it installed and still watch internet videos.

Update_prebinding issues after installing security-update2009-001-ppc
Hi there,
after installing all required software updates including secupd2009-001ppc and installing safari4beta, safari would no longer start up. It just bounced once in the dock and then crashed. After uninstalling safari4beta using the safari4beta uninstaller which is to restore safari3.2.1 and rebooting, still safari won't startup. So I deleted the app and reinstalled it from the appropriate installer. Now at least this works again.
But upon booting (in verbose mode) I get the message that update_prebinding fails due to too many errors. When I try to do update_prebinding manually on the terminal I get the following error messages:
"$ sudo update_prebinding -root -force -debug
dyld: warning DYLDROOTPATH not used because it contains a non-absolute path
dyld: image not prebound, so could not use prebinding in /usr/bin/updateprebindingcore
update_prebinding: warning: could not load /usr/bin/updateprebindingcore: no suitable image found. Did find:
/usr/bin/updateprebindingcore: not a dylib
dyld: image slid, so could not use prebinding in /System/Library/Frameworks/Accelerate.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/vImage.fr amework/Versions/A/vImage
update_prebinding: warning: could not link /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Application Services: dylib not prebound: /usr/lib/libxml2.2.dylib
update_prebinding: too many errors (101)
update_prebinding: error: terminating"
The error message is much longer, but I hope this short version will do for analysis.
How can this be fixed? I read that some people encountered the same problem with secupd2008-006 and that Apple promised to fix it. But this was back in October last year.
I also wonder whether this is an issue with the secupdates or with Safari proper.
Thanks in advance for your help. It's still broken in my system also. I just got the following in Terminal:
$ sudo update_prebinding -force -root /
Password:
update_prebinding: too many errors (101)
update_prebinding: error: terminating
In addition, the explanatory [support page for Tinker Tool System|http://www.bresink.de/osx/193281/issues.html] that I listed earlier hasn't been changed.
I had a feeling this was the case, because when an Apple software update displays "Optimizing System Performance" at the end of an installation, it is actually updating prebinding. This step used to take a few minutes in my system, which is normal, but for the last few months it has been lasting only a few seconds, probably because it has been terminating prematurely with this error. -
I have a MacBook Pro Retina (2,3 GHz Intel Core i7 - 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 - Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB). I use KompoZer for my website, but after installing OS X Yosemite it doesn't work right (I cannot see images in the website).
It's beta open source software so I'm not surprised. It does't look to be too active a project, so I don't know if it will help or not but you might be maybe better off posting a bug report on their Sourceforge page here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/kompozer/

I'm running yosemite on a mini (late 2012) 2.3 GHz i7 with 16 GB, my problem is that after installing Java that I need in order to run FileMaker Server 12, apps like Safari, Mail or even App Store, stop working properly, the mayor problem is that NO images load and Safari start saying that the pages are not loading because the connection with the server stop working. The only way to fix it is to re-start the computer.

Stuck at Optimizing System Performance after installing Security Patch
24" iMac seems to be stuck at "Optimizing System Performance" after installing the latest Security Update. Software Update won't quit. Nervous to force the computer to shutdown during that process. It's working fine at the moment other than that the Software Update box won't go away.
What do you think?Well kind of answered my own question. Tried to run Activity Monitor which only started halfway and then crashed. I remembered the whole computer is backed up to an external drive everyday so I figured if it won't start at least I can start up from the external drive.
Forced the shutdown by holding the power button. Started up w/o a hiccup; ran Repair Permissions which checked out and the Verify the Disk with First Aid which also checked out fine.
So I guess it's ok though I may unplug that external for a day or two. -
3 flashing lights after installing newest OSX on old Dual 1.8 PPC G5
Hi all,
My computer was working fine up until I installed OSX Leopard. Not long after installing it my computer froze while using Safari. I then got the 3 flashing lights. I've since had all 4GB RAM replaced through RamJet on a lifetime warranty. I got the same problems with the new RAM. I know it's probably the logic board at this point but I'm just wondering if any of you who had the same problem after installing Leopard before getting 3 flashing lights.Anybody?

Windows 8.1 Pro will not boot after installing iTunes 11.1.5.5
It's a little hard for me to accept that this is true, but the symptoms seem to be pointing the direction of the title of this thread. I have an all-in-one touch-screen Gateway computer that came with windows 7 (yeah, a win7 machine that came with touch, yeesh) and I put windows 8.1 pro 64-bit on it with a clean install (actually windows 8 was the clean install and then I did the free microsoft store upgrade to 8.1). It has 4GB of RAM and has a Pentium Dual Core cpu @ 2.2 Ghz. It was running fine with the previous version of iTunes, but as soon as I updated to iTunes 11.1.5.5 (and there may have been other apple things that updated too (ie quicktime of course), the computer prompted me for a reboot and froze during the reboot process (before it even shut down). Then it had trouble booting into windows. I ran startup repair to no avail and decided to do a sytem restore. My most recent restore point was from a few weeks back, before iTunes was even installed at all on the machine. I went back to that point and the machine worked fine again. Then I installed iTunes 11.1.5.5 and the same exact problem occurred - it froze while shutting down after the iTunes install and then would not boot into windows 8. I did another system restore and have not put iTunes back on. The system is working fine. I'm going to try to find out if there's a way to download older versions of iTunes, so that I can install it, but the bigger issue here is: Is this a legitimate bug/incompatibility with some hardware or software or driver that I have on this computer? I run a computer support business so I know my way around but I don't have time to troubleshoot this from scratch. Anyone else seeing this? Apple employees...a little help here? Any input?
let it sit for about 30 min and still got nothing
I then did a "hard shutdown(just pressed power button till it turned off the computer)"
That may not have been long enough. But a "hard shutdown" would definitely have been construed as a problem due to the update.
Asus apparently is a known problem case...

Hello all, I could use some serious help on some major issues I have been having after installing Mavericks on my system (specs stated below). Never has a mac felt ever so rebelious and broken before in my lifelong period of using these systems. Anyway, after installing system 10.9, I had opened the mac App Store upon seeing that applications such as my iWork suite all had free updates. However, when I would attempt to navigate to the updates window, it would not respond to my various attempts. I then tried to get there by the system's menu bar and to my dismay, nothing would work when I clicked on it, not even the apple logo menu. I later quit the application using Command-Q and opened up the App Store by the apple menu option 'Software Update...' instead. Though it looked promising since the updates window did open, all update buttons or even '...more' info buttons were unresponsive. These same problems persisted even after restarting my computer. I had also attempted to see if repairing definitions would help by booting from the recovery start-disk and using disk utility but the repairs it carried out apparently had nothing to do with my issue. Finally, I was able to update to the new iWorks suite (which interestingly did not replace the iWorks '09 suite) by following the notification that asked about allowing automatic updates which I did.
Once trying to use Pages 5.0, I soon noticed that all I could do was merely type in a new document and change various options via key commands. Neither the inspector or top bar menus would respond to any place I click. Similarly, Evernote only starts up on the last used note and merely allows me to scroll through it. The top bar menus, the note select pane, and even clicking inside the note to input text are all not functioning and uninfluenced by any mouse clicks.
I have noticed other apps that will not respond to any sort of input, but I still have not explored all applications to know what the issues of each may be. However there are some applications that work such as Safari, Google Chrome, dolphin, iWork '09 including Pages '09, and others.
I do hope that I can avoid rolling back my system, but in the meantime, it has been quite the obticle course to use my computer for all of my school purposes.
Any help is very much appreciated,
Thank you!

As an additional note I went 156 days without a panic prior to the most recent panics.
You shouldn't have them at all. I don't see anything in the 2 panic reports implicating Safari?
Disconnect all peripherals, only Apple keyboard and mouse and test. Often connected peripherals cause kernel panics. See isolating issues in Mac OS X. for troubleshooting steps.
EDIT: Run your Repair Disk from your install disk.

... With the latest software updates for OS X, I've read that anti-virus software is largely superfluous for Mac. Any opinions to the contrary/negative experiences?
Almost. Anti-virus software is completely superfluous for Mac.
I have tested most of the commonly available Mac "anti-virus" products under controlled conditions. The only differences between them are their varying degree of worthlessness. Some are malicious and will corrupt your Mac. The vast majority of Mac problems reported on this site are the direct result of using such products.
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind. -

0 B Page-outsI have the same problem. After installing OSX 10.9.3. my Macbook freezes more than 7 times. The problem came up after switching via Thunderbold to a second screen or after "waking" the macbook up. The last time osx didn't boot anymore. It freezes after the "Apple Logo" came up. (grey screen).
After booting the system with "cmd+V" OSX started again. Now I'm afraid to shut down the system and the macbook runs all day.
I hope someone can help me, here my perticulars:

Error message after installing 10.8.2 update
After installing the osx 10.8.2 update the mok resrtarts and give a error message: "the update could no be installed" or so. As I look up in the system info the update appears al isnatlled. Why?
I'm another user with same issue, started right after the upgrade, appears consistently with login/out, sleep/wake, rarely otherwise.
? some launchd process calling usereventagent which then crashes

This is on a 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Xeon. No similar issue with my Air which I also upgraded to 10.8.2, so I suspect it's a launchd process installed by something which I and others have added that gets run at login and logout (and less frequently at other times).
