Optimizing iChat

I had iChat working really well under Leopard 10.5.8 - perfectly, in fact. I hadn't used iChat since upgrading to a new iMac and Snow Leopard 10.6.3 until yesterday and I noticed that the incoming video was really breaking up and pixelated - very jumpy and jerky (the person I was chatting with had no such problem on their end - I was coming in perfectly for them). I have my iChat version 5.0.3 bandwidth limit set to 500 and previously had streaming set to 1.5 in QuickTime settings but there are no QT settings in Mac OS X 10.6.3. Any idea what may be causing this? I've read that some people recommend setting the bandwidth limit to 200 but that's where I get confused. Shouldn't a higher bandwidth work better - or perhaps, automatic?

Hi Gerard,
Yes, the lack of the Quicktime Setting can cause some people issues.
Since iChat 2 iChat read the Quicktime Streaming speed.
However it could not read the Automatic setting as an open setting. It interpreted it as a figure which was sometimes written to the com.apple.ichat.plist as a zero.
In iChat 4 this was set to be read as 384kbps which meant in theory anyone could host a 4 way Video chat.
In OS 10.3.x and 10.4.x (for iChat 2 and 3) the Streaming Intranet/LAN setting also returned an unreadable figure to iChat and so the 1.5Mbps T1/Intranet/LAN setting became the de facto setting to use.
This made sure iChat could use as much of your Internet speed as it could see.
During this time most cable and DSL connection speeds have seen a leap from about 128kbps Upload speeds to an average of closer to a 1Mbps uploads with downloads being much faster as well.
This in turn meant that although the 1.5Mbps may have exceeded your Upload Speed it also capped everyone to a similar speed if they were faster than that.
iChat 5 can see your whole Internet Connection speed (Upload being the limiting factor)
This means that between two buddies at any one time you may have a much greater speed difference.
ichat is supposed to negotiate between the two Buddies on a common speed and the Buffering in iChat is supposed to take care of the variances in that speed.
The issue with that is that a 5% difference in a 20Mbps service is vastly greater than anything iChat was trying to buffer before, hence blocky Video, Audio Drop outs and strange pixelisation.
The only way to control this now is to limit iChat in the Bandwidth setting as you have read.
It is best done on both ends to aim to be as close as possible.
We are currently recommending using the 500kbps as the first choice and if you still have problems try 200kbps.
AS the other poster has said it pays to check with several Buddies so that you get the "best for all your Buddies" setting that you can (with the occasional tweak for some "Special Cases").
Summary.
The previous methods of setting up iChat kept the Bandwidth (portion of Internet speed) to a closer average for everyone.
In iChat 5 to enable the Buffering to cope with speed Variances, use the Bandwidth Limit setting, starting with 500kbps.

    What experience have people had with a number of participants on an iChat video conference. What's an optimal number? What is the maximum number (if the bandwidth supports it)?

  • New stream, low upload rate... Optimal Settings for streaming games?

    I've been fiddling around with FMLE for the past few days/weeks and trying to find the best quality to stream quality games such as Bad Comapny 2, Starcraft 2, Mass Effect 2, etc
    I am able to play games at max settings, but when I do the stream will lag so I choose to make the settings low enough so I can stream.
    The only probably right now is they seem quite blurry/pixelated - which is probably due to my upload rate of 0.8mbps from SpeedTest.net1
    My specs are:
    Resolution of 1680x1050 (Most of my games like Bad Company 2 are played at 1280x720 windowed mode)
    i5-2500K
    GTX 560 Ti
    12GB Ram
    1TB Hard Disk Space
    Windows 7 64bit
    Upload rate of 0.8mbps (and 5.0mbps download incase it is needed)
    http://www.justin.tv/mrshotzzzz/videos - Bad Company 2 at the moment... There seems to be a LOT of blurryness, but it seems quite smooth.
    http://www.twitch.tv/mrshotzzzz/b/293073526?id=293073526&channel=mrshotzzzz - This is my latest... (skip to 1:25 where I configure it to be good)
    When I fullscreen it, around the edges mainly, I see it is pixleted.
    I use 1280x720 input, and 640x360 output with 800kbps. Is it possible to make it better?
    Would an output of 640x360 with a bitrate of 650kbps be better?
    Would an output of 854x480 be better?
    Could changing my input size to 1920x1080 make my quality better?
    tl;dr What is the optimal settings for a good specced computer, but with a low upload rate (0.8mbps)?

    Hi,
    In iChat 3 or iChat 4 setting System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming to 1.5Mbps is quite important.
    In Tiger (10.4.x) the Automatic Setting here is read as Zero by iChat and can cause issues even when the Speed is high enough.
    In Leopard for iChat 4 this Automatic setting is read as 384k by iChat (although this is the Minimum for a 4 way Video chat it may still cap your Internet Speed).
    If you have to change this iChat will need a restart if open.
    The real controlling factor is the Upload speed the Internet Connection speed has.
    There is one other place to help with the Bandwidth/Internet Connection speed.
    This is in iChat menu > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Limit drop down.
    This can be changed during A/V chat and changes to the Bit rate iChat is using is shown in the Connection Doctor (Video Menu).
    This is best used when Really Fast Buddies (Processors and Internet Speeds) can tend to "Over-run" lesser speeded Buddies. It can also help if your ISP manages the Bandwidth/Internet Connection speed making it run slower or faster at different times of the day (Also look at Fair Usage Policies).
    There is no independent way to reduce the Frame rate that would have a direct effect on this.
    There are other apps that do use less demanding picture quality that in turn effects the Frame rate which can effect the Bandwidth needed/Used
    See this link http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/page5.html#_other
    Scroll to numbers 5 through 8 for Apps, 9 through 12 for Web Browser options.
    13 is a PC app.
    14 & 15 works in Video only to MSN Buddies.
    The list does not have a reference to the Yahoo Beta 3 for Mac

  • Many iChat Problems

    I am trying to screen share with a friend, so I can help him trouble shoot some things. We went on iChat, and i invited him. We got error 22 I believe. I told him to go on sharing, then screen sharing, and allow it, and give me his information about it. He had vnc://Macintosh . I realize that this is not a valid adress, so I told him to go on terminal, and type ipconfig . I recieved his IP, but when doing command k, and trying to connect, it did not work. I asked him to go on Network Utility, and do a port scan.
    All that he had open were:
    Open TCP Port: 88 kerberos
    Open TCP Port: 548 afpovertcp
    Open TCP Port: 5900 vnc-server
    Since I had:
    Open TCP Port: 22 ssh
    Open TCP Port: 80 http
    Open TCP Port: 88 kerberos
    Open TCP Port: 139 netbios-ssn
    Open TCP Port: 311 asip-webadmin
    Open TCP Port: 445 microsoft-ds
    Open TCP Port: 515 printer
    Open TCP Port: 548 afpovertcp
    Open TCP Port: 631 ipp
    Open TCP Port: 3031 eppc
    Open TCP Port: 3689 daap
    Open TCP Port: 4111 xgrid
    Open TCP Port: 5900 vnc-server
    I knew something was wrong. I tried connecting with different AIM accounts for iChat screen share, I changed quicktime settings for optimal bandwidth, I unblocked all ports, and made sure he had too. I connected through afp, vnc, and his IP adress. It has never worked. He has been able to chat before, and so have I. We have updated our systems to 10.5.6, all software updates. He gets 1 MB per second, and I get 3 MB per second. Any help would be appreciated.

    I'm having many problems as well...here is my error code..what can I do to fix it?

  • 2TB Time Capsule Setup/Optimizing etc...

    I just picked up the 2TB and I have a few questions about it.
    I also just recently talked to a buddy of mine that has the 500 or 1TB version of the TC, but it seems that the setup/options are a little different.
    For example I would like to just use the TC as N only on the 5Ghz band, but it doesn't allow for me to do that. I can check a box for the 5Ghz but it doesn't specify to use the N band only.
    The "transmit rate" is different as well. Now, I can only select low, med or high instead of 6mb, 10mb etc. What is the transmit rate and what can I do to optimize the TC for optimal performance?
    I wish I could screen share with someone so I can figure this out. If you want to I'm [email protected] on ichat. Someone please help! Thank you!

    Hi William,
    Thanks for the response. I did see the 802.11n only (5GHz) - 802.11b/g/n. At first that didn't appear in the drop-down menu. I had to use the Option+click method to pull up the extra options.
    Yes, the 5GHz check box is in Wireless Options. After speaking with a friend of mine who has an earlier version of the TC (500GB I think) he said he didn't have the same options as I have. NOW, I have the 5GHz box checked, but I have to go into the AirPort menu in the upper right-hand corner and select the 5GHz band instead of the 2.4GHz band. There's not way to set up a separate password for the different bands. I just want to use the MBP on the 5GHz band N only.
    You're right I messed up - it is called "multicast rate". I just have that set to high.
    It's bizarre because I get a longer latency rate and usually slower throughput rates as well as compared to my d-link 655 router. I suppose I could use the d-link router as an a/b/g router, but then I can't use N only on the TC. Just odd that Apple got rid of that option to use N only. Maybe I'm just screwing this whole thing up so if you have any ideas please do share! Thanks!
    Geoff

  • Ensuring maximum bandwidth for iChat connection

    I want to use ichat for a corporate event linking two locations. I can get a 5mb/s adsl line not behind a firewall at both locations, or I could use the corporate connection of which I don't know much other than there is/are firewall(s).
    In short I want to use the maximum bandwidth to ensure the best quality sound and image. How can I do this? What kind of connection do I need and what do I do to iChat so that it works optimally?
    Thanks for any help you can provide
    Cheers

    Hi,
    It does depend on several factors.
    Processor
    Bandwidth (How much the connection you have is being shared at different times by other computers/apps)
    And of course the Internet Speed itself both Upstream and down.
    There are settings within the OS and in iChat that can help get the most out of any connection.
    Lighting and a good camera are a given.
    Not doing things like a download at the same time will give you a better performance.
    First set System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming to 1.5Mbps and restart iChat if Open.
    In iChat Menu > Preferences > Audio/Video Section the Bandwidth setting here is Best at NONE.
    However some ISPs practice Bandwidth stream Management to combat Peer-to-Peer File Sharing and iChat can suffer as a consequence and you should try 500kbps as well.

    hallo @all,

    OK... So the Apple Care support call was not that productive. They were very nice, however, they basically had no idea what I was talking about. I was generally asking about the difference in LUN handling from 10.6 to 10.7 and they gave me the canned response of "you are not using Apple Hardware so we can't really help you, we are really sorry...." This was after being transferred to the "Enterprise Storage Group" or something like that.
    So in my travels I found a tech note from another apple list which basically explains what happened between 10.6 and 10.7.
    I'm not "that hardcore" but some of you guys will really get what is going on here. I'm a bit of an IT neanderthal but what has changed as some here have pointed to is that in 10.7 the OS does its own FC multipathing.
    Here is what Manjo Radhakrishnan from Apple said...
    "10.7 does its own FC multipathing. This has changed from 10.6 which did target based multipathing ( based on WWNN ). On 10.7 this has changed to lun based multipathing ( based on the unique lun identifier in the device identification VPD page ).
    If the target supports ALUA ( Asymmetric logical unit access ), the host will do IOs only to the target ports configured as "Active-Optimized" for a particular lun. If there is no ALUA support, all paths to a particular lun will be considered active-optimized and IOs will be done across all the paths.
    Ideally if the target does not support ALUA, you should configure the luns such that a lun is visible only across the ports of one of the target controllers ( lun affinity ) to prevent lun thrashing."
    So here is the link to the thread...
    http://lists.apple.com/archives/ata-scsi-dev/2011/Jul/msg00001.html
    If someone can translate this from smart-guy into dummy-end-user and tell me how to fix my infortrend boxes under 10.7 I'll buy you a bottle of really nice tequila (or several cases of yoohoo).
    thanks!

  • Guide: Optimizing Your Windows XP/Vista Notebook

    purpose:
    to build a highly optimized, personalized, faster, smaller and more secure OS installation using windows xp (can use vista also but this guide will not cover it in any detail)
    plus i was bored to tears
    information:
    this is a somewhat advanced guide not meant for those unfamilure with the tools and techniques used here
    the basics of this guide can be applied to most/all windows xp/vista notebooks and desktops, not just Lenovo, however in my case i run windows xp pro on a T60 (8743) with an add-on graphics card (similar to a T60p i assume) and this guide will be geared toward this config.
    many alterations can be made, so it is very general in nature and should not be taken literally
    this is my personal machine and i am not on a private network. you may have to adjust as necessary.
    disclaimer:
    it ain't my fault
    what will you gain:
    * a highly customized OS
    * faster boot times
    * more free disk space
    * a lighter, snappier feeling OS
    * a more secure OS
    * a more stable OS
    * more free RAM
    * less problems (or maybe more if you're not careful)
    with all due respect to Lenovo, i have found that the less Lenovo software i install the fewer glitches i have and the faster things run. this is often the case for various other hardware vendors that supply proprietary software which is often not needed, or not all of which is needed.
    what you will need: (all free, except for possibly the OS):
    * a windows xp/vista installation disk. though you may be able to do this using your i386 directory (perhaps on the recovery partition), a full, non-OEM disk is preferred.
    * SP2 and SP3 (it is my understanding that either SP1 or SP2 should be installed before installing SP3, though i have built installations with SP3 only).
    * dotNet runtime
    * nLite (or vLite for vista) - http://www.nliteos.com/
    * Ryan's Windows XP Post-SP3 Update Pack - http://www.ryanvm.net/msfn/
    * Ryan's integration tool - http://integrator.siginetsoftware.com/index.php?download
    * all current drivers for your hardware
    please read any license agreements for the above (for instance, nLite is not to be used for commercial applications)
    also visit the nLite and RyanVM forums as there's a ton of helpful info there, add-on packs, etc., and please consider donating to them both if you like the software. both are great guys. i wouldn't bother running windows anymore without nLite. from Nuhi's page (his english is not the best):
    Have you ever wanted to remove Windows components like Media Player, Internet Explorer, Outlook Express, MSN Explorer, Messenger...
    How about not even to install them with Windows ?
    nLite is a tool for pre-installation Windows configuration and component removal at your choice. Optional bootable image ready for burning on media or testing in virtual machines.
    With nLite you will be able to have Windows installation which on install does not include, or even contain on media, the unwanted components.
    Features
    * Service Pack Integration
    * Component Removal
    * Unattended Setup
    * Driver Integration *
    * Hotfixes Integration **
    * Tweaks
    * Services Configuration
    * Patches ***
    * Bootable ISO creation
    basic build procedure:
    * install the dotNet runtime
    * install nLite (or vLite for vista)
    * create a directory structure something like:
    c:\nlite\source\
    c:\nlite\working\
    c:\nlite\sp\
    c:\nlite\hotfix\
    * download Ryan's post SP3 update pack and dump it in c:\nlite\hotfix\
    * download Ryan's integration tool and dump in c:\nlite\hotfix\
    note that you can use nLite to integrate service packs and hotfix's, but i prefer Ryan's tool as i have had problems in the past using nLite to integrate Ryan's post SP update cabs, though this happened during the earlier beta days of nLite.
    * download xp SP2 and SP3 service packs and dump in c:\nlite\sp\
    * copy contents of windows installation disk to c:\nlite\source\
    * using Ryan's integrator, set update pack path to c:\nlite\sp\WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe, windows source to c:\nlite\source\, and destination to c:\nlite\working\ and start integration
    * using Ryan's integrator, set update pack path to c:\nlite\sp\WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe set windows source to c:\nlite\working\ and destination to c:\nlite\working\ and integrate SP3. after SP3 is integrated, if you want to save the windows installation for the next time you install, copy it elsewhere before moving on.
    *  using Ryan's integrator set source to c:\nlite\hotfix\ (where you dumped Ryan's post SP3 update cab) and destination to c:\nlite\working\ and run it.
    * start nLite and set the windows installation path to c:\nlite\working\
    make sure that, in the "version" box, that SP3 is written, otherwise you've made an error earlier.
    IMPORTANT: when using nLite be very careful and move slowly, making sure to READ ALL DESCRIPTIONS and explore all options -- it's easy to skip or screw up something if you're not very careful.
    rule of thumb: don't remove something if you don't know what it is or what the implications might be
    * following the wizard, select your options. i would suggest the following:
    remove components
    unattended
    options
    patches
    tweaks
    build ISO
    in the case of my thinkpad my hard drive will not be recognized by windows unless i integrate the driver for the SATA controller using nLite OR enter BIOS setup and put the controller in compatibility mode so i can install the driver from windows (after which BIOS needs to be changed again).  integrating drivers will require extra reading on your part and is beyond what i wish to get into here, so, to make things easy if you're not comfortable doing this, just put your controller in compatibility mode if necessary and install the driver from within windows.
    * following the wizard and hitting "next" as necessary, if you've selected the options above, nLite will pop-up a compatibility options window where you want to select what components you really need (prevents you from removing dependancies later).
    * in the next step you'll remove unwanted components - the part i enjoy most.  be careful what you remove! stuff in red is important. this is what i typically remove, give or take:
    Accessibility Options
    Briefcase
    ClipBook Viewer
    Defragmenter (replaced with JKDefragGUI)
    Games
    Internet Games
    Paint
    Pinball
    Screensavers (useful only for very old CRT monitors)
    WordPad (replaced with PSPad)
    Keyboards (i remove all - nLite will keep default for your language)
    ActiveX for streaming video (depends on IE which i remove parts of)
    AOL ART Image Format Support (depends on IE which i remove parts of)
    Images and Backgrounds (desktop eye candy)
    Luna desktop theme (cartoonish desktop theme)
    Media Center
    Mouse Cursors
    Movie Maker
    Music Samples
    Old CDPlayer and Sound Recorder (replaced in part by foobar2000)
    Speech Support
    Tablet PC
    Windows Media Player (replaced by foobar2000, VLC and Satsuki codec pack)
    Windows Media Player 6.4 (replaced by foobar2000, VLC and Satsuki codec pack)
    Windows Picture and Fax Viewer (replaced by XnView)
    Windows Sounds (unneeded sound themes)
    Communication tools (phone dialer, hyperterminal, etc., some replaed by better 3rd part s/w)
    FrontPage Extensions
    Internet Connection Wizard (not needed to create a connection)
    Internet Explorer (i keep the core (there's 2 options for removing this; one to remove parts but keep basic functionality and another to remove the core, which i suggest keeping) as it's functionality is needed by many applications - removing this will remove the "Program Files\Internet Explorer" directory, but you can still browse the web using windows explorer (file manager) if need be. i replace with Firefox)
    Internet Information Services (IIS) (i use Apache (WAMP) for web development)
    IP Conferencing
    MSN Explorer (partially replaced with Miranda IM)
    Netmeeting
    Outlook Express (replaced with Thunderbird)
    Peer-to-Peer (only for MS networks, nothing to do with P2P)
    Share Creation Wizard
    Synchronization Manager
    Vector Graphics Rendering (VML) (depends on IE i think, which i remove parts of)
    Web Folders
    Windows Messenger (replaced with Miranda IM
    .NET Framework (i don't install this at all)
    Blaster/Nachi removal tool
    Color Schemes (predefined desktop color schemes)
    Desktop Cleanup Wizard (replaced with CCleaner)
    Disk Cleanup (replaced with CCleaner)
    File and Settings Wizard (used to transfer settings between 2 computers)
    File System Encryption (try TrueCrypt or AxCrypt - note that MS encryption is propritary and, as such, should not be trusted)
    Help and Support (huge space hog)
    IExpress Wizard
    Manual Install and Upgrade (ability to upgrade OS, which is always a bad idea (better to install clean))
    MS Agent (used for annoying animated paperclip in MS office)
    Out of Box Experience (OOBE) (do NOT remove unless you have a VLK)
    Remote Installation Services (RIS)
    Search Assistant (annoying animated dog in search window)
    Security Center (replaced with Comodo firewall)
    Service Pack Messages
    Shell Media Handler
    Tour (useless windows tour)
    User account pictures
    Web View
    Zip Folders (replaced with IZArc and Universal Extractor)
    Automatic Updates (hardly needed once attack vectors are removed)
    Beep Driver (annoying beep, such as when you press too many keys at once)
    Error Reporting (automitic error reporting to MS - i suppose vista is the result?)
    IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service (replaced with ImgBurn)
    Remote Registry
    Secondary Logon
    System Restore Service (bloated nonsense used for restoring viruses to their orgional state - better to reinstall)
    Languages (i remove all - nLite will keep your default language)
    as should be apparent from the above, security is already enhanced since many attack vectors were removed (OE, WMP, MSN, remote registry, system restore, etc., etc., etc.).
    missing functionality is replaced by better, more functinal and more secure software
    * for the "unattended setup" step, you can select many options, change default paths (Program Files), disable hibernate, configure network adapters and much more.
    * next is "options" where you are presented with many more choices.
    * next is "patches". here i would highly suggest turning off SFC (windows file protection) as this is an incredible annoyance for many people and will greatly increase the time required for your installation.  furthermore, malicious folks and vendors that write drivers know how to get around this nonsense anyway.
    * next is "tweaks" and then you'll finish up by building your installation. i typically cut the size of a default windows xp install by about 50%, but i'm a bit agressive with what i remove.  also some of that space is used by 3rd party software to replace the components removed.
    * if you are comfortable with virtual machine software, that'd be the way to test your shiny new installation ISO. if not, then get ready to take the plunge
    when installed an nLite OS on my thinkpad for the first time (a day or 2 after i got it), i did a test install first - i kept the recovery partition in tact. once i got comfortable with installing the drivers and got everything working, i un-hid and formatted the recovery partition -- gone! you may want to do the same, though speaking from expierence i can tell you that it's rather trivial to get everything working on my T60 (though i do not have nor did i want a fingerprint reader, i would doubt it would be an issue to get working).
    * once windows is up and running, there will be allot of broken stuff
    some of the "Fn" keys will not work, some will (because the hardware is configured in BIOS). you'll need to install the drivers for the items that you want to work, and this is another area where i depart from the norm. here's some things i don't install and the reasons why (whenever possible, any hardware below is disabled in BIOS or device manager):
    * easy eject utility - not needed/i don't use it anyway
    * hotkey driver - bloated and sometimes buggy software that may corrupt OGL and DX full-screen display (games) and cause stop errors (BSOD)
    * trackpoint - i don't use it, though it works anyway with limited functionality if not disabled in BIOS/device manager
    * trusted platform module - yeah, well i don't trust it
    * away manager -  don't use it/lighter weight alternitives available
    * keyboard customizer - not needed/i don't use it
    * scroll lock indicator - not needed/i don't use it
    * software installer - bloated mess/not needed (subscribe to the Lenovo RSS feed to be made aware of updates)
    * thinkpad configuration package - i'll configure it myself, thanks
    * thinkvantage access connectkions - bloated mess/slows boot time/not needed (better and lighter weight alternitives * available if you need this functionality)
    * ultra-nav wizard - not needed
    * bluetooth - i install the microsoft bluetooth stack (which is smaller and simpler) and have noticably less lag with bluetooth devices resuming from a standby state (mouse in particular)
    * display drivers - i use the highly acclaimed and optimized Omega drivers.
    for the drivers i do install, i install only the drivers, NOT the software (in other words i do not run the installer). i do this by extracting the installer using IZArc or Universal Extractor and using device manager to point the hardware to the extracted *.inf files.  for me, there is only one device that comes up "unknown device" before drivers are installed (i forget which).  the rest are named, so it's easy to tell what path to give them for the drivers. installing drivers for the unknown device is then simple a process of elimination, or you can use software to help identify the device.
    ::: the end :::
    hack it 'till it BREAKS!

    *bookmarked for desection*
    I already see flaws, like turning off remote registry for example. Remote registry only has very limited access, and you can change the access, but why would you? You can see what it has access to by going into Control Panel > Administative Tools > Local Security Policy > > Local Polices > Security Options, then scroll a little more than half-way, and it's under the Network access box.
    There are so many crack pot guides out there, that the only good advice is to look where they looked, and if you don't get it, and don't go though all of it, LEAVE IT ALONE! It only makes servicing the box at a later time a HUGE pain, and if it's in a business, it'll just be reimaged.
    Keep this guy's disclaimer in mind at all times. Just do the easy ones to start, like run CCleaner, it basically does everything for you, and doesn't cause any errors (or as far as I know, and I use it just about every other day)
    Currently Just passed the CompTIA A+ 601 with flying colours! =D

  • How do i use my apple id with ichat?

    how do i use my apple id with ichat?

    Hi,
    Only @Mac.com and MobileMe Apple IDs are valid AIM names as well  (And the Passwords need to be 16 characters of Less - AIM end Issue).
    If you have any other form of Apple ID then you will need to register for either an @mac.com name  or create an AIM one.
    NOTE The @Mac.com Registration requires you link an active Email to the @Mac.com name.
    THIS CANNOT BE an Email address you have used for an Apple ID already.
    The AIM Registration asks for Email address for Security and Password Recovery and is not Hard Linked in the same way (you could use the same email to set up multiple accounts/Screen Names)
    To state things another way:-
    A MobileMe ID is an Email address.
    It is an Apple ID and will work in those places it is supposed to, iTunes, Apple Support Communities (with Alias set up), Face Time (With Registration) Apple On-Line Store, Mac App Store.
    It is a Vlaid AIM NAme as well (If the password is kept to 16 characters or less).
    @mac.com names are Apple IDs with the same access as above.
    It is a Valid AIM Screen Name.
    If it was registered before MobileMe started it maybe linked to a Current MobileMe account as a valid Email.
    A Current Registration is purposely for iChat use and Requires a Non Apple current Email that is NOT linked to any other Apple ID
    Any other name or Email used to create an Apple ID is not an Email with/through Apple.
    It is NOT a valid AIM screen Name.
    It is only an Apple ID that allows access to the places listed above.
    If it is an email this cannot be used to Register with @mac.com
    I hope this is clear.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the    Discussions
    This line
    /System/Library/Frameworks/IMCore.framework/iChatAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/iChatA gent
    Tells you what is having problems and where it is on your Hard Drive.
    As iChatAgent is having an issue I would start with deleting the .plist for it.
    Go to your Home Folder/Library/Preferences and delete com.apple.ichatAgent.plist and restart iChat.

  • How do I use iChat (Jabber) to utilize my MSN account?

    Heya,
    So I have a client that their whole team uses MSN messenger, of course that is not the easiest thing to setup in iChat, but I've been told from various sources it can certainly be done. However, all the tutorials I've found on it are convoluted and I'm not very good at following instructions. Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

    Jabber worksok but weird things happend to me. I ended up with contacts of my contacts, people that I did not know they existed....Don't be surprise if you have people asking who you are.
    Also, it seems that if you use live messenger on another computer and add new contacts, when you login back to jabber, it will pop up confirmation messeges. Also A/V does not seems to work with jabber. That was the only reason why I tried jabber and I was very disappointed
    Bottom line, Ichat is nice if you pay the $100/year to use it, otherwise it *****

  • IChat - Synching Chatting History from multiple devices on same account

    I currently have the iChat server up and running on a MacMini running OS X 10.6.4. I see in the iChat client on my MacBook Pro where it will load past messages when I open a chat with a buddy. I am also running a jabber client on my iPhone (IM+ is the iPhone app). What I am curious about is if there is a way to load chat history for the account, not just from the device.
    For instance, when using Skype the following will occur. I can chat on my iPhone, and then when I login to my Laptop, the history of chats sent from my iPhone will be added to the history on my Laptop. I am trying to prevent having to look back at every device I use my jabber account on to find that one IM message that has the information I need.
    Is there a way to sync the account on all clients (or at least just my MacBook Pro) so I can view chats there sent from all my devices and not just from my Laptop?

    Tim,
    I have turned on the logging feature inside of the iChat server, and I have seen all IMs being sent are saved.
    So do you think this is more of a client side problem of not being able to sync from the Message Archive on the OS X Snow Leopard 10.64 iChat server? Meaning that if the IMs are being saved, then all that really needs to be done is to create a client that will access the server log and do a compare of its local saved history with the server saved history and then takes any missing IMs and adds to its local history log?
    Am I far off base on this, or does this seem feasable?

  • How do I get messages to go back to an AIM account? It's only seeing the iPad's Facetime email address and not seeing the old AIM account name that is on my desktop. I am using my iMac using iChat to talk to a newer iMac that doesn't have iChat.

    How do I get messages to go back to an AIM account? It's only seeing the iPad's Facetime email address and not seeing the old AIM account name that is on my desktop. I am using my iMac using iChat to talk to a newer iMac that doesn't have iChat. We had this working using Messages and Facetime (on the new machine) talking to my existing iChat account. One day last week, when Facetime rang, my kids answered on the iPad. Dang! Now it's all fouled up! The new iMac won't see my AIM account name and shows that I'm offline, because the iPad is off. We were able to call using "most recent call" in Facetime, but now I can't go and control that new iMac remotely to help with some email concerns the user is having. I'm trying to not personalize this too much, but it's grandkids talking to Grandma and Mom and Dad trying to solve new machine hiccups. Normally, I could just go in via iChat and control the other machine and troubleshoot, but I can't do it with Facetime only. My buddy list doesn't see  the other computer even though we are connected on Facetime right now. My name is not highlighted for the other computer. What could have gone so wrong?
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Error occurs while activating a 'Write Optimized' DSO.

    I am getting error " There is no PSA for infosource 'XXXX'  and source system 'XXX' while activating a newly defined DSO object.
    I am able to activate a Standard DSOs, however the error occurs while activating a 'Write Optimized' DSO

    Hi,
    For write optimised DSO, check if you have tick the uniqueness of the records. If you check that and if there are two same records coming from source in one go, then you will get error
    From SAP help
    You can specify that you do not want to run a check to ensure that the data is unique. If you do not check the uniqueness of the data, the DataStore object table may contain several records with the same key. If you do not set this indicator, and you do check the uniqueness of the data, the system generates a unique index in the semantic key of the InfoObject. This index has the technical name "KEY". Since write-optimized DataStore objects do not have a change log, the system does not create delta (in the sense of a before image and an after image). When you update data into the connected InfoProviders, the system only updates the requests that have not yet been posted.

  • Error while deleting data from a write optimized DSO using a Process Chain?

    Dear Bwers,
    I am facing a strange error while using process chains to delete data from data target which is a write optimized DSO. The process shows as failed but the data gets deleted in the DSO. The error message is as below. Did anybody have a similar problem? Any suggestions.
