Optimizing Tiger and FCP 5

For some reason i keep getting dropped frames on playback after upgrading everything to tiger and fcp 5...
(i have two installations on seperate drives, one still running FCP 4.5 on OS 10.3.9 and the other with Tiger and FCP 5)
i'm wondering about setting in Tiger and FCP, perhaps some one can either make some suggestions or direct me to a page that lists these.

does firwire 800 run on the same bus as 400 (the one i am using for my ntsc output to monitor)?
I thought i could run a firewire 800 drive with a firewire dv camera at the same time.
hmm.
I actually do have another fireiwre card installed but i am running more than one drive, a piece of digidesign hardware (digi 002) and a dv camera... thought i should be able to do all that with all of the firewire ports i now have but maybe not..

  • Last tiger and fcp: cannot export back to mini dv

we used to be able with old Mac Os and fcp to reexport to mini dv, wether on our jvc super vhs, or sony and panasoni cameras. we just are not able to do it now; anybody has a solution?

Check your firewire cable. shouldnt be any difference between printing to video on 4.5 or 5. Or perhaps its something else. I am honestly aware of many problems I and some others are having with Tiger / FCP 5, this is not one of them that I'm aware of.

  • FCP-just upgraded to tiger and FCP Studio-reports 'Missing FW connection".

I just finished upgrading 3 computers to OS 10.4.7 and FCP Studio, then installed all the obvious updates.
The first 2 computers, a G5 and G4, had no problems seeing and capturing video via FW.
The last computer, my primary workhorse, cannot find the tape device, a DSR 20. Upon clicking 'continue', to finish loading FCP, in A/V settings, the system reports the Apple FW is "missing". I've switched out the cable, then the tape devices, I've rebooted and thrown prefrence and plist files... etc...
Here's a weird thing, the controller in the log and capture window works fine to control the deck, but it won't pass or capture the video.
I'm getting ready to reinstall everything. Anybody have an opinion?
    Thank you,

Often in upgrading the OS, QT or FCP for some odd reason QT will get knocked slightly off kilter. The usual solution it to force a full reinstall of QT.
    This is how:
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    Reboot
    Good luck.

  • Bella Keyboard problem w/Tiger and 5.0

Anyone else having problems with their Bella Keyboard since switching to Tiger and FCP 5? Have their 5102 keyboard and have updated their latest driver. My problem is the jog wheel (inside one) doesn't work properly. Thanks, Richard

It looks like the problem will not go away, even with the latest update. That is, when you rotate the inner wheel and stop, the playhead keeps moving for a couple of seconds or more.

  • Kona SD and FCP 5.1-Tiger

I was wondering if anyone of you are still using the older Kona SD card in your G5s, and whether you've upgraded to FCP 5 and Tiger. I'm trying to see if I can get away with not having to buy a new card.
Using an external FW drive, I installed Tiger and the FCP 5 Studio and whatever drivers I could find. I have it so I can edit and my NTSC monitor works, but I haven't been able to get control of my Sony Betacam SP deck.
One problem is Black Magic used to make the drivers for AJA Kona, but they parted ways and thus the DeckLink cards. All this means I don't get a lot of support from either camp. Just buy a new one...
I updated drivers for the Keyspan serial connection, I tried Decklink drivers, Kona drivers. Still can't control the deck. Anyone? Thanks.

I have had a fantastic success with AJA Tech support in the states. All is now running sweetly.
What has happened in the interim is that I trashed FCP Prefs and this allowed it to launch - without losing all my Filter settings. I had been reluctant because I've been experimenting with many various settings, while between projects, and was afraid I'd lose them. But FCP ran awkwardly and the sound was at least a second ahead of picture.
I spoke with AJA Tech Support in California, I tend to work at night so ringing around the world was alright. I spoke with Rudy who was really friendly and when I explained the crashing FCP but the successful Motion and After Effects, and the FCP Prefs part solution, he told me about the Utility in the System Library, inside a folder called Core Services that is called the Expansion Utility, here he got me to explain where the various radio buttons were set and the messages visible there.
The card was set to the top Default selection and this resulted in the card being "strangled", operating at much less than its real capability - the Intel requires the second set down if it is going to function at full speed and when I had selected that and rebooted (Quitting the Utility requires a restart) all was fine, FCP started happily, the Audio is in sync and the images move smoothly - (they had been rather jerky, stuttery).
The reputation of AJA Tech Support gets yet another boost, Rudy was really good, and Support phone operators really nice too. Very successful.

  • Quicktime 7.0.3 and FCP 4.5

Are there major issues with these two? I am on 10.3.9 OS
FCP has been acting a little weird since installing QT 7.0.3. It's harder to make exact cuts in the timeline among other issues.

Yes...there are major issues. Do not use QT 7, 10.3.9 and FCP 4.5. VERY FEW people have gotten it to work right. If you go to Tiger, QT 7 and FCP 4.5, you might have better luck (might) but best to stick with QT 6.5 with FCP 4.5.
A few peole might say "hey, but it works for me," but those people are dwarfed by that ones that it doesn't work for.

  • Can I run Tiger and Leopard on the same computer

    Hi folks.
I've been meaning to install Leopard for ages but have never got round to it (I bought the retail box when it first came out). I have upgraded my RAM to 2GB and my hard drive to 320GB with no problems.
My upgraded hard drive has been partitioned into 2 equal parts of 160GB. These appear on desktop as Mackintosh HD1 and HD2. HD1 is the disk with all my files, music, OS etc and HD2 is empty
I have 2 bootable clones of my present system - one is on a 160GB external and the other is the original 80GB HD that I replaced.
My question is this - can I install Leopard on to my 160GB external HD, then clone it on to the empty HD2. If I do this would I be able to run both Tiger and Leopard on the same Macbook?
Is there any problems with this plan? Would I be able to transfer between the 2 OS and how do I install Leopard on the external drive. Is it just a case of inserting the Leopard DVD and choose the external drive as the target?
    As usual thanks in advance

    # Original Tiger in the internal HD, New Leopard in the external HD.
    # New Leopard in the internal, Legacy cloned Tiger in the external.
    # Split internal, one partition with Tiger, another with Leopard.
Leopard is backwardly compatible with older Macs, just make sure yours fulfills the minimum system requirements, both use the same filesystem format, so each can see the other. You can't run both at the same time, unless you purchase the server version of Leopard and run it virtualized. 99.9% of Firewire external HD's are bootable, some USB's are bootable but have to test first. You can choose which system to boot from by pressing the Option key at boot time, before the chime. Just make sure the external HDD is plugged in and turned on if that's where you want to boot from.
When I migrated my PBG4 from Panther to Tiger, got an external FW HDD, cloned Panther onto it, upgraded using Archive and Install, cleaned up, customized and tested it. When I was satisfied all was ok, cloned the original Panther onto another partition of the external HDD, wiped and tested for failure the internal HDD, then cloned the known good and tested Tiger into it. Only thing that died along the way was my old and ancient Photoshop v2.x, that refused to run on Tiger.

  • I installed Tiger and now my printer/scanner won't work

Hi. I installed Tiger and now my multi function printer/scanner/fax is not recognized by my computer. I have the Brother MFC 420 CN. I downloaded some drivers and such which I thought would resolve the issue, but still it does not work. What can I do? Thank you.

    According to this page:
    http://www.brother.com/E-ftp/macosxstate.htm
The MFC-420 CN is not listed. Sounds like you have a printer whose driver never was updated. Contact Brother technical support and ask them to fix that issue.

  • How do I do a Clean install of Tiger and Classic?

My G4 came with Jaguar. OS 9 was part of the complete installation, that you could install or choose not to install. My computer has been having a lot of issues lately and I think that a clean install would be a good idea, especially, since I used an upgrade to install Panther and then installed Tiger on top of Panther. I want to install classic and Tiger. How do I do this properly? Thanks

I plan to back up my personal files and any
    downloaded software I have.
Amazing that. You've told us that numerous times, but
you've failed to provide us with information on
HOW you're going to do this. That is, please
explain WHAT you're using for the backup and
WHERE you're planning on using to store the
    backup.
All Power Macs come with the capability of burning CD's today. Mine can also burn DVD's, so backing up MY files is NOT a problem. I just can't clone my whole drive. Now, I'm not sure how this is pertinent in answering my question about how to properly do a clean install of Tiger and be able to install Classic. My son however, just told me he thinks that all I need to do is to clean-install Tiger. Then, insert the installation CD with classic on it that came with my computer. Find the invisible file, which is a disk image and drag the contents of the disk image to my computer. If anyone can tell me if this is correct, I would appreciate it.

  • Tiger and Snow Leopard on an external hard drive?

    Hi,
I have a mini mac running tiger and I need to update my itunes and ipod touch which i cant currently do in tiger.
I dont want to upgrade my hard drive as most of my programs wont work with the update, eg. photoshop and dont want to buy a new photoshop package.
As i have a spare external hard drive, I was wondering if I could run leopard or snow leopard on that and update itunes that way, thus keeping tiger running on my mini mac, and have the option of which system to run. Is this possible?
    Many Thanks.

Hi, yes you can, & with a big enough drive you could partition it for multiple bottable OSX Partitions.
    Leopard requirements/10.5.x...
        *  Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor
    minimum system requirements
        * 512MB of memory (I say 1.5GB for PPC at least, 2-3GB minimum for IntelMacs)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * 9GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
You have to call Apple & likely ask for a Product Specialist to get it, if they still have it! Helps to tell them you have an iPad/iPhone & you can't run 10.6.
List of Applications Not Compatible with Leopard...
    http://guides.macrumors.com/List:Applications_Not_Compatible_with_Leopard
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.

  • Matrox MX02 Mini and FCP 7...

We have been using the MX02 Mini essentially for HD monitoring and have run across a few issues that have hindered productivity. It appears that one or two of these issues have been fixed in the latest 2.2.1 software release. The following remain. Has anyone experienced the same?
    1) Audio scrubbing... audio cannot be heard on a per frame basis, usually audio is heard every three
    frames or so.
Apparently this has not been fixed.
    2) Audio playback. In the viewer... Hit play... Playback begins but the audio drops out and then
resumes... hit stop and playback repeats the last bit of what was playing before you hit stop.
    3) Audio distorts, similar to an analog overdrive sound, when hitting play every 10 times or so.
Most of the projects that we are working with are Apple Pro Res 422 @ 23.98, Audio 48khz/16 bits.
Most of our computers are as described... 2 x 2.26GHz Quad Core Mac Pro running 10.6.6 and FCP 7.0.3.
Hard drives are local external 2TB G-RAIDs with plenty of room. We have check all of our media to make sure that it matches our sequence settings.
I realize that there are Matrox advocates out there, but we seem to have a hard time getting the MX02 Minis to work reliably.
All ideas are welcome. Note that we are working with Matrox support as well.
    Thanks,
    Scott

    1) Audio scrubbing... audio cannot be heard on a per frame basis, usually audio is heard every three frames or so. Apparently this has not been fixed.
Well, that actually is the main thing that was addressed in that update. I didn't have the issue for a while, then I upgraded to snow leopard, and there it was. But that was something with the 2.0 and first 2.1 drivers. But the latest driver that was just released, 2.1.1...fixes that. For a lot of people, me included:
    http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/132/860478
    http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/132/860397
As for the other issues, that are all audio related... they should have been addressed too.
Make sure to update PROPERLY. Uninstall the older drivers, then restart. Install the new drivers... and when the updates erase and then update the firmware, when the computer will shut down, and you need to unplug the MXO2 mini for at least 5 seconds, then plug it back in. Then start up the system.

  • New 13" MacBook Pro and FCP Express?

Is the new 13" MBP OK for light video editing with iMovie or FCP Express and little photo editing with Photoshop Elements?
For video I use Panasonic AG-HMC40 AVCCAM HD.
    Thanks!

    Graphics.
However, as I keep telling everyone, I have an almost prehistoric 2004 G4 eMac (1.25GHz 768MB RAM and 32MB VRAM) which ran and still does run, FCE 4 and FCP 6 perfectly well.
The only minor problem was that the new FxPlug effects did not work, but with 200 other effects there was still plenty to keep anyone happy.
Your setup will not have that problem and even though it isn't the latest iteration it should still be excellent for the job.
