Optimum set-up

I have two iMacs and a broadband internet connection supplied via British telecom with their home hub. I've been having trouble maintaining a connection between my main Mac and AppleTV and it has been suggested that it is because its not going via a hub per se.
Q: What would the optimum set up be - I'm thinking Airport Extreme connected to my ADSL router which would then act as a hub for the house. If my Macs connect to this, would Apple TV see the Macs via the Airport Extreme or would they still not see the Macs directly?
Any help would be graetly appreciated.

first, does it sound like I set it up correctly from what I wrote?
Yes, all sounds correct.
Second, I heard that adding a b/g AX to the network will slow everything down to b/g speeds but I have also read that simply using B/G AX's to add speakers by joining the network will not slow down the N network....which is it?
The b/g AX devices will not slow down the network unless they are actively streaming AirTunes. Even then, audio streaming does not require a great deal of bandwidth, so for the most part, the effect would be negligible. Don't worry about it.
Is my network slowed down to b/g speeds because of my speaker set up or not?
The speed on your network will depend on a number of factors..are you downloading something while copying something else? Are you simply browsing? How far is the computer from the closest wireless access point?
You can check your current available bandwidth on your local network by doing the following:
Hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen. Look for the Transmit Rate number.
"g" wireless = 54 Mbps
What do you see?
Oh, and by the way, I don't know if this matters, but while the time capsule serves as the main base station, it is in bridge mode because it is plugged into a 2wire gateway router.
If the Time Capsule is in bridge mode, it cannot act as the main base station. If you want, you could think of it that way if you are using the wireless on the Time Capsule as your preferred network, but the Time Capsule is not the "main" router.

• Optimum set-up with external library and iTunes Match

I'm a little frustrated with iTunes Match and iTunes, as it doesn't seem to play nice with libraries stored on an external disk on a network. Here's my current set-up, and any tips on how to eliminate some of the steps I have to take would be much appreciated.
Set-up:
One iTunes Media folder stored on external network drive at home
Another iTunes Media folder, titled "Away from Home", stored on Macbook
iTunes Match is turned on and has all songs (that qualify) uploaded onto it
Own multiple devices that access iTunes Match
If I leave my network and want to use iTunes Match, I have to:
1. Turn off iTunes.
2. Option-click iTunes and hold option to select a library.
3. Choose my "Away from Home" library (or create a new one for those who haven't done this already)
4. Sign in to iTunes, Turn on iTunes Match and add my computer/library to iTunes Match
5. iTunes Match does it's thing which obviously means it adds 0 songs due to having an empty library, then all my iTunes Match songs populate my library
That is all fine and great. However, when I return home and want to listen to ALL songs, meaning those that didn't qualify and the unedited versions (since iTunes Match STILL pushes clean versions of songs), I must take these steps:
1. Turn off iTunes.
2. Option-click itunes and hold option to select my library on external network drive
3. iTunes loads up, but only loads ~16,000 of 19,000 songs
4. Turn iTunes off again.
5. Open Finder, hold option when I click Go in menu bar, go to Library<Preferences and delete the com.apple.iTunes.plist file.
6. Open iTunes again, this time not holding option
7. iTunes opens as if it's been updated or newly installed (meaning it asks if I agree to the T&SA).
8. All songs now found and appear
This is downright stupid. I shouldn't have to take all of these steps to do each of these. It may not sound like it takes a long time, but when you come home and want to turn on music while cleaning, entertaining friends, etc., taking these steps is a hassle and makes iTunes become a chore to run. Is there not a way to simply access my songs in the Cloud without closing iTunes and having to choose a different library? Or are these really the only steps I can take to access music from home and, subsequently, when I get back home?

• Attempting New ( Hopefuly Improved ? ) Set-Up

I have just made some adjustments to my G5 computer to aid in the rendering speed
of FCP ver 5.1
The first was to add an additional internal hard drive, the other was to put in
a PCI board to allow an eSATA connection to the external hard drive which holds
all the media.
Can anyone advise on the optimum set-up ? I was thinking
Allow the program to run off the original internal hard drive
Use the new internal hard drive as the scratch disc / destination for rendering files, etc
Use the external hard drive ( now with eSATA as opposed to FirwWire ) to hold
the media.
Does this sound about right ?
Also, If I change the scratch disc to the new hard drive ( as opposed to the
external drive where it had been ) will this create problems with current
projects, or should it be as easy as just redirecting them to the newly located
scratch disc ?

• What is the best preferrence setting for Photoshop CS5 64 Bit Extended?

I upgraded my PC a few months back and I'm currently running the CS5 suites. A few weeks ago I started having issues with the CS5 suites freezing up and in some cases even crashing on me. I always run Illustrator, Photoshop, Indesign and bridge at the same time, as I'm constantly moving between program on any given project. What I'd like to know, is if there's an optimum setting to use in the preferences for Photoshop 64 Bit Extended to help it run more smoothly and efficiently, without the computer or program bogging down or crashing on me. Below is a list of the hardware I'm running, which I've been told is more than enough to run the CS5 suites. Any information would be greatly appreciated, as I'm starting to get frustrated with the performance.
Hardware & operating system:
- Windows 7 service pack 3

• What cache setting should I use?

I recently downloaded a health check and was advised to optimize the firefox cache. What's the best setting for performance?

I would stick with the default settings which is 50MB. If you use sites which use large files such as YouTube you could increase it. There is no optimum setting.
Firefox 4 will use a different method to determine the size of the cache.

• Photoshop CS6: Why is ACR set to 240 ppi by default, and not 300 ppi?

Does anybody have any idea as to why ACR is set to 240 ppi by default? Isn't 300 ppi the optimum setting for printing purposes? Is there a good reason, or reasons, why Adobe chose 240 ppi as the default setting?
I'd like to know if it is advisable to change ACR's settings from this default 240 ppi to 300 ppi. I know any perceived difference, when it comes to printing images, may be negligible, but why not, if it is just a matter of simply changing it to 300 ppi permanently?
I am uneasy about changing this, however, until I find out a lot more about it, as I want the best quality, and if there are undesirable consequences by changing ACR to 300 ppi that I am not aware about, and, therefore, why Adobe have it set it to 240 ppi, then I'll leave it at the default setting.

Hi,
Setting this value to 240, 300 or whatever else will not change anything. The TIF or JPEG file generated from the RAW file will just have a metadata field containing this value (actually, there are 2 fields : XResolution and YResolution, usually set to the same value). The rest of the file will remain unchanged. Two files generated from the same RAW one at 240 dpi and the other at 300 dpi will only differ by that field.
When you load the file in PS (or when ACR transmits a raw image to the PS bitmap engine along with its metadata), the dpi value found in the metadata will only affect the default values that will be used in the File | Print dialog, Position and Size section. By default, PS will compute the printed size of the document according to the indication given in the XResolution/YResolution field. If you change the desired dimension or if you "scale to fit", the dpi resolution will change.
The dpi value specified in ACR or in any other software is only an indication. It never affects the image itself. Actually, this dpi value has no meaning until the image is "realized". A dpi value only makes sense when the pixel are transformed into ink dots in a printer or to display pixels on a screen. Until then, this value has no meaning.
Moreover, in Lightroom (which makes printing much more easy than in PS), it is actually recommended to not specify any dpi value. That field should usually be left blank. You specify the print target dimensions and LR will automatically compute the right dpi value.

• Optimum picture quality Canon XH A1s to FCE

Hi,
I have been experimenting with a Canon xh a1s camera to FCE and am wondering if anyone can help with finding the best settings to maximise image quality transfer.
I have shot some tests in HD using various filters, etc. and set the frame rate to 25. The output on the camera is set for HDV.
Connecting to FCE via firewire, in Easy Setup is it better to use:
Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50
or
one of the Codec settings for 1920, 1440?
What is the optimum setting?
Thanking you in advance.

• How to SET or Configure BIOS to use XFX6200 TC video card for MSI K8N NEO4 Plat.

Hello Friends,
Can any body help me to the following problem?
I am having XFX 6200 TC Geforce / nvidia Grafix card for my MSI K8N NEO4 Platinum Ultra board.
The BIOS states PCIE clock speed as 100 Mhz as default. The setting can be changed upto 145Mhz.
My Video card can be configured upto 350 Mhz. How to do this and which is the right way to use the display card with optimum setting?
Thanks for all those who reply to this.

the coolbits link http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=815
to manually set the clocks on the graphic card, after installing coolbits, just follow the instruction on that page:

Unpack the achive (self extracting) and then in the setup directory simply click on the .reg file. To get to these options simply right-click on your desktop and go to 'NVIDIA Analog Display' (Win XP/2003). For Win 2000 and lower you may need to get to the Nvidia Control Panel the old way. Right click desktop > Properties > Settings > Advanced > GeForce xxxx
for overclocking just take a look at the overclocking sections of the forum. make sure to read the stickies before you do anything.

• Best quality animated gif export

Hi
I was doing just fine exporting animated gifs (in terms of quality output) and all of a sudden on an update to my fireworks png my exports (no matter what options I change) are just not as good quality as before.
Essentially, I am trying to get as close to the JPEG 100% quality (best quality) I can get - drop shadows on items just don't like that great at moment.
Could someone please advise what is absolute optimum setting for best quality output for an animated gif - I am not concerned about file size.
many thanks
Jeff

Without seeing the image/animation, I can't make specific comments.
However. Keep in mind that the GIF format has an indexed palette of 256 colors, total, one of which can be transparent. If you have a still image of 256 shades of red, and a still image of 256 shades of blue, they'll look fine as GIFs. If you try to combine them as an animated GIF, then the palette will need to be 128 shades each of red and blue, so neither of the images as frames in the animation will look as good as they do as stills.
Also, Fireworks doesn't always give you the maximum amount of colors. If you have an image with 1000 colors, and you export to GIF, you probably won't get 256 colors in your palette. Go to File>Image Preview and see what your palette is. If necessary, add colors from your image where you notice banding (with dithering off).
Finally, the two image formats are not equally appropriate for all image content. GIF is good for line art of solid colors. It isn't good for photos or gradients. If you can forgo your drop shadows you'll probably get better quality in the essential parts of the images. JPEGs are good for photos and gradients (although I prefer PNGs for gradients, myself), and are not good for line art. Unfortunately, if you want an animation, you need a GIF or Flash.

• KT6 Delta stability and performance problems

Hi all!
My brother and I recently assembled my new computer. Since then I’ve been experiencing two problems that really bug me. I’m no expert at this stuff so if you guys need more info from me to try to help, just say so!
Problem 1:
The optimum setting for my processor is a CPU FSB Clock of 166 Mhz, but I’m only able to reach 160 Mhz. 161-163 will work but is extremely unstable. 164-166 will cause Windows to dump to a blue screen and reboot.
I’ve seen that other people on this board have had similar problems. Note that I’ve set CPU Ratio to Auto and SDRAM Timing to SPD. What could be causing the problem? Could a simple BIOS update help (I’m running the one that was delivered with the motherboard)? How about clearing CMOS?
Problem 2:
Maybe due to the above problem, I’m also having stability problems when I do get into Windows. On some days it’s fine, other days it’s a mess.
All of a sudden, while surfing the net or gaming, the computer will dump to a blue screen with the info that Windows has been shut down to prevent further damage to the system. One of two error messages will be displayed:
“A thread tried to release a resource it did not own” (more common message) or “IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL” (less common).
The computer will then reboot automatically. It’s really hard to specify when this happens: it could come at any time.
The system I have is the following:
KT6 Delta (MS-6590) motherboard
AMD Athlon XP2500+ (1.833 Ghz)
TwinMOS PC3200 DDR-DIMM (2x256Mb)
Seagate Barracuda 80Gb S-ATA
My old IDE 12 Gb harddrive
PowerColor Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb
TDK CD-RW (40x/10x/40x)
Windows XP Professional with Sp1
Have any of you had similar problems? I appreciate any help I can get!!!
Regards,
Stefan

judd321: couldn't agree more! Thanx to all the people who post here and try to help out computer illiterate people like myself. Interesting to see that you've had the same problem.
Thought I'd give you an update on my situation. I've done some surfing and gotten some mixed messages. Some say that the included PSU that came with my Chenbro Gaming Bomb (FSP Group 350W, delivers 28A at +3,3V, 30A at +5v and 16A at 12V) is plenty to power a system with my specs. Others, like the good people on this board, claim that 350W just won't cut it.
I've just invested in an Aspire 520W (looks creepy and mod-ish). The dealer claimed that it really does deliver 520W at maximum performance and not just at peak. Before I install it I will try the following just to make sure it's the PSU that's causing me problems:
1) Confirm that I still cannot boot up with CPU Clock at 166Mhz. If all is still the same, Windows won't even start. If I, by the grace of the good Lord, do get my system running at 166, I'll monitor unwanted reboots. If system is stable, fine. If no:
2) I'll start by clearing CMOS, with battery and power cord out for at least 10 minutes. Then enter BIOS and run default settings EXCEPT CPU Clock which I'll set to 166Mhz. I'll try to reboot computer to see if this has done the trick. If yes, great. If no, I'll try the same thing but also set memory speed to 333. If that still doesn't work:
3) Clear CMOS with power cord disconnected. Unplug unneccesary components like CD-ROM, fan (not heatsink , floppy drive, any USB devices and my old IDE hard drive. Reboot the computer and set CPU Clock at 166. If the system works, it was definitely the PSU since the absence of the disconnected components will have allocated more power to the connected components. If it doesn't work...does anybody want to buy a pretty decent system that doesn't allow for full processor power and experiences frequent, unwanted reboots?
I'll let you know how things work out!

• CS5 and Elements 8

My client wants access to the .psd files I created for her book so she can save them as jpegs. There are way more files than I'm willing to save for her. Can she open the CS5 files in Elements 8, or will she need to get Elements 9?
Thanks.
T

Yes, resolution matters in print. Our print service bureau prefers 350-400ppi with no greater enlargement or reduction than 120% in the layout. I stuck with as little resizing as I could.
Here's what I tried, and I think I like it.
Save for Web with optimum setting for JPEG, changes to 72ppi but doesn't change dimensions. It also conversts to sRGB. so I dpn't have to mess with converting profiles. Save As psd file, change res to 96, adust pixel dimension back to original settings. Then save for web. Bumping it to 96ppi caused minimal inscrease in file size (for quick loading on the Web). But the change bumps up the images just enough. And I like the way it looks in my browser with monitor set at 1920x1090 (usual working space) or 800x600.
Now all I have to do is remember what I did. Thanks so much to all for this discussion, I would not have come up with this on my own. I guess I'll do this for my client. I'd hate for her head to implode.

• Pro Res in Final cut express How do i get a good quality SD DVD

I recently bought final cut express and have suffered getting a good quality SD DVD out through the workflow from my cannon XHA1.
On screen its fine but when i author through imovie to DVD the quality is poor.
So reading the various threads it would seem that i need to use Pro res and the ingress codec... But cant find this option in express ?
Question is. Is pro res codec available in express and if not can someone suggest the optimum set up for HD capture to SD DVD output
Many thanks

Use either of these techniques to get good quality DVDs from AIC.
1. Edit your HDV/AIC in the timeline. Then create a new DV-PAL (NTSC) Anamorphic sequence. Copy your edited HDV/AIC to the new sequence. Do not alter anything. Render the sequence ..... this will take a long time - up to twice the length of the project. Then File>Export>QuickTime Movie (Not Self-contained).
However, if you use the QT Movie in iDVD you will get a squashed 4:3 movie, so first of all you must make QT stretch it out to its proper 16:9 dimensions like this:-
+a. Open the exported movie file in the QT Pro player.+
+b. Go to Window>Show Movie Properties.+
+c. Select the "Video Track" and in the "Visual Settings" panel uncheck "Preserve Aspect Ratio".+
+d. In the "Scaled Size" box set the width to 1024 pixels for PAL.+
+e. The "Video Track" will have turned grey, so click it to make it blue again.+
+f. The opened movie file will jump to 16:9.+
+g. Close it with the red button and click Save.+
2. This method is fast. Set your camera to "Locked DV" which means that FCE/FCP will capture it as anamorphic DV and edit it as standard definition anamorphic DV. (Use Easy Setup ... DV-PAL (NTSC) Anamorphic).
You can then Export>QuickTime Movie to be used in iDVD and use the stretching technique mentioned above.

• Recommended ExpressCards for new 17" MBP for video editing

Ok, so after sitting on the fence for months I had to buy the new 17" MBP. I just couldn't wait any longer and my trusty PB G4 is getting slow.
After reading the enormous amounts of posts I can see why people are so upset about losing the ExpressCard slot in the 15" models.
But, for the 17" models does anyone have any good suggestions of Expresscards? And what is the optimum set-up I should go for?
I am an Avid and Final Cut editor using a 4-pin Firewire Sony DVCAM deck and two Western Digital External Drives daisy-chained together.
Would love some advice.
thanks!

The Sony DVCAM is FW400 (aka iLink, aka IEEE1394a), so a 4-pin-to-6-pin or -to-9-pin cable will do. I'd get the 4-pin-to-9-pin (FW800 is fully backward compatible with FW400) so you can connect directly to the MBP's FW800 port, if needed. You can just get a FW800 ExpressCard, since it's backward compatible.
I'd recommend this one:

• Incorrect Apple TV Preset

Hi,
have just got myself an Apple TV and was looking forward to getting the wife off my back; ever since I got a Sony Hard Disk AVCHD camcorder she's not seen any family video. I thought I had an easy life ahead as Final Cut Express copes so nicely, and it has a simple export to Apple TV Preset.
Alas, the footage is not being converted properly as Widescreen but is being squashed up. I know I could do some test footage and play with the MP4 settings myself but before I go down that tedious route (and believe me, I edit HDV on Avid as a day job so I've done this sort of thing MANY times...) I thought I'd pop in here and see if anyone else has come across this and/or solved it.
The footage in FCE is coming on from capture/log as AIC 1440 x 1080. My guess is that this "cheat" 1080 HD setting of Sony's is what the root cause is, but if anyone has discovered the optimum setting for exporting this to Apple TV I'd be eternally grateful.
As would my wife
D.

I have achieved playback with different settings. The trick is to follow the capability listed here: http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs.html
You can create your profile and it will play if it is in compliance. Since I do not have a lot of time for researching the matter at this time, I downloaded VisualHub at http://www.techspansion.com/visualhub/ and plan to use it until an Apple generated preset is updated into Compressor... (soon?)
It is economical, supposed to be fast(er?) but what I really liked about it was all the presests for a lot of platforms, including those that are rare and difficult from a Mac. The trial allows for 2 minutes exports.
I am testing it for the first time. You might want to do that before purchasing it. It promises to be a time saver.
