Optimum use of iCloud space

More family members are now on idevices. 5G now seems to be getting smaller and smaller. Is upgrading to the paid iCloud the only solution?
Can we have each family member have their own separate iCloud space? If yes, how do you set it up?

Each user should have their own icloud account, otherwise they end up getting the same emails, contacts, calendars, notes, reminders, etc. - usually not what you want. But if all have been sharing the same itunes ID, keep it that way, you can have different IDs for itunes and icloud.

Settings app > iCloud > Storage and Backup > <device>.
From there you can choose what to back up (apps' data) and see how much each backed up app is using (or would use if you turned it on).
For an average device, 1.9 GB sounds pretty reasonable.

I have a game app that I just bought but when I looked in my settings under iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage then under Documents & Data I noticed that game had used some iCloud space. I have iCloud backup off but in settings>iCloud Documents & Data is on along with few other ones like Contacts, Calendars, Reminders...etc. I'm curios if this game app is using the 5 gigabytes of free space I have that's not even on for backup? What documents & data actually get stored when Documents & Data are turned on? I totally understand the Contacts, Reminders, Bookmarks, Notes, Photostream...etc but somebody explain please what Documents & Data stores. Thanks.

The weather app that came with my iPhone 4s will sync with my iPod touch 4th generation weather app that it came with also. For example, if I add a city like Las Vegas on my iPhone then when I go to my iPod Touch, Las Vegas will be there as well. Also for example if i restore my iPhone or iPod touch clean, the weather data all appears there. All the cities that I've added for weather are there.

Both accounts are completely independent from each other. In order to use the space that you have purchased for your secondary account, you must change it to become your primary account. Yes, as you said, services like photo stream only work with the primary account. Unfortunately, there is no comfortable way to just transfer data from one account to another one, but you can do it via a third party application e.g. via Dropbox: e.g. for photos: photos stored with your current primary account > manual transfer to dropbox > after you made your secondary account to the primary account, transfer the photos back to your new primary account etc.

My 16gb iPhone 4 (running iOS 5.01) is full to the brim with music, apps etc. and yet my iCloud account is only using 0.2mb out of the 5GB free space Apple give - something ain't right!
How do I balance this out so I can install another App or album on my phone without shelling out? And yet I hear of some users running out of space. They seem to be iPad users rather than iPhone. To clarify has that 5gb free gotta be shared across however many iOS devices you buy?
By the way, I've already been into Settings--iCloud--Storage&Backup--Manage Storage--(My Name)'s iPhone and everything is ON.

You can't use the iCloud storage space to extend the space available on your phone. iCloud storage is for synced items and back ups not for adding more content onto your phone.

iTunes in the cloud doen't use your storage space. It is a service that allows you to redownload previously purchased music and certain other media from the iTunes store (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519). However, you will have to download the music to your device in order to play it.
There is a separate subscription service called iTunes Match that will allow you to access your iTunes library from iCloud. It has its own storage space and doesn't use your iCloud storage plan. (See http://www.apple.com/itunes/itunes-match/).

I am thinking about purchasing some addition icloud space as mine and my partners iphones keep filling up...can you tell me is there a way to allow them access to my icloud space when we have separate itunes log in's?
I would like for them to be able to access and upload photos, music, any generally be able to use the space as I would be able to...this doesnt seem to be available in family sharing.
I am not the best technologically so please bear with me

no, storage space cannot be shared between different Apple IDs/iCloud accounts. Another option which is definitely not recommended and does not make much sense would be to use one account together.

I wouldn't think so. Everyone who migrated from a MobileMe account got an extra 20GB free until 30 Sept, and the emails now being sent out presumably go to everyone regardless of any subsequent storage purchase. As you've paid for 50GB this should be unaffected (but I should keep an eye on it!). If that did not reduce Other, then unfortunately the source of the problem is contained in your backup and the only way to solve it is to save as much of your data as you can, then restore as a new iPhone and start over. You can save your photo stream photos to the camera roll (by opening the my camera roll album, tap Edit, tap all the photos, tap Share, tap Save to Camera Roll), then import your photos and videos to your computer (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083), write down all your email account settings, back up your contacts, calendar, reminders and notes by syncing them with iCloud. If you have any voice memos, you can email them to yourself. If you have voicemails, music not purchased from the iTunes store or photos in your photo library that are not on your computer or in your iTunes library you'll have to use 3rd party software to save these, such as Touch Copy (PC and Mac) or PhoneView (Mac only). Then transfer your purchases to your iTunes library (File>Devices>Transfer Purchases) and sync your phone. This will save most of your data, but you will lose your text message conversations.
The other option is not to back up to iCloud and instead back up to your computer using iTunes. You're problem with Other won't go away and will probably continue to get worse until you bite the bullet and deal with it.

Suggest you give different name to each iPad to prevent confusion.

Does iCloud use up storage space on my MacBook too? When I copied files from an external drive to my iCloud drive, my available space on my MacBook went from 40GB free to less than 2 GB. I thought iCloud was separate storage where I can free up space on my MacBook.

To free up space you want to look for:
1) files you no longer need. Omni DiskSweeper will help you see what's on the SSD.
2) if you use iPhoto be aware that it has its own trash can. If you delete files from iPhoto you must then right click on the iPhoto trash can and select delete or the pictures remain on the hard drive.
3) look for movies, tv shows, digital photos and music you can move to an external drive or mini-flash drive and then delete from the SSD. These are very large files so you can free up lots of space with just a few deletions. Example: my entire Documents folder is smaller than one two hour movie.

You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots. Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.

You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library. Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

If you delete the music from the iPhone, yes. But perhaps you should be looking at what else is taking of storage on the iPhone, back it up, and delete those things as well.

On the wife's hers is doing the same as yours backup says 400Mb but the available is only 3.5Gb !
We did have trouble with hers after loading ios5 with mail and calendars so we clicked the delete iCloud button on the iPad then re logged back in to iCloud did you do a similar thing as I am wondering if some how the old data has not registered as gone and has added the new back up data to the storage figures !
