Optimzing, Defragmenting,etc. on the Macmini

Hi all,
I'd like your thoughts on optimizing and defragmenting the Mac mini to perform at tip top shape and prevent any viruses. I have cocktail software but havent really learned the ins and outs.
Thanks for your help,
web dude

Unless you work with large files - video or RAW images for example - there's really no need to be concerned at defragmenting since MacOS handles that on the fly for the files it needs.
For optimizing, the simple answer is that you generally have to do nothing. MacOS also handles these tasks pretty much and usually very well. It creates and maintains cache files to help system performance and through a process of prebinding links applications with library files etc. As with any complex system, things can go wrong of course, and that's where an application such as Cocktail comes in useful - though personally I prefer YASU because it offers a more simple and focussed set of 'maintenance' tools than most of the others, and gives you no features that could actually create more problems than resolve.
Even then, I would only use such a tool when there were indications of a problem that needed to be resolved, such as slow application launching or applications that begin to suddenly quit, or if the system bogs down unexpectedly as if it's lost a processor core. At that sort of time, the behavior of the system will often tell you which of the tune up tasks are best suited to be run - sudden application quits for example can be caused by permission problems, slow launching or stalls by prebinding errors. Cleaning system caches can also resolve instabilities in systems that have otherwise behaved perfectly well (though the next bootup after doing this will appear to be rather slow - that's normal).
Many will tell you to repair permissions with Disk Utility before and after installations, run 'cron' scripts every few days, and perhaps a whole host of other things, but truth be told, MacOS is designed to work well on it's own with minimal intervention, and those of us who tend to practice that by leaving our systems alone usually have no problems to speak of.
However, I do keep a copy of YASU on my system just in case (used on average once a year), a copy of Preferential treatment (for checking and removing faulty 'plist' files), a copy of Pacifist (in case I need to extract a specific installer from a bundled archive) and a few other bits and pieces that I've found useful such as Menu Meters (gives a useful display of system status which helps with quick diagnosis of issues if they arise) and MacJanitor (which provides a quick way of manually running the UNIX cron tasks that clean and rotate log files - a task that is generally needed somewhat infrequently).
Basically however I let the system get on with what it needs to do, and have no reason to regret that policy.
As for preventing viruses, of course as most will tell you there aren't any as yet. Actually that's not entirely true because there are some infections that can impact MS Office files and which are cross-platform, and of course a hundred thousand plus malware infections you can unwittingly get from Windows users and pass on if you're not aware of them, but these can't a don't have any effect on a Mac running MacOS (they can of course infect a Mac running Windows). However, the lack of MacOS malware at present doesn't mean that things will stay that way. MacOS is inherently more secure than Windows (even the new Vista flavors of Windows) but it still has vulnerabilities. There are many reasons perhaps why these are not being exploited - some suggest because MacOS is a platform used by very few users, though since UNIX and Linux have been targeted and they have a small user-base, that's really not a significant factor.
What is certain is that the potential exists for MacOS to be attacked and that at some point it seems reasonable to expect it will happen. To be prepared, a good solution is ClamXav, which is an open source antivirus application which suits MacOS really well because it requires very little processor overhead but can be set to watch the vulnerable locations on the system such as Mail folders, the desktop (where files are downloaded) and user documents folders - or indeed any other location by the user's choice. It can be downloaded from http://www.clamxav.com/ and while strictly not needed at this time, is a wise precaution to take, and can be very helpful if exchanging email with Windows users. It also helps to spot phishing attacks and websites containing malware scripts.
The best advice is for the most part to use your Mac rather than focus attention on looking after it!

  • Things we all want in the MacMini!!!

    Howdy everyone,
I am very excited about the new MacIntel Mini! Some great enhancements Apple made was the addition of two extra USB 2.0 ports! Yea! They also added Front Row and the Apple IR Remote too! However, when they did this, lets go all the way in terms of a media center. I posted some things I think they should add to the MacMini either in a small revision or the next big upgrade. Or it could be the third option, basically three options for the MacMini, with these additions. If you have anything to add to this list, post away!
Here is my wishlist for MacMini:
1.) Add some coaxial cables for:
    - TV
    - VCR
    - Cable/Dish TV input
2.) Add support for the additions, (above), in Front Row. Try to work out a deal with the Cable/Dish company so that the MacMini acts as a descrambler box. The channel can be displayed on the TV screen, as well as the time.
3.) Add one extra FireWire 400 port the the MacMini. The reasoning will be explained in addition 7, see below.
4.) In addition to the VGA adapter, Apple should also include an ADC port on the MacMini or the adapter so that it can work with Apple monitors. It is a little weird that an Apple computer would not add support for their own monitors.
5.) More Harddrive options, lets go for a harddrive that has 160 GB of storage with 16 MB Cache, and is 7200 RPM. I am not saying this should be standard, just an option for people who want extra power. The real size I would like is 500 GB HD.
6.) Once you have the connections and the harddrive, add DVR support to the MacMini. The only reason I included VCR to the list is so people can still watch and record VHS tapes as they please.
7.) Additions 6, 5, and 3 are related. If it is not technically possible at this time to fit a larger HD onto the MacMini, it would make number 6 less effective. Therefore, you can add an external FireWire HD for the DVR functions. The second FireWire port can be used for an iSight, or anything else the user needs/wants. I wouldn't recommend USB 2.0 HD's because I my experiences has taught me that FireWire has been much more consistant in data transfer rates.
8.) Add a FireWire 800 port to the MacMini. This would be used for networking, and special operations.
9.) Re-Add the 56K modem. This computer targets the PC market, and people who buy PC's don't normally have the money for a Mac. Therefore, quite a few people probable use 56K modems. In my case, I would use it for faxing purposes.
10.) There is no number ten!
Hence concludes the features I would like in the MacMini, lets move onto pricing.
    $400 MacMini Solo Core
    $500 MacMini Duo Core
$650 MacMini Duo Core + Extra Features
The picing would take advantage of the Low and high ends of the PC market, and with the $650 MacMini, that would compete with the way over priced and underperforming PC Media center computers, that go for thousands of dollars.

    • Coax is not dead, quite a few people still use Coax
and have Coax installed in their homes. The question
for me was not of the efficiency of the Coax, more of
the current services the Coax provides + the fact a
    lot of homes have it.
I agree there is a huge coax deployment. My dead was based mostly on looking ahead - I just don't see anyone building with it anymore - you may cerainly have a better handle on it than I and perhaps it will continue to be installed for decades (I'm sure the existing stuff will serve well for decades and only get upgraded when the devices have moved on.)
I do have to ask - how would you use coax on a mini?
    • So what happens to all the ADC monitors out there
and the people who own them? Since the MacMini is
suppose to be priced competitively, why would it
leave out all the ADC monitors, spending an extra 80
    bucks hurts the price competitiveness.
I would imagine that ADC support would costs a whole lot more than $80 to shrink it to fit inside a mini (not that there is any extra room - have you actually opened a mini up? It's a marvel of dense assembly)
Even if there were a compelling economic interest to support ADC (i.e. there were still ADC monitors being designed, produced and sold today) - I seriously doubt the engineering could fit in the size constraints the mini was designed for (fitting under the monoitor - sitting next to a DVD player, etc...)

I have set up a second iTunes user account on my PC, but when I create the new iTunes account it copies the music, videos etc from the original account and they seem to be linked, so that when I delete a song from one library it deletes from the other one.
On the online tutorials I've seen it shows that when you create a new iTunes library it should open as a blank account, but that isn't happening.
    What am I doing wrong?

If you  have iTunes 11 turn on the Sidebar. Go to iTunes>View and click on Show Sidebar. You can also do a Crtl+S to show the sidebar. The sidebar is where Devices appears. and Control+B to show the Menu bar

  • When I try to buy something, I get an Apple-ID which is not the one I want to use, and I don't know how to get rid of it either, so that I can use my ID, which is in Mail, Contacts etc. The ID I get, I can't find, so that I can delete it. What to do?

When I try to buy something, I get an Apple-ID which is not the one I want to use, and I don't know how to get rid of it either, so that I can replace it with my ID in Mail, contacts etc. The ID I get without wanting it, I can't find anywhere. I have to delete it. How do I solve this problem, anyone?

My content was obtained through another ID, which popped up earlier. Now this one doesn't pop up, and my current ID doesn't pop up either, but another one. How do you find an ID which is not in the store, and not in Mail, contacts etc. either?
Or is it possible to write the ID yourself when you want to buy something, not only to have it popped up being unable to be changed?

  • Hi, I have an old iphone 3 and for Xmas received an iphone 5. I have 2 apple ID accounts, one on each phone, for me to be able to transfer messages, fotos, contacts etc from the iphone 3 to 5 do I have to be using the same Apple ID account?  Many thanks.

hi everyone, first time using this forum!
I have an old iphone 3 and for Xmas received an iphone 5. I have 2 apple ID accounts, one on each phone. For me to be able to transfer messages, fotos, contacts etc from the iphone 3 to 5 do I have to be using the same Apple ID account?  Many thanks.

You should only use one Apple ID for both phones.  All apps that you bought for your 3 are linked forever to the Apple ID used to buy them.  If you set up your iPhone 5 as a new phone, rather than restoring from a backup of the 3, you will lose the messages, but you can sync to get the pix, contacts and music.  It is safer to do it as a new phone, because sometimes restoring a backup from an earlier version of the phone can cause problems in the new phone (as told to me by an Apple store "genius" two days ago.)

Yes. As you edit each one, you will get a dialog asking whether you want to change all or just the current one.

  • I have been able to wake my macmini by hitting the space bar - but since installing 10.7.4 using the 1.4Gb combo this wake method no longer works. Now the macmini shuts down, and I have to switch mains power off and on again before powering up the macmini

Since purchase of my macmini (2011 model) I have been able to wake it from sleep by hitting the (wired) keyboard space bar.
However, I recently updated the OS to 10.7.4 using the combo (1.4Gb) update, since when I cannot wake the macmini in that way.
Now, after putting the macmini to sleep, pressing the spacebar causes it to shut down.
I then have to switch mains power off and on again at the wall socket, after which the macmini starts up from shutdown condition.
I am by no means an expert, and have not been fiddling with settings, so I am in need of advice on what could need resetting to allow me to return to the previous simple 'wake up' approach!
    Thanks.

Reset the SMC > Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds.
    4. Attach the computer's power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
Followed by resetting the PRAM > Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
Then if those do not fix the problem, you may need to reset your Energy Saver and Keyboard Preferences by readjusting them.

The drop down view by menu (Song, album, etc) at the right side of the iTunes window is like a ghost. It flashes into view for a millisecond once in awhile but never lets me click on it. Anyone know what this is about and what to do?

    Short answer:
Click Hide Song(s), it is what you wanted to do...
    Long answer:
iTunes in the Cloud is a feature of your iTunes store account that allows you to redownload or stream your past purchases. When you delete a purchased track that is downloaded to your computer (like the first one shown here) you are asked if you also want to hide the song from iCloud. This would remove it from the computer and also stop it showing up with the iCloud symbol as the other tracks from that album (which are not downloaded) do.
If a track shows with the cloud symbol you can play (stream) it by double-clicking the title, or click the cloud symbol to download a local copy to your library. If you try to delete one of these tracks you get a slightly different message confirming that you want to hide the track. Clicking hide will remove the listing from the library and any other device that shows your past purchases.
Should you want to retrieve any item hidden in this way at a later date use Store > View My Account > iTunes in the Cloud > Hidden Purchases > Manage.
To hide all your previous purchases that are not downloaded to your computer use Edit > Preferences > Store and untick Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases.

  • I have a new iMac running iTunes 10.4 in OS 10.6.8, and a new Mac Air running iTunes 10.4 in Lion.  I was able to transfer all my music etc. from the iMac onto the Air, but cannot figure out how to get the Playlists from the iMac to the Air.  iTunes Help

I have a new iMac running iTunes 10.4 in OS 10.6.8, and a new Mac Air running iTunes 10.4 in Lion.  I was able to transfer all my music etc. from the iMac onto the Air, but cannot figure out how to get the Playlists from the iMac to the Air.  iTunes Help says File >Library >Export playlist and choose XML, or to save a copy of all your playlists, File > Library > Export Library, "the Exported info is saved in XML format."  Then it says, "to import an iTunes playlist, File > Library > Import Playlist".  Now I am assuming I do that import part on the Air, but when I try it doesn't recognize anything that can be imported - what am I missing??? Aside from a clue...

Thanks, Jim, for taking the time, but the reply is unfortunately vague in the exact area of my confusion!  "you need to copy that file to your new computer..."  Well, the Import/Export instructions make it seem as if the two computers should be able to communicate this file thru wifi, but that's the linkage I can't seem tocreate with Import/Export.  Should I instead email a copy to myself (thats what applecare suggested)?  Copy it to and from a thumb drive?  But then place the file where?  And the article was helpful, but should I be trying to move the Library file or the Library.xml file (as iTunes Help suggests)?  Sorry to be so clueless about it...I suppose I buy Apple in the hopes of not having to think about this stuff, which approach seems not to be serving me well. Thanks again for your time!

  • How to copy a playlist from iTunes to a USB (keeping artist song name etc) and the files to listen and browse in a jeep hard drive

I made a music playlist on my iTunes, perfectly ordered. I get a car with a USB input to get the songs in the car hard drive, My question is: How can I copy the playlist (with artist, song etc) with the music file (but with the name and artist instead  of the file name) in the usb so I can copy it and browse it in my car?
    Thanks

This would require renaming the files on the computer.
iTunes is not going to do this magically when copying files to the flash drive, iTunes does not even copy/sync files to a flash drive.
